Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 7, 1-10)

Après avoir achevé tout son discours devant le peuple, Jésus entra dans la ville de Capharnaüm.
Un centurion de l'armée romaine avait un esclave auquel il tenait beaucoup ; celui-ci était malade, sur le point de mourir. Le centurion avait entendu parler de Jésus ; alors il lui envoya quelques notables juifs pour le prier de venir sauver son esclave.
Arrivés près de Jésus, ceux-ci le suppliaient : « Il mérite que tu lui accordes cette guérison. Il aime notre nation : c'est lui qui nous a construit la synagogue. »
Jésus était en route avec eux, et déjà il n'était plus loin de la maison, quand le centurion lui fit dire par des amis : « Seigneur, ne prends pas cette peine, car je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit. Moi-même, je ne me suis pas senti le droit de venir te trouver. Mais dis seulement un mot, et mon serviteur sera guéri. Moi qui suis un subalterne, j'ai des soldats sous mes ordres ; à l'un, je dis : 'Va', et il va ; à l'autre : 'Viens', et il vient ; et à mon esclave : 'Fais ceci', et il le fait. »
Entendant cela, Jésus fut dans l'admiration. Il se tourna vers la foule qui le suivait : « Je vous le dis, même en Israël, je n'ai pas trouvé une telle foi ! »

De retour à la maison, les envoyés trouvèrent l'esclave en bonne santé.

Le message

C’est les étrangers et les païens qui professent la foi et en profitent. La profession de la foi de ce centurion dépasse toute les autres et Jésus lui-même l’affirme. Avons-nous la même profondeur de la fois ?

La foi est un don de Dieu et Il la donne à tous ceux et celles qui la demandent. Elle est comparable avec une lumière qui éclaire notre chemin. Pourtant si nous ne la nourrissons pas par les huiles de grâce, elle ne peut plus nous éclairer.

Vivons pleinement notre foi et elle nous amènera vers le Seigneur.

Gospel text (Lc 7,1-10):

When Jesus had finished teaching to the people, He went to Capernaum. There was a captain whose servant was very sick and near to death, a man very dear to him. So when he heard about Jesus, he sent some elders of the Jews to persuade him to come and save his servant's life. The elders came to Jesus and begged him earnestly, saying, «He deserves this of you, for he loves our people and even built a synagogue for us».

Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the captain sent friends to give this message, «Sir, do not trouble yourself for I am not worthy to welcome you under my roof. You see I didn't approach you myself. Just give the order and my servant will be healed. For I myself, a junior officer, give orders to my soldiers and I say to this one: ‘Go’, and he goes; and to the other: ‘Come’, and he comes; and to my servant: ‘Do this’, and he does it».

On hearing these words, Jesus was filled with admiration. He turned and said to the people with him, «I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith». The people sent by the captain went back to his house; there they found that the servant was well.

The message

While living in a world which refuses to believe in the presence of God, the faith of this captain does inspire us. His faith overtakes the faith in the person of Jesus to the power of His Word. The Word became flesh has given the hope to this captain in the Word itself.

The admiration of Jesus on the faith of this foreigner is quite just and applauding. Jesus is inviting us to learn for this profession of Faith and live our faith fully.

While acknowledging that the Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit, let us not forget to nourish this Faith regularly by our perseverance and faithfulness to the promise of the Lord. He is still with us and we have to just express our desire to have Him and prepare our souls to welcome Him. He is standing outside of our home knocking at the door. Are we ready to open the door for Him?
