Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 10, 38-42)

Alors qu'il était en route avec ses disciples, Jésus entra dans un village. Une femme appelée Marthe le reçut dans sa maison.
Elle avait une sœur nommée Marie qui, se tenant assise aux pieds du Seigneur, écoutait sa parole.
Marthe était accaparée par les multiples occupations du service. Elle intervint et dit : « Seigneur, cela ne te fait rien ? Ma sœur me laisse seule à faire le service. Dis-lui donc de m'aider. »
Le Seigneur lui répondit : « Marthe, Marthe, tu t'inquiètes et tu t'agites pour bien des choses. Une seule est nécessaire. Marie a choisi la meilleure part : elle ne lui sera pas enlevée. »

Homélie

Nous sommes dans le seizième dimanche ordinaire. La première lecture et l’évangile du jour nous parlent de l’accueilli, de l’hospitalité et de l’écoute. Aujourd’hui Jésus donne un RDV chez Martha et Marie. Dans leurs discernements, elles sont choisies chacune une partie du travail et le Seigneur nous affirme que la meilleur part c’est d’écouter la Parole de Dieu. Ecouter, c’est se donner, c’est une manière d’exprimer notre amour, c’et un moyen par lequel nous pouvons apporter la paix aux cœurs des hommes. C’est ici qu’on nourri la personne.

L’intervention de Marthe « Dis-lui donc de m’aider » est la tentation des associations caritatives qui s’engagent aux services du peuple ; la contemplation ou l’action ? À plusieurs reprises dans l’Evangile, Jésus met en garde ses disciples contre les soucis du monde qui peuvent les détourner de l’essentiel ; demeurer dans la maison du Seigneur et écouter sa Parole.

Au terme de notre vie, n’oublions pas tout ce qu’il nous a dit: « tout ce que vous avez fait au plus petit d’entre les miens, c’est à moi que vous l’avez fait. C’est un appel pour chacun de nous à donner généreusement au service de Dieu et de nos frères. A mon avais, une contemplation sans action ou sans engagement personnel ne sera non plus acceptable au Seigneur. » L’unique nécessaire » qui fait défaut à Marthe à ce moment-là est celui de l’amour.

« La priorité revient à l’écoute de la parole de Dieu, à la halte, au geste de s’asseoir ; elle consiste à ne pas vouloir précéder le Seigneur, à accepter d’être servie avant de servir. Tel est l’unique nécessaire, qui répond au besoin de chacune et de chacun ; telle est la bonne part, qui correspond au désir de tous.

Mes amis écoutons nous les uns les autres et Dieu nous parle à travers nos amis. Cette écoute est primordiale dans toute relation interpersonnelle. Ecoutons nos parents et nos enfants avant qu’on les serve. Commençons cette semaine avec une écoute profonde de la Parole de Dieu. Il n’y a pas à choisir entre Marthe et Marie, mais à se mettre à l’écoute du Seigneur pour se laisser pénétrer de son enseignement et pouvoir vivre l’unique nécessaire : aimer. Tout le reste en découle.

Gospel text (Lc 10,38-42):

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, He entered a village and a woman called Martha welcomed him to her house. She had a sister named Mary who sat down at the Lord's feet to listen to his words. Martha, meanwhile, was busy with all the serving and finally she said, «Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving?». But the Lord answered, «Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her».

Homily

Today we have two readings which speak of the same thing. The first reading speaks about Abraham who receives three persons, but he addresses them as a single person (some call this as a representation of Trinity in the Old Testament) and we have in the gospel Martha and Mary receive Jesus in their house.

Both of them receive someone important and there we find the best way to receive them is to sit near to them. Abraham remains near to them and Mary sits very close to the Lord to listen to Him. Sitting close to someone is to express our proximity to this person and our interest to listen to them and be with them. What a joy when we are able to sit very close to someone we love and listen to them?

Abraham runs and he will keeping running throughout his life. He is not the only one who is running, but he makes every household member running so that the invited guests get the food in right time. There is hurry, not for him, but for the other. When the precipitation is oriented towards self oriented goals even though it may be for the other at the end (like Martha in the gospel for Jesus), is dangerous, because all work for this individual who demands and controls, while in reality they all are called to work for the Lord (we see this orientation from the behavior of Abraham).

Life will take a radical change only if we listen to the Lord. Abraham listens to the Lord and the orientation was always good. Martha was absent in this listening and we see the silence in Mary and a disturbance in Martha (she complains).

In today’s gospel we find that Martha is disturbed, disturbed of many things, while Abraham was not disturbed because he knew exactly what he should do. Getting involved in one single activity is better than getting involved with many activities and being disturbed. It is the question of priorities. Once we are able to prioritize the work, we will do the most important first and the rest afterwards. Mary did exactly the same, while Martha failed drastically to prioritize the events. Jesus reminds Martha once again, «Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed”. The Lord is reminding us the same. Let be conscious of this reality in our own lives.
