Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 25, 14-30)

Gospel text (Mt 25,14-30):

Jesus told this parable to his disciples, «Imagine someone who, before going abroad, summoned his servants to entrust his property to them. He gave five talents of silver to one, then two to another, and one to a third, each one according to his ability; and he went away. He who received five talents went at once to do business with the money and gained another five. The one who received two did the same and gained another two. But the one with one talent dug a hole and hid his master's money.

»After a long time, the master of those servants returned and asked for a reckoning. The one who received five talents came with another five talents, saying: ‘Lord, you entrusted me with five talents, but see I have gained five more with them’. The master answered: ‘Very well, good and faithful servant, since you have been faithful in a few things, I will entrust you with much more. Come and share the joy of your master’. Then the one who had two talents came and said: ‘Lord, you entrusted me with two talents; I have two more which I gained with them’. The master said: ‘Well, good and faithful servant, since you have been faithful in little things, I will entrust you with much more. Come and share the joy of your master’.

»Finally, the one who had received one talent came and said: ‘Master, I know that you are an exacting man. You reap what you have not sown and gather what you have not invested. I was afraid, so I hid your money in the ground. Here, take what is yours’. But his master replied: ‘Wicked and worthless servant, you know that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not invested. Then you should have deposited my money in the bank, and you would have given it back to me with interest on my return. Therefore, take the talent from him, and give it to the one who has ten. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who are unproductive, even what they have will be taken from them. As for that useless servant, throw him out into the dark where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth’».

The message

The parable of talents is at same time consoling and demanding. It is consoling, because God ignores no one. Even the least among the great does receive a talent. God leaves no one empty hand. If every human beings to discover that entire he has received and recognizes the value of all that he has, there will be no one under the earth will remain empty hand, because everyone has something precious. Emptiness is our perception, the beginning of our laziness and the starting point of our destruction.

It is demanding, because it will force us to do more. The more we do, the more we receive and the more we receive the more are demanded from us. The very day we realize the worth of all that we have received, we will be assuming the responsibility of maintaining, developing and multiplying. Only the person who recognizes the gift received will value the importance of the gift.

In this parable, the servant is judged by his own words. He by his own behavior invited the judgment. If we wish avoid this radical end, we have to recognize the gifts the Lord has given to us and we have to multiply these gifts for the well being of our society.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 25, 1-13)

Gospel text (Mt 25,1-13):

Jesus said to his disciples, «This story throws light on what will happen in the kingdom of heaven. Ten bridesmaids went out with their lamps to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were careless while the others were sensible. The careless bridesmaids took their lamps as they were and did not bring extra oil. But those who were sensible, brought with their lamps flasks of oil. As the bridegroom delayed, they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight, a cry rang out: ‘The bridegroom is here, come out and meet him!’ All the maidens woke up at once and trimmed their lamps. Then the careless ones said to the sensible ones: ‘Give us some oil, for our lamps are going out’. The sensible ones answered: ‘There may not be enough for both you and us. You had better go to those who sell and buy for yourselves’. They were out buying oil when the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him to the wed-ding feast, and the doors were shut. Later the rest of the bridesmaids arrived and called out: ‘Lord, Lord, open to us’. But he answered: ‘Truly, I do not know you’. So, stay awake, for you do not know the day nor the hour».

The message

Dear friends, the parable of ten young girls remind us of our ill preparedness and help us to put in order ourselves, so that when the Lord comes, we may be ready to enter with Him. For all the baptized, the Lamp is the Lord himself. He is the only person who is capable of leading us towards the Father. The Christian virtues are like the oil who feeds the lamp. If we wish that the Lord reminds with us and in us, we have feed our life with the Christian virtues, which are essential for our Christian faith. It is precisely because that the sensible ones responded negatively to others. The Christians virtues by which we have clothed selves cannot be shared and they are very much personalized. The more we are cloth ourselves by these virtues, the better we will remain prepared and illumined by the Lord himself. Are we clothed by these virtues? It is better that we go back immediately and search these is our lives.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 6,17-29)

Gospel text (Mc 6,17-29):

Herod had sent to have John arrested, and had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married. For John had told him, «It is not right for you to live with your brother's wife». So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but she could not because Herod respected John. He knew John to be an upright and holy man and kept him safe. And he liked listening to him, although he became very disturbed whenever he heard him.

Herodias had her chance on Herod's birthday, when he gave a dinner for all the senior government officials, military chiefs and the leaders of Galilee. On that occasion the daughter of Herodias came in and danced; and she delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, «Ask me for anything you want and I will give it to you». And he went so far as to say with many oaths, «I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom». She went out to consult her mother, «What shall I ask for?». The mother replied, «The head of John the Baptist». The girl hurried to the king and made her request: «I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist, here and now, on a dish». The king was very displeased, but he would not refuse in front of his guests because of his oaths. So he sent one of the bodyguards with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded John in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother. When John's disciples heard of this, they came and took his body and buried it.

The message

Saint John Baptist not only indentified to us the savior to the world, he followed the Lord very close possible to the extent that he lived the cross of Jesus before Jesus himself by showing us the need of the Cross and resurrection in our daily lives by his martyrdom.

John’s life was centered on Jesus and asked his disciples to follow Jesus the true master of life. It is in this anchor of life that John could face Herod without any fear and witness the Truth by shedding his blood.

The story of John Baptist reminds us the crud reality of violence, injustice and manipulation, which are rampart in our society and the necessity of many John Baptists in our society, to stand up and say the Truth without fear. Only if our life is anchored on Jesus Christ, can we have this courage and the wisdom to stand for the Truth.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 23, 27-32)

Gospel text (Mt 23,27-32):

Jesus said, «Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs beautiful in appearance, but inside there are only dead bones and uncleanness. In the same way you appear as religious to others, but you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness within. Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous. You say: Had we lived in the time of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in the blood of prophets. So, you yourselves confess to be kins of those who murdered the prophets. And now, finish off what your ancestors began!».

The message

Jesus is inviting us to look in to the quality of our spiritual life. Sincerity is one of virtues that God wills in us, which is always possible to us. All the more when we are leaders who lead and guide others, our life should be open to all. People should see us not only our action, but also our inner life which inspires our action.

Jesus is inviting us to construct our lives on the rock of divine love from where our actions should find its root. It is from this fountain that people should quench their thirst. Let us not follow the worldly models which will lead us to the pleasure, but the model in Jesus Christ which will lead us to the eternal joy.

While celebrating the feast of saint Augustin let us be assured that the conversion is always possible.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 23, 23-26)

Gospel text (Mt 23,23-26):

Jesus said, «Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You do not forget the mint, anise and cumin seeds when you pay the tenth of everything, but then you forget what is most fundamental in the Law: justice, mercy and faith. These you must practice, without neglecting the others. Blind guides! You strain out a mosquito, but swallow a camel. Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You fill the plate and the cup with theft and violence, and then pronounce a blessing over them. Blind Pharisee! Purify the inside first, then the outside too will be purified».

The message

Today the church is celebrating the feast of Saint Monica, the symbol of prayer and perseverance, the mother of a great saint Agustin. In this world where many false leaders get flourished, she remains a sign of God’s presence and hope to the humanity.

God looks at the heart of people and the exterior is not of such value in comparisons with that of the interior of the person. Saint Paul always believed that if the heart of the person lives in Christ, his action will be automatically good. No good tree can give a bad fruit.

People often get mistaken by seeing the exterior life of an individual, where us the interior of the person and his source of life which is invisible and inaccessible to the other, will tell us the truth of the person.

How do we look at every one we meet while building our relationship and are we not very often get misled by the exterior life of an individual? Are we not very busy with our presentations and with our personal images? Let us head to the counsel of Jesus: “Blind Pharisee! Purify the inside first, and then the outside too will be purified».

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 23, 13.15-22)

Gospel text (Mt 23,13-22):

Jesus said, «Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door to the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor do you allow others to do so. Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel by sea and land to win a single convert, yet once he is converted, you turn him twice as fit for hell as yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides! You say: ‘To swear by the Temple is not binding, but to swear by the treasure of the Temple is’. Blind fools! Which is of more worth? The gold in the Temple or the Temple which makes the gold a sacred treasure? You say: ‘To swear by the altar is not binding, but to swear by the offering on the altar is’. How blind you are! Which is of more value: the offering on the altar or the altar which makes the offering sacred? Whoever swears by the altar is swearing by the altar and by everything on it. Whoever swears by the Temple is swearing by it and by God who dwells in the Temple. Whoever swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it».

The message

There are many people in this world, who are very generous to help others. This generosity is born of self realization and self knowledge of their being and having. These people love to remain behind and work for the well being of others.

The concern of Jesus is not one such person. He is very much concerned of bad and self proclaimed masters who longs for name and fame in the society. They live in a miserable condition before God and will lead the innocent people to the same miserable state of life or to the worst state.

Jesus is inviting each and every one of us to the essentials of life and he is helping us to indentify the marvelous and merciful works of the Father in our lives. He is reminding us of our blindness of life is our discernment and asking us to have some self evaluation of our value system before this merciful God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 13, 22-30)

Gospel text (Lc 13,22-30):

Jesus went through towns and villages teaching and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, «Lord, is it true that few people will be saved?». And Jesus answered, «Do your best to enter by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you will stand outside; then you will knock at the door calling: ‘Lord, open to us’. But he will say to you: ‘I do not know where you come from’. Then you will say: ‘We ate and drank with you and you taught in our streets!’. But he will reply: ‘I don't know where you come from. Away from me all you workers of evil’. You will weep and grind your teeth when you see Abraham and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves left outside. Others will sit at table in the kingdom of God, people coming from east and west, from north and south. Some who are among the last will be the first, and others who were first will be last!»

Homily

Jesus is responding to the question, «Lord, is it true that few people will be saved?» Salvation is the priority of Jesus and his mission is fully oriented to the salvation of humanity.

The only way one could enter in to the kingdom of God is by the narrow door. The narrow door demands certain exigencies from the person who so desires to enter in. Jesus is this door and without him no one can enter in to the kingdom of God. Let us sincerely ask ourselves the place Jesus has in our daily lives. If we wish to be saved it only by living a life which resembles the life of Jesus. His life was filled with joy and hope, which he shared with us by loving us and forgiving us. The narrow door do mean that we leave behind us all the luxuries of life which we have accumulated and totally useless for our salvation.

Today it is God who invites us to enter the Kingdom of God. He is the one who gathers us and unite us as his own people, and he wishes that we should be happy. He is offering us a life filled with love and joy. Is we wish to have this life, we have to live our lives according to his teachings.

Entering through a narrow gate is to live our life in a radical way. It is to leave behind our privileges, honors and claims that blocks the development of our lives. It is to give ourselves to others by our service and charity. This is accepting others as they are, welcoming them as our own and share ourselves with others.

Through the documents of the Church and through the saints of our days the Lord teaches us, gives us advice and shows us the right way.
Who is this door if not Jesus himself? He is our salvation. What place Jesus has in our daily lives? We need him. Without him we can never enter the kingdom of God. With him anything is possible.
Lord, the Kingdom of God is not reserved for a privileged few. It is open to everyone. Give us the grace so that we may enter into them one day through our eternal Door, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 1, 45-51)

Nathanaël lui demande : « Comment me connais-tu ?

Gospel text (Jn 1,45-51):

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, «We have found the one that Moses wrote about in the Law, and the prophets as well: He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth». Nathanael replied, «Can anything good come from Nazareth?». Philip said to him, «Come and see». When Jesus saw Nathanael coming, he said of him, «Here comes an Israelite, a true one; there is nothing false in him». Nathanael asked him, «How do you know me?». And Jesus said to him, «Before Philip called you, you were under the fig tree and I saw you». Nathanael answered, «Master, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!». But Jesus replied, «You believe because I said: ‘I saw you under the fig tree’. But you will see greater things than that. Truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man».

The message

Every call is an invitation and invites the other to discover something extra-ordinary. Philip was called by the Lord and he invites his friend Nathanael to join him. In fact Jesus has already called Nathanael while he was under the fig tree. Even in this bush like tree Nathanael couldn’t escape from the eyes of the Lord. Nathanael's love for God and his faith in the savior who is to come, has pushed him to go towards Jesus and Jesus welcomes this approach

However, it is in personal dialogue that Nathanael discovers that the Lord has already noticed his presence and called him indirectly to discover the savior and before the Lord he professes his faith. We need many Philip to initiate the people and lead them towards the Lord. Many are longing for the Lord and looking for some one like Phillip to invite them, 'come and see'. Can we be the one?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 19, 3-12)

Gospel text (Mt 19,3-12):

Some Pharisees approached Jesus. They wanted to test him and asked, «Is a man allowed to divorce his wife for any reason he wants?». Jesus replied, «Have you not read that in the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and he said: ‘Man has now to leave father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one body’? So they are no longer two but one body; let no one separate what God has joined».

They asked him, «Then, why did Moses command us to write a bill of dismissal in order to divorce?». Jesus replied, «Moses knew your stubborn heart, so he allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not so in the beginning. Therefore I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, unless it be for concubinage, and marries another, commits adultery».

The disciples said, «If that is the condition of a married man, it is better not to marry». Jesus said to them, «Not everybody can accept what you have just said, but only those who have received this gift. Some are born incapable of marriage. Some have been made that way by others. But there are some who have given up the possibility of marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who can accept it, accept it».

The message

All those who have tried to put the Lord in test found themselves caught by their own rhetoric. They have proved their hard heartedness which has forced Moses to compromise.

Jesus addresses something more important: the union of the creation. God willed that the people live together and experience the love of the Father. It is in this love that the young couples are united and it is in the same love that they discover the divine love received through the other. Man in his weakness and wickedness has manipulated this divine love and allowed the individualism to enter in to the life of marriage. Jesus by his presence re-establishes the unity of God’s union in the life of marriage. Anyone who works against this union is working against the will of the Father.

Jesus is proposing the celibate life only to the strong and to the called. He knows well that without the grace of His Father no one can live a meaningful celibate life. Let us pray for vocation

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 1, 39-56)

Amen.

Gospel text (Lc 1,39-56):

Mary then set out for a town in the Hills of Judah. She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with holy spirit, and giving a loud cry, said, «You are most blessed among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord's word would come true!».

And Mary said: «My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my savior! He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name! From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up those who are downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he promised our fathers, Abraham and his descendants forever». Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home.

Homily

Today we are celebrating the feast of Assumption of the blessed Mother of Jesus, a special honor that the Lord has privileged for his mother. She is the first one that the resurrected Lord has saved directly from the earth. She is the first on this earth who has received the Lord. Before she could conceive the Lord in her womb, she has already conceived Him in her expectation of the savior of Israel. In Jesus she has conceived the Joy and hope of the Father, the salvation of the humanity.

Today she shares this joy and hope with us. She shares this divine life with us. She shares her willingness to take our prayers to her son. The gospel tells us that it is Mary who takes the initiative. When she heard about her cousin, she rushed to help her. She won’t wait for us. As she has taken the initiative at Cana, she comes towards us to help us to find Jesus in our lives.

Today she is at home of Elizabeth. There is a meeting, a solemn meeting which creates an ambiance of joy, the joy not only in the hearts of these women, and Luke tells us that John rejoices. If he rejoices, then he has already seen the Lord. He has already met the Lord before anyone could identify Him. Blessed is the one who believes without seeing.

The child rejoices not only of this divine meeting of the savior, but also thanks to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Mary who is the witness of these divine events gives to the Holy Church the Magnificat. My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.

Mary is the only person who has faithfully followed the Lord from His birth to the Cross. It was she who listened and pondered his Word permanently even if she did not understand everything. If we want to, she will always be there to help us to identify and invite us to follow Christ in a radical way. As at Cana, she keeps telling us, "do everything he tells you. "

Today, she is the sign of the good news and she shares with us her joy as the Mother of Christ. In the Magnificat she reminds us, all that the Lord has made, "He helped his servant Israel, he has remembered his mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever. "In Jesus she found a God of love and a God who is faithful. It is in this love that she went to her cousin Elizabeth. She has listened and did the will of her Son she was carrying.

On this feast day we entrust her our intentions and our country. These days of crises and violence our country needs our prayers. Let us pray for the government and all responsible of our country. Our dear Mother will lead us to her Son Jesus Christ. When we address our prayers to the Virgin Mary, we address this to Christ through our Mother. On the feast day of the Assumption, we are in union with all the pilgrims of the world who are in Lourdes, Fatima etc.. May this festival grow in us the desire to imitate the Virgin Mary, May she helps us to in our confidence in prayer so that with this mother we may share a day with her glory. Amen.
