Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 9, 14-15)

Les disciples de Jean Baptiste s'approchent de Jésus en disant : « Pourquoi tes disciples ne jeûnent-ils pas, alors que nous et les pharisiens nous jeûnons ? »
Jésus leur répondit : « Les invités de la noce pourraient-ils donc faire pénitence pendant le temps où l'Époux est avec eux ? Mais un temps viendra où l'Époux leur sera enlevé, et alors ils jeûneront. »

Le message

Le temps de carême est un moment où les fidèles jeûnent très souvent. La pénitence est une règle ou une norme du jour pour tous ceux et celles qui pratiquent et vivent leur foi fidèlement.

Le texte de la première lecture nous éclaire et interprète le sens de l’évangile du jour. « Quel est donc le jeûne qui me plaît ? N'est-ce pas faire tomber les chaînes injustes, délier les attaches du joug, rendre la liberté aux opprimés, briser tous les jougs ?
N'est-ce pas partager ton pain avec celui qui a faim, recueillir chez toi le malheureux sans abri, couvrir celui que tu verras sans vêtement, ne pas te dérober à ton semblable ? » Portons attention à cette demande de Dieu.

Gospel text (Mt 9,14-15):

The disciples of John came to Jesus with the question, «How is it that we and the Pharisees fast on many occasions, but not your disciples?». Jesus answered them, «How can you expect the wedding guests to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast».

The message

Fasting and prayer take an important place during these seasons of Lent. Today Jesus is qualifying the essence and the base of our fasting. Our fasting is partially recognizing our inability to understand and feel the presence of God and our thirst to as closer as possible to be with the Lord. Our fasting should help us to understand the deep presence of God in our lives and cherish it very dearly.

Let us not forget the fasting that God expects from us. It is nice to quote the first reading here. “Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD?

"Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?”
