Evangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 21, 29-33)

The message

Gospel text (Lc 21,29-33):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Look at the fig tree and all the trees. As soon as their buds sprout, you know that summer is already near. In the same way, as soon as you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all this has happened: heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away».

The message

It is not true to say that the Kingdom of God is not with us. God has given us the wisdom and the capacity to discern of all that are happening around us and in us. It is in this wisdom that discernment that we will discover this Kingdom in us and the proximity of God’s presence in this world.

Let us listen to all that Jesus is telling us, because all that He is telling us will come one day true.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 21, 20-28)

Gospel text (Lc 21,20-28):

Jesus said to his disciples, «When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you must know that the time has come when it will be reduced to a wasteland. Then, if you are in Judea, flee to the mountains; if you are in the city, leave it; and let those who are in the fields not return to the city. For these will be the days of its punishment and all that was announced in the Scripture will be fulfilled.

»How hard will it be for pregnant women and for mothers with babies at the breast! For a great calamity will come upon the land, and divine justice upon this people. They will be put to death by the sword or taken as slaves to other nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled upon by the pagans until the time of the pagans is fulfilled. Then there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth anguish of perplexed nations when they hear the roaring of the sea and its waves. People will faint with fear at the mere thought of what is to come upon the world, for the forces of the universe will be shaken. And at this time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. The signs of the times Now, when you see the first events, stand erect and lift up your heads, for your deliverance is drawing near».

The message

The day of fear and frightening events have already the affaire of our day. Violence and natural catastrophe have already started to create hopelessness in the heart of the humanity. On this day, Jesus is speaking of the final coming, a solemn coming.

How shall we prepare for this day? It is by abandoning all that we don’t need to love and forgive one other. Learning to cling on what is essential in our life and leave off unnecessary attachments.

It is equally important that we may remain vigilant and see the signs that the Lord gives us today. Since we have already entered in this troubled time, let us allow the Holy Spirit to guide us and get His counsel to all that we wish to accomplish in this world. Let us not forget to comfort one other that we may remain always united, as children of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 21, 12-19)

In English

Gospel text (Lc 21,12-19):

Jesus said to his disciples, «People will lay their hands on you and persecute you; you will be delivered to the Jewish courts and put in prison, and for my sake you will be brought before kings and governors. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. So keep this in mind: do not worry in advance about what to answer, for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, by relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish. Through perseverance you will possess your own selves».

The message

The message of today’s gospel is very clear: God will never come to remove our huddles in life or transform our sufferings in to joy. All that He is assuring is that He understands our pains and He suffers with us in our suffering. What is very important in this assurance is, His accompaniment, His protection and His presence in our life. “But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish”

Many of our sufferings are caused by manmade expectations and regulations, without excluding the external and real pains caused by others. Many of us measure our life with what we have received and what we haven’t received. We fail however to look in to our life and measure, how much of what we have, in truth, being put in good use for the self and for the society. We fail to see all that we have. It is in this discovery of all that we have (all that God has already given to us) that our Christian Faith gets deeper and strong. It is in this visible signs that we can discover the invisible presence of God in our lives and our perseverance will surly give us the hope and assure to us the life promised by the Lord.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 21, 5-11)

In English

Gospel text (Lc 21,5-11):

While some people were talking about the Temple, remarking that it was adorned with fine stonework and rich gifts, Jesus said to them, «The days will come when there shall not be left one stone upon another of all that you now admire; all will be torn down».

And they asked him, «Master, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?». Jesus then said, «Take care not to be deceived, for many will come claiming my title and saying: ‘I am he, the Messiah; the time is at hand’. Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and troubled times, don't be frightened; for all this must happen first, even though the end is not so soon». And Jesus said, «Nations will fight each other and kingdom will oppose kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and plagues; in many places strange and terrifying signs from heaven will be seen».

The message

The last day of life, does provoke a fear, a deep fear in us. We wish to prepare ourselves to meet the Lord. In our simplicity we ask the Lord, “when this will be”. Strangely the Lord assures us that there will be plenty of time, sufficient time for the conversion, if we desire so and natural signs in this world.

What is essential in this gospel is, the confidence that the Lord creates in the heart of His disciples. He seems to tell us, for the children of God, we need not worry about the last day, because we are called to live in God and for God. It is in living this radical life in Christ, like the branch which attaches to the vine, we shall be prepared to welcome the second coming of the Lord. .

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 21, 1-4)

Gospel text (Lc 21,1-4):

Jesus looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasure box; He also saw a poor widow dropping in two small coins. And he said, «Truly, I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them. For all gave an offering from their plenty, but she, out of her poverty, gave all she had to live on».

The message

To see the invisible through the visible, we need the grace. Jesus helps us to identify such small things and events which happen around us, that we very often forget to identify. There is many such Mother Theresa(s) that we have failed to identify and be inspired by them.

In this last week before advent, let us search for such persons who live next door. It is in identifying and appreciating such people that we will grow in our faith.

If this widow could give everything to God, it is because she believed that with God, she can live without these small coins. She was totally immerged in God, that she valued only God, God alone as something that she desired to hold on. As Saint Paul has said, “it is no more I live, but Christ who lives in me” was in truth her way of living.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 25, 31-46)

» Amen.

Gospel text (Mt 25,31-46):

Jesus said to his disciples, «When the Son of Man comes in his glory with all his angels, He will sit on the throne of his Glory. All the nations will be brought before him, and as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, so will He do with them, placing the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

»The King will say to those on his right: ‘Come, blessed of my Father! Take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. For I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me into your house. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to see me’. Then the good people will ask him: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and give you food; thirsty and give you drink, or a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to see you?’. The King will answer, ‘Truly, I say to you: whenever you did this to these little ones who are my brothers and sisters, you did it to me’.

»Then he will say to those on his left: ‘Go, cursed people, out of my sight into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels! For I was hungry and you did not give me anything to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink; I was a stranger and you did not welcome me into your house; I was naked and you did not clothe me; I was sick and in prison and you did not visit me’. They, too, will ask: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, naked or a stranger, sick or in prison, and did not help you?’. The King will answer them: ‘Truly, I say to you: whatever you did not do for one of these little ones, you did not do for me’. And these will go into eternal punishment, but the just to eternal life».

Homily

With the universal Church we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, a totally different king, by his cross and resurrection fulfilled the will of the Father. Since we are associated with this royal function, powers and civil authority, in Jesus Christ we see a contradiction, a huge contradiction, no political power or civil or social, but a different and mysterious authority divine authority.

Since we are children of God, members of his Kingdom, by our own nature as heirs of his kingdom, the gospel prescribes the required qualities from the members of this kingdom, a kingdom of God, where Jesus is the King.

In the first reading, God present among us, as a shepherd, a shepherd who seeks his sheep, the sheep scattered. If we are separated or confused, hopeless, discouraged, He will come in search of us. The prophet Ezekiel tells us that the Lord watches over us. That is the main role of a king, when God chose the first king of Israel.

Let us hear again the first reading, "The lost sheep, I will seek; the lost, I will bring. That which was broken, I will care. That which is weak, I will give her strength. One that is fat and strong, I will keep it, I will feed them with justice. And you, my flock, says the Lord God, learn that I will judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats. "

Here is the final and radical judgment with a clear and precise question, which He asked right from the beginning of the creation, 'Where is he your brother Abel? "The gospel does not answer this question? Do we have a positive response, or do we respond by saying, "I do not know, am I my brother's keeper? "

God created man in his image, so we are good and capable with discernment, where we choose our path, the path to the Father, the way to salvation. But when one of human beings suffer, why we do not feel his pain and sorrow. His loneliness, his personal heartbreak, family or social, etc., why these states of life escape from our sight. why their life does not affect our daily lives? Why when a brother is hungry and thirsty, we are unable to share? And we have so many questions.

The answer is simple. This is because we fail to discover the face of Jesus suffering in the faces of men. My friends, do not seek God in heaven, looking up always. Let us search Him in men, especially those who suffer. It is in their daily suffering we can express our divine love. The baptismal vocation requires us to keep the light of Christ, the light of hope and joy on.
On this festive day we can pray, "You who are Light, you who is love, put your Spirit in our darkness of love. As the blind man in front of Jericho, we still pray, Lord let me see You, let me see. "Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 20, 27-40)

Gospel text (Lc 20,27-40):

Some Sadducees arrived. These people claim that there is no resurrection and they asked Jesus this question, «Master, in the Scripture Moses told us: ‘If anyone dies leaving a wife but no children, his brother must take the wife, and the child to be born will be regarded as the child of the deceased man’. Now, there were seven brothers; the first married a wife, but he died without children; and the second and the third took the wife; in fact all seven died leaving no children. Last of all the woman died. On the day of the resurrection, to which of them will the woman be wife? For the seven had her as wife».

And Jesus replied, «Taking husband or wife is proper to people of this world, but for those who are considered worthy of the world to come and of resurrection from the dead, there is no more marriage. Besides, they cannot die for they are like the angels. They too are sons and daughters of God because they are born of the resurrection. Yes, the dead will be raised, and even Moses implied it in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. For He is God of the living and not of the dead, and for him all are alive».

Some teachers of the Law then agreed with Jesus, «Master, you have spoken well». They didn't dare to ask him anything else.

The message

Many of us spend lots of energy in discovering the life after the death, life in heaven. Jesus is telling us that as an ordinary human being, it is not possible for us to understand the status of life in heaven. All that we know is that our life will be a fully liberated life, a life pure, close to God, with a permanent and direct relationship with God.

Dear friends why to spend our energy on something to come? Let us give importance of our present life and search always the will of the Father in our present life. It is by living our life in and by God that we can understand this divine mystery. Let us learn the sense of death and the joy of being with the Father after our life on the earth.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 19, 45-48)

Matthew 12:46-50

While Jesus was speaking to the crowds,
his mother and his brothers appeared outside,
wishing to speak with him.
Someone told him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak with you."
But he said in reply to the one who told him,
"Who is my mother?
Who are my brothers?"
And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,
"Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of my heavenly Fat
her
is my brother, and sister, and mother."

The message

On this day of the feast of the presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we are called to imitate her YES to the demand of God, and her perseverance in her cooperation in the accomplishment of the Word of God, believe the way God accompanies us in our daily lives.

It was not easy for her to understand her Son, the son of God. Still she held her close to Him and meditated the word of God. She was His mother not only in the sense of given birth to Jesus and the mother who does the will of the Father.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 19, 41-44)

Gospel text (Lc 19,41-44):

When Jesus had come in sight of the city, He wept over it and said, ‘If only today you knew the ways of peace! But now your eyes are held from seeing. Yet days will come upon you when your enemies will surround you with barricades and shut you in and press on you from every side. And they will dash you to the ground and your children with you, and leave not a stone within you, for you did not recognize the time and the visitation of your God».

The message

Jesus is crying for the people of Israel. He is sad that this people, the chosen one of God, have failed to see in Jesus the presence of God. They were expecting some powerful and wonder worker to come and save them. If we refuse to see Jesus in little ones, particularly in our brothers and sisters and search only for great things to happen around us, we may behave just like the people of Jerusalem who have rejected Jesus.

Let our life be rooted in Christ, only in Christ, and then with the help of the Holy Spirit, we may be able to identify the presence of God in this world and will be able to help the world to identify this salvific presence amidst them.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 19, 11-28)

Gospel text (Lc 19,11-28):

Jesus was now near Jerusalem and the people with him thought that God's reign was about to appear. So as they were listening to him, Jesus went on to tell them a parable. He said, «A man of noble birth went to a distant place to have himself appointed king of his own people, after which he would return. Before he left, he summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds. He said: ‘Put this money to work until I get back’. But his compatriots who disliked him sent a delegation after him with this message: ‘We do not want this man to be our king’.

»He returned, however, appointed as king. At once he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made. The first came in and reported: ‘Sir, your pound has earned ten more’. The master replied: ‘Well done, my good servant. Since you have proved yourself capable in a small matter, I can trust you to take charge of ten cities’. The second reported: ‘Sir, your pound earned five more pounds’. The master replied: ‘Right, take charge of five cities’. The third came in and said: ‘Sir, here is your money which I hid for safekeeping. I was afraid of you for you are an exacting person; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow’. The master replied: ‘You worthless servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew I was an exacting person, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow! Why, then, did you not put my money on loan so that when I got back I could have collected it with interest?’.

»Then the master said to those standing by: ‘Take from him that pound, and give it to the one with ten pounds’. They objected: ‘But, sir, he already has ten!’. ‘I tell you: everyone who has will be given more; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for my enemies who did not want me to be king, bring them in and execute them right here in my presence’».

So Jesus spoke, and he went on ahead of them, on his way to Jerusalem.

The message

Just last Sunday we had the same parable of Jesus and today there is a new addition of Jesus climbing towards Jerusalem. It is this climbing towards Jerusalem and coming back as king that attracts more importance, because next Sunday we will celebrate Jesus as king.

The master will come back is the message of the day, and the hope is, that leaves behind with us, His wealth. One day He will surely will ask us, ‘where is your brother Abel?’ Many of us look towards heaven for more grace, forgetting all the talents that the Lord has given to us, which needs a multiplication.

As I have shared with you last Sunday, it is this bad servant who pronounces his judgment. If we learn to avoid these kinds of victimization and judgments, then the Lord will gives us in return multiple folds.

All that we are asked to do is to know and identify the gifts we have received and make them in good use of the self and also for others.
