Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 4, 38-44)

Gospel text (Lc 4,38-44):

Leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to the house of Simon. His mother-in-law was suffering from high fever and they asked him to do something for her. Bending over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and waited on them. At sunset, people suffering from many kinds of sickness were brought to Jesus. Laying his hands on each one, He healed them. Demons were driven out, howling as they departed from their victims, «You are the Son of God!». He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, for they knew He was the Messiah.

Jesus left at daybreak and looked for a solitary place. People went out in search of him and, finding him, they tried to dissuade him from leaving. But He said, «I have to go to other towns to announce the good news of the kingdom of God. That is what I was sent to do». So Jesus continued to preach in the synagogues of the Jewish country.

The message

The disciples are feasting from the miracles of Jesus with the local people. All wish that Jesus stays in this village and continue to do good. There is a difference in the behavior of Jesus. He is alone in a desert place, in solitude with His Father. He gives thanks and glorifies the Father for all that has happened and praises the Father for the Joy overwhelming in the heart of the people.

It is here the temptation crypts in; remain solid where we are welcomed. A good missionary cannot stay in a place for long time. It is not a healthy approach, unless and until one is asked for. Jesus is asked to leave the place for the universal mission, and He does it with a great joy. If we wish to participate in this Joy, we have to be rooted in Jesus, as He is rooted in his Father. Thus we will be always available for the mission of the Lord.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 4, 31-37)

Gospel text (Lc 4,31-37):

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee, and began teaching the people at the sabbath meetings. They were astonished at the way He taught them, for his word was spoken with authority. In the synagogue there was a man possessed by an evil spirit who shouted in a loud voice, «What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I recognize you: you are the Holy One of God». Then Jesus said to him sharply, «Be silent and leave this man!». The evil spirit then threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him harm. Amazement seized all these people and they said to one another, «What does this mean? He commands the evil spirits with authority and power. He orders, and you see how they come out!». And news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding area.

The message

The people of Nazareth have welcomed the Word of God with a great joy, because they have believed in Him and all that He has spoken. It is because of this faith that the human being could discover the invisible creator in Jesus Christ.

Jesus the master of all speaks with authority. Once this authority is respected and recognized, our approach to the Lord will drastically change. To know the hidden power, we have to just believe in Him. He is speaking to us every day through events, people and through their history. If we look the world with an eye of faith, it is easy to discover this power of the Word of God and the wonders she accomplishes in this universe.

Do we have faith in Jesus Christ?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 4, 16-30)

Gospel text (Lc 4,16-30):

When Jesus came to Nazareth where He had been brought up, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath as He usually did. He stood up to read and they handed him the book of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus then unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written: «The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and new sight to the blind; to free the oppressed and announce the Lord's year of mercy».

Jesus then rolled up the scroll, gave it to the attendant and sat down, while the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then He said to them, «Today these prophetic words come true even as you listen». All agreed with him and were lost in wonder, while He kept on speaking of the grace of God. Nevertheless they asked, «Who is this but Joseph's son?». So He said, «Doubtless you will quote me the saying: Doctor, heal yourself! Do here in your town what they say you did in Capernaum». Jesus added, «No prophet is honored in his own country. Truly, I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens with-held rain for three years and six months and a great famine came over the whole land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow of Zarephath, in the country of Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha, the prophet, and no one was healed except Naaman, the Syrian».

On hearing these words, the whole assembly became indignant. They rose up and brought him out of the town, to the edge of the hill on which Nazareth is built, intending to throw him down the cliff. But he passed through their midst and went his way.

The message

The same people who has recognized that the grace have come out of the mouth of the Lord, has pushed him out of the town. What has drastically changed is the word of the Lord, the word filled with historical truth has hurt the sentiment of the people. Jesus just provoked the sleeping arrogance of the people and their hard heartedness to believe in Him.

Jesus has come to liberate us from the past and he will open our blindness to see the wonders of the Lord towards a bright future. Even though this liberating teaching is open to everyone, only very few will listen to Him and put the eternal Word in to practice, which will liberate us.

In frond of this liberating Word of God, we have two choices; either we accept this Word and be converted, or reject this life giving Word and continue to live in darkness. It is up to us to decide.

» Amen.

Gospel text (Lc 14,1.7-14):

One Sabbath Jesus had gone to eat a meal in the house of a leading Pharisee, and He was carefully watched. Jesus then told a parable to the guests, for He had noticed how they tried to take the places of honor. And He said, «When you are invited to a wedding party, do not choose the best seat. It may happen that someone more important than you has been invited, and your host, who invited both of you, will come and say to you: ‘Please give this person your place’. What shame is yours when you take the lowest seat! Whenever you are invited, go rather to the lowest seat, so that your host may come and say to you: ‘Friend, you must come up higher’. And this will be a great honor for you in the presence of all the other guests. For whoever makes himself out to be great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be raised».

Jesus also addressed the man who had invited him and said, «When you give a lunch or a dinner, don't invite your friends, or your brothers and relatives and wealthy neighbors. For surely they will also invite you in return and you will be repaid. When you give a feast, invite instead the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind. Fortunate are you then, because they can't repay you; you will be repaid at the Resurrection of the upright».

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 25, 14-30)

Gospel text (Mt 25,14-30):

Jesus told this parable to his disciples, «Imagine someone who, before going abroad, summoned his servants to entrust his property to them. He gave five talents of silver to one, then two to another, and one to a third, each one according to his ability; and he went away. He who received five talents went at once to do business with the money and gained another five. The one who received two did the same and gained another two. But the one with one talent dug a hole and hid his master's money.

»After a long time, the master of those servants returned and asked for a reckoning. The one who received five talents came with another five talents, saying: ‘Lord, you entrusted me with five talents, but see I have gained five more with them’. The master answered: ‘Very well, good and faithful servant, since you have been faithful in a few things, I will entrust you with much more. Come and share the joy of your master’. Then the one who had two talents came and said: ‘Lord, you entrusted me with two talents; I have two more which I gained with them’. The master said: ‘Well, good and faithful servant, since you have been faithful in little things, I will entrust you with much more. Come and share the joy of your master’.

»Finally, the one who had received one talent came and said: ‘Master, I know that you are an exacting man. You reap what you have not sown and gather what you have not invested. I was afraid, so I hid your money in the ground. Here, take what is yours’. But his master replied: ‘Wicked and worthless servant, you know that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not invested. Then you should have deposited my money in the bank, and you would have given it back to me with interest on my return. Therefore, take the talent from him, and give it to the one who has ten. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who are unproductive, even what they have will be taken from them. As for that useless servant, throw him out into the dark where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth’».

The message

The parable of talents is at same time consoling and demanding. It is consoling, because God ignores no one. Even the least among the great does receive a talent. God leaves no one empty hand. If every human beings to discover that entire he has received and recognizes the value of all that he has, there will be no one under the earth will remain empty hand, because everyone has something precious. Emptiness is our perception, the beginning of our laziness and the starting point of our destruction.

It is demanding, because it will force us to do more. The more we do, the more we receive and the more we receive the more are demanded from us. The very day we realize the worth of all that we have received, we will be assuming the responsibility of maintaining, developing and multiplying. Only the person who recognizes the gift received will value the importance of the gift.

In this parable, the servant is judged by his own words. He by his own behavior invited the judgment. If we wish avoid this radical end, we have to recognize the gifts the Lord has given to us and we have to multiply these gifts for the well being of our society.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 25, 1-13)

Gospel text (Mt 25,1-13):

Jesus said to his disciples, «This story throws light on what will happen in the kingdom of heaven. Ten bridesmaids went out with their lamps to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were careless while the others were sensible. The careless bridesmaids took their lamps as they were and did not bring extra oil. But those who were sensible, brought with their lamps flasks of oil. As the bridegroom delayed, they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight, a cry rang out: ‘The bridegroom is here, come out and meet him!’ All the maidens woke up at once and trimmed their lamps. Then the careless ones said to the sensible ones: ‘Give us some oil, for our lamps are going out’. The sensible ones answered: ‘There may not be enough for both you and us. You had better go to those who sell and buy for yourselves’. They were out buying oil when the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him to the wed-ding feast, and the doors were shut. Later the rest of the bridesmaids arrived and called out: ‘Lord, Lord, open to us’. But he answered: ‘Truly, I do not know you’. So, stay awake, for you do not know the day nor the hour».

The message

Dear friends, the parable of ten young girls remind us of our ill preparedness and help us to put in order ourselves, so that when the Lord comes, we may be ready to enter with Him. For all the baptized, the Lamp is the Lord himself. He is the only person who is capable of leading us towards the Father. The Christian virtues are like the oil who feeds the lamp. If we wish that the Lord reminds with us and in us, we have feed our life with the Christian virtues, which are essential for our Christian faith. It is precisely because that the sensible ones responded negatively to others. The Christians virtues by which we have clothed selves cannot be shared and they are very much personalized. The more we are cloth ourselves by these virtues, the better we will remain prepared and illumined by the Lord himself. Are we clothed by these virtues? It is better that we go back immediately and search these is our lives.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 6,17-29)

Gospel text (Mc 6,17-29):

Herod had sent to have John arrested, and had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married. For John had told him, «It is not right for you to live with your brother's wife». So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but she could not because Herod respected John. He knew John to be an upright and holy man and kept him safe. And he liked listening to him, although he became very disturbed whenever he heard him.

Herodias had her chance on Herod's birthday, when he gave a dinner for all the senior government officials, military chiefs and the leaders of Galilee. On that occasion the daughter of Herodias came in and danced; and she delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, «Ask me for anything you want and I will give it to you». And he went so far as to say with many oaths, «I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom». She went out to consult her mother, «What shall I ask for?». The mother replied, «The head of John the Baptist». The girl hurried to the king and made her request: «I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist, here and now, on a dish». The king was very displeased, but he would not refuse in front of his guests because of his oaths. So he sent one of the bodyguards with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded John in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother. When John's disciples heard of this, they came and took his body and buried it.

The message

Saint John Baptist not only indentified to us the savior to the world, he followed the Lord very close possible to the extent that he lived the cross of Jesus before Jesus himself by showing us the need of the Cross and resurrection in our daily lives by his martyrdom.

John’s life was centered on Jesus and asked his disciples to follow Jesus the true master of life. It is in this anchor of life that John could face Herod without any fear and witness the Truth by shedding his blood.

The story of John Baptist reminds us the crud reality of violence, injustice and manipulation, which are rampart in our society and the necessity of many John Baptists in our society, to stand up and say the Truth without fear. Only if our life is anchored on Jesus Christ, can we have this courage and the wisdom to stand for the Truth.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 23, 27-32)

Gospel text (Mt 23,27-32):

Jesus said, «Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs beautiful in appearance, but inside there are only dead bones and uncleanness. In the same way you appear as religious to others, but you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness within. Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous. You say: Had we lived in the time of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in the blood of prophets. So, you yourselves confess to be kins of those who murdered the prophets. And now, finish off what your ancestors began!».

The message

Jesus is inviting us to look in to the quality of our spiritual life. Sincerity is one of virtues that God wills in us, which is always possible to us. All the more when we are leaders who lead and guide others, our life should be open to all. People should see us not only our action, but also our inner life which inspires our action.

Jesus is inviting us to construct our lives on the rock of divine love from where our actions should find its root. It is from this fountain that people should quench their thirst. Let us not follow the worldly models which will lead us to the pleasure, but the model in Jesus Christ which will lead us to the eternal joy.

While celebrating the feast of saint Augustin let us be assured that the conversion is always possible.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 23, 23-26)

Gospel text (Mt 23,23-26):

Jesus said, «Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You do not forget the mint, anise and cumin seeds when you pay the tenth of everything, but then you forget what is most fundamental in the Law: justice, mercy and faith. These you must practice, without neglecting the others. Blind guides! You strain out a mosquito, but swallow a camel. Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You fill the plate and the cup with theft and violence, and then pronounce a blessing over them. Blind Pharisee! Purify the inside first, then the outside too will be purified».

The message

Today the church is celebrating the feast of Saint Monica, the symbol of prayer and perseverance, the mother of a great saint Agustin. In this world where many false leaders get flourished, she remains a sign of God’s presence and hope to the humanity.

God looks at the heart of people and the exterior is not of such value in comparisons with that of the interior of the person. Saint Paul always believed that if the heart of the person lives in Christ, his action will be automatically good. No good tree can give a bad fruit.

People often get mistaken by seeing the exterior life of an individual, where us the interior of the person and his source of life which is invisible and inaccessible to the other, will tell us the truth of the person.

How do we look at every one we meet while building our relationship and are we not very often get misled by the exterior life of an individual? Are we not very busy with our presentations and with our personal images? Let us head to the counsel of Jesus: “Blind Pharisee! Purify the inside first, and then the outside too will be purified».

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 23, 13.15-22)

Gospel text (Mt 23,13-22):

Jesus said, «Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door to the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor do you allow others to do so. Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel by sea and land to win a single convert, yet once he is converted, you turn him twice as fit for hell as yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides! You say: ‘To swear by the Temple is not binding, but to swear by the treasure of the Temple is’. Blind fools! Which is of more worth? The gold in the Temple or the Temple which makes the gold a sacred treasure? You say: ‘To swear by the altar is not binding, but to swear by the offering on the altar is’. How blind you are! Which is of more value: the offering on the altar or the altar which makes the offering sacred? Whoever swears by the altar is swearing by the altar and by everything on it. Whoever swears by the Temple is swearing by it and by God who dwells in the Temple. Whoever swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it».

The message

There are many people in this world, who are very generous to help others. This generosity is born of self realization and self knowledge of their being and having. These people love to remain behind and work for the well being of others.

The concern of Jesus is not one such person. He is very much concerned of bad and self proclaimed masters who longs for name and fame in the society. They live in a miserable condition before God and will lead the innocent people to the same miserable state of life or to the worst state.

Jesus is inviting each and every one of us to the essentials of life and he is helping us to indentify the marvelous and merciful works of the Father in our lives. He is reminding us of our blindness of life is our discernment and asking us to have some self evaluation of our value system before this merciful God.
