Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 13, 1-9)

Un jour, des gens vinrent rapporter à Jésus l'affaire des Galiléens que Pilate avait fait massacrer pendant qu'ils offraient un sacrifice.
Jésus leur répondit : « Pensez-vous que ces Galiléens étaient de plus grands pécheurs que tous les autres Galiléens, pour avoir subi un tel sort ? Eh bien non, je vous le dis ; et si vous ne vous convertissez pas, vous périrez tous comme eux. Et ces dix-huit personnes tuées par la chute de la tour de Siloé, pensez-vous qu'elles étaient plus coupables que tous les autres habitants de Jérusalem ? Eh bien non, je vous le dis ; et si vous ne vous convertissez pas, vous périrez tous de la même manière. »
Jésus leur disait encore cette parabole : « Un homme avait un figuier planté dans sa vigne. Il vint chercher du fruit sur ce figuier, et n'en trouva pas. Il dit alors à son vigneron : 'Voilà trois ans que je viens chercher du fruit sur ce figuier, et je n'en trouve pas. Coupe-le. À quoi bon le laisser épuiser le sol ?' Mais le vigneron lui répondit : 'Seigneur, laisse-le encore cette année, le temps que je bêche autour pour y mettre du fumier. Peut-être donnera-t-il du fruit à l'avenir. Sinon, tu le couperas.' »

Le message

« Seigneur, laisse-le encore cette année. » cette supplication du vigneron nous rappelle la supplication d’Abraham pour son cousin et aussi de Moïse pour le peuple d’Israël. Dans ces histoires, Dieu répond positivement aux demandes de son peuple et Il nous répondra positivement.

Même notre Dieu est un Dieu qui patiente, Il souhaite que nous donnions fruit. Un fruit par notre propre nature, en tant qu’enfant de Dieu. Dieu n’est pas un Dieu qui puni mais Celui qui nous fait grandir et qui nous aide à vivre notre vie pleinement.*

Gospel text (Lc 13,1-9):

One day some persons told Jesus what had occurred in the Temple: Pilate had Galileans killed and their blood mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus replied, «Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this? I tell you: no. But unless you change your ways, you will all perish as they did. And those eighteen persons in Siloah who were crushed when the tower fell, do you think they were more guilty than all the others in Jerusalem? I tell you: no. But unless you change your ways, you will all perish as they did».

And Jesus continued with this story, «A man had a fig tree growing in his vine-yard and he came looking for fruit on it, but found none. Then he said to the gardener: ‘Look here, for three years now I have been looking for figs on this tree and I have found none. Cut it down, why should it use up the ground?’. The gardener replied: ‘Leave it one more year, so that I may dig around it and add some fertilizer; and perhaps it will bear fruit from now on. But if it doesn't, you can cut it down».

The message

The key words to meditate of this gospel are reconciliation and the patience of God. God was always patient with the people of Israel and today we can surly count on this patience. At the same time, we can’t give the same guaranty of duration to the reconciliation. This we have to start immediately.

Just as the gardener replied, it is now we have to start to look for ways to get reconciled with God, hoping that one day we will be capable of giving good fruit like the grains which fell on the good soil. God believes that we are capable of giving good fruit, good in God’s manner. If we refuse to do good, starting with reconciliation, we have to nourish ourselves with evangelical virtues (fertilizer) and wait for the fruit.
