Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 19,13-15.

Ensuite, on présenta des enfants à Jésus pour qu’il leur impose les mains en priant. Mais les disciples les écartèrent vivement.
Jésus leur dit : « Laissez les enfants, ne les empêchez pas de venir à moi, car le royaume des Cieux est à ceux qui leur ressemblent. »
Il leur imposa les mains, puis il partit de là.

La contemplation

Aujourd’hui nous allons contempler sur la justice de Dieu et la nécessité de se convertir, et aussi sur le Royaume de Dieu. Dans la première lecture Dieu s’adresse au peuple, « Je ne prends plaisir à la mort de personne, ……..convertissez-vous, et vous vivrez. » Il n’est pas un Dieu de jugement, mais un Dieu de justice, qui voit toute vérité et Il la présente devant nous, en posant cette question, mérite-tu ma miséricorde ? Pour la mériter, il faut savoir vivre notre vie dignement selon le commandement d’amour. La véritable conversion est une retrouve du fils prodigue dans la maison du Père. Se convertir est, se rendre dans la maison où notre Père nous attend avec beaucoup d’amour et de compassion. Se convertir est se laisser guider par l’Esprit Saint et mettre en rigueur tout ce que Dieu nous demande. Se convertir est devenir un véritable homme, un homme idéal, un homme par excellence en Dieu.

Cet homme est comme un enfant qui met toute sa confiance dans la providence de Dieu, qui écoute patiemment tout ce que le Père lui dira, mettra en pratique dans la joie et dans la paix, sans se révolter contre Dieu. Comme un enfant qui se laisse guider par le père, dans le Royaume de Dieu tous se mettrons devant Dieu, offrions tout ce qu’ils possèdent comme les talents, les dons reçus, la liberté, etc., pour que Dieu en disperse selon sa volonté. Sommes-nous comme cet enfant de Dieu ?

« Semblables à cet enfant »

Le Seigneur dit aux apôtres déjà âgés et mûrs : « Si vous ne changez pas pour devenir comme cet enfant, vous n'entrerez pas dans le Royaume des cieux » (Mt 18,3 ; cf. v. 4)... Il les incite à retrouver l'enfance...afin qu'ils renaissent à l'innocence du cœur : « Personne, à moins de naître de l'eau et de l'esprit, ne peut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu » (Jn 3,5).

« Si vous ne changez pas pour devenir comme cet enfant » : il ne dit pas « ces enfants », mais « cet enfant » ; il n'en choisit qu'un, il n'en propose qu'un. Et qui est cet enfant qu'il donne en exemple à ses disciples ? Je ne crois pas que ce soit un enfant du peuple, de la foule des hommes, qui offre aux apôtres un modèle de sainteté pour le monde entier. Non, je ne crois pas que cet enfant vienne du peuple, mais du ciel. Il s'agit de cet enfant venu du ciel dont parle le prophète Isaïe : « Un enfant nous est né, un fils nous est donné » (9,5). C'est lui l'enfant innocent, qui ne sait pas répondre à l'insulte par l'insulte, aux coups par les coups — bien mieux, même pendant son agonie il prie pour ses ennemis : « Mon Père, pardonne-leur, ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font » (Lc 23,34). Ainsi, en sa grâce insondable, le Seigneur déborde de cette innocence du cœur que la nature donne aux enfants. Il est cet enfant qui demande aux tout-petits de l'imiter et de le suivre.

13 Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; 14 but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away.

The contemplation

What is the relation between today’s first reading and the gospel? How do we interpret the psalm of the day? For me, it is important that we mediate on the image of ‘man’, the ideal man that God looks for. Certainly, it is the man who knows God and His love for him. It is the man who seeks the wisdom of God and puts his energy and soul to accomplish the will of the Father. It is the man who doesn’t allow himself to be animated by simply feelings, emotions, taste and appearance, but allows himself to be animated by the Truth, the Truth of God. Certainly, he is the one who listens the Word of God and put everything heard from the Lord in practice.

Thus the sincere prayer of the psalmist become his own prayer. He prays to God that he may be helped by the Lord to keep his thoughts and act pure in front of God. He prays with confidence that this God of love will listen to him. This is the exact attitude of a child towards the father. God wishes that we develop such attitude with Him and taste by ourselves how much He is humble and soft towards us. Just like the child who allows the father to animate and decide for him, it is important as children of God that we too allow ourselves be animated by the Holy Spirit. It is in this Spirit filled animation that we can find the perfect happiness. The Kingdom of God is one such place and children live in this joy. Shall we reborn once again as this child to live in this perfect happiness? If we desire to be, then the conversion is the first and the right step to be taken. Are we ready?

“Like this little child”

The Lord said to the apostles, who were already adult and mature: “Unless you turn and become like this little child, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven” (Mt 18:3&4)… He urges them to rediscover their childhood… in order that they might be born again to innocence of heart: “No one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and spirit” (Jn 3:5).

“Unless you turn and become like this little child”: he does not say “these children” but “this child”, he only chooses one, only suggests one. And who is this child whom he puts forward as an example to his disciples? I don’t think it was a child of one of the people, one of the crowd, who offers an example of holiness to the apostles on behalf of the whole world. No, I don’t think this child comes from the people but from heaven. This is a question of that child from heaven of whom the prophet Isaiah speaks: “A child is born to us, a son is given us” (9:5). This is the innocent child, incapable of meeting insult with insult or blows with blows and who – better still – prays for his enemies even during his agony: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do” (Lk 23:34)., The Lord overflows in this way, in his unfathomable grace, out of the innocence of heart that nature gives to children. He is that child who asks little ones to imitate and follow him.
