Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 7, 7-12)

En ce temps-là,

Jésus disait à ses disciples :
« Demandez, on vous donnera ;
cherchez, vous trouverez ;
frappez, on vous ouvrira.
En effet, quiconque demande reçoit ;
qui cherche trouve ;
à qui frappe, on ouvrira.
Ou encore :
lequel d’entre vous donnera une pierre à son fils
quand il lui demande du pain ?
ou bien lui donnera un serpent,
quand il lui demande un poisson ?
Si donc vous, qui êtes mauvais,
vous savez donner de bonnes choses à vos enfants,
combien plus votre Père qui est aux cieux
donnera- t-il de bonnes choses
à ceux qui les lui demandent !
Donc, tout ce que vous voudriez que les autres fassent pour vous,
faites- le pour eux, vous aussi :
voilà ce que disent la Loi et les Prophètes. »

Le message

Le temps de Carême est un moment de prière et de bonheur. C’est un moment offert aux chrétiens pour qu’ils découvrent ce Dieu qui nous aime. Avant d’appliquer cet évangile, il y a une condition impérative: connaitre la volonté du Père. Tout ce que nous allons demander, c’est pour accomplir sa volonté. Comment pouvons-nous Lui demander sans connaitre sa volonté ?

Nous savons que Dieu n’agit pas comme nous. Très souvent nous n’agissons pas comme il faut, car nos actions sont les réactions conditionnées par les autres. Alors Dieu agit. Dieu a reconnu que l’homme agit bien. Il nous rappelle que Dieu qui est bon par excellence, agit dans sa bonté et dans sa générosité, et notre prière y trouve son espoir.

Gospel text (Mt 7,7-12):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; and the door will be opened to him who knocks. Would any of you give a stone to your son when he asks for bread? Or give him a snake, when he asks for a fish? As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there you have the Law and the Prophets».

The message

In this week of conversion, we continue our meditation on prayer. Jesus is asking us to pray. At the same time; He doesn’t give us in detail what we should ask and what is the need to ask, because God knows our needs much better than we. To understand these questions, I will propose something purely logic.

If we ask, we should know what we are asking and why we are asking. If we ask something from God, we should do His will. Thus before asking, we should know His will. This knowledge is more important than asking. If we complain that our prayers remain unanswered, it is because, they may not be coherent with the will of the Father or we are something which may harm us. How can God give us something which is not good for us?

Our prayer finds its foundation in the generosity and goodness of God. The prayer of Ester is a good model for us. Let us learn to have such confidence in God and try to know His will, before asking. If we don’t the will of the Father, it is better not to ask, because God will never abandon us and He will give us without asking.
