Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 13, 44-46)

Gospel text (Mt 13,44-46):

Jesus said to the crowds, «The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. The one who finds it buries it again; and so happy is he, that he goes and sells everything he has, in order to buy that field.

»Again the kingdom of heaven is like a trader who is looking for fine pearls. Once he has found a pearl of exceptional quality, he goes away, sells everything he has and buys it».

The message

There is a hidden message in this gospel. It is not only on the kingdom of God of which Jesus is addressing directly, but also there is someone who is searching for it eternally. This search and thirst for the Kingdom of God is very important for the spiritual life. Only those who search for it will find it and only they could sell everything they posses which of lesser value for this eternal Joy. If many of us find difficult to leave up our little pleasures, it is because we haven’t started to search for the Kingdom of God, or we haven’t found the treasure. How can we sell all that we have, if we haven’t seen this treasure? Isn’t sensible to our modern thinking…………………………………………?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 13, 36-43)

Gospel text (Mt 13,36-43):

Jesus sent the crowds away and went into the house. And his disciples came to him saying, «Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field». He answered them, «The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed are the people of the Kingdom; the weeds are those who follow the evil one. The enemy who sows them is the devil; the harvest is the end of time and the workers are the angels.

»Just as the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom all that is scandalous and all who do evil. And these will be thrown in the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the just will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, then hear».

The message

We live in a world where the evil doers flourish. We see good and bad at the same time. God is patient and merciful so that the people who do evil may get converted by the love of God. Jesus is reminding us that this God is also a God of justice and judgment.

Let us not wait for the final judgment, rather get repented immediately and start to do good, because our God loves us and in this love he forgives us. If we wait it may be too late. Let us learn to put everything in the hand of God and start to co-operate with Jesus in accomplishing the will of the Father.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 11, 19-27)

Gospel text (Lc 10,38-42):

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, He entered a village and a woman called Martha welcomed him to her house. She had a sister named Mary who sat down at the Lord's feet to listen to his words. Martha, meanwhile, was busy with all the serving and finally she said, «Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving?». But the Lord answered, «Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her».

The message

We are living in a busy world of fast food. We have no time even for ourselves or for our health. Jesus is reminding us once again that we should relook our lives and see our priorities. When we haven’t looked the life in its fullness, we will miss and get disturbed with many things like Martha, and fail drastically to look for the essentials.

What is most required of every Christians is to be with the Lord and listen to the Word of God. This is the first step of a spiritual life. This listening will help us and will give us the energy to put in to practice all that we have heard. No complaints and no regrets. That day we will live our lives fully.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 13, 24-30)

Gospel text (Mt 13,24-30):

Jesus told his disciples another parable, «The kingdom of heaven can be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and left. When the plants sprouted and produced grain, the weeds also appeared. Then the servants of the owner came to him and said: ‘Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? Where did the weeds come from?’. He answered them: ‘This is the work of an enemy’. They asked him: ‘Do you want us to go and pull up the weeds?’. He told them: ‘No, when you pull up the weeds, you might uproot the wheat with them. Let them just grow together until harvest; and at harvest time I will say to the workers: Pull up the weeds first, tie them in bundles and burn them; then gather the wheat into my barn’».

The message

What a joy when we read this Gospel. We thank you Lord for your patience and mercy towards us, who produce bad fruits where you have sowed good seeds.

The lord has given us the full freedom to discern our way path. If we listen to the Word of God and walk on the way proposed by the Gospel, there will be always good fruits. It is our choice to choose either the good seed received from the Lord or produce the bad seed.

We have to recognize the co-existence of good and bad in our society. Our God is not only patient with us, through these realities, God is testing our own patience with His own people who are week and suffering. He wishes that we be a sign of God’s forgiveness to this world and be patient with our weaker brothers and sisters.

Gospel text

(Mt 13,18-23):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Now listen to the parable of the sower. When a person hears the message of the Kingdom but without taking it to himself, the devil comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed that fell along the footpath. The seed that fell on rocky ground stands for the one who hears the word and accepts it at once with joy. But this fickle and has no roots. No sooner is he harassed or persecuted because of the word, than he gives up. The seed that fell among the thistles is the one who hears the word, but then the worries of this life and the love of money choke the word, and it does not bear fruit. As for the seed that fell on good soil it is the one who hears the word and under-stands it; this bears fruit and produces a hundred, or sixty, or thirty times more».

The message

Today Jesus is telling us that the only way to prepare the land is to listen to the Word of God and put them in to practice so that the word of God which we have received may give fruit.

God has given us the intelligence and the wisdom of good discernment. It is through this process of discernment inspired by the Holy Spirit that we can understand the Word of God in our own language. By applying our intelligence and wisdom we should look for the ways and means of implementation of this Word of God in our lives.

God, who is generous and merciful will continue to sow the seed in our hearts and let us learn to understand the message he gives to us daily.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 20, 20-28)

Gospel text (Mt 20,20-28):

The mother of James and John came to Jesus with her sons, and she knelt down to ask a favor. Jesus said to her, «What do you want?». And she answered, «Here you have my two sons. Grant that they may sit, one at your right and one at your left, when you are in your kingdom». Jesus said to the brothers, «You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?». They answered, «We can». Jesus replied, «You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right or at my left is not for me to grant. That will be for those for whom the Father has prepared it».

The other ten heard all this and were angry with the two brothers. Then Jesus called them to him and said, «You know that the rulers of the nations act as tyrants, and the powerful oppress them. It shall not be so among you; whoever wants to be more important in your group shall make himself your servant. And if you want to be first, make yourself the servant of all. Be like the Son of Man who has come, not to be served but to serve and to give his life to redeem many».

The message

Like the mother of James and John we also misunderstand the Word of God. We understand in our won manner and interpret it with authority as if what we say is the truth. Lord in his silence respond to us by calling each one us to be humble while listening the word of God and reminds us that our life and our talents received from as gifts are for the service of his people.

He is asking us to learn from Him, our Master, “Be like the Son of Man who has come, not to be served but to serve and to give his life to redeem many” If the Lord has called us, it is to save the souls of the earth by our witnessing life. Let our life be a sign of God’s presence in the world and let the people be served by the Lord through us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 13, 1-9)

Gospel text (Mt 13,1-9):

Jesus left the house and sat down by the lakeside. As many people gathered around him, He got in a boat. There He sat while the whole crowd stood on the shore, and he spoke to them in parables about many things. Jesus said, «The sower went out to sow and, as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground where there was little soil, and the seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was not deep. But as soon the sun rose the plants were scorched and withered because they had no roots. Again other seeds fell among thistles; and the thistles grew and choked the plants. Still other seeds fell on good soil and produced a crop; some produced a hundredfold, others sixty and others thirty. If you have ears, then hear!».

The message

The Lord continues to sow the seeds of love and forgiveness in to our hearts. His words are filled with energy to live our lives in peace and happiness. All that the Lord wises for us is this eternal joy and peace.

Since in this parable the soil is our hearts, it is up to us to make our own choice of life; either listen and accept this nourishing Words of God or reject it. If we wish to accept it, then let us prepare our heart in such a way that the seed may enter in to our hearts and gets rooted very deep, so that it may give fruits to the world.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 12, 46-50)

Liturgic day: Tuesday 16th in Ordinary Time

Saints July 23th: Bridget, religious

Gospel text (Mt 12,46-50): While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, «Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you». Jesus answered, «Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?». Then He pointed to his disciples and said, «Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother».

The message

Only if we do the will of the Father, we can associate ourselves with Jesus as brothers and sisters. Jesus has said to us and reminded us that the will of the Father is that the world may be saved and let this world recognize the loving Father in Jesus Christ and today let this society discover this love in us, the baptized.

For us the priority should be this divine Love, generally experienced personally and internally, particularly cherished and lived in our daily lives. No one will like to miss this cherished relationship with God. Do we?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 20, 1.11-18)

Liturgic day: July 22nd: Mary Magdalene

Gospel text (Jn 20,1-2.11-18):

Now, on the first day after the Sabbath, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark and she saw that the stone blocking the tomb had been moved away. She ran to Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved. And she said to them, «They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they have laid him».

Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she bent down to look inside; she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, and the other at the feet. They said, «Woman, why are you weeping?». She answered, «Because they have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him». As she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize him. Jesus said to her, «Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?». She thought it was the gardener and answered him, «Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him». Jesus said to her, «Mary». She turned and said to him, «Rabboni» —which means, Master. Jesus said to her, «Do not cling to me; you see I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them: ‘I am ascending to my Father, who is your Father, to my God, who is your God’. So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, «I have seen the Lord, and this is what he said to me».

The message

In a society which looked women lesser than an animal, Jesus have chosen her to be His first witness of the Resurrection. Searching something important while it is still dark may mislead us. In this darkness Mary has misunderstood Jesus as a gardener. The darkness was not only at the exterior part of her, but it was very much an interior reality.

It is strange that she went to look for a dead person while He is alive. It is in this stupidity and darkness that hindered her to see the Risen one.

If our faith is in dark room, even if the Lord comes and stands in frond us, we will not be able to recognize the Lord. Let us deepen our Faith in the Lord and we will see Him everywhere we go.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 10, 38-42)

Homily

Today we have two readings which speak of the same thing. The first reading speaks about Abraham who receives three persons, but he addresses them as a single person (some call this as a representation of Trinity in the Old Testament) and we have in the gospel Martha and Mary receive Jesus in their house.

Both of them receive someone important and there we find the best way to receive them is to sit near to them. Abraham remains near to them and Mary sits very close to the Lord to listen to Him. Sitting close to someone is to express our proximity to this person and our interest to listen to them and be with them. What a joy when we are able to sit very close to someone we love and listen to them?

Abraham runs and he will keeping running throughout his life. He is not the only one who is running, but he makes every household member running so that the invited guests get the food in right time. There is hurry, not for him, but for the other. When the precipitation is oriented towards self oriented goals even though it may be for the other at the end (like Martha in the gospel for Jesus), is dangerous, because all work for this individual who demands and controls, while in reality they all are called to work for the Lord (we see this orientation from the behavior of Abraham).

Life will take a radical change only if we listen to the Lord. Abraham listens to the Lord and the orientation was always good. Martha was absent in this listening and we see the silence in Mary and a disturbance in Martha (she complains).

In today’s gospel we find that Martha is disturbed, disturbed of many things, while Abraham was not disturbed because he knew exactly what he should do. Getting involved in one single activity is better than getting involved with many activities and being disturbed. It is the question of priorities. Once we are able to prioritize the work, we will do the most important first and the rest afterwards. Mary did exactly the same, while Martha failed drastically to prioritize the events. Jesus reminds Martha once again, «Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed”. The Lord is reminding us the same. Let be conscious of this reality in our own lives.
