Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 2, 23-28)

Un jour de sabbat, Jésus marchait à travers les champs de blé ; et ses disciples, chemin faisant, se mirent à arracher des épis.
Les pharisiens lui disaient : « Regarde ce qu'ils font le jour du sabbat ! Cela n'est pas permis. »
Jésus leur répond : « N'avez-vous jamais lu ce que fit David, lorsqu'il fut dans le besoin et qu'il eut faim, lui et ses compagnons ? Au temps du grand prêtre Abiathar, il entra dans la maison de Dieu et mangea les pains de l'offrande que seuls les prêtres peuvent manger, et il en donna aussi à ses compagnons. »
Il leur disait encore : « Le sabbat a été fait pour l'homme, et non pas l'homme pour le sabbat. Voilà pourquoi le Fils de l'homme est maître, même du sabbat. »

Le message

Les gestes humaines rendent visibles tout ce qui est invisible. Dieu ne regarde pas à l’apparence, mais le cœur, nous dit la première lecture. Jésus qui est confronté par les pharisiens nous amène vers la sainte écriture et Il nous apprend sur l’essentielle de l’adoration. Il nous affirme que « le Fils de l’homme est maître, même du sabbat. »

Nous devons d’être disciples de ce maître qui nous inspire et qui nous propose un nouveau chemin, un chemin d’amour. De temps en temps nous ne comprendrons pas l’intelligence derrière de sa proposition. Mais si nous arrivons à faire confiance au Seigneur, et d’être fidèle à son enseignement, nous verrons surement le fruit.

Gospel text (Mc 2,23-28):

One sabbath Jesus was walking through grainfields. As his disciples walked along with him, they began to pick the heads of grain and crush them in their hands. Then the Pharisees said to Jesus, «Look! they are doing what is forbidden on the sabbath!». And He said to them, «Have you never read what David did in his time of need, when he and his men were very hungry? He went into the house of God when Abiathar was High Priest and ate the bread of offering, which only the priests are allowed to eat, and he also gave some to the men who were with him». Then Jesus said to them, «The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. So the Son of Man is master even of the sabbath».

The message

We are very often confronted by the tradition, the law and human consideration. Every confrontation should be addressed with a Biblical value and we have to verify that with the teaching of Jesus. He is the master even of the Sabbath. Since we are his disciples, we are called to follow our Master and imitate Him in our words and deeds. Let us imitate the way Jesus looks at events and confrontations and how He responds.

May at times with limited human intelligence, we find difficult to understand the plan of God in our lives. In such situation, Jesus is calling us to listen to Him, be faithful to His proposition and follow Him. Since He loves us, He doesn’t look at what we do, rather the reason behind our action and deeper sense of our love for God and for our neighbors. Why to waste our precious time on little things?
