Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 11,37-41.

En ce temps-là, pendant que Jésus parlait, un pharisien l’invita pour le repas de midi. Jésus entra chez lui et prit place.
Le pharisien fut étonné en voyant qu’il n’avait pas fait d’abord les ablutions précédant le repas.
Le Seigneur lui dit : « Bien sûr, vous les pharisiens, vous purifiez l’extérieur de la coupe et du plat, mais à l’intérieur de vous-mêmes vous êtes remplis de cupidité et de méchanceté.
Insensés ! Celui qui a fait l’extérieur n’a-t-il pas fait aussi l’intérieur ?
Donnez plutôt en aumône ce que vous avez, et alors tout sera pur pour vous. »

« Vous purifiez l'extérieur... Celui qui a fait l'extérieur n'a-t-il pas fait aussi l'intérieur ?

Le Seigneur connaît les pensées et les intentions de notre cœur. Nul doute que lui, en effet, les connaisse toutes, mais nous, nous connaissons seulement celles qu'il nous rend manifestes par la grâce du discernement. Car l'esprit de l'homme ne sait pas toujours ce qui est en lui, et même lorsqu'il s'agit de ses pensées, qu'elles soient voulues ou non, il s'en fait une idée qui ne correspond pas toujours à la réalité. Même celles qui se présentent avec évidence au regard de son esprit, il ne les discerne pas avec précision, tant son regard est obscurci.

Il arrive souvent, en effet, pour une raison humaine ou qui relève du Tentateur, qu'on soit lancé par sa propre pensée dans ce qui n'est que l'apparence de la piété, et qui, aux yeux de Dieu, ne mérite nullement la récompense promise à la vertu. C'est qu'en effet certaines choses peuvent prendre l'aspect de vertus véritables, comme d'ailleurs de vices, et tromper les yeux du cœur. Par leurs séductions, elles peuvent troubler la vue de notre intelligence au point de lui faire prendre souvent pour du bien des réalités mauvaises en fait, et inversement de lui faire discerner du mal là où, en fait, il n'y en a pas. C'est là un aspect de notre misère et de notre ignorance, qu'il nous faut beaucoup déplorer et grandement redouter...

Qui peut vérifier si les esprits viennent de Dieu, à moins d'avoir reçu de Dieu le discernement des esprits ? ... Ce discernement est à la source de toutes les vertus.

37 While he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in and sat at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of extortion and wickedness. 40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you.

“You cleanse the outside… Did not he who made the outside make the inside too?”

The Lord knows the thoughts and intentions of our heart. For there is no doubt that he knows them all but we know only those he reveals to us through the grace of discernment. For a person’s mind does not always know what is inside him and even when he is dealing with his own thoughts, whether they be voluntary or not, he thinks of them in a way that does not always correspond with reality. His gaze is so darkened that he doesn’t even discern with precision those that reveal themselves clearly to his mind.

For it often happens that, for some human reason or for a reason coming from the Tempter, by means of his own thinking a person sets out on something that only appears to be pious but, in the eyes of God, does not deserve at all the reward promised to virtue. That is because certain things can take on the appearance of true virtue, as moreover also of vice, and can deceive the eyes of the heart. Through their seductions, they can trouble the vision of our intelligence to the point that it often considers realities to be good that are in fact bad and, conversely, they can cause our minds to see something bad where in fact there is no evil. That is an aspect of our poverty and ignorance that we must deplore a lot and greatly fear…

Who can verify whether the spirits come from God unless the one who has received discernment of spirits from God?… That discernment is at the source of all the virtues.
