Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 16, 13-19)

Jésus était venu dans la région de Césarée-de-Philippe, et il demandait à ses disciples : « Le Fils de l'homme, qui est-il, d'après ce que disent les hommes ? »
Ils répondirent : « Pour les uns, il est Jean Baptiste ; pour d'autres, Élie ; pour d'autres encore, Jérémie ou l'un des prophètes. »
Jésus leur dit : « Et vous, que dites-vous ? Pour vous, qui suis-je ? »
Prenant la parole, Simon-Pierre déclara : « Tu es le Messie, le Fils du Dieu vivant ! »
Prenant la parole à son tour, Jésus lui déclara : « Heureux es-tu, Simon fils de Yonas : ce n'est pas la chair et le sang qui t'ont révélé cela, mais mon Père qui est aux cieux.
Et moi, je te le déclare : Tu es Pierre, et sur cette pierre je bâtirai mon Église ; et la puissance de la Mort ne l'emportera pas sur elle.
Je te donnerai les clefs du Royaume des cieux : tout ce que tu auras lié sur la terre sera lié dans les cieux, et tout ce que tu auras délié sur la terre sera délié dans les cieux. »

Le message

Le Seigneur a choisi Pierre et ses apôtres l’avaient accueilli avec un grand respect. Saint Jean arriva le premier au tombeau, mais laissa Pierre y entrer le premier. Saint Paul est descendu à Jérusalem pour consulter avec Pierre.

Nous suivons cette tradition fidèlement en suivant les pas de Pierre à travers notre cher Père François. Le monde a accueilli sa première exhortation avec un cœur ouvert et nous en sommes heureux de le lire et l’appliquer dans notre vie quotidienne.

Pourtant le Seigneur ne s’arrête pas à nous demander cette question personnelle : « Pour vous, qui suis-je ? » Avons-nous une réponse positive ? Prenons-nous conscience de notre responsabilité en tant que chrétiens, les anciens qui doivent montrer un bon chemin au monde en marchant sur le bon chemin par excellence, le chemin du Christ.

Gospel text (Mt 16,13-19):

When Jesus came to Caesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples, «Who do people say the Son of man is?». They said, «For some of them you are John the Baptist, for others Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the prophets». Jesus asked them, «But you, who do you say I am?». Peter answered, «You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God».

Jesus replied, «It is well for you, Simon Barjona, for it is not flesh or blood that has revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. And now I say to you: You are Peter (or Rock) and on this rock I will build my Church; and never will the powers of death overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and what you unbind on earth shall be unbound in heaven».

The message

It is not enough to be a good Christian, following the tradition of the Church, by accepting our Holy Father Francis as the successor of Peter, the head of the holy Church, the Church of Christ. It is important to find a positive answer to the question that Jesus has posed to Peter.

As baptized, we have to take the responsibility of announcing the Good News to the world, through our personal and community life. Peter was chosen as the head of the Church, of his Faith. It is in this Faith that we are called to live and witness.

Our Holy Father in his exhortation is inviting and reminding us of our baptismal responsibility: Keep the light of Resurrection alive through our daily lives. It is nice to be reminded.
