Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 10, 17-27)

Jésus se mettait en route quand un homme accourut vers lui, se mit à genoux et lui demanda : « Bon maître, que dois-je faire pour avoir en héritage la vie éternelle ? »
Jésus lui dit : « Pourquoi m'appelles-tu bon ? Personne n'est bon, sinon Dieu seul.
Tu connais les commandements : Ne commets pas de meurtre, ne commets pas d'adultère, ne commets pas de vol, ne porte pas de faux témoignage, ne fais de tort à personne, honore ton père et ta mère. »
L'homme répondit : « Maître, j'ai observé tous ces commandements depuis ma jeunesse. »
Posant alors son regard sur lui, Jésus se mit à l'aimer. Il lui dit : « Une seule chose te manque : va, vends tout ce que tu as, donne-le aux pauvres et tu auras un trésor au ciel ; puis viens et suis-moi. »
Mais lui, à ces mots, devint sombre et s'en alla tout triste, car il avait de grands biens.

Alors Jésus regarde tout autour de lui et dit à ses disciples : « Comme il sera difficile à ceux qui possèdent des richesses d'entrer dans le royaume de Dieu ! »
Les disciples étaient stupéfaits de ces paroles. Mais Jésus reprend : « Mes enfants, comme il est difficile d'entrer dans le royaume de Dieu. Il est plus facile à un chameau de passer par le trou d'une aiguille qu'à un riche d'entrer dans le royaume de Dieu. »
De plus en plus déconcertés, les disciples se demandaient entre eux : « Mais alors, qui peut être sauvé ? »
Jésus les regarde et répond : « Pour les hommes, cela est impossible, mais pas pour Dieu ; car tout est possible à Dieu. »

Le message

Un homme de loi, des règles et fidèle à la tradition religieuse cherche la vie éternelle et il se présent au Seigneur. Il est convaincu que les lois et les traditions ne sont pas assez pour l’avoir. Comme cet homme là, nous devons nous présenter au Seigneur.

Le Seigneur ne regarde pas la fidélité à la loi, mais une fidélité à la volonté de Dieu. Marc nous dit que le Seigneur s’est mis à aimer cet homme qui cherche la vie éternelle. Il aime tous ceux et celles qui cherchent la volonté du Père. C’est dans cet amour qu’Il lui propose une nouvelle règle qui peut l’amener vers la vie éternelle. Il est parti triste, car la proposition va déchirer sa vie présente et son rêve pour l’avenir.

Très souvent les propositions du Seigneur nous déchirent, mais pour le bien. C’est dans ce déchirement que Dieu veut nous purifier et nous transformer. Serait-il possible pour le grain donner les fruits sans se déchirer ? Ce n’est pas assez d’avoir une bonne volonté. Ce qui est demandé à nous, c’est l’engagement personnel.

Gospel text (Mc 10,17-27):

Just as Jesus was setting out on his journey again, a man ran up, knelt before him and asked, «Good Master, what must I do to have eternal life?». Jesus answered, «Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: Do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not cheat, honor your father and mother». The man replied, «I have obeyed all these commandments since my childhood». Then Jesus looked steadily at him and loved him and he said, «For you, one thing is lacking. Go, sell what you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come and follow me». On hearing these words, his face fell and he went away sorrowful for he was a man of great wealth.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, «How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!». The disciples were shocked at these words, but Jesus insisted, «Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God». They were more astonished than ever and wondered, «Who, then, can be saved?». Jesus looked steadily at them and said, «For humans it is impossible, but not for God; all things are possible with God».

The message

It is not enough to have a very good intention, but a sincere engagement and perseverance to go just to the end. This rich man didn’t realize that the eternal life is going to take him fully and transform him in to a totally different person. This transformation is possible only if we empty ourselves and allow God to fill us with His grace.

The love of God disturbs the heart of every individual who desires to have a personal encounter with Him. If we wish not be disturbed, it is better not to go and seek the personal encounter with the Father. If we allow all theses disturbances in our lives, which come from God, we will realize in later days that these bitter pills of life have transformed us and made us possible to carry God to our brothers and sisters.

The eternal life is a total immersion in the divinity of God, and a moment where we see God face to face, without any fear. It is allowing God to take us fully as His own, without losing our personal identity. Is it possible to hold the darkness in front of a powerful light? Can we reasonably fill something without empting it? Jesus is asking us to empty ourselves so that He may fill us. Is there anyone to listen to Him?
