Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 2, 23-28)

Un jour de sabbat, Jésus marchait à travers les champs de blé ; et ses disciples, chemin faisant, se mirent à arracher des épis. Les pharisiens lui disaient : « Regarde ce qu'ils font le jour du sabbat ! Cela n'est pas permis. » Jésus leur répond : « N'avez-vous jamais lu ce que fit David, lorsqu'il fut dans le besoin et qu'il eut faim, lui et ses compagnons ? Au temps du grand prêtre Abiathar, il entra dans la maison de Dieu et mangea les pains de l'offrande que seuls les prêtres peuvent manger, et il en donna aussi à ses compagnons. » Jésus leur disait encore : « Le sabbat a été fait pour l'homme, et non pas l'homme pour le sabbat. Voilà pourquoi le Fils de l'homme est maître, même du sabbat. »

Le message

« Le sabbat a été fait pour l’homme, et non pas l’homme pour le sabbat. » Jésus nous affirme que nous devons nous adapter au changement et rester fidèle à la loi d’amour. Une loi qui ne respecte pas l’homme, n’a pas de raison d’être.

Nous sommes les enfants de Dieu. Ce dieu est le créateur qui ne s’arrête pas de travailler, fidèle à tout ce qu’il nous a promis. Jésus nous demande d’être fidèles à cette promesse de l’amour et cette fidélité ne se traduit pas nécessairement comme une fidélité aux moyens proposés, tel le sabbat.

Ne restons pas fidèles aux moyens, mais à l’essentiel : l’amour.

La prière pour l’unité des chrétiens

Seigneur Jésus, tu nous offres sans cesse ton amitié. Dans cet amour confiant, puissions-nous marcher les uns vers les autres et, dans l’Esprit, reconnaître chacun comme enfant de Dieu et ami de Jésus. Dieu de vie, conduis-nous vers la justice et la paix.

23 One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain.

24 And the Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?"

25 And he said to them, "Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him:

26 how he entered the house of God, when Abi'athar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?"

27 And he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath;

28 so the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath."

The message

Jesus is reminding the Pharisees of their own history to defend his disciples. He is pointing to us that we should not be struck with the means, but remain faithful to the essentials of life; Love.

Every law, which does not consider the human realities and human concerns, will lose the very meaning of its existence, because all the laws are made for the well being of human beings in general, and the individuals in particular.

Jesus, who has taught us to love and how to respond to this love seems to remind us the very truth that man forgets when he applies the law: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

The Prayer

Lord, help us to remain to the essentials in our lives. Teach us to respect all human beings and their feelings. Before we apply the civil laws, inspire us to apply your law of love, which is the foundation of happiness in the world. Amen.
