Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 7, 11-17)

Gospel text (Lc 7,11-17): Jesus went to a town called Naim and many of his disciples went with him —a great number of people. As He reached the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was the only son of his mother and she was a widow; there followed a large crowd of townspeople. On seeing her, the Lord had pity on her and said, «Don't cry». Then He came up and touched the stretcher and the men who carried it stopped. Jesus then said, «Young man, awake, I tell you». And the dead man got up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. A holy fear came over them all and they praised God saying, «A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people». This news spread out in the Jewish country and the surrounding places.

The message

There are three visible and simple messages in this gospel. The first message is, the presence of mind. Jesus was already surrounded by a big crowd. Even in this crowd He was able to sense the presence of the other group totally sad and disappointed. This presence of mind helped Him to make a little pause in life. Let us learn to make little pause in life like the Good Samaritan and keep our eyes always open to the events around us.

It is Jesus who is taking the initiative. Let us learn from Him to take the initiative and reach-out the people who are in need of us. If we aware that we can do something to others, like the blessed Mary, who reached to Elizabeth, let us move towards the needy.

The third message: glorify the Lord at all time. Be aware of all that we have received and let our life be transformed as the action of grace. Thus we will be contemplative in our relationship with God and active in our relationship with our brothers and sisters.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 19, 25-27)

Gospel text (Lc 2,33-35):

The father of Jesus and his mother wondered at what was said about the child. Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, «See him; He will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel. He shall stand as a sign of contradiction, while a sword will pierce your own soul. Then the secret thoughts of many may be brought to light».

The message

We don’t have many joyful moments of Mary in the gospel. However from the events narrated in the gospels we can easily say that the mother of Jesus was a happy mother. She is such generous lady who accompanied her cousin Elizabeth and today she accompanies her son even to the foot of the Cross. It is here she becomes a model for us to take up our own crosses and follow Jesus. On this day let us remember all the mothers of the world and particularly the mothers who suffer.

Her capacity to meditate on all that she didn’t understand and her patience do inspire us to imitate her in our lives too. She is capable of transforming our sorrows into Joy. Let us surrender all our sorrows and pains to the Lord, through this mother of sorrow.

La fête de la Croix Glorieuse

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 3,13-17.

Gospel text (Mt 18,21-35):

Peter asked Jesus, «Lord, how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister? Seven times?». Jesus answered, «No, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. This story throws light on the kingdom of heaven. A king decided to settle the accounts of his servants. Among the first was one who owed him ten thousand gold ingots. As the man could not repay the debt, the king commanded that he be sold as a slave with his wife, children and all his goods in payment. The official threw himself at the feet of the king and said, ‘Give me time, and I will pay you back everything’. The king took pity on him and not only set him free but even canceled his debt.

»This official then left the king's presence and he met one of his companions who owed him a hundred pieces of silver. He grabbed him by the neck and almost strangled him, shouting, ‘Pay me what you owe!’. His companion threw himself at his feet and asked him, ‘Give me time, and I will pay everything’. The other did not agree, but sent him to prison until he had paid all his debt.

»His companions saw what happened. They were indignant and so they went and reported everything to their lord. Then the lord summoned his official and said, ‘Wicked servant, I forgave you all that you owed when you begged me to do so. Weren't you bound to have pity on your companion as I had pity on you?’. The lord was now angry, so he handed his servant over to be punished, until he had paid his whole debt». Jesus added, «So will my heavenly Father do with you unless each of you sincerely forgive your brother or sister».

Homily

We live in a world of revenge, war, racism, violence and discrimination. Patience, non-violence and dialogue have lost their place in a world of precipitation and fast result. On behalf of the good of the majority and democracy, violence and war are justified. Today's world has sadly given birth to the new form of terrorism and the world is willing to respond in violence. Fear has already invaded and we are looking for solutions.

Like Peter we ask this question to Jesus, "Lord, how often should I forgive him? Given these crimes and violence, how do we forgive? It is enough, and we have no more time and patience. All seem to be in a hurry and emergency.

The first reading invites us to enter into ourselves at the deepest possible. Do not look at your neighbor errors. A look inside of ourselves will lead us to a divine opening. During the opening we will encounter the God who dwells in us. We will realize that we are send by God to announce the good tiding of love and forgiveness.

All people who have had this divine encounter will be able to forgive, because they have already tasted this pardon. They know they will not confine themselves. Forgiveness is a sign of knowledge and acceptation. It is to say to our companion just like a mother who says to her child that I know you and love you. To tell to the other person gently, that you take a distance from the acts committed, but not from the person. The sacrament of reconciliation is a way that allows us to accept us with our weaknesses, limits and to realize that the Father will never distances Himself from us.

Through this sacrament of reconciliation, God is there for us to renew His divine covenant in the grace of baptism, in the origin of our being. We find our place as children of God, our own identity. Beyond weaknesses, God reiterated to us his tenderness, his love and forgiveness. In this sacrament He gives us a new heart and helps us to learn to love again. The risen Christ deposits in us His Spirit that restores us to the divine fellowship. That is why St. Paul tells us, "If we live, we live to the Lord; if we die, we die for the Lord. In our life and in death we belong to the Lord. " Let us live as children of God, let us forgive each other in love as God forgives us. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 6, 43-49)

Gospel text (Lc 6,43-49):

Jesus said to the crowd, «No healthy tree bears bad fruit, no poor tree bears good fruit. And each tree is known by the fruit it bears: you don't gather figs from thorns, or grapes from brambles. Similarly the good person draws good things from the good stored in the heart, and an evil person draws evil things from the evil stored in the heart. For the mouth speaks from the fullness of the heart.

»Why do you call me: ‘Lord! Lord!’ and not do what I say? I will show you what the one who comes to me and listens to my words and acts accordingly, is like. That one is like the builder who dug deep and laid the foundations of his house on rock. The river overflowed and the stream dashed against the house, but could not carry it off because the house had been well built. But the one who listens and does not act, is like a man who built his house on the ground without a foundation. The flood burst against it, and the house fell at once: and what a terrible disaster that was!».

The message

If we are the children of God, we will give good fruit. If our fruits are not good, it is the right time to purify our conscience and our inner self, because our fruits are contaminated and polluted by mere worldly desires.

It is not enough to cry out to God, but we have engage positively to the building of the Kingdom of God on this earth where we live. By our love and forgiveness, we can easily transform this world.

We are easily tempted and taught to avoid the sufferings and floods of life. But in truth they do help us to understand the solidity of our faith, particularly the foundation and the essence of our Christian vocation. Jesus continues to ask us to take up such crosses in our life to have the eternal life. The same Cross which gave us Christ, will promise us the resurrection to all those who are ready to take it up.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 6, 39-42)

In English

Gospel text (Lc 6,39-42):

Jesus offered this example, «Can a blind person lead another blind person? Surely both will fall into a ditch. A disciple is not above the master; but when fully trained, he will be like the master. So why do you pay attention to the speck in your brother's eye while you have a log in your eye and are not conscious of it? How can you say to your neighbor: ‘Friend, let me take this speck out of your eye’, when you can't remove the log in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the log from your own eye and then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your neighbor's eye».

The message

Jesus is asking us whether our life is filled with light of divine love and mercy. He is inviting us to look very deep in to our interior life and if necessary purify it. Only after this purification, we can propose to others as a guide. Jesus is pointing to us that there are many false prophets in our society who declare themselves as masters in words and teaching the moral, but very poor in putting them in practice in their life. Let us learn to take this proposition of the Lord as a personal invitation for conversion.

The second message is very deeper and interesting. Let us not become the masters in this world. It is important to remain always the disciples of the Lord, which will help us to grow deeper in our relationship with the heavenly Father, who is our true master.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 6, 27-38)

Gospel text (Lc 6,27-38):

Jesus said to his disciples, «But I say to you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you and pray for those who treat you badly. To the one who strikes you on the cheek, turn the other cheek; from the one who takes your coat, do not keep back your shirt. Give to the one who asks and if anyone has taken something from you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have others do to you. If you love only those who love you, what kind of graciousness is yours? Even sinners love those who love them. If you do favors to those who are good to you, what kind of graciousness is yours? Even sinners do the same. If you lend only when you expect to receive, what kind of graciousness is yours? For sinners also lend to sinners, expecting to receive something in return. But love your enemies and do good to them, and lend when there is nothing to expect in return. Then will your reward be great and you will be sons and daughters of the Most High. For He is kind towards the ungrateful and the wicked.

»Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Don't be a judge of others and you will not be judged; do not condemn and you will not be condemned; forgive and you will be forgiven; give and it will be given to you, and you will receive in your sack good measure, pressed down, full and running over. For the measure you give will be the measure you receive back».

The message

It is a call to perfection. Since we are children of God, we are called to live a life which resembles the life of God. Our God is not only a God of mercy and forgiveness, but also a God of justice. Happily the justice of the Lord comes with love and compassion.

Even though the demand of the gospel seems to us as if something impossible, Jesus insists to propose to us that this is possible. It is possible to all those who have experienced this divine love and mercy and very importantly to those who desire to respond positively to this call to perfection.

Let our life be rooted in the love of God which finds its expression in the love of our brothers and sisters. It is in this love we will reach to the perfection of holiness that the gospel is proposing to us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 6, 20-26)

Gospel text (Lc 6,20-26):

Lifting up his eyes to his disciples, Jesus said, «Fortunate are you who are poor, the kingdom of God is yours. Fortunate are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Fortunate are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Fortunate are you when people hate you, when they reject you and insult you and number you among criminals, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. Remember that is how the ancestors of this people treated the prophets.

»But alas for you who have wealth, for you have been comforted now. Alas for you who are full, for you will go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Alas for you when people speak well of you, for that is how the ancestors of these people treated the false prophets».

The message

Jesus is asking His disciples to be prepared for the persecutions. It is in Him they will find the joy and the consolation. He is assuring them that He will never abandon them. At the same time, He is not removing the difficulties of today’s life, rather gives them the courage to face them and the hope to look up to the Father for the consolation.

Since we are so used to avoid anything which is painful, and learned to evade at any cost the suffering, these beatitudes may have a counterproductive aspect. Christians are called to take up the cross and follow Jesus. Only to those who are ready to take up their own cross and follow Jesus, these beatitudes will be a guiding force to happiness and joy.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 6, 12-19)

Gospel text (Lc 6,12-19):

Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, He called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom He called apostles: Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

Coming down the hill with them, Jesus stood on a level place. Many of his disciples were there and a large crowd of people who had come from all parts of Judea and Jerusalem and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon. They gathered to hear him and be healed of their diseases; likewise people troubled by evil spirits were healed. The entire crowd tried to touch him because of the power that went out from him and healed them all.

The message

Jesus, who was living in God, decided to spend the whole night in prayer with His Father before choosing His apostles. In Him we discover the importance of prayer and meditation in our daily life. The prayer is a dialogue with the Father. In this dialogue we discover not only His will, His desires, but also how much He loves us and how much He is in need of our cooperation.

It is in this contemplation we become active in mission. The mission of Jesus was always a response to this call of the Father. He felt the need of dialogue with the Father to get assured of His will. If all the Christians do the same way, the world where we live will be a heaven to our brothers and sisters.

Today the mother church celebrates the birth of the mother of Jesus. In her birth we get a wonderful opportunity to discover the marvelous work of our salvation history. Even though right from the beginning we see nothing extraordinary in the birth of Mary, today we can affirm ourselves with much confidence that God was accompanying her in her grow, though in a mystical way.

It is in this heavenly formation that when she received the Good News, she believed that she has already has the Holy Child in her womb. The incarnation of Christ do reminds us the importance of our participation in the accomplishment of the will of the Father.

Are we ready to be formed by the Holy Spirit? Are we ready to listen to the Word of God and put it in practice? Let us imitate the humility and the availability of the Holy Mother.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 15, 21-28)

Gospel text (Mt 15,21-28):

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Now a Canaanite woman came from those borders and began to cry out, «Lord, Son of David, have pity on me! My daughter is tormented by a demon». But Jesus did not answer her, not even a word. So his disciples approached him and said, «Send her away: see how she is shouting after us». Then Jesus said to her, «I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel». But the woman was already kneeling before Jesus and said, «Sir, help me!». Jesus answered, «It is not right to take the bread from the children and throw it to the little dogs». The woman replied, «It is true, Sir, but even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master's table». Then Jesus said, «Woman, how great is your faith! Let it be as you wish». And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Homily

Our God is for everyone. All those who listen to His word and put it into practice will be His people. It is through our acts of charity that others should discover that we are the children of God. Every Christian is called to accept others as they are and welcome them in to our homes with the same honor we reserve for God, because God lives in them.

Yet the response of the Lord of the universe to a Canaanite woman who asks for a favor, does seem rather shocking: "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. "The Lord cites the attitude of a Jewish this time to the Canaanite people, 'like a dog'. The Lord is a man who thinks like an ordinary Jew. What is important for every human being is, not only what he thinks, rather How he acts up on his thinking. Not that everything which gets inside of us that makes us impure, rather what comes out of us.

The dialogue between Jesus and this lady, however, ends with an acknowledgment of her faith in the Lord and a rise in confidence and Jesus presents her as a role model to the people of Israel, "Woman, great is your faith that everything is done for you as you want. "

That is the message of the Lord on this Sunday, 'all who love are children of God, and God abides in them. "This God will never abandon the people who love him. The question now is, do we have that trust in the providence of the Lord as the Canaanite woman?

A foreign woman recognized in the Lord 'the messiah', "son of David" who was able to respond positively to its distress call. She did not stop screaming, like the widow who sought justice to the judge who was not just, like a man who constantly bothered his friend while his friend was already in bed so he can feed his guest, we are called to invoke the Lord without end. Although both men were not ready to respond positively to the call, in the end they responded positively.

We Christians, baptized, which bear the name of Christ, we hear people screaming in the streets, hospitals, the nursing home, the person who is left alone in their house? Do not forget to answer the call because it is a call from the Lord. In this cry, Mother Theresa, Abbé Pierre saw the Lord. In this holiday time, trying to listen to the call of the people, so that our life becomes a life filled by the Lord and it nourish hope in this world.
