Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 19, 45-48)

Gospel text (Lc 19,45-48):

Jesus entered the Temple area and began to drive out the merchants. And He said to them, «God says in the Scriptures: ‘My house shall be a house of prayer’: but you have turned it into a den of robbers». Jesus was teaching every day in the Temple. The chief priests and teachers of the Law wanted to kill him and the elders of the Jews as well, but they were unable to do anything, for all the people were listening to him and hanging on his words.

The message

Jesus is asking us to transform all our places of prayer as a house of the where man could go and meet the Father and taste His infinite love. To taste this infinite love, we need an atmosphere of silence and serenity. People, who long to have this divine relationship and enter into a direct dialogue with Father, will appreciate this atmosphere of peace and serenity.

Jesus is warning all those who are manipulating and degrading this sacred place in to a commercial opportunity. Let us give attention to our places of worship and transform them in to a divine meeting place, where human being could enter into a perfect dialogue with the Father.

Second thought

Jesus is the temple of God for us where by His death and resurrection, He has made us worthy to enter in to a perfect dialogue with God.

Jesus cleaning the temple can me translated in to his cleaning of our own hearts, which we have stained with our sins. He is inviting us to discover this presence of God in us, by this purification.

How many of us are ready for this purification and happily accept this wonderful initiative of Jesus?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 19, 11-28)

Gospel text (Lc 19,11-28):

Jesus was now near Jerusalem and the people with him thought that God's reign was about to appear. So as they were listening to him, Jesus went on to tell them a parable. He said, «A man of noble birth went to a distant place to have himself appointed king of his own people, after which he would return. Before he left, he summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds. He said: ‘Put this money to work until I get back’. But his compatriots who disliked him sent a delegation after him with this message: ‘We do not want this man to be our king’.

»He returned, however, appointed as king. At once he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made. The first came in and reported: ‘Sir, your pound has earned ten more’. The master replied: ‘Well done, my good servant. Since you have proved yourself capable in a small matter, I can trust you to take charge of ten cities’. The second reported: ‘Sir, your pound earned five more pounds’. The master replied: ‘Right, take charge of five cities’. The third came in and said: ‘Sir, here is your money which I hid for safekeeping. I was afraid of you for you are an exacting person; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow’. The master replied: ‘You worthless servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew I was an exacting person, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow! Why, then, did you not put my money on loan so that when I got back I could have collected it with interest?’.

»Then the master said to those standing by: ‘Take from him that pound, and give it to the one with ten pounds’. They objected: ‘But, sir, he already has ten!’. ‘I tell you: everyone who has will be given more; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for my enemies who did not want me to be king, bring them in and execute them right here in my presence’».

So Jesus spoke, and he went on ahead of them, on his way to Jerusalem.

The message

It is nice to note the occasion where this parable is placed. Mainly Jesus is on his way towards Jerusalem, the city where He is going offer Himself to the Father. Secondly the noble is inviting his faithful servants to continue his work, till he comes back. Both of them will come back one day and we will be called to give an account.

If you look this parable with this background we will be able to understand the message communicated to us. Servant is given the pounds so that their master’s work may continue. In our spiritual journey, we have to give lots lots of attention, not only using our talents and gifts correctly, but also, whether the work we do is exactly the work of the Lord.

Even though this parable has a frightening message to all those who are against the master, it is inviting us to be a faithful servant of the Lord and respond positively to this call of Jesus to engage ourselves in the mission of the Lord. It is quite encouraging when the Lord says to us that we are faithful and good servants of the Lord.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 19, 1-10)

Gospel text (Lc 19,1-10):

When Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the city, a man named Zaccheus was there. He was a tax collector and a wealthy man. He wanted to see what Jesus was like, but he was a short man and could not see because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed up a sycamore tree. From there he would be able to see Jesus who had to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, ‘Zaccheus, come down quickly for I must stay at your house today’. So Zaccheus hurried down and received him joyfully.

All the people who saw it began to grumble and said, «He has gone to the house of a sinner as a guest». But Zaccheus spoke to Jesus, «The half of my goods, Lord, I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will pay him back four times as much». Looking at him Jesus said, «Salvation has come to this house today, for he is also a true son of Abraham. The Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost».

The message

This riche man, on a sudden realizes that he is poor in front of Jesus. It’s all happened by his curiosity to see Jesus. It is in this curiosity he realizes that he a short man and runs before Jesus. He never misses this wonderful gift offered by Jesus to him, “Zaccheus, come down quickly for I must stay at your house today’ and he stats feasting.

It is the right time for us to make an examination of conscience. Do we take the initiative to run like him to see Jesus? Are we ready to listen this invitation of Jesus to come and dine with Him? How is our experience when we meet the Lord in the Eucharist? Is there a declaration of Faith and does this meeting invites us for a conversion?

Jesus is capable of seeing even a little imitative taken like running before Jesus and climbing up on the tree like this rich man. Jesus continues to look us with the same compassion and love. He is ready to forgive any kind of sins, provided we get converted.

Is there someone to listen and respond positively to this invitation of Jesus?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 18, 35-43)

Gospel text (Lc 18,35-43):

When Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road, begging. As he heard the crowd passing by, he inquired what it was, and they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was going by. Then he cried out, «Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!». The people in front scolded him, «Be quiet!», but he cried out all the more, «Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!». Jesus stopped and ordered the blind man to be brought to him, and when he came near, He asked him, «What do you want me to do for you?». And the man said, «Lord, that I may see!». Jesus said, «Receive your sight, your faith has saved you». At once the blind man was able to see, and he followed Jesus, giving praise to God. And all the people who were there also praised God.

The message

It is strange that the people, all who could see the Lord, couldn’t realize that Jesus is the only man among them, who is able to give light to this blind man. Let us make an examination of conscience and we all will agree that the blind was the only who saw the savior in Jesus Christ and the visibly bright people were in fact blind.

It is interesting to note the courage of the blind man to cry, cry without stop, still the Lord responds to Him. The people, who are called to help the blind man, are the one who were against him, asking to keep silence. In the society we have many such sad incidents and the people who execute such acts are the proud and honored people by the people, the binds in deed.

Let us not fail to look at the behavior of Jesus. He makes a pause with a short stop. In the big crowd which makes loots of noise, the Lord could hear the cry of the blind. We should have confidence in the Lord that He will listen to us and respond to us. Let us have the courage and cry. Before crying, we have to acknowledge our blindness and then our crying will have a sense: Lord, that I may see.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 21, 5-19)

Gospel text (Lc 21,5-19):

While some people were talking about the Temple, remarking that it was adorned with fine stonework and rich gifts, Jesus said to them, «The days will come when there shall not be left one stone upon another of all that you now admire; all will be torn down». And they asked him, «Master, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?».

Jesus then said, «Take care not to be deceived, for many will come claiming my title and saying: ‘I am he, the Messiah; the time is at hand’. Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and troubled times, don't be frightened; for all this must happen first, even though the end is not so soon». And Jesus said, «Nations will fight each other and kingdom will oppose kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and plagues; in many places strange and terrifying signs from heaven will be seen. Before all this happens, people will lay their hands on you and persecute you; you will be delivered to the Jewish courts and put in prison, and for my sake you will be brought before kings and governors. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. So keep this in mind: do not worry in advance about what to answer, for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, by relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish. Through perseverance you will possess your own selves».

Homily

We are getting closer to the end of the liturgical year and today the Church offers us the readings which are inviting us to work without being discouraged and being assisted by the Lord, during a troubled time. The Lord is our Father and He will save us. If we are helpless and discouraged, let us surrender our lives fully in the Lord and He will take care of us. If St. Paul invites some members of the community to work, it is not only an invitation for a manual labor, but also with the eschatological hope because he urges people to wait for the Lord's day.

Particularly in the last week we had several readings on the day of the Son of man and his unpredictable and sudden arrival. Jesus was explaining to the people through the Pharisees and saduciens about the resurrection and about the Kingdom of God.

Whenever I read the message on the day of the Lord , I sense an inner happiness because that day I will be able to see the Lord face to face . For all those who live their lives in the Lord, that day will be a day of celebration. We would like to be associated with this celestial group today, but our weaknesses and our human behavior prevents us from moving forward. This is why the Lord calls us to transform our human life to divine life .

Everything we live and suffer these days like the Typhoon in Philippine, conflicts in the world , violence in our society and the terrorist attacks , etc., remind us the Word of God , which resembles the last day, cosmic upheaval of the end and the beginning of the end .

Although the readings evoke fear, the Lord assures us, saying that we need not be afraid . The Holy Spirit will be with us and He will help us. We should imprint these words of hope in our heart . Today’s readings is a call to trust. Jesus says , "Not a hair of your head will perish . " In the midst of life's trials and difficulties , it's just perseverance and commitment to the faith must take the central place in the Christian life. Given the adversaries, two attitudes are recommended to us: the confidence and consistency . The Gospel of the day tells us that the Lord will bring us his help to those who put all their faith in him and he will give them salvation . "But the Son of man, when he cometh, shall he find faith on earth? "

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 18, 1-8)

Gospel text (Lc 18,1-8):

Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should pray continually and not lose heart. He said, «In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor people. In the same town was a widow who kept coming to him, saying: ‘Defend my rights against my opponent’. For a time he refused, but finally he thought: ‘Even though I neither fear God nor care about people, this widow bothers me so much I will see that she gets justice; then she will stop coming and wearing me out’».

And Jesus explained, «Listen to what the evil judge says. Will God not do justice for his chosen ones who cry to him day and night even if He delays in answering them? I tell you, He will speedily do them justice. Yet, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?».

The message

The prayer is a dialogue between two people who love each other. It is a history of a beautiful love story which we would like to hear again and again and we wish to make it as an essential part of our personal life. Every human relationship is built on this love and our spiritual life is built on this divine love, an unconditional love of God.

The prayer is nourished by the Faith, the faith we have in God. This faith will lose its energy, if it is not build up on the divine love. Jesus worried of human being building their relationship purely on material necessities than transforming it in to a divine love relationship. He is equally worried of this material world which is marching towards a faithless peripheral life, build on the sand. Can we assure Him of our Faith?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 17, 26-35.37)

Gospel text (Lc 17,26-37):

Jesus said to his disciples, «As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be on the day the Son of Man comes. Then people ate and drank; they took husbands and wives. But on the day Noah entered the ark, the flood came and destroyed them all. Just as it was in the days of Lot: people ate and drank, they bought and sold, planted and built. But on the day Lot left Sodom, God made fire and sulfur rain down from heaven which destroyed them all. So will it be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

»On that day, if you are on the rooftop, don't go down into the house to get your belongings, and if you happen to be in the fields, do not turn back. Remember Lot's wife. Whoever tries to save his life will lose himself, but whoever gives his life will be born again. I tell you, though two men are sharing the same bed, it may be that one will be taken and the other left. Though two women are grinding corn together, one may be taken and the other left». Then they asked Jesus, «Where will this take place, Lord?». And he answered, «Where the body is, there too will the vultures gather».

The message

There is something visible and there is something invisible in life. The wisdom and the intelligence are there to help us to identify these invisible truths of life through the visible realities. Man gets lost easily and gets distracted very often with the visible and pleasurable things and fails to get further beyond the visible realities of life and fails in consequence in his discernment and decision of invisible truths hidden in him and in the creation.

In his drunkenness, he loses his steady life and allow himself be distracted and get away from the truth, thus instead of finding a merciful Father, he chooses the God of judgment. He fails drastically to use his intelligence and wisdom and refuses and rejects all the good ways directed by them and chooses the way of pleasures and desires which will lead him towards the opposite of the eternal joy and peace. Certainly one day he will regret, that day he will realize that it is too late. Let us get converted and wait for the merciful Father.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 17, 20-25)x

Gospel text (Lc 17,20-25):

The Pharisees asked Jesus when the kingdom of God was to come. He answered, «The kingdom of God is not like something you can observe and say of it: ‘Look, here it is! There it is!’. See, the kingdom of God is among you».

And Jesus said to his disciples, «The time is at hand when you will long to see one of the glorious days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. Then people will tell you: ‘Look there! Look here!’. Do not go, do not follow them. As lightning flashes from one end of the sky to the other, so will it be with the Son of Man. But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this people».

The message

Today Jesus is telling us that as long as He is with us, we can assure ourselves of the presence of the Kingdom of God. Since He has assured us that He will be always with us, we can be sure that we have already a before taste of the Kingdom of God.

All we have to search in our life is this presence of God, which is inspiring us and guiding us in every aspect of life. If we realize this presence of God in our lives and respond positively to His call, we will realize the will of the Father and we will help Him to re-establish His Kingdom on the earth.

Why to spend our precious time in search of the Kingdom of God, while having Jesus Himself in our hearts? Saint Paul has said that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit and the Kingdom has its beginning in us that the final day, Jesus will conclude with the final judgment. Let us not run up and down, rather spend some time to meditate and we will be assured of the Kingdom of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 17, 11-19)

Or, c'était un Samaritain.

Gospel text (Lc 17,11-19):

On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus was passing along the border between Samaria and Galilee, and as He entered a village, ten lepers came to meet him. Keeping their distance, they called to him, «Jesus, Master, have pity on us!». Then Jesus said to them, «Go and show yourselves to the priests». Now, as they went their way, they found they were cured.

One of them, as soon as he saw he was cleansed, turned back praising God in a loud voice, and throwing himself on his face before Jesus, he gave him thanks. This man was a Samaritan. «Was no one found to return and give praise to God but this alien?». And Jesus said to him, «Stand up and go your way; your faith has saved you».

The message

We are all in need of cleansing and we have to cry to Jesus like these ten lepers, who remain outside of the village, calling for mercy. While seeking a self purification, we have to recall all other excluded people of our society, who are crying towards us to inclusion and for insertion. It is here Jesus is wishing us to meet and purify us. We may love to be in the chapel and pray, but Jesus will send us back to the society who is in need of us.

Every Christian should recognize that the life he or she has, is a gift from God and we are called to live our life for the Lord. It is in this love and gratitude of the goodness and generosity of the Lord that we are called to respond and put our energy in service for the poor and needy. Once we realize this generosity in our lives, we will be able to say like Saint Paul that if we live, we live for the Lord and if we die, we die for the Lord.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 17, 7-10)

Gospel text (Lc 17,7-10):

Jesus said to his disciple, «Who among you would say to your servant coming in from the fields after plowing or tending sheep: ‘Come at once and sit down at table?’. No, you tell him: ‘Prepare my dinner. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink; you can eat and drink afterwards’. Do you thank this servant for doing what you commanded? So for you. When you have done all that you have been told to do, you must say: ‘We are no more than servants; we have only done our duty’».

The message

We have to humbly recognize that our life is a gift from the Lord. Thus we are called to live our life for the Lord. Since we have the same life, the Life of God himself, we are called to represent God, not from the emptiness, but from what we have received from Him. In truth, all that we receive is for God and only for Him. How can we become masters of God’s property? Are we not the stewards chosen by the Lord, to protect His people and give our lives for His people? It is in giving that we receive and it is in serving people that we will be served by the Lord.
