Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 3,31-36):

Abbé Melcior QUEROL i Solà

Gospel text

(Jn 3:16-21):

God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.

“Light came into the world”

Fr. Damien LIN Yuanheng

Today with the myriad of opinions in modern living, it may seem that truth does not exist —truth about God, truth about gender issue, truth about marriage, moral truths, and, ultimately, truth about oneself.

Today's gospel passage identifies Christ to be “the way and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). Separate from Christ, there is only desolation, falsehood and death. There is one and only one road to heaven and it is called Jesus Christ.

Christ is not just another opinion. Christ is Truth itself. To deny truth is like someone who insists in closing his eyes from the sun-light. Whether he likes it or not, the sun will always be there; but the poor fellow has freely chosen to close his eyes from the sun of truth. Likewise, many spend themselves in their career with sheer will-power, they claim to fulfill their full potential, forgetting that they could only attain the truth about themselves by walking with Christ.

On the other hand, according to Benedict XVI, “each person finds his good by adherence to God's plan for him, in order to realize it fully: in this plan, he finds his truth, and through adherence to this truth he becomes free (cf. Jn 8:32)” (Encyclical Letter "Caritas in Veritate"). The truth of each one is a calling to be a son or daughter of God in the heavenly home: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification” (1Thess 4:3). God wants free daughters and sons, not slaves.

Truly, the perfect “I” is a joint project between God and I. When we strive for holiness, we begin to reflect the truth of God in our lives. The Pope said it beautifully: “Each saint is like a ray of light that shines forth from the Word of God” (Apostolic Exhortation "Verbum Domini").

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 3,16-21):

Gospel text

(Jn 3:7-15):

Jesus said to Nicodemus: “‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can this happen?” Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

The Application

Jesus invites us with Nicodemus to live a life totally oriented towards heaven. A life received and lived, the biological life (already a gift from God) welcomed the spiritual life (a recognition of the configuration of our life to the divine presence and his action in us), so that in our words and actions, God will make himself visible and people will recognise that God is active in us.

This life was previously reserved only for mystics. Through the death and resurrection of the Lord, we are now all invited to participate in it, and become true children of God. Dying in Christ (dying to sin), an invitation to participate in his death (He died for our sins), and rising with him (as new born), to participate in his resurrection, by living on earth. It is the Holy Spirit who will do everything in us, provided we let him work in us. Well, the preparation to welcome the Holy Spirit begins.

Action of the day: Wilfully choose to die.

“You must be born from above”

Fr. Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal

(Sant Just Desvern, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, Jesus talks about the difficulty of foreseeing and knowing the action of the Holy Spirit: in fact, it “blows where it wills” (Jn 3:8). He ties it in with the testimony He is also giving and the need to be born from above. “You must be born from above.” (Jn 3:7), clearly says the Lord; a new life is necessary to have access to eternal life. It is not enough to "get by" to reach the Kingdom of Heaven; a new life, regenerated by the Spirit's action, is needed. Our professional, family, sporting, cultural, playful and, most than all, pious life, must be transformed by our Christian feeling and by God's action. Everything must be transversely impregnated by his Spirit. Nothing, but nothing at all, should make us stay outside the renewal God's Spirit, offers us.

A transformation where Jesus Christ is the catalyst. He, who previously had to suffer the Crucifixion and then resurrect, is who will send us God's Spirit. He who has come from above. He who has shown his power and his goodness, through his many miracles. He who always makes his Father's will. He who has suffered to the last drop of blood for us. Thanks to the Spirit He will send us, we “shall be able to ascend to the Kingdom of Heaven; by the Spirit we obtain his filial adoption; by the Spirit we are allowed to call God our ‘Father’, to participate of Christ's Grace and to receive the right to share the eternal glory” (Saint Basil the Great).

Let us give the Spirit's action our warmest welcome, let us listen to him and let us apply his inspirations so that each one of us —wherever we should be— can set up a good and noble example that inflames Christ's light.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 3,7-15):

Abbé Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal

(Sant Just Desvern, Barcelona, Espagne)

This is Divine Mercy Sunday. On this Sunday we are invited to contemplate our own miseries, which Jesus bore on the Cross and which he still bears for us today. To savour God's mercy, we must savour the miseries in our daily lives, travel from slavery born of sin, to liberation born of death and resurrection. The passion and death of the Lord was for the disciples, a real misery, a very painful trial. They knew that the sins of humanity has killed their Master, unjustly. Jesus comes to his disciples, who are totally lost in confidence and desperate.  They are invited to live their crosses and will later they will learn to associate it with the passion of Christ. They will do it with joy. If you are not ready to immerse yourself in these miseries, you can never discover the divine mercy.

The disciples find themselves together, certainly in fear and anxiety. "When evening came on that first day of the week, and the doors of the place where the disciples were staying were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be with you. Jesus gives them the Holy Spirit, a new creation, a rebirth, and the Lord's Church is born. It is the Holy Spirit who will animate, purify and teach them, so that they too become animators, purifiers and liberators.  They are taught by Jesus to associate their misery with the heart of God.

Thomas is invited to plunge into the misery of his unbelief, so that he may rise from his misery and taste God's mercy. I would rise up and go to my Father. We are that Thomas, unbelievers, still looking for the visible and palpable signs, so that we can rise up, and walk towards the Father who is waiting for us. With Thomas, we will be lifted up, to discover in Jesus, 'My Lord and My God', a wonderful profession of faith.   Faith is a gift from God, yet believing is a personal commitment, where we express the foundation of life.

On this Divine Mercy Sunday, we can ask ourselves this question: how do we translate, 'I believe' into simple and understandable terms? In Jesus, the disciples are invited to discover a man who walks through the wall and can be seen and touched, a call to live from vision to faith. Jesus passed on the mission that the Father entrusted to him to his disciples. The disciples of the Lord have passed on to us the mission that Jesus entrusted to them.  And what is this mission, the foundation of our faith?

In the death and resurrection of the Lord, we discover an all-powerful God who allows his only Son to die on the cross. A God who desires the conversion of sinners rather than death. He forgives us and is full of goodness and generosity. Jesus is risen and alive.  The Holy Spirit loves and protects us. Thanks to Him, we feel a very close and intimate God. Since we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit, this God in the Holy Spirit dwells in us, and we can serve Him, by putting ourselves at the service of the people, the people of God. I believe this truth and I seek this God in myself, in my brothers and sisters and I become this God who loves them and forgives them, who protects them, not because they deserve, but this God who dwells in them, deserves them, this God who dwells in me asks for it.  It is here that we become generous like God, learn to forgive easily, and pray for our persecutors. May this divine Mercy Sunday, incite in us, the necessity to forgive, be a living sign of God’s Mercy. Amen.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 16,15-20):

Gospel text

(Mk 16:15-20):

Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

Action of the day: Be missionary of Divine Mercy.

“Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature”

Mons. Agustí CORTÉS i Soriano Bishop of Sant Feliu de Llobregat(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, there is much to say about why the word of the Gospel does not echo with strength and conviction; why we Christians keep a hesitant silence regarding what we believe in, in spite of the so-called “new evangelization”. Each one will make his or her own analysis about this and will come up with their own particular version.

However, on the Feast of St. Mark, while listening to the Gospel and looking at the Evangelist, we cannot but proclaim assuredly and gratefully where the source is and where the strength of our word lies.

The Evangelist does not speak because he has been told to do so by a recent sociological study, or because of political “prudence”, or because “he feels like saying what he thinks”, no; he does so because a presence and a command have certainly compelled him, from the outside, without coercion, but with the authority of He who deserves all the credit: “Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all creation” (Mk 16:15). That is, we obediently evangelize, although we must do so gleefully and confidently.

On the other hand, our word is not presented just like any other, out of the market of ideas and views; rather, it has the whole weight of every strong and explicit message. Life or death depends upon its recognition or rejection; and its truth and capacity for conviction come from the testimonial way, that is, it appears accredited by the signs of power in favor of the needy. This is why the word actually is an “announcement” — a public, happy and excited statement of a conclusive and saving fact.

Why, then, our silence? Fear? Shyness? St. Justin said that “though unlettered and without any fluency, they could persuade mankind because of their virtue.” Thus, the sign or miracle of virtue is our eloquence. Let the Lord carry out, at least, His work, in our midst and with us: “While the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs” (Mk 16:20).

Gospel text

(Mk 16:9-15):

When Jesus had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country. They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either. [But] later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.”

The Application

Whatever may be the mission which is entrusted to us, it is in the NAME of the Lord. We must never forget that we speak and act in the name of God, in the name of God the Trinity. And may our words and actions bring life to every being, protect it and make it grow, as God does. When I say mission, it is quite varied. For example, for a married man, the mission is towards his wife, his family, for parents towards their children, etc. I would not want to reduce mission, naively, to announcing the Good News to the outside world (who do not know God), for we are all, by baptism called to be missionaries, wherever we are.

As we heard yesterday in the first reading, let us first proclaim God's mercy. Very often we announce punishment and provoke fear and guilt. Jesus did not ask to announce all this. He wanted to forgive all, and Paul is the best example. God does not desire the death of sinners, but that they be converted and live their lives fully in freedom, as children of God.

Action of the day: Be merciful.

“Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature”

Fr. Jacques PHILIPPE

(Cordes sur Ciel, France)

Today, relying on the risen Jesus, we must rediscover the Gospel as the "Good News". The Gospel is not a law that tyrannizes us. Occasionally, we may have fallen into the temptation of thinking that non-Christians are more tranquil than us and do what they want, whereas we have to abide by a list of commandments. This is a merely superficial view of things.

Personally, one of my biggest concerns is that the Gospel may always be presented as good news, happy news that fills our hearts with joy and consolation.

The teaching of Jesus is certainly demanding, but Thérèse of the Child Jesus helps us to really perceive it as good news, since for her the Gospel is the revelation of God’s tenderness, of God’s mercy with each one of His children, and it points out the laws of life that lead to happiness. The center of Christian life is to welcome with appreciation the kindness and the goodness of God - revelation of his merciful love - and allow us to be transformed by this love.

The spiritual journey taken by Saint Thérèse, the "Little Way", is an authentic way of holiness, a path with room for all, made in such a way that no one can get discouraged — neither the humblest, nor the poorest, nor the sinner. Thus, Thérèse anticipates the Vatican II Council that strongly affirms that holiness is not an exceptional way, but a call to all Christians from which nobody should be excluded. Even the most vulnerable and lowly among us can respond to the call to holiness.

This Holiness consists of a “way all about confidence and love.” Thus, “it is your arms, Jesus, which are the lift to carry me to Heaven (…). You, my God, have exceeded my hope, and I would like to sing your mercies” (St. Thérèse of Lisieux).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 16,9-15):
