Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 17, 26-35.37)

Jésus disait à ses disciples :
« Ce qui se passera dans les jours du Fils de l'homme ressemblera à ce qui est arrivé dans les jours de Noé.
On mangeait, on buvait, on se mariait, jusqu'au jour où Noé entra dans l'arche. Puis le déluge arriva, qui les a tous fait mourir.
Ce sera aussi comme dans les jours de Loth : on mangeait, on buvait, on achetait, on vendait, on plantait, on bâtissait ; mais le jour où Loth sortit de Sodome, Dieu fit tomber du ciel une pluie de feu et de soufre qui les a tous fait mourir ; il en sera de même le jour où le Fils de l'homme se révélera.
Ce jour-là, celui qui sera sur sa terrasse, et qui aura ses affaires dans sa maison, qu'il ne descende pas pour les emporter ; et de même celui qui sera dans son champ, qu'il ne retourne pas en arrière.
Rappelez-vous la femme de Loth.
Qui cherchera à conserver sa vie la perdra. Et qui la perdra la sauvegardera.
Je vous le dis : Cette nuit-là, deux personnes seront dans le même lit : l'une sera prise, l'autre laissée.
Deux femmes seront ensemble en train de moudre du grain : l'une sera prise, l'autre laissée. »
Les disciples lui demandèrent : « Où donc, Seigneur ? » Il leur répondit : « Là où il y a un corps, là aussi se rassembleront les vautours. »

Le message

Puisque la vie est un don de Dieu, nous avons un devoir de la protéger. Pourtant le Seigneur nous donne un nouvel enseignement « Qui cherchera à conserver sa vie la perdra. Et qui la perdra la sauvegardera. » Comment pouvons-nous comprendre cet enseignement ?

Le Seigneur nous demande de nous enraciner dans le Seigneur et de vivre notre vie par le Seigneur et dans le Seigneur. Ce ne sera plus nous, c’est le Seigneur vivra en nous. Certainement, notre priorité et notre orientation verra une transformation radicale, et ce jour-là, nous pouvons nous comporter comme Noé.

Gospel text (Lc 17,26-37):

Jesus said to his disciples, «As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be on the day the Son of Man comes. Then people ate and drank; they took husbands and wives. But on the day Noah entered the ark, the flood came and destroyed them all. Just as it was in the days of Lot: people ate and drank, they bought and sold, planted and built. But on the day Lot left Sodom, God made fire and sulfur rain down from heaven which destroyed them all. So will it be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

»On that day, if you are on the rooftop, don't go down into the house to get your belongings, and if you happen to be in the fields, do not turn back. Remember Lot's wife. Whoever tries to save his life will lose himself, but whoever gives his life will be born again. I tell you, though two men are sharing the same bed, it may be that one will be taken and the other left. Though two women are grinding corn together, one may be taken and the other left». Then they asked Jesus, «Where will this take place, Lord?». And he answered, «Where the body is, there too will the vultures gather».

The message

The message of the day is very simple. If we live in Christ and by Christ, the final day will come as promised by the Lord and we will be fully prepared like Noah. If we are not rooted in Christ, the final day may stuck us when a moment unimaginable.

How to understand the second message? Since the life is a gift, we have an obligation to protecting it. When Jesus says “Whoever tries to save his life will lose himself, but whoever gives his life will be born again.’ we find little difficult to digest this. For me, there is no contradiction. Once our life is rooted in Christ, we will say like Saint Paul, it is no more I, but Christ who lives in me. Thus our life will be a transformed life, fully immerged in Christ. It is in abandoning our life in Christ that we gain a new life in Christ.
