Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 21, 28-32)

Jésus disait aux chefs des prêtres et aux anciens : « Que pensez-vous de ceci ? Un homme avait deux fils. Il vint trouver le premier et lui dit : 'Mon enfant, va travailler aujourd'hui à ma vigne.' Celui-ci répondit : 'Je ne veux pas.' Mais ensuite, s'étant repenti, il y alla. Abordant le second, le père lui dit la même chose. Celui-ci répondit : 'Oui, Seigneur !' et il n'y alla pas. Lequel des deux a fait la volonté du père ? » Ils lui répondent : « Le premier ».

Jésus leur dit : « Amen, je vous le déclare : les publicains et les prostituées vous précèdent dans le royaume de Dieu. Car Jean Baptiste est venu à vous, vivant selon la justice, et vous n'avez pas cru à sa parole ; tandis que les publicains et les prostituées y ont cru. Mais vous, même après avoir vu cela, vous ne vous êtes pas repentis pour croire à sa parole. »

Comment pouvons-nous comprendre le comportement de Dieu ? Le dimanche dernier le prophète Isaïe nous a dit que notre Dieu ne pense pas comme les hommes, Il n’agit pas comme nous. Il regarde notre engagement et la manière dont nous vivons notre vie chrétienne. L’évangile du jour nous présente une histoire de ce même genre. Dieu porte attention non pas à nos paroles, mais à nos actes concrète.

Le mot clé du jour est ‘la conversion’. Dieu nous invite à nous convertir de notre méchanceté, de notre habitude mauvaise, et de notre mal vaillance. Nous n’avons plus le droit de vivre notre vie dans le passé. Regardons notre vie présente, voyons et assurons nous-même, si nous faisons la volonté de Dieu. Dans l’évangile nous avons deux modèle de comportement : d’une part, le refus abrupt et quelque peu insolent du premier fils qui, ensuite, change d’avis et d’autre part, l’acceptation immédiate et respectueuse du second fils qui, en fait, n’obéit pas.

Quelle est la volonté de Dieu pour nous aujourd’hui ? Quel projet que Dieu nous a confié ? Les anciens sont invités à être les modèles pour les autres. La mère est appelée à faire découvrir aux enfants l’amour d’une mère. Le couple est invité à rendre visible au monde l’amour et l’unité de la Trinité. Les enfants sont invités à écouter la parole des parents et des anciens. C’est dans cette écoute qu’ils peuvent se grandir comme les enfants de Dieu.

Pourquoi attendre encore. Il n’est jamais tard pour se convertir et s’en remettre à la fidélité du Seigneur. Puisque notre Dieu est un Dieu de patience, Il nous attend, comme un Père qui s’attend pour son enfant. Cette patience du Seigneur nous aide à raviver notre espérance. L’évangile nous appelle non seulement à nous convertir, également à répondre positivement à cette mission du Seigneur.

Nous pouvons bien réduire un message simple de cet évangile. Se convertir est en vérité, est un processus de rétablir une alliance nouvelle, divine, celle de Jésus sur la Croix. Un amour inconditionnel, un pardon sans limite, une ouverture à la miséricorde Dieu. En ce dimanche prenons l’invitation du Seigneur comme un appel personnel et salutaire. « Changez vos cœurs, croyez à la Bonne Nouvelle ! Changez de vie, croyez que Dieu vous aime, Amen.

Gospel text (Mt 20,28-32):

Jesus went on to say to the chief priests and the elders of the people, «What do you think of this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said to him: ‘Son, today go and work in my vineyard’. And the son answered: ‘I don't want to’. But later he thought better of it and went. Then the father went to the second and gave him the same command. This son replied: ‘I will go, sir’, but he did not go.

»Which of the two did what the father wanted?». They answered, «The first». And Jesus said to them, «Truly, I say to you: the publicans and the prostitutes are ahead of you on the way to the kingdom of heaven. For John came to show you the way of goodness but you did not believe him, yet the publicans and the prostitutes did. You were witnesses of this, but you neither repented nor believed him».

Homily

How can we understand the behavior of God? The last Sunday, the prophet Isaiah told us that our God does not think like men, He does not act like us. He looks at our engagement and how we live our Christian life. The Gospel of the day presents a history of the same kind. God pays attention, not our words, but our concrete actions. As saint Jean write, we have love not by discourse and words, but in truth.

The key word of the day is 'conversion'. God invites us to repent of our wickedness, our bad habits and our bad behavior and particularly our refusal to the forgiveness of God. We no longer have the right to live our lives in the past. Looking at our present life, see and assure ourselves, if we do the will of God. In the Gospel we have two models of behavior: first, the abrupt and somewhat insolent refusal of the first son, who then changes his mind and on the other hand, immediate acceptance and respect of the second son who in fact, does not obey.
What is God's will for us today? What plan God has given us? Elders are invited to be models for others. The mother is called to show to her children the love of a mother. The couple is asked to make visible to the world the invisible love and the unity of the Trinity. Children are invited to listen to the voices of parents and elders. It is in this listening that they can grow as children of God. It is here we will help the society where we live, in the transformation of the world and the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

Why wait. It is never late to convert and rely on the Lord's faithfulness, because, our God is a God of patience, He expects us, as a father who wait for the return of the lost child. The patience of the Lord helps us to rekindle our hope. The gospel calls us not only to be converted, also to respond positively to the mission of the Lord.

We may reduce a simple message of this gospel. Conversion in truth, is a process of re-establishing a new covenant, a divine alliance that of Jesus on the Cross where we discover the unconditional love, forgiveness without limit, openness to God's mercy. Let us take the message of this Sunday as the Lord's invitation as a personal and wholesome appeal. "Change your hearts, believe the Good News! Change your life; believe that God loves you, Amen.
