Gospel text

(Lk 24:35-48):

The disciples of Jesus recounted what had taken place along the way, and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them.

He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”

The Application

It takes time to get adjusted to a new situation or to a new philosophy. God understands our difficulty and accompanies us in our own way. He gives us time and space to digest all that we have accumulated in our life span of time. He understand that the disciples of the Lord suffer greatly from the absence of their Master. The events were so brutal that they could not understand or digest them. The Lord's appearances, his explanation of the sacred Scriptures, his participation in their daily lives, even after the resurrection, were not enough and  they could not understand the resurrection. Since they did not have a serenity in their interiority, even the peace that God offers could not work any miracle. However, there is an immense joy that overshadowed, in this troubled moment.

Jesus understands our difficulty and everything that slows us down towards understanding the divine mysteries. He will be there, and he will walk with us. At this time of such turmoil, we must listen to the Lord, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, make him part of our daily lives, and invite him to the table. We must have patience, remain together and I assure you that the story will end in joy.

Action of the day: Trust the Lord and have patience.

“Peace be with you.”

Fr. Joan Carles MONTSERRAT i Pulido

(Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the risen Christ meets again his disciples with his desire of peace: “Peace be with you.” This is how He makes disappear the fears and forebodings the Apostles had accumulated during their days of Passion and loneliness.

He is not a ghost but totally real; at times, however, fright in our lives is taking shape as if it were the only reality possible. At times also, it is our lack of faith and of interior life which is changing things: fright becomes reality and Christ gradually vanishes from our life. The presence of Christ in our Christian life, instead, lightens up our existence, especially in those places no human explanation may account for. Saint Gregory of Nazianzus urged us: “We should be ashamed to dispense with the salutation of peace; salutation the Lord left with us when He was going to leave this world. Peace is a name and a substantial thing emanating from God, as the Apostle Paul said to the Philippians: ‘The peace of God’; and that it is from God is also shown when he tells the Ephesians: ‘He is our peace’.”

It is the resurrection of Christ which gives a meaning to all our difficulties and sufferings, which helps us to recover our peace of mind and calm us down in the darkness of our life. All other small lights we may find in our life are only meaningful under this Light.

In the Gospel we read: "Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled”: and again we read “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures”, as He had already done with the disciples at Emmaus. The Lord also wants us to understand the meaning of the Scriptures for our life; He wants our poor heart to become a flaming heart, like his: with the explanation of the Scriptures and the chunk of bread, the Holy Eucharist. In other words: the Christian task is to see how He makes his story become a story of salvation.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 24,35-48):

Abbé Joan Carles MONTSERRAT i Pulido

Gospel text

(Lk 24:13-35):

That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.

He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.

As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”

So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Application

A totally unexpected encounter, yet it ends wonderfully. This encounter is offered to all of us, as God comes to meet us on our paths, without giving us any further information.

So many years of journey, with its ups and downs, filled with joy, happiness and sadness, we run from Jerusalem to Emmaus, looking for our places of safety, very often accusing the other, as the only stranger, who has ignored the events of the day.

Let us look at this event differently. The stranger is welcomed with an open heart, lending him his ears, opening the door, inviting him to the table. In truth, it was He who welcomed them, listened to their worries and sadness, accompanied their whole life, proposing a new encounter, opening the secrets of the sacred scriptures to them, finally making them participate in the breaking of the bread.

What a joy to come to this time of emptiness and desolation. Very often our voids are filled by God's grace and our desolations are transformed into a moment of joy. To live it, we must invite the other, leave the door open, make the other participate in our intimate life.  There, we will say like those disciples of Emmaus, "Were not our hearts burning within us as he spoke to us on the road and made us understand the Scriptures?"

Action of the day: Be open and welcoming.

“Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”

Fr. Luis PERALTA Hidalgo SDB

(Lisboa, Portugal)

Today we are reassured by the Gospel that Jesus is alive and continues to be the center around which the disciples' community is built. The gathering of the community, the dialog with brothers and sisters who share the same faith, the reading of the Word of God, the love shared and expressed through fraternity and service, is precisely the ecclesial context in which the disciples can encounter the Resurrected.

The disciples filled with grief, couldn't even imagine that that stranger was in fact their Master, now resurrected. But they felt “an ardent yearning” in their hearts (cf. Lk 24:32), when He talked, "explaining" the Scriptures. The light of the Word softened their hearts and “their eyes were opened” (Lk 24:31).

The story of the disciples of Emmaus is useful as a guide to us in the long journey through a path of doubts, afflictions and sometimes even bitter disillusionments; the Divine traveler continues to be our companion who introduces us, by explaining the Scriptures, to the comprehension of God's mysteries. Upon the fulfillment of this encounter the light of the Word is followed by the light that emerges from the “Bread of Life”, through which Christ fulfills perfectly His promise that He would be with us “always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20).

The Holy Father Benedict XVI explains that “The proclamation of the Lord's Resurrection lightens up the dark regions of the world in which we live.”

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 24,13-35):

Gospel text

(Jn 20:11-18):

Mary Magdalene stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the Body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She thought it was the gardener and said to him, “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,” which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and then reported what he had told her.

The Application

Just like Mary, we all  would like to live again the same life which once we lived in the past, recalling our wonderful souvenirs. Mary had enjoyed it and she will call him, 'Rabboni, to re-establish the old relationship. When she was called, ‘Mary’, she rather recalled her past.

Then the Lord invites her to discover not her Master, but her Savior. A new beginning, a new adventurous life is proposed to her.  Even if she has not fully understood the message, she will certainly announce the Good News, thus becoming the Apostle of the Apostles. We need not understand every part of life. A simple obedience to the divine will, is what expected from us. In this time, we are invited with Mary, not only to discover the Risen Christ, but also become missionaries of the Resurrection, the true witnesses of the divine works.

Action of the day: Be a witness of the Joy of the gospel.

“Mary went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’”

+ Fr. Antoni ORIOL i Tataret

(Vic, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, in the figure of Mary Magdalene we may contemplate two levels of acceptance of our Savior: the first one, imperfect; complete, the second one. According to the first one, Mary appears as the most sincere of Jesus' disciples. She follows him, unmatched Master; heroically, she sticks to Jesus, crucified because of his love; she looks for him, beyond death, buried and missing. How full of admirable and humble submission to her “Lord” are her two exclamations that, as two unique pearls, the evangelist John has kept for us: “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” (Jn 20:13); “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.” (Jn 20:15). History has seen few disciples as loyal and full of affection as Mary Magdalene.

Notwithstanding, the good news of this Tuesday, octave of Easter, far exceeds all ethical uprightness and religious faith in an admirable Jesus, but in the last instance, death, to take us to an ambience of faith in Jesus Christ Resurrected. A Jesus Christ that, in the first moment, taking her from the level of imperfect faith, asks Mary Magdalene: “Woman, why are you weeping?” (Jn 20:15) To which, with myopic eyes, she replies to as a farmer only interested in her own anxiety would; a Jesus, now, that in a second and definitive moment, calls her by her name: “Mary”! to move and shake her up with resurrection and life, that is, with Himself, Resurrected and Alive Forever. Outcome? Mary Magdalene believer and Mary Magdalene, apostle: “Mary went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’” (Jn 20:18).

It is not infrequent today to find many Christians that cannot clearly see what will come after this life and who, therefore, have doubts about Jesus' resurrection. Am I among them? On the other hand, there are too those Christians who have enough faith to follow Jesus privately, but who are afraid of apostolically proclaiming it. Do I belong to these ones? If this were the case, let us tell him, as Mary Magdalene did: “Master!”, let us cling to his feet and let us go to our brothers and tell them: —The Lord has risen and I have seen him!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 20,11-18):

+ Abbé Antoni ORIOL i Tataret

(Vic, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 28:8-15):

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce the news to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had happened. The chief priests assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.’ And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has circulated among the Jews to the present day.

“Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce the news to his disciples”

Fr. Joan COSTA i Bou

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the joy of resurrection has made brave messengers out of those women that went to Christ's tomb. The angel's announcement of the Master's resurrection filled their hearts with “great joy.” And, immediately after, they “ran out”, to tell the news to the Apostles. They simply could not stand idle, their hearts bursting should they not let the disciples know about the great news. Paul's words resound in our souls: “For the love of Christ impels us” (2Cor 5:14).

Jesus contrives to a “chance meeting” with Mary of Magdala and the other Mary —this is how Christ rewards their courage to look for him early in the morning—, and He does it too with all men and women of this world. Not only, because of his Incarnation, He has, in a certain way, become a man too.

Women's reactions before the Lord express the deepest attitudes of human beings before He who is our Creator and Redeemer: submission —“embraced his feet” (Mt 28:9)— and worship. What a lesson for all of us regarding what our attitude ought to be always before Christ in the Eucharist!

“Do not be afraid” (Mt 28:10), Jesus tells the pious women. Afraid of our Lord? Never, as He is the Love of loves! Afraid to lose him? Yes, because we are well aware of our feebleness. This is why we embrace his feet so strongly. As the Apostles in the stormy sea and as the disciples of Emmaus when they beg him: Lord, do not leave us!

And the Master sends the women to his disciples so they can see him too. This is also our task, and our divine mission, since the day of our baptism: to proclaim Christ all over the World “so that everybody may find Christ, so that Christ may join each one of us in our journey through life, with the power of the truth (...) contained in the mystery of Incarnation and Redemption, with the power of the love He irradiates” (Saint John Paul II).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 28,8-15):

Abbé Joan COSTA i Bou

(Barcelona, Espagne)

It all starts again, on the first day of the week, at dawn, in front of an open tomb, are the women carrying the perfumed spices, prepared for a person they have loved. They are not there for an exceptional encounter, simply for love, to fulfil their duty of friendship. Like the world outside, in the midst of sadness and incomprehension about the choice of the religious leaders,   murdering an Innocent, they walk towards the tomb in their own darkness. In the empty tomb, they discovered men, and the faces of these men were like the sun, and they bowed before this light, unable to recognise or identify these men of God, the angels of the Lord.

As they let their emotions and feelings for the one they loved so much lead them out for the first time in days, from their inner darkness of their sadness, they hear an astonishing word, never heard before in history: "Why do you seek the Living One among the dead? He is not here, he has risen.

It is love for us that God sent Jesus among us. It was out of love for the Lord that these women came to the tomb and again, it was out of love that John believed. Love is capable of transforming everything, of transforming the crossroads towards convergence. It is love for the Lord that we have welcomed our differences and that we form one community. If we have gathered here, it is for the Lord and to express how much we love the Lord. Our differences do not separate us, they are our pride.

In baptism we are immersed in this immense love and we are reborn in this baptismal water, not as human beings, but as divine beings, because from now on the world will call us Christians. For us Christians, the Lord's death is a sign of hope, because baptism makes us participate not only in the Lord's death, but also, through his death, in his resurrection.

On this day of Easter, we are invited to imitate the same gestures found in today's Gospel. I would like to sign the three important gestures. First of all, the visit of the women. It reminds us of our human, social and family duty, especially towards my wife, my husband, (if married) towards our children, without forgetting our parents, our brothers and sisters. May our movements towards them, not be made out of compulsion, complicity or obligation, but out of love. Since the women of today's Gospel have already tasted the love of the Lord, their actions are a response to this love received unconditionally. May our commitments to our brothers and sisters be a response to the love we have received from the Lord.

The second is, their discovery of the empty tomb.  With the disciples of the Lord, they know Jesus as a man, as a teacher, as a great prophet and as the envoy of the Father, not of Christ, the Saviour.  In this emptiness, they are called to discover the Risen One who is something else, beyond our imagination. For this, the women are directed towards their own interiority, reminding them of all that Jesus has already taught them. God has already placed in our hearts that intelligence which helps us to walk on an unknown path, very often less travelled and unnoticed. We look for our God on the outside, and in truth he dwells within us. A proximity is created and a communion is established, so that man in his humanity becomes divine.

The third gesture is the realisation that they have a mission to fulfil with the apostles. We are all called to be missionaries, messengers of the love and forgiveness we have received from the Lord. Even if it is the Apostles whom the Lord has personally chosen from his disciples, whom he has raised up as his Apostles, they will receive the Good News of the resurrection from women, the outcasts of society. We are not great, we are not worthy, but God has chosen us as his messengers. The grace we have received does not depend on our merits. We must always recognise that in the life of the Lord's Church, it is prayer that has been the actor of history. Let us unite in prayer and let our actions be filled with love and mercy, as a response to the loving Father, who has given us His son, Amen.
