Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 18-22)

Gospel text (Lc 9,18-22):

One day when Jesus was praying alone, not far from his disciples, He asked them, «What do people say about me?». And they answered, «Some say that you are John the Baptist; others say that you are Elijah, and still others that you are one of the former prophets risen from the dead». Again Jesus asked them, «Who then do you say I am?». Peter answered, «The Messiah of God». Then Jesus spoke to them, giving them strict orders not to tell this to anyone. And he added, «The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life».

The message

The Christian life is filled with crosses, and through these crosses we will have the resurrection. If we wish to carry these crosses and desire to make it light, then we have to personalize the faith we have received through our baptism. If this faith is not personalized as ‘my faith’, when we are faced with troubles, we will tremble and fail.

Jesus knowing very well the Cross which he has to carry and in later days His disciples have to carry, wishes that their faith be personalized and that his disciples realizes the consequences of this Faith.

Sadly the disciples have lost sight of the cross and the resurrection that the Lord has revealed to them today.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 7-9)

Gospel text (Lc 9,7-9):

King Herod heard of all that Jesus was doing and did not know what to think, for people said, «This is John, raised from the dead». Others believed that Elijah or one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. As for Herod, he said, «I had John beheaded; who is this man about whom I hear such wonders?». And he was anxious to see him.

The message

It’s not enough to say Lord, Lord, without doing anything Jesus is asking us to do. Many our desires to be saint or to live a saintly life remain in the air without seeing the bright day of the truth, because we don’t put our energy in action.

King Herod was anxious to see Jesus, but never took the initiative to go and see him. Even when he got the opportunity to see him and be saved of his sins, he rather mocked Jesus, thus refused the forgiveness offered by Jesus.

Dear brothers, why to wait for tomorrow? Let us be converted right now, go to see Jesus and put in practice all that He will ask us to do.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 1-6)

Gospel text (Lc 9,1-6):

Jesus called his twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to drive out all evil spirits and to heal diseases. And He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He instructed them, «Don't take anything for the journey, neither walking stick, nor bag, nor bread, nor silver coins; and don't even take a spare tunic. Whatever house you enter, remain there until you leave that place. And wherever they don't welcome you, leave the town and shake the dust from your feet: it will be as a testimony against them». So they set out and went through the villages, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

The message

We are all missionaries called to announce the kingdom of God. All the missionaries have to depend totally to the providence of the Lord, because we are called and sent by the Lord.

Let us not forget however that this providence of the Lord comes through our brothers and sisters. It is through them that the Lord accompanies us. He will never abandon us. He will be with us always.

The Lord sends us together as a community to announce the Good News. The community witness with its strengths and weaknesses is very important to announce the kingdom of God. It is in and through this community that others will find the individuals who live together, love and forgive each other. Let our personal life itself becomes a means to announce the Kingdom of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 8, 19-21)

Gospel text (Lc 8,19-21):

The mother and relatives of Jesus came to him, but they could not get to him because of the crowd. Someone told him, «Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and wish to meet you». Then Jesus answered, «My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it».

The message

Who can listen and execute the Word of God in the personal life better than the Mother of God who has said, “Let thy will be done?” Her YES to the angel and her faithfulness to the vocation is a model for us to imitate after Jesus Christ the model par excellence.

Jesus is reminding us that his disciples’ life should be centered in the Word of God and achieve in accomplishing the will of the Father. To listen to the word of God we have to be with Him and in Him. Where are we?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 8, 16-18)

Gospel text (Lc 8,16-18):

Jesus said to his disciples, «No one, after lighting a lamp covers it with a bowl or puts it under the bed; rather he puts it on a lamp-stand so that people coming in may see the light. In the same way, there is nothing hidden that shall not be uncovered; nothing kept secret that shall not be known clearly. Now, take care how well you listen, for whoever produces will be given more, but from those who do not produce, even what they seem to have will be taken away from them».

The message

Jesus is our light and we are the light of the earth. In the present situation, this light can’t afford to remain under the bed. The world is being dominated by the dark elements and only people who are connected to principal light can light up the world.

The light we have received during our baptism has one special character. The more it lights up the world, the more it will remain useful and for a long duration. If we refuse to light up the world, we may risk of losing even what we may have it. It is better to give light than losing our light. Do I speak sense?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 16, 1-13)

Gospel text (Lc 16,1-13):

Jesus told his disciples, «There was a rich man whose steward was reported to him for fraudulent service. He summoned the steward and asked him: ‘What is this I hear about you? I want you to render an account of your service for it is about to be terminated’. The steward thought to himself: ‘What am I to do now? My master will surely dismiss me. I am not strong enough to do hard work, and I am ashamed to beg. I know what I will do: I must make sure that when I am dismissed, there will be some people to welcome me into their house’.

»So he called his master's debtors one by one. He asked the first who came: ‘How much do you owe my master?’. The reply was: ‘A hundred jars of oil’. The steward said: ‘Here is your bill. Sit down quickly and write there fifty’. To the second he put the same question: ‘How much do you owe?’. The answer was: ‘A thousand measures of wheat’. Then he said: ‘Take your bill and write eight hundred’.

»The master commended the dishonest steward for his astuteness. For the people of this world are more astute in dealing with their own kind than are the people of light. And so I tell you: use filthy money to make friends for yourselves, so that when it fails, these people may welcome you into the eternal homes. Whoever can be trusted in little things can also be trusted in great ones; whoever is dishonest in slight matters will also be dishonest in greater ones. So if you have not been trust-worthy in handling filthy money, who could entrust you with true wealth? And if you have not been trustworthy with things which are not really yours, who will give you the wealth which is your own? No servant can serve two masters. Either he does not like the one and is fond of the other, or he regards one highly and the other with contempt. You cannot give yourself both to God and to Money».

Homily

God created the world and He handed over this creation to men so that he could live his life and nourish himself from its fruits. Eventually God wished that men give thanks to God and glorify Him for this creation. Man with his intelligence invented money so that he can share and exchange their goods with each other. The prophet Amos explains to us the extreme abuse of this wealth given by God and the manipulation of the humanity itself. The present situation is the continuation of the past with its added history of worst violence and revenge. The message of the prophet Amos reminds us all to work to build a more just and fraternal world.

Saint Paul offers us a way to create a just world for all; the prayer. Pray for each other , especially for people who have significant social or religious responsibility . If these responsible persons in the society manage the financial affairs correctly, control the distribution of the universal resource in an equilibrium manner and if they take care of the poor, the weak and the oppressed in our society, we will never see the misery on earth.

Jesus is not against the world's wealth and even today he appreciates the skill of the man who is dishonest. The ability of the manager invites us to consider not only the use of wealth, but also our relationship with money . Jesus recognized the important role of money in the life of man. The Lord himself offers us money as a means of sharing to attract friends in our lives. The only criticism of the Lord has is that the importance attributed by man to the money.

God, who is faithful calls us to be faithful to the promise of God. The Christian faith helps us to live our lives according to the Gospel values. If we walk in the ways suggested by the Lord and if we put God's Word into practice in our daily life, we can manage money properly.

Although the gospel and the other readings of the day deal widely money , justice and prayer , it is not those points that interested the Lord. It is this decision in front of his person and his message that determines the future life. It starts with dialogue, conversion, forgiveness and sharing. These are the ways that will bring us to eternal peace. The Lord has not come to judge the world, but through Him the world may be saved. Amen .

Évangile selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 9, 9-13)

Gospel text (Mt 9,9-13):

As Jesus moved on, He saw a man named Matthew at his seat in the custom-house, and He said to him, «Follow me». And Matthew got up and followed him. Now it happened, while Jesus was at table in Matthew's house, many tax collectors and other sinners joined Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this they said to his disciples, «Why is it that your master eats with those sinners and tax collectors?». When Jesus heard this he said, «Healthy people do not need a doctor, but sick people do. Go and find out what this means: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners».

The message

We haven’t forgotten Sunday gospel where we find the faithful shepherded who has left behind 99 sheep went in search of the lost one and the joy of finding it back. Today Mathew is in a festival mode, filled with gratitude, for the Lord has found him worthy to be his disciple. He proposes a big feast and invites his friends to participate in his joy.

In this joyful occasion there are also the critics who accuse the Lord being friendly with the sinners. Jesus finds this juncture to teach the essential of divine mercy and the joy of the Father: “What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners». He has said this many times, but the people who are against love and forgiveness will never understand this Joy of conversion.

The call of Mathew is a call to all of us, the sinner for conversion and a possibility to participate in the mission of the Lord. Are we ready to respond positively to this call and prepared to leave behind everything and follow the Lord as Mathew did?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 8, 1-3)

Gospel text (Lc 8,1-3):

Jesus walked through towns and countryside, preaching and giving the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve followed him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary called Magdalene, who had been freed of seven demons; Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod's steward; Suzanna and others who provided for them out of their own funds.

The message

While reading this gospel, we can’t but admire the way God works in our daily lives and the need of our cooperation in the service of evangelization. Jesus walked through towns and countryside without making any noise. He works in silence just like the heavenly Father spoke to the disturbed and fearful running prophet Elijah in the murmuring of the breeze.

Even though we don’t hear much about the financial support received by Jesus in his ministry in the gospels, Luke name some important people who shared their resources for the proclamation of the Good News. We know that this material and spiritual support is important for the Church.

Each one of us is called to respond positively to the mission of evangelization. Let us do the best possible and may God bless all those who engage in this mission directly or indirectly.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 7, 36-50)

— Tu as raison », lui dit Jésus.

Gospel text (Lc 7,36-50):

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to share his meal, so He went to the Pharisee's home and as usual reclined on the sofa to eat. And it happened that a woman of this town, who was known as a sinner, heard that He was in the Pharisee's house. She brought a precious jar of perfume and stood behind him at his feet, weeping. She wet his feet with tears, she dried them with her hair and kissed his feet and poured the perfume on them.

The Pharisee who had invited Jesus was watching and thought, «If this man were a prophet, he would know what sort of person is touching him; isn't this woman a sinner?». Then Jesus spoke to the Pharisee and said, «Simon, I have something to ask you». He answered, «Speak, master». And Jesus said, «Two people were in debt to the same creditor. One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other fifty. As they were unable to pay him back, he graciously canceled the debts of both. Now, which of them will love him more?». Simon answered, «The one, I suppose, who was forgiven more». And Jesus said, «You are right». And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, «Do you see this woman? You gave me no water for my feet when I entered your house, but she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You didn't welcome me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing my feet since she came in. You provided no oil for my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. This is why, I tell you, her sins, her many sins, are forgiven, because of her great love. But the one who is forgiven little, has little love».

Then Jesus said to the woman, «Your sins are forgiven». The others sitting with him at the table began to wonder, «Now this man claims to forgive sins!». But Jesus again spoke to the woman, «Your faith has saved you; go in peace».

The message

This sinful woman, a sinner in the eyes of the people, finds herself before God as the most beloved of all. Jesus the master of mercies accepts the love offered by her through her acts.

Different people have different opinion, but Jesus has only love to offer and forgives all her sin, because she loved him. It is in this love she merited the forgiveness. “This is why, I tell you, her sins, her many sins, are forgiven, because of her great love.”

It is through this love that others will recognize that we are children of God. If all show this love, there will be plenty of pardon and will there never be the violence.

Let us go back to God and show our love through action, and the Lord will accept our love as He has accepted the love of this sinner and will promise to us the inner peace that we long very much in our daily lives.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 7, 31-35)

Gospel text (Lc 7,31-35):

The Lord said, «What comparison can I use for this people? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, about whom their companions complain: ‘We piped you a tune and you wouldn't dance; we sang funeral songs and you wouldn't cry’. Remember John: he didn't eat bread or drink wine, and you said: ‘He has an evil spirit’. Next came the Son of Man, eating and drinking, and you say: ‘Look, a glutton for food and wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners’. But the children of Wisdom always recognize her work».

The message

Today Jesus is sad after seeing the sorry status of the society. How wicked it has become that everywhere it sees only the bad things. Even in Jesus it refuses to see the presence of God.

It is not that evil don’t exist in this world, but Jesus seems to remind us that if we only see the evil in the society, than there is evil in our thoughts and in our hearts.

Jesus looks everyone with a divine mercy and forgives all. Let us have the same vision of Jesus and we will find this divine presence in us, in spite of our unworthiness. Let us imitate the way Jesus looks us and we will see the wonder work of the Lord in our lives.
