Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 14, 1-12)

En ce temps-là, Hérode, prince de Galilée, apprit la renommée de Jésus et dit à ses serviteurs : « Cet homme, c'est Jean le Baptiste, il est ressuscité d'entre les morts, et voilà pourquoi il a le pouvoir de faire des miracles. »
Car Hérode avait fait arrêter Jean, l'avait fait enchaîner et mettre en prison, à cause d'Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe. En effet, Jean lui avait dit : « Tu n'as pas le droit de vivre avec elle. » Hérode cherchait à le mettre à mort, mais il eut peur de la foule qui le tenait pour un prophète.
Lorsque arriva l'anniversaire d'Hérode, la fille d'Hérodiade dansa devant tout le monde, et elle plut à Hérode. Aussi s'engagea-t-il par serment à lui donner tout ce qu'elle demanderait. Poussée par sa mère, elle dit : « Donne-moi ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean le Baptiste. » Le roi fut contrarié, mais à cause de son serment et des convives, il commanda de la lui donner. Il envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison. La tête de celui-ci fut apportée sur un plat et donnée à la jeune fille, qui l'apporta à sa mère.
Les disciples de Jean arrivèrent pour prendre son corps, l'ensevelirent et allèrent en informer Jésus.

Le message

Hérode a reconnu que Jean Baptiste était un des prophètes et il a reconnu ses fautes. Une reconnaissance de nos fautes sans aucun engagement personnel nous ne fera aucun bien.

Nous devons reconnaitre que le monde manipule les choses, pourtant nous sommes invités à y être témoins de la vérité, à y être un signe de l’espérance et à y propager la paix et le pardon.

Gospel text (Mt 14,1-12):

On one occasion the news about Jesus reached King Herod. And he said to his servants, «This man is John the Baptist. John has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him».

Herod had, in fact, ordered that John be arrested, bound in chains and put in prison be-cause of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. For John had said to him, «It is not right for you to have her as wife». Herod wanted to kill him but he did not dare, because he feared the people who regarded John as a prophet.

On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst of the guests; she so delighted Herod that he promised under oath to give her anything she asked. The girl, following the advice of her mother, said, «Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a dish». The king was very displeased, but because he had made this promise under oath in the presence of the guests, he ordered it to be given her. So he had John beheaded in prison and his head brought on a dish and given to the girl. The girl then took it to her mother. Then John's disciples came to take his body and bury it. And they went to bring the news to Jesus.

The message

The conscience pricks and Herod ignores the invitation of the Lord for a conversion. It is not enough to recognize our mistakes but we have to engage personally and sincerely, repent for our sin and start to walk on the right path. This personal engagement should be guided by our faith and hope.

We have to humbly accept that the world where we live, refuse to repent and correct its evil doing. However we should not forget that the Lord has sent us here to be witnesses of His love and forgiveness. Let the world discover through our lives that we are Christians, not only by our words, but also by our good deeds.
