Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 17, 10-13)

Descendant de la montagne,
les disciples interrogèrent Jésus :
« Pourquoi donc les scribes disent-ils
que le prophète Élie doit venir d’abord ? »
Jésus leur répondit :
« Élie va venir
pour remettre toute chose à sa place.
Mais, je vous le déclare :
Élie est déjà venu ;
au lieu de le reconnaître,
ils lui ont fait tout ce qu’ils ont voulu.
Et de même, le Fils de l’homme va souffrir par eux. »
Alors les disciples comprirent
qu’il leur parlait de Jean le Baptiste.

Le message

Nous nous attendons le Seigneur et nous nous préparons à l’accueillir. Jésus nous demande de porter attention à la qualité de cette attende, car le peuple Israël, qui attentait le Seigneur, également le prophète Elie, n’arrivait pas à reconnaitre ni la présence d’Eli en Jean Baptiste, ni le Messie en Jésus. Voilà le vrai paradoxe de notre démarche chrétienne, avec une bonne volonté, un engagement positive, pourtant très loin de l’essentielle, car nous ne voyons pas le présence du Seigneur parmi nous, dans nos frères et sœurs qui nous entourent et particulièrement dans les personnes qui souffrent.

Gospel text (Mt 17,10-13):

As they were coming down the mountainside, the disciples then asked Jesus, «Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah must come first?». And Jesus answered, «So it is: first comes Elijah to set everything as it has to be. But I tell you, Elijah has already come and they did not recognize him, but treated him as they pleased. And they will also make the Son of Man suffer». Then the disciples understood that Jesus was referring to John the Baptist.

The message

Jesus is not very much interested in answering the question directly, but takes us little further towards the finality of this question: the need to identify the prophet and urgency to respond to God positively. We are waiting to welcome Jesus and we need the capacity to identify Him. It is in this incapacity to identity Jesus that the people of God failed to accept Him.

In our good, faithful and holy waiting, if we are not able to identify the presence of Jesus in our brothers and sisters, all of our waiting and preparation will end in a disappointed note, because in our ignorance, we will refuse the entry of Jesus in our hearts.

Let us pray to the mother of Jesus to help us to identity Him and respond Him positively.
