Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 19, 25-27)

Près de la croix de Jésus se tenait sa mère, avec la sœur de sa mère, Marie femme de Cléophas, et Marie Madeleine. Jésus, voyant sa mère, et près d'elle le disciple qu'il aimait, dit à sa mère : « Femme, voici ton fils. » Puis il dit au disciple : « Voici ta mère. » Et à partir de cette heure-là, le disciple la prit chez lui.

Le message

Ce jour de la fête, nous confions à la vierge Marie notre peine et souffrance pour que nous ayons le même courage et la même foi. Prions humblement pour toutes les mères du monde et rendons grâce au Seigneur pour cet amour d’une mère par lequel Dieu s’exprime son amour pour ce monde.

Lorsque nous voyons une personne qui a besoin de notre présence ou notre aide, rappelons-nous cette demande du Seigneur « Voici ta mère……….voici ton fils ». Marie n’était seulement la mère du Seigneur, elle était également son disciple. Puisque elle était son disciple, devant la Croix du Seigneur, en elle, elle participe à la souffrance de son Fils.

Gospel text (Lc 2,33-35):

The father of Jesus and his mother wondered at what was said about the child. Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, «See him; He will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel. He shall stand as a sign of contradiction, while a sword will pierce your own soul. Then the secret thoughts of many may be brought to light».

The message

We don’t have many joyful moments of Mary in the gospel. However from the events narrated in the gospels we can easily say that the mother of Jesus was a happy mother. She is such generous lady who accompanied her cousin Elizabeth and today she accompanies her son even to the foot of the Cross. It is here she becomes a model for us to take up our own crosses and follow Jesus. On this day let us remember all the mothers of the world and particularly the mothers who suffer.

Her capacity to meditate on all that she didn’t understand and her patience do inspire us to imitate her in our lives too. She is capable of transforming our sorrows into Joy. Let us surrender all our sorrows and pains to the Lord, through this mother of sorrow.
