Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 6, 7-15)

Gospel text (Mt 6,7-15):

Jesus said to his disciples, «When you pray, do not use a lot of words, as the pagans do, for they hold that the more they say, the more chance they have of being heard. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need, even before you ask him.

»This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom come and your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts just as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us. Do not bring us to the test but deliver us from the evil one’. If you forgive others their wrongs, your Father in heaven will also forgive yours. If you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive you either».

The message

Is there any fun and need in praying if the heavenly Father knows already our needs? If we think that the prayer is like a check book to withdraw money from the bank, then this question is very relevant one. The prayer that Jesus has taught us explains to us the meaning and the need of a prayer. It is moment we acknowledge the providence of God and glorify Him. It is a moment we affirm to God, our engagement in the establishment of the Kingdom of God. It is an emotional encounter with the Lord, where we are alone with the Lord, but fully aware of the need of taking our brothers and sisters, our daily needs and desires and the community as a whole with us as Moses and great prophets represented the people to God. It is an opportune time to express our love for God and His people, by promising God our pardon towards our brothers and sisters, as we ourselves have cherishes it from the Lord. There is no doubt that the supplication is a part of this encounter with the Lord. Since prayer is a personal relationship with the Lord, listening the Word of God and putting it in to practice itself is a form of prayer. Since this Word is a living and life giving one, reading this Word itself will be an occasion to live this Word in our daily life.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 25, 31-46)

Gospel text (Mt 25,31-46): Jesus said to his disciples, «When the Son of Man comes in his glory with all his angels, He will sit on the throne of his Glory. All the nations will be brought before him, and as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, so will He do with them, placing the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. The King will say to those on his right: ‘Come, blessed of my Father! Take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. For I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me into your house. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to see me’. Then the good people will ask him: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and give you food; thirsty and give you drink, or a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to see you?’. The King will answer, ‘Truly, I say to you: whenever you did this to these little ones who are my brothers and sisters, you did it to me’.

»Then he will say to those on his left: ‘Go, cursed people, out of my sight into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels! For I was hungry and you did not give me anything to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink; I was a stranger and you did not welcome me into your house; I was naked and you did not clothe me; I was sick and in prison and you did not visit me’. They, too, will ask: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, naked or a stranger, sick or in prison, and did not help you?’. The King will answer them: ‘Truly, I say to you: whatever you did not do for one of these little ones, you did not do for me’. And these will go into eternal punishment, but the just to eternal life».

The message

There is nothing shocking in this story of last judgment. We will accept without any hesitation that all that we see in this story is correct and just. Still we refuse to take a step further towards our unknown neighbors and sometime we ignore conveniently all those who are in need of us. How sad it would be, if we happen to stand in a wrong group on the final day?

The Lenten season gives us a wonderful opportunity for conversion and reconciliation. It is the right time to change our way of thinking and acting by getting ourselves reconciled with the heart of Jesus filled with love and compassion, who gave His life for our salvation. The charity and reconciliation begin at home with our dear and near ones, by accepting them as they are and tenting a helping hand without even being requested by others.

It is in this openness towards the truth even if it comes with some exigencies, that we will be able to accept God in our brothers and sisters. To some God has blessed them with plenty of opportunities at their door step to serve people, but for others, these opportunities come and disappear as if it is not their concern. Today we are called to make some radical change in our heart, if we wish to avoid the wrong group during the final judgment.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 4, 1-11)

Amen.

Gospel text (Mt 4,1-11): Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert that He be put to the test by the devil. After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry. Then the devil came to him and said, «If you are the Son of God, order these stones to turn into bread». But Jesus answered, «Scripture says: ‘One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’».

Then the devil took Jesus to the holy city, set him on the highest wall of the temple, and said to him, «If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for scripture says, ‘God has given orders to his angels about you. Their hands will hold you up lest you hurt your foot against a stone’». Jesus answered, «But scripture also says: ‘You shall not put to the test the Lord your God’».

Then the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the nations of the world in all their greatness and splendor. And he said, «All this I will give you, if you kneel and worship me». Then Jesus answered, «Be off, Satan! Scripture says: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him alone’». Then the devil left him, and angels came to serve him.

Homily

As the people of Israel entered in to a desert journey by God towards the holy Jerusalem, Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit immediately after his baptism towards the resurrection. After forty days of meditation and contemplation He was hungry. Thus an opportune time for the devil appeared to present himself before Jesus and put Him in to temptation. If we are tempted, it is because are weak and hungry. It is in these weak moments of life that we remain vigilant and keep us always united with the Lord.

I remember when I was little boy in my enthusiasm to become holy, I prayed to the Lord that He sends me a lot of temptation for me that purifies and transforms. Today I beg him intensely in my daily prayer that same prayer Jesus taught us , "Do not let me enter into temptation " and I need you and I cannot live without you. I think my experience is yours and I hope you make the same or the similar prayer .

Mathieu presents the temptations of Jesus and He describes the same story of Jesus in the way He chooses to live his parentage , to exercise its power of the Son, and to extend the Kingdom of God. For us it has not only the three temptations but also three ways to overcome them . The first is a temporal desire that drives us to invest our talents and gifts for the good of the self, the man facing himself. Apparently there is nothing wrong with this investment, and we will do no harm in this engagement, neither for us nor to others. To ensure us that we are on the right path and we do nothing wrong in these human desires the devil uses Scripture skillfully. All that is evil in this investment is our choice of the source of existence and our ignorance of the truth. The devil has manipulated the ignorance of the first couple. When God spoke of death, it was not the death of the body , but the death of freedom , death of a direct relationship with God and a permanent rupture of an intimate relationship with God. Jesus shows us the contemplation of the Word of God to overcome this temporal temptation. Listen to the Word of God regularly and put into practice all that the Lord communicate to you and make this process of life as the norm of everyday life in this time of Lent.

The second temptation is human glory , man against the other , tempted by pride, prestige and vanity. The devil took Jesus to the holy city , Jerusalem, the place at the top of the Temple. He questions the divinity of Jesus , "If You are the Son of God. " We want to protect our identity and we would ensure that we are children of God. That is why we ask the Lord to answer our prayers ,that He gives us signs of his presence. The temptation is putting God in to trouble by forcing Him to do something for our egoistic desires. The means that Jesus gives us overcome this temptation is that we recognize the presence of God in us, and we walk with confidence. It is in this recognition of the presence of God in us that we will be able to discover the visible and invisible signs of God's presence in our daily lives . Thanks to the presence of God and this recognition of His presence in our life we can glorify God through all and in all .

The third temptation is the power of man before God. The devil presents himself as the master of creation and all that is, belongs to Him and he has to power to do all that he desires. Man thinks that money can bring him peace and tranquility that he seeks every day. Civil authorities and even the powers of the world are using violence as a means to establish peace . Materiel goods earthly power seems to replace the spiritual desires as the source of human happiness and joy. They do not have the time and patience. Jesus rejects any world power to choose the humble fidelity to the Father , not of violence, but the dialogue in prayer.

Like Jesus we are constantly invited to choose from. These temptations do embrace us very often and in particularly during the Lenten season. Let us situate ourselves as the children of God, able to commit ourselves totally to our Father.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 5, 27-32)

Gospel text (Lc 5,27-32):

After this Jesus went out, and as He noticed a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax-office, He said to him, «Follow me». So Levi, leaving everything, got up and followed Jesus. Levi gave a great feast for Jesus, and many tax collectors came to his house and took their place at table with the other people. Then the Pharisees and their fellow teachers complained to Jesus' disciples, «How is it that you eat and drink with tax collectors and other sinners?». But Jesus spoke up, «Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do. I have come to call to repentance; I call sinners, not the righteous».

The message

Jesus is asking us to look at the people as His own children and love them. The incarnation is a gift of God’s love. Thus every discrimination and separation in the society is not acceptable to God. Jesus makes an effort to be with such people and assure them of His sympathy and affection.

A good gesture has provoked a disturbance in the heart of these Pharisees. These disturbances are very important for our development. They show us our weakness and failures. Jesus uses this occasion to reveal His mission, , «Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do. I have come to call to repentance; I call sinners, not the righteous» He is asking us to participate in the mission. The reconciliation and conversion have to be lived in our daily lives.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 9, 14-15)

Gospel text (Mt 9,14-15):

The disciples of John came to Jesus with the question, «How is it that we and the Pharisees fast on many occasions, but not your disciples?». Jesus answered them, «How can you expect the wedding guests to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast».

The message

Fasting and prayer take an important place during these seasons of Lent. Today Jesus is qualifying the essence and the base of our fasting. Our fasting is partially recognizing our inability to understand and feel the presence of God and our thirst to as closer as possible to be with the Lord. Our fasting should help us to understand the deep presence of God in our lives and cherish it very dearly.

Let us not forget the fasting that God expects from us. It is nice to quote the first reading here. “Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD?

"Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?”

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 22-25)

Gospel text (Lc 9,22-25):

Jesus said, «The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life». Jesus also said to all the people, «If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me. For if you choose to save your life, you will lose it, and if you choose to lose your life for my sake, you will save it. What does it profit you to gain the whole world while you destroy or damage yourself?».

The message

The Lenten season gives us a wonderful opportunity for conversion and reconciliation. We have chosen the prayer, the fasting and penitence as the means to accompany us in our spiritual endeavor during this season towards Easter.

The very next day Jesus is proposing us the self denial as a means to live today in a meaningful way. The self denial will make a space for Jesus through our others brothers and sisters to enter in us and make our hearts as His divine residence.

It is by abandoning ourselves to the will of the Father in grace and accepting our weakness and limitedness as our daily cross that we can deny ourselves and gain the divine presence as an eternal gift from God. What is wonderful in this self denial is that we are not losing ourselves, but in God we gain our own existence in its pure and original form.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 6,1-6.16-18)

Gospel text (Mt 6,1-6.16-18):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Be careful not to make a show of your righteousness before people. If you do so, you do not gain anything from your Father in heaven. When you give something to the poor, do not have it trumpeted before you, as do those who want to be seen in the synagogues and in the streets in order to be praised by the people. I assure you, they have been already paid in full. If you give something to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your gift remains really secret. Your Father who sees what is kept secret, will reward you.

»When you pray, do not be like those who want to be seen. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues or on street corners to be seen by everyone. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is with you in secret; and your Father who sees what is kept secret will reward you. When you fast, do not put on a miserable face as do the hypocrites. They put on a gloomy face, so people can see they are fasting. I tell you this: they have paid in full already. When you fast, wash your face and make yourself look cheerful, because you are not fasting for appearances or for people, but for your Father who sees beyond appearances. And your Father, who sees what is kept secret will reward you».

The message

Today we are beginning the Lenten season by celebrating the Ash Wednesday. These ashes remind us of the need to burn all the unwanted things accumulated throughout the year. The 40 days remind us of the 40 years of desert life and suffering of the people of Israel. It was the most important time for these people. Let us make use of this time to prepare ourselves to celebrate the Easter in a solemn way so that we may too cherish these days in later life like the people of Israel.

Today’s gospel proposes the prayer, the fasting and the charity as the means for preparing ourselves. This is the time for repentance and reconciliation. Let us take initiative and effort to get reconciled with our brothers and sisters. Let us try to forgive generously.

We can’t create a just society without justice and forgiveness. Let our justice be inspired by divine love and compassion. Love and compassion don’t seek publicity, but they work in secret and discretely, just like the grain works in the night under the belly of the earth. Others will know one day, the day of the Lord.

To my readers I wish you a very good Lenten season and I assure you all my prayers.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 10, 28-31)

Gospel text (Mc 10,28-31): At that time Peter began to tell Jesus, «We have given up everything to follow you». Jesus answered, «Truly, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children, or lands for my sake and for the Gospel, who will not receive his reward. I say to you: even in the midst of persecution he will receive a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and lands in the present time and in the world to come eternal life. Do pay attention: Many who now are first will be last, and the last, first».

The message

After the story of the rich man who returned to his old way of life filled with sadness and discouragement, Peter who has left everything to follow his Master, pose a question born from the heart of his faith and future. Jesus assures him not only recompense spiritual in the Kingdom of God, but a life filled with happiness and joy on the earth.

Jesus is reminding us that our poverty of leaving behind everything to follow Jesus is not on the path of a losing game, but towards a great precious treasure of God the creator in us that we can have in our personal life. Our obedience to the will of father is to have the liberty to follow someone with love and joy. All that the world considers as something worthless and useless in this poverty and obedience, the Christians will find in the source of deeper inner peace and joy that this world can never afford to give us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 10, 17-27)

Gospel text (Mc 10,17-27):

Just as Jesus was setting out on his journey again, a man ran up, knelt before him and asked, «Good Master, what must I do to have eternal life?». Jesus answered, «Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: Do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not cheat, honor your father and mother». The man replied, «I have obeyed all these commandments since my childhood». Then Jesus looked steadily at him and loved him and he said, «For you, one thing is lacking. Go, sell what you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come and follow me». On hearing these words, his face fell and he went away sorrowful for he was a man of great wealth.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, «How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!». The disciples were shocked at these words, but Jesus insisted, «Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God». They were more astonished than ever and wondered, «Who, then, can be saved?». Jesus looked steadily at them and said, «For humans it is impossible, but not for God; all things are possible with God».

The message

It is not enough to have a very good intention, but a sincere engagement and perseverance to go just to the end. This rich man didn’t realize that the eternal life is going to take him fully and transform him in to a totally different person. This transformation is possible only if we empty ourselves and allow God to fill us with His grace.

The love of God disturbs the heart of every individual who desires to have a personal encounter with Him. If we wish not be disturbed, it is better not to go and seek the personal encounter with the Father. If we allow all theses disturbances in our lives, which come from God, we will realize in later days that these bitter pills of life have transformed us and made us possible to carry God to our brothers and sisters.

The eternal life is a total immersion in the divinity of God, and a moment where we see God face to face, without any fear. It is allowing God to take us fully as His own, without losing our personal identity. Is it possible to hold the darkness in front of a powerful light? Can we reasonably fill something without empting it? Jesus is asking us to empty ourselves so that He may fill us. Is there anyone to listen to Him?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 6, 24-34)

Gospel text (Mt 6,24-34):

Jesus said to his disciples, «No one can serve two masters; for he will either hate one and love the other, or he will be loyal to the first and look down on the second. You cannot at the same time serve God and money.

»This is why I tell you not to be worried about food and drink for yourself, or about clothes for your body. Is not life more important than food and is not the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow, they do not harvest and do not store food in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than birds? Can any of you add a day to your life by worrying about it?

»Why are you so worried about your clothes? Look at the flowers in the fields how they grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his wealth was clothed like one of these. If God so clothes the grass in the field which blooms today and is to be burned tomorrow in an oven, how much more will he clothe you? What little faith you have! Do not worry and say: What are we going to eat? What are we going to drink? Or: what shall we wear? The pagans busy themselves with such things; but your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Set your heart first on the kingdom and justice of God and all these things will also be given to you. Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own».

Homily

"Even if she could forget , I will not forget " The Word of God comforts us and consoles us, it gives us hope for the conversion and it calls us to faith and trust . Jesus has two important advises. The first one is not to worry about food or the secondary importance of life and the second is to seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness .

God invites us to live in the present without forgetting the past, but always oriented towards the future, the kingdom which has to come. He accompanies us and walk with us just like our mother, but in His way , in silence and in discretion. He leaves us totally free so that decisions may be ours, and we may take responsibility for our decisions. The day and darkness are before us, the wealth and God. If we seek joy and happiness in our daily lives , we must choose God, His values and justice. We must strive to conform our conduct to the will of God. If we want the temporary pleasures, let us choose money. The light and darkness can’t be together, they can’t coexist.

Jesus reminds us that in this world there's enough for everyone . We need to share and occasionally interact with others. It is in these sharing and exchanges that we are called to invest. Jesus directs us to the essence of life by asking this question, "Life is not worth it more than food and the body more than clothing ? " Since God created us in his image and gave us his wisdom, with a simple application of human wisdom , we are able to discern the essentials life . It is in this confidence that God has created us.

Jesus is not against money. As a son of the family of carpenter, he knew the importance of money. He reminds us all , that money is a good servant but a bad master .

The Lord shows us the birds, flowers and landscapes that are free and happy. The Gospel of the day invites us to freedom, eternal joy. This Gospel reminds us of the famous Lord's Prayer ......... Our Father , give us our daily bread , forgive us , deliver us from evil, etc. . These are the words of absolute confidence . “Set your heart first on the kingdom and justice of God and all these things will also be given to you.”
