Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 19, 3-12)

Des pharisiens s'approchèrent de lui pour le mettre à l'épreuve ; ils lui demandèrent : « Est-il permis de renvoyer sa femme pour n'importe quel motif ? »
Il répondit : « N'avez-vous pas lu l'Écriture ? Au commencement, le Créateur les fit homme et femme, et il leur dit : 'Voilà pourquoi l'homme quittera son père et sa mère, il s'attachera à sa femme, et tous deux ne feront plus qu'un.' À cause de cela, ils ne sont plus deux, mais un seul. Donc, ce que Dieu a uni, que l'homme ne le sépare pas ! »
Les pharisiens lui répliquent : « Pourquoi donc Moïse a-t-il prescrit la remise d'un acte de divorce avant la séparation ? »
Jésus leur répond : « C'est en raison de votre endurcissement que Moïse vous a concédé de renvoyer vos femmes. Mais au commencement, il n'en était pas ainsi. Or je vous le dis : si quelqu'un renvoie sa femme — sauf en cas d'union illégitime — pour en épouser une autre, il est adultère. »
Ses disciples lui disent : « Si telle est la situation de l'homme par rapport à sa femme, il n'y a pas intérêt à se marier. »
Il leur répondit : « Ce n'est pas tout le monde qui peut comprendre cette parole, mais ceux à qui Dieu l'a révélée. Il y a des gens qui ne se marient pas car, de naissance, ils en sont incapables ; il y en a qui ne peuvent pas se marier car ils ont été mutilés par les hommes ; il y en a qui ont choisi de ne pas se marier à cause du Royaume des cieux. Celui qui peut comprendre, qu'il comprenne ! »

Le message

L’homme n’est pas fait pour vivre seul, il est appelé à vivre et partager sa vie avec les autres. Quelle joie de pouvoir vivre notre dans une communauté qui s’amie et qui partage ! Devant tant de séparation et de divorce les jeunes du jour ont pris de peur et d’inquiétude. Tous les couples qui vivent leur vie ensemble nous racontent leur joie de la vie du mariage. Que le Seigneur les bénisse et les garde.

Chaque fois que l’homme consacre sa vie pour le Royaume de Dieu, Dieu se réjouit. C’est grâce à lui que l’homme est capable de pouvoir tout donner pour le Seigneur. N’oublions pas de prier pour la vocation.

Gospel text (Mt 19,3-12):

Some Pharisees approached Jesus. They wanted to test him and asked, «Is a man allowed to divorce his wife for any reason he wants?». Jesus replied, «Have you not read that in the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and he said: ‘Man has now to leave father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one body’? So they are no longer two but one body; let no one separate what God has joined».

They asked him, «Then, why did Moses command us to write a bill of dismissal in order to divorce?». Jesus replied, «Moses knew your stubborn heart, so he allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not so in the beginning. Therefore I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, unless it be for concubinage, and marries another, commits adultery».

The disciples said, «If that is the condition of a married man, it is better not to marry». Jesus said to them, «Not everybody can accept what you have just said, but only those who have received this gift. Some are born incapable of marriage. Some have been made that way by others. But there are some who have given up the possibility of marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who can accept it, accept it».

The message

All those who have tried to put the Lord in test found themselves caught by their own rhetoric. They have proved their hard heartedness which has forced Moses to compromise.

Jesus addresses something more important: the union of the creation. God willed that the people live together and experience the love of the Father. It is in this love that the young couples are united and it is in the same love that they discover the divine love received through the other. Man in his weakness and wickedness has manipulated this divine love and allowed the individualism to enter in to the life of marriage. Jesus by his presence re-establishes the unity of God’s union in the life of marriage. Anyone who works against this union is working against the will of the Father.

Jesus is proposing the celibate life only to the strong and to the called. He knows well that without the grace of His Father no one can live a meaningful celibate life. Let us pray for vocation
