La fête de la Croix Glorieuse

Jean 3,13-17.

Nul n'est monté au ciel sinon celui qui est descendu du ciel, le Fils de l'homme.
De même que le serpent de bronze fut élevé par Moïse dans le désert, ainsi faut-il que le Fils de l'homme soit élevé,
afin que tout homme qui croit obtienne par lui la vie éternelle.
Car Dieu a tant aimé le monde qu'il a donné son Fils unique : ainsi tout homme qui croit en lui ne périra pas, mais il obtiendra la vie éternelle.
Car Dieu a envoyé son Fils dans le monde, non pas pour juger le monde, mais pour que, par lui, le monde soit sauvé.

Homélie

En ce jour de la fête de la Croix glorieuse nous nous rappelons non seulement la Croix qui nous a sauvée, mais également la longue traversée du peuple d’Israël, qui est la nôtre. Leur vie dans le désert représente exactement notre découragement quotidien et notre incapacité de comprendre le projet de Dieu dans notre vie et aussi notre infidèle à l’appel de Dieu. La première lecture nous rappelle la fidélité de Dieu et son amour pour son peuple. Saint Jean nous renvoie vers ce Dieu qui nous aime encore. Il a envoyé son Fils unique, non pas pour nous juger, mais par Lui que le monde soit sauver.

Quand nous fixons notre regard sur Jésus qui est à la Croix, pour notre étonnement, nous découvrons en Jésus un regard de l’accomplissement de la volonté de Dieu, un regard rempli de joie et de contentement. Ce visage est un visage d’une mère après la naissance de son enfant, épuisée et fatiguée, pourtant elle est remplie de joie et de l’accomplissement. Seulement une mère peut comprendre cette joie et ce bonheur.

Chers amis, Dieu veut partager avec nous cette joie et ce bonheur. Il veut que nous soyons toujours heureux et content. C’est pourquoi Il a pris notre croix, les croix du monde. Il ne nous demande pas de prendre la croix des autres, mais celle de nôtre. Si nous regardons la vie du couple, nous pouvons nous confirmer que la vie du couple n’est pas que d’une vie de rose et de bonté, pourtant pour tous ceux et celles qui ont résisté à la tentation de chercher que la joie personnelle, peuvent nous témoigner la joie que Dieu partage avec eux dans la vie du mariage. Dieu ne nous propose pas la souffrance ou la croix pour avoir la joie.

Jean nous invite à découvrir ce Dieu et à croire en Jésus, notre sauveur et notre Dieu. N’oublions pas les chrétiens qui souffrent à cause de leur foi et en particulièrement pour les chrétiens en Irak, en Syrie et dans bien d’autres pays. Ils ont besoin de nos prières. Prions et rendons grâce au Seigneur pour tous ceux et celles qui portent la croix des autres. Confions à Lui les familles déchirées, séparées et les couples qui vivent en difficulté.

En ce jour de la fête de la Croix glorieuse, nous te prions, Seigneur : Augment notre foi et notre amour ; Donne-nous force et courage pour te suivre avec confiance. Fais de notre vie, de nos joies et de nos souffrances une offrande d’amour qui rejoigne la tienne pour que le monde soit sauvé.

Gospel text (Mt 18,21-35):

Peter asked Jesus, «Lord, how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister? Seven times?». Jesus answered, «No, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. This story throws light on the kingdom of heaven. A king decided to settle the accounts of his servants. Among the first was one who owed him ten thousand gold ingots. As the man could not repay the debt, the king commanded that he be sold as a slave with his wife, children and all his goods in payment. The official threw himself at the feet of the king and said, ‘Give me time, and I will pay you back everything’. The king took pity on him and not only set him free but even canceled his debt.

»This official then left the king's presence and he met one of his companions who owed him a hundred pieces of silver. He grabbed him by the neck and almost strangled him, shouting, ‘Pay me what you owe!’. His companion threw himself at his feet and asked him, ‘Give me time, and I will pay everything’. The other did not agree, but sent him to prison until he had paid all his debt.

»His companions saw what happened. They were indignant and so they went and reported everything to their lord. Then the lord summoned his official and said, ‘Wicked servant, I forgave you all that you owed when you begged me to do so. Weren't you bound to have pity on your companion as I had pity on you?’. The lord was now angry, so he handed his servant over to be punished, until he had paid his whole debt». Jesus added, «So will my heavenly Father do with you unless each of you sincerely forgive your brother or sister».

Homily

We live in a world of revenge, war, racism, violence and discrimination. Patience, non-violence and dialogue have lost their place in a world of precipitation and fast result. On behalf of the good of the majority and democracy, violence and war are justified. Today's world has sadly given birth to the new form of terrorism and the world is willing to respond in violence. Fear has already invaded and we are looking for solutions.

Like Peter we ask this question to Jesus, "Lord, how often should I forgive him? Given these crimes and violence, how do we forgive? It is enough, and we have no more time and patience. All seem to be in a hurry and emergency.

The first reading invites us to enter into ourselves at the deepest possible. Do not look at your neighbor errors. A look inside of ourselves will lead us to a divine opening. During the opening we will encounter the God who dwells in us. We will realize that we are send by God to announce the good tiding of love and forgiveness.

All people who have had this divine encounter will be able to forgive, because they have already tasted this pardon. They know they will not confine themselves. Forgiveness is a sign of knowledge and acceptation. It is to say to our companion just like a mother who says to her child that I know you and love you. To tell to the other person gently, that you take a distance from the acts committed, but not from the person. The sacrament of reconciliation is a way that allows us to accept us with our weaknesses, limits and to realize that the Father will never distances Himself from us.

Through this sacrament of reconciliation, God is there for us to renew His divine covenant in the grace of baptism, in the origin of our being. We find our place as children of God, our own identity. Beyond weaknesses, God reiterated to us his tenderness, his love and forgiveness. In this sacrament He gives us a new heart and helps us to learn to love again. The risen Christ deposits in us His Spirit that restores us to the divine fellowship. That is why St. Paul tells us, "If we live, we live to the Lord; if we die, we die for the Lord. In our life and in death we belong to the Lord. " Let us live as children of God, let us forgive each other in love as God forgives us. Amen.
