Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 10, 13-16)

En parlant aux soixante-douze disciples, Jésus disait :
« Malheureuse es-tu, Corazine !

Gospel text (Lc 10,13-16):

Jesus said, «Alas for you Chorazin! Alas for you Bethsaida! So many miracles have been worked in you! If the same miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would already be sitting in ashes and wearing the sackcloth of repentance. Surely for Tyre and Sidon it will be better than for you on the Judgment Day. And what of you, city of Capernaum? Will you be lifted up to heaven? You will be thrown down to the place of the dead. Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me, rejects the one who sent me».

The message

Let us not take these words of Jesus as a condemnation, but in truth these words are of deep sadness. The Lord is sad that the people have rejected the Word of God, the Good News, and the arrival of the Kingdom of God.

Jesus is reminding us that it is the Lord who is sending us and whenever we are rejected, it is the Lord who is rejected. Thus we have to be very careful when we speak. Our words should be exactly the Word of the Lord which consoles and heals the broken hearted.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 10, 1-12)

Gospel text (Lc 10,1-12): The Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place, where he himself was to go. And He said to them, «The harvest is rich, but the workers are few. So you must ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers to his harvest. Courage! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Set off without purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you know.

»Whatever house you enter, first bless them saying: ‘Peace to this house’. If a friend of peace lives there, the peace shall rest upon that person. But if not, the blessing will return to you. Stay in that house eating and drinking at their table, for the worker deserves to be paid. Do not move from house to house.

»When they welcome you in any town, eat what they offer you. Heal the sick who are there and say to them: ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you’. But in any town where you are not welcome, go to the marketplace and proclaim: ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off and leave with you. But know and be sure that the kingdom of God had come to you’. I tell you that on the Judgment Day it will be better for Sodom than for this town».

The message

After choosing his apostles, the Lord once again chooses some more disciples to proclaim the good news. Thus Jesus seems to communicate to us that evangelization is not reserved to the elite and few chosen ones, rather all the baptized. He sends them all together. It indicates the importance of community witness and its involvement in the mission of the Lord.

The mission starts with prayer. The union with the Father and the awareness of being sent is important to every missionary. It is from this ‘being sent’ that every missionary is called to resource himself and he should depend totally at the providence of the Lord.

Since the mission is to announce the Kingdom of God and spread peace in the society, forgiveness and dialogue are proposed as a means to solve the problems or when the disciples are faced with rejection.

Are we ready to take up this mission? And I sincerely believe that we have no option than announcing the Kingdom of God, because we are children of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 18, 1-5.10)

Gospel text (Lc 9,57-62):

As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, a man said to him, «I will follow you wherever you go». Jesus said to him, «Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head». To another Jesus said, «Follow me». But he answered, «Let me go back now, for first I want to bury my father». And Jesus said to him, «Let the dead bury their dead; as for you, leave them and proclaim the kingdom of God». Another said to him, «I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to my family». And Jesus said to him, «Whoever has put his hand to the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God».

The message

To follow Jesus we have to accept the life of Jesus as our own. Leaving behind our personal desires and interests and getting rooted in the Spirit of the Lord, where we should be able to say just like Saint Paul, it is not I, but Christ lives in me. There is no turning back. It is just like a one way ticket without any promise of return to the old way of life.

It is not given to all and we have to humbly accept that without the call and grace of God, no one could follow Jesus. Those who have said Yes to God should be humble just like Jesus, our master and be faithful to Him as He is faithful to the Father.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 51-56)

Gospel text (Lc 9,51-56):

As the time drew near when Jesus would be taken up to heaven, He made up his mind to go to Jerusalem. He had sent ahead of him some messengers who entered a Samaritan village to prepare a lodging for him. But the people would not receive him because He was on his way to Jerusalem. Seeing this, James and John, his disciples said, «Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to reduce them to ashes?». Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they went on to another village.

The message

The Lord always had a good answer to a bad question. He never allowed others to decide the way He acts or reacts. Even when He is rejected by the people, He could pray for them and love them. He teaches his disciples to be so. If the Lord has accepted the Cross, it is not to judge the world, but to save them. He is a good doctor who cures good and bad people.

Humanly we are also tempted to react violently when we are rejected or attacked and all the more when we are entrusted with power. Jesus the master of all the powers possible on this earth proposes the dialogue and the forgiveness as means for peace and tranquility in the society. Is there any one to listen to Him?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 46-50)

Gospel text (Lc 9,46-50):

One day the disciples were arguing about which of them was the most important. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he took a little child and stood him by his side. Then He said to them, «Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. And listen: the one who is found to be the least among you all, is the one who is the greatest».

Then John spoke up, «Master, we saw someone who drove out demons by calling upon your name, and we tried to forbid him because he doesn't follow you with us». But Jesus said, «Don't forbid him. He who is not against you is for you».

The message

We are living in a world of competitions where the human beings are measured solely through their successes. Jesus reminds us that there is something more important than these worldly glories; the humility and a life filled with peace and tranquility.

In life we have lots of expectations and when these expectations are not actualized, we lose our mental peace and even the happiness that the Lord has offered to us. It is in this disparate situation, we start to do harm to others, to the extent even blocking someone who does good in the pretext of some raisons.

The gospel presents the consequence of evil thinking and shows the inner feeling of the disciples to stop someone doing good. Happily they consulted with the Lord and with His grace they could get the right perspective. Let us continually consult the Lord before starting an activity and we will be happy.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 16, 19-31)

Amen.

Gospel text (Lc 16,19-31):

Jesus said to the Pharisees, «Once there was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and feasted every day. At his gate lay Lazarus, a poor man covered with sores, who longed to eat just the scraps falling from the rich man's table. Even dogs used to come and lick his sores.

»It happened that the poor man died and angels carried him to take his place with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. From hell where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham afar off, and with him Lazarus at rest. He called out: ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus with the tip of his finger dipped in water to cool my tongue, for I suffer so much in this fire’. Abraham replied: ‘My son, remember that in your lifetime you were well-off while the lot of Lazarus was misfortune. Now he is in comfort and you are in agony. But that is not all. Between your place and ours a great chasm has been fixed, so that no one can cross over from here to you or from your side to us’.

»The rich man implored once more: ‘Then I beg you, Father Abraham, to send Lazarus to my father's house where my five brothers live. Let him warn them so that they may not end up in this place of torment’. Abraham replied: ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them’. But the rich man said: ‘No, Father Abraham. But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent’. Abraham said: ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the grave’».

Homily

The Christian faith has its foundation not only in the eternal life, death and resurrection, the revelation of God in Jesus Christ, but also in the love relationship with this God and with our neighbors. This faith helps us to keep the Lord's commandment: «love one another as I have loved you." If we do not know the love of God and if we did not taste, if we do not share what we have received, how can we expect to keep this commandment and call ourselves as Christians?
"There was a rich man ... A poor man was lying at his gate. " It's always the same contrast today. Rich live in abundance while the poor more numerous remain in misery. This poverty is not that only material: we must not forget those who are deprived of freedom, culture, and social status and especially of love, peace and charity. God has blessed us with these riches that we fail to recognize and refuse to share.
The parable of a rich man and Lazarus shows us two different things in contrast. The rich man is in hell, suffering the torture, suffering a scary feeling, and Lazarus, near Abraham, in a comforting feeling.
What interests me is not the scary feeling, or my future consolation after death, but this feeling of fear mentioned in this parable, being ignored, abandoned in the solitude without any friends to support me here on this earth. The rich was not able to see the suffering of Lazarus, and he left him to suffer alone. Let this come to no one we meet or see today. Let them find in this a good Samaritan who takes care of them and respond to them positively.

It is true that we believe in the resurrection, but the resurrection is not totally dependent on our actions in this life, rather to the mercy and love of God toward us and the way we love Him while living our lives according the evangelical values. It is a judgment of love, about love, without denying the role of our behavior.
It is interesting to note in this parable that it is not an single act , or the story of one day which has condemned this rich, but I will be judged rather the whole life -long habit of my relationship with my neighbors and the way o build my neighborhood is questioned in this story.

I have to master the way I use my resources, whether material, spiritual, a good use of my talents and my goods. In this story the rich had done nothing wrong and the gospel makes no moral judgment. His problem is that he does not love his brother and he lacked drastically in the love relationship. His longing for little pleasures in life continue even in hell. He doesn’t desire for a radical change, rather a little touch from this poor man.

Let us love each other and live our life by sharing all the rachises we have received from God by which we may be recognized as children of God and by seeing our lives let others say that we are Christians.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 43b-45)

Gospel text (Lc 9,43b-45):

While all were amazed at everything Jesus did, He said to his disciples, «Listen and remember what I tell you now: The Son of Man will be delivered into human hands». But the disciples didn't understand this saying; something prevented them from grasping what He meant, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

The message

Whenever the disciples were with the crowd, they allowed themselves to be overtaken by the admiration of miracles and the words of human glorification. It is not surprising that the disciples didn’t give heed the importance of what the Lord has just revealed to them.

The revelation is for all, only the few, to whom God has willed the grace, do understand all that the Lord has revealed to us. Very often the Lord has taken his disciples away from the crowd to explain to them the parables which they failed to understand.

If we don’t understand the Word of the Lord, then the message is very clear: We are with the crowd not with the Lord. Only if we are with the Lord, will we be able to understand the love of God, who has sent His only son to take up the Cross for our sins and the Word of the Lord inviting us today and right now for conversion. Are you ready to hear and understand this Word of love and forgiveness?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 18-22)

Gospel text (Lc 9,18-22):

One day when Jesus was praying alone, not far from his disciples, He asked them, «What do people say about me?». And they answered, «Some say that you are John the Baptist; others say that you are Elijah, and still others that you are one of the former prophets risen from the dead». Again Jesus asked them, «Who then do you say I am?». Peter answered, «The Messiah of God». Then Jesus spoke to them, giving them strict orders not to tell this to anyone. And he added, «The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life».

The message

The Christian life is filled with crosses, and through these crosses we will have the resurrection. If we wish to carry these crosses and desire to make it light, then we have to personalize the faith we have received through our baptism. If this faith is not personalized as ‘my faith’, when we are faced with troubles, we will tremble and fail.

Jesus knowing very well the Cross which he has to carry and in later days His disciples have to carry, wishes that their faith be personalized and that his disciples realizes the consequences of this Faith.

Sadly the disciples have lost sight of the cross and the resurrection that the Lord has revealed to them today.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 7-9)

Gospel text (Lc 9,7-9):

King Herod heard of all that Jesus was doing and did not know what to think, for people said, «This is John, raised from the dead». Others believed that Elijah or one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. As for Herod, he said, «I had John beheaded; who is this man about whom I hear such wonders?». And he was anxious to see him.

The message

It’s not enough to say Lord, Lord, without doing anything Jesus is asking us to do. Many our desires to be saint or to live a saintly life remain in the air without seeing the bright day of the truth, because we don’t put our energy in action.

King Herod was anxious to see Jesus, but never took the initiative to go and see him. Even when he got the opportunity to see him and be saved of his sins, he rather mocked Jesus, thus refused the forgiveness offered by Jesus.

Dear brothers, why to wait for tomorrow? Let us be converted right now, go to see Jesus and put in practice all that He will ask us to do.

Gospel text (Lc 9,1-6):

Jesus called his twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to drive out all evil spirits and to heal diseases. And He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He instructed them, «Don't take anything for the journey, neither walking stick, nor bag, nor bread, nor silver coins; and don't even take a spare tunic. Whatever house you enter, remain there until you leave that place. And wherever they don't welcome you, leave the town and shake the dust from your feet: it will be as a testimony against them». So they set out and went through the villages, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

The message

We are all missionaries called to announce the kingdom of God. All the missionaries have to depend totally to the providence of the Lord, because we are called and sent by the Lord.

Let us not forget however that this providence of the Lord comes through our brothers and sisters. It is through them that the Lord accompanies us. He will never abandon us. He will be with us always.

The Lord sends us together as a community to announce the Good News. The community witness with its strengths and weaknesses is very important to announce the kingdom of God. It is in and through this community that others will find the individuals who live together, love and forgive each other. Let our personal life itself becomes a means to announce the Kingdom of God.
