Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 5, 20-26)

Comme les disciples s’étaient rassemblés autour de Jésus, sur la montagne, il leur disait : « Je vous le déclare : Si votre justice ne surpasse pas celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n'entrerez pas dans le Royaume des cieux.

Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, et si quelqu'un commet un meurtre, il en répondra au tribunal. Eh bien moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui se met en colère contre son frère en répondra au tribunal. Si quelqu'un insulte son frère, il en répondra au grand conseil. Si quelqu'un maudit son frère, il sera passible de la géhenne de feu.
Donc, lorsque tu vas présenter ton offrande sur l'autel, si, là, tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, laisse ton offrande là, devant l'autel, va d'abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, et ensuite viens présenter ton offrande.
Accorde-toi vite avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, pour éviter que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, le juge au garde, et qu'on ne te jette en prison.
Amen, je te le dis : tu n'en sortiras pas avant d'avoir payé jusqu'au dernier sou. »

Le message

Une telle exigence semble-t-il en peu trop. Pourtant, est-il possible de vivre une vie d’imperfection en tant qu’enfant de Dieu ? Les enfants de Dieu sont invités à vivre une vie par excellence, car c’est en nous que Dieu va sauver le monde.

C’est pourquoi Jésus nous demande de perfectionner notre comportement, en particulier avec nos frères et sœurs. Tout se commence avec la réconciliation.

Gospel text (Mt 5,20-26):

Jesus said to the crowds, «I tell you, then, that if you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

»You have heard that it was said to our people in the past: Do not commit murder; anyone who does kill will have to face trial. But now I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will have to face trial. Whoever insults a brother or sister deserves to be brought before the council; whoever calls a brother or a sister “Fool” deserves to be thrown into the fire of hell.

»So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar and you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with him, and then come back and offer your gift to God. Don't forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put you in jail. There you will stay, until you have paid the last penny».

The message

In the time of Jesus, if you keep all the laws, then you are called righteous. Jesus goes a step further by demanding us to live a life with resembles the life of God; perfection par excellence.

Even though this demand may seems to us till too much, since we are children of God, this exigency is quite acceptable. All that Jesus is asking us is to love our brothers and sisters and get reconciled with them. If we find this to be difficult, we don’t merit to be called Christians.
