Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 20,24-29.

L'un des Douze, Thomas (dont le nom signifie : Jumeau), n'était pas avec eux quand Jésus était venu.
Les autres disciples lui disaient : « Nous avons vu le Seigneur ! » Mais il leur déclara : « Si je ne vois pas dans ses mains la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas mon doigt dans la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas la main dans son côté, non, je ne croirai pas ! »
Huit jours plus tard, les disciples se trouvaient de nouveau dans la maison, et Thomas était avec eux. Jésus vient, alors que les portes étaient verrouillées, et il était là au milieu d’eux. Il dit : « La paix soit avec vous ! »
Puis il dit à Thomas : « Avance ton doigt ici, et vois mes mains ; avance ta main, et mets-la dans mon côté : cesse d’être incrédule, sois croyant. »
Alors Thomas lui dit : « Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu ! »
Jésus lui dit : « Parce que tu m’as vu, tu crois. Heureux ceux qui croient sans avoir vu. »

Le message

Saint Thomas a compris le sens de patience et la miséricorde. Il a découvert en Jésus ce Dieu qui nous laisse libres. Jésus souhaite que nous soyons libres, comme Lui. La même personne qui a dit, « Si je ne vois pas dans ses mains la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas mon doigt dans la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas la main dans son côté, non, je ne croirai pas ! », soit aujourd’hui celui qui déclare Jésus comme Dieu, « Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu ! »

Il est allé jusqu’à l’Inde pour convertir ce peuple qui se proclame aujourd’hui comme les chrétiens de saint Thomas. Une tradition forte et profonde enracinée en Christ, ce peuple est encore persécuter pour leur foi. En ce jour, prions pour tous les missionnaires qui ont quitté leurs pays et leurs cultures pour annoncer la Bonne Nouvelle. Prions aussi pour les chrétiens persécutés. Confions tous au Seigneur.

24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe." 26 Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." 28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 29 Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

The message

"Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe." Many of us mock one another when one refuse to believe us. We forget at the same time the declaration of Saint Thomas, the first one among the Apostles who called Jesus as God, "My Lord and my God!"

The answer of Jesus is quite astonishing, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." If Jesus has said this to Thomas, it is because Jesus was waiting for Thomas since quite a long time to come back to Jesus. The patience and mercy that the Lord had for Thomas do assure us the same.

We who haven’t seen Jesus or head him in person, believe only from what is taught to us, is called to have the same deep faith of the Apostles. Blessed are the one who has the same faith. Blessed; because, it is not our human effort that has helped us to reach to this level of faith, but merely from the divine intervention that we come closer to God through the same faith.

On this great day, let us pray for all the missionaries who have left their country and culture to a foreign land to announce the Good News. It is important to pray for all the Christians who are persecuted daily for their faith. I wish you all a very happy Feast Day.
