Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 14,1.7-11):

Abbé Josep FONT i Gallart

(Getafe, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 14,1-6):

One Sabbath Jesus had gone to eat a meal in the house of a leading Pharisee, and He was carefully watched. In front of him was a man suffering from dropsy; so Jesus asked the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, «Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?». But no one answered. Jesus then took the man, healed him and sent him away. And he addressed them, «If your lamb or your ox falls into a well on a Sabbath day, who among you doesn't hurry to pull it out?». And they could not answer.

The Application

Jesus is in a house of a leader of the Pharisees and he is invited. A guest is honoured and also observed, because he is in an important place, surrounded by the elites of the society. Jesus' presence in this house tells us that Jesus is not biased. If we want to invite him, he will come to our house and stay there. Once he is in our house, he will help us to understand the sacred scriptures, the divine will, and how we can, with our limits, worship God in truth and in Spirit.

In a leader of the Pharisees, he teaches them that a Sabbath day, a day of rest, certainly deserves respect. He invites us to discover that a Sabbath day, a day of rest, has what purpose? Is it not to give glory to God, to honour the Lord? On this day of rest, of Sabbath, if my act glorifies the Lord, giving glory to God, this act deserves recognition. Jesus invites us to pay attention, and He directs our gaze, not to the acts, as they are presented, but to the intentions, the finality, especially the heart that acts in love.

Action of the day: Check your intentions.

«Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we will center our attention on the piercing question Jesus asked the Pharisees: «Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?» (Lk 14:4), and in their very significant silence, as per St. Luke: «But no one answered» (Lk 14:4).

Many are the Gospel episodes where Our Lord reproaches their hypocrisy to the Pharisees. It is quite noteworthy how God's outstanding interest in substantiating up to which point He dislikes this sin —false appearances, deceitful actions—, which is placed at the antipodes of Christ's praise to Nathaniel: «Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him» (Jn 1:47). God loves the heart's simplicity, the spirit's naivety while, on the other hand, He rejects with energy the intricacies, the shady looks, the double standards, the hypocrisy.

That which is significant in the Lord's question and in the Pharisees' silent reply is the bad conscience they had, deep inside. There was a man suffering from dropsy who was looking forward to be healed by Jesus. The fulfillment of the Judaic Law —ludicrous concentration on the letter with total disdain of the spirit— and the empty presumption of their blameless behavior, brings them to appear shocked by the attitude of Christ who, carried away by his merciful heart, does not allow any legal formalisms to prevent him from healing he who is ailing.

The Pharisees realize that their hypocrite behavior cannot be justified and this is what keeps them silent. In this passage a very clear lesson is shining through: the need to understand that saintliness is to follow Christ —to full enamorment— and not to coldly fulfill some legal precepts. The Commandments are holly because they come all the way directly from God's infinite Wisdom, but it is quite possible to live them in a legalist and empty way, and it is then when the incongruence appears of pretending to follow God and ending up by going behind ourselves.

Let the charming simplicity of the Mother of God direct our lives.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 14,1-6):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Lk 6,12-19):

Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, He called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom He called apostles: Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

Coming down the hill with them, Jesus stood on a level place. Many of his disciples were there and a large crowd of people who had come from all parts of Judea and Jerusalem and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon. They gathered to hear him and be healed of their diseases; likewise people troubled by evil spirits were healed. The entire crowd tried to touch him because of the power that went out from him and healed them all.

The Application

Jesus climbing up to the hill is always for a divine encounter. It is here that we are called to encounter with God. Every divine encounter is an enactment of our faith. This faith helps us to understand and live our Christian life, in its fulness. This Christian life is divided into two parts: contemplation of the Word of God and action, its fulfilment. We are all invited to listen to the Word of God, to discover His will, and to fulfil all that we have heard from the Lord. Jesus shows us that He Himself was in prayer and action was a consequence of that prayer.

Since prayer is a relationship, our attachment to the Lord, like a branch attached to the vine, is itself a prayer. We must not force ourselves to give fruit, for by our positive commitment, and our faithfulness to the divine will, will de facto give the fruit desired by the Lord. That is, by the impulse of the Holy Spirit, God will bear fruit in us, and all that he has initiated in us, by our cooperation, will be completed by the same Spirit.

If we look into the life of the Apostles, we will find that the Apostles of the Lord listened to the Lord and put His Word into practice, and they felt this impulse of the Holy Spirit within them, while they were in action. On this feast day, we are asked to read His Word and put it into practice. If we do so, we will see in ourselves the wonders of God, and through us others will feel the divine power.

Action of the day: Listen to the world of God

«Went out into the hills to pray»

+ Fr. Albert TAULÉ i Viñas

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we may contemplate a full day in the life of Jesus. A life with two clear sides: prayer and action. If, as Christians, we are to imitate Jesus' life, we cannot prescind of any of these two dimensions. All Christians, even those who are consecrated to a contemplative life, have, and must have, certain moments for praying and certain others for action. The length of time for each one may, of course, vary. We can see that even friars and nuns in close orders devote a good part of their time to some kind of work. On the other hand, those of us that are more “secular”, if we wish to imitate Jesus, we should not carry out a frantic activity without spreading it with a prayer. St. Jerome says: «Even though the Apostle ordered us to pray all the time, (...) we must devote to this exercise certain previously determined hours».

Did Jesus need these lengthy hours of lonely prayer, when everybody else was asleep? Theologians study the psychology of Jesus man: up to which point had He direct access to divinity and up to which point was He «one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin» (He 4:15). To the point we consider him closer to us, his praying “practice”, must be evidently a clear example for us.

Once we have well established our praying, it only remains for us to imitate him in action. In today's fragment, we can see him “organizing the Church”, that is, choosing those who were to be his future evangelists, the followers of his mission on earth: «When day came, He called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom He called apostles» (Lk 6:13). We find him, later on, healing all type of sicknesses. «Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all» (Lk 6:19), the Evangelist says. So that our identification with him may be complete, we only need that this power to heal everybody may also come forth from us. This will only be possible if we remain in him so that we can bear plenty of fruit (cf. Jn 15:4).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 6,12-19):

+ Abbé Albert TAULÉ i Viñas

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 13,22-30):

Jesus went through towns and villages teaching and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, «Lord, is it true that few people will be saved?». And Jesus answered, «Do your best to enter by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you will stand outside; then you will knock at the door calling: ‘Lord, open to us’. But he will say to you: ‘I do not know where you come from’. Then you will say: ‘We ate and drank with you and you taught in our streets!’. But he will reply: ‘I don't know where you come from. Away from me all you workers of evil’. You will weep and grind your teeth when you see Abraham and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves left outside. Others will sit at table in the kingdom of God, people coming from east and west, from north and south. Some who are among the last will be the first, and others who were first will be last!».

The Application

How can we make amends and recognise the hour of the Lord? Jesus' answer is very simple, "Strive to enter by the narrow gate. Since Jesus Himself is the Door, how can we ignore His teachings? It seems to me that Paul in the first reading helps us to understand a truth that many of us ignore.

He tells us that God has already chosen us in baptism and trusted us a mission, particularly to love others, as He has loved us. It is in this trust that He calls us. So we must keep our eyes and ears open so that we hear His call and look at the ways the Lord offers us. There we will discover that God has not only called us, but also consecrated us to be sent.

If we are aware of this call which is very personal between you and your God and this consecration in all its goodness and divine generosity, we will remain faithful to the baptismal vocation, and this fidelity to the Lord, (for me) it is already the narrow door, of which Jesus speaks to us in today's Gospel. Since God sent His only Son, not to judge us, but through Him, that the world might be saved, St. John tells us in his Gospel, I believe that God will always leave this door open to all those who truly desire to enter it and who commit themselves positively to the fulfilment of the divine will.

Action of the day: Be faithful to the mission.

«Do your best to enter by the narrow door»

Fr. Lluís RAVENTÓS i Artés

(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus stops for a moment and someone takes advantage of it to ask him: «Lord, is it true that few people will be saved?» (Lk 13:23). It seems that, by listening to Jesus' words, the man has become exceedingly worried. It goes without saying that his doctrine is marvelous and appealing; but it entails some demands, which are not so attractive any more. But, should this man live the Gospel according to his own liking, with a “customized moral”, which would his salvation probabilities be?

Ask, therefore: «Lord, is it true that few people will be saved?». Jesus does not accept this approach. Our salvation is too serious a subject to overcome it with a calculation of probabilities. «The Lord does not wishes that any should perish but that all should come to repentance» (2Pet 3:9).

Jesus replies: «Do your best to enter by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you will stand outside; then you will knock at the door calling: ‘Lord, open to us’. But he will say to you: ‘I do not know where you come from’» (Lk 13:24-25). How can these sheep belong to his own flock if they do not even follow the Good Shepherd, nor do they abide by the Magistery of the Church? «Away from me all you workers of evil. You will weep and grind your teeth when you see Abraham and Jacob (…), and you yourselves left outside» (Lk 13:27-28).

Neither Jesus nor the Church are afraid of tarnishing our God Father's image when they reveal the mystery of hell. As the Catechism of the Church asserts, «The affirmations of Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church on the subject of hell are a call to the responsibility incumbent upon man to make use of his freedom in view of his eternal destiny. They are at the same time an urgent call to conversion» (n. 1036).

Let's stop “being too clever by half” and to make so many calculations. Let's hurry up to enter by the narrow gate, restarting as many times as needed, and trusting in His mercy. St. Josemaria says «All that which worries you for the moment, is of relative importance. What is of absolute importance is that you be happy, that you be saved».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 13,22-30):

Abbé Lluís RAVENTÓS i Artés

(Tarragona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 13,18-21):

Jesus continued speaking, «What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? Imagine a person who has taken a mustard seed and planted it in the garden. The seed has grown and become like a small tree, so that the birds of the air shelter in its branches». And Jesus said again, «What is the kingdom of God like? Imagine a woman who has taken yeast and hidden it in three measures of flour until it is all leavened».

«What is the kingdom of God like?»

+ Fr. Francisco Lucas MATEO Seco

Today, the liturgical texts, through these two parables, place before our eyes one of the characteristics of the Kingdom of God: it is something that flourishes slowly —as a mustard seed— but, eventually, grows to offer shelter to the birds in its trees. Tertulian said it like this: «We come from yesterday and we fill everything». With this parable, Our Lord encourages us to patience, fortitude and hope. These virtues are especially necessary for those who devote themselves to propagate the Kingdom of God. We must be patient, and with God's grace and human cooperation, wait for the planted seed to grow while profoundly embedding its roots in the good soil to gradually become a tree. In the first place, we need to have faith in the virtuality —fecundity— contained in the seed of the Kingdom of God. This seed is the Word; it is also the Eucharist that is planted in us through Communion. Our Lord Jesus Christ compared himself to «a kernel of wheat that falls to the ground and dies (…). But if it dies, it produces many seeds» (Jn 12:24).

The Kingdom of God, our Lord goes on, is similar to «the yeast a woman has taken and hidden in three measures of flour until it is all leavened» (Lk 13:21). Here also the yeast capacity to leaven all the dough is mentioned. This is what happens with “the rest of Israel” which the Old Testament mentions: the rest will have to save and leaven all the people. Continuing on with the parable, we only need the yeast inside the dough, getting to the people, to be like salt that preserves from corruption and makes all food to taste (cf. Mt 5:13). Time is also of essence so that it can carry out with its function by and by.

Parables encouraging patience and the hopeful certainty; parables referring to the Kingdom of God and to the Church, and that are also applied to the growth of this same Kingdom in each of us.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 13,18-21):

Gospel text

(Lk 13,10-17):

Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath and a crippled woman was there. An evil spirit had kept her bent for eighteen years so that she could not straighten up at all. On seeing her, Jesus called her and said, «Woman, you are freed from your infirmity». Then He laid his hands upon her and immediately she was made straight and praised God.

But the ruler of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had performed this healing on the Sabbath day and he said to the people, «There are six days in which to work; come on those days to be healed and not on the Sabbath». But the Lord replied, «You hypocrites! Everyone of you unties his ox or his donkey on the Sabbath and leads it out of the barn to give it water. And here you have a daughter of Abraham whom Satan had bound for eighteen years. Should she not be freed from her bonds on the Sabbath?». When Jesus said this, all his opponents felt ashamed. But the people rejoiced at the many wonders that happened through him.

The Application

I wish to invite you all to imitate the way Jesus look at people and the way people look at events. Can you do an examination of conscience the way you look at people and events?

It’s always God who takes the initiative. All that is expected from us is to listen and respond. Do you realise this call in your personal life?

Doing good and well is not enough. It’s important that do the will of the Father. It’s here that we differ from others.

Once listened and obeyed, there is always a joy. However, it’s not for the joy and peace that we work, because joy is a mean and the way to know God and reach Him, not a fin.

Action of the day: Check the way you look at events.

«But the ruler of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had performed this healing on the Sabbath day...»

Today, we can see how Jesus carries out an action that loudly proclaims his interpretation of messianic fulfillment. And how, in front of it, the ruler of the synagogue gets outraged and scolds people for coming to be healed on a Saturday: «There are six days in which to work; come on those days to be healed and not on the Sabbath» (Lk 13:14).

I would like to center this commentary upon this character's attitude. I have always been surprised at how, before an evident miracle, there is always someone who is able to close his eyes in such a way that he remains totally unconcerned. Had he not seen what happened or what it means, it would be the same. The reason being, though, that many Jews in those days had a wrong experience of intermediations. For different reasons —anthropological, cultural, divine designs— it is unavoidable that between God and man some intermediations must exist. The problem is that, some Jews made of this intermediation something absolute. With the end result that the intermediation did not bring them into communication with God but, rather, they remained stuck in the very intermediation. They forgot the final true meaning and stayed put, instead, in the intent. And, thus, God cannot pass on to them neither his grace, nor his gifts and love, their religious experience not enriching, then, their life.

All this took them to live a rigorous religious experience, shutting down their god within strict limits. They manufactured a custom-made god, which they did not let into their lives. In their religiosity they believed all was well provided the stayed within certain rules. We can, thus, understand Jesus' reaction: «You hypocrites! Everyone of you unties his ox or his donkey on the Sabbath and leads it out of the barn to give it water?» (Lk 13:15). Jesus uncovers the absurdity of this wrong experience of the Sabbath.

God's words should help us to examine our own religious experience and to find out whether the intermediations we use actually bring us into communication with God and with life. St. Augustine's phrase, «Love and do what you will», can only be understood as the correct experience of intermediations.
