Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 21,28-32):

Abbé Jordi POU i Sabater

(Sant Jordi Desvalls, Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 21:23-27):

When he had come into the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?” Jesus said to them in reply, “I shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things. Where was John’s baptism from? Was it of heavenly or of human origin?” They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet.” So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” He himself said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Application

People who are seeking authority and power, wish to equalise themselves with Jesus, by knowing the source of His authority. Since the authority of Jesus has a salvific finality, Jesus won’t associate the source of His authority with of others. He will rightly ignore them and go ahead, by giving them an opportunity for a genuine question and answer. Shouldn’t we learn from Jesus, to deal with our adversaries?

We should however recognise that a sacred silence before a God of love and mercy don't do any charity to us, rather it will lock us in ourselves, so that the grace of reconciliation does not enter our hearts.  Lord, help me to speak, to speak with you, in all sincerity and openness. Help me, Lord, to listen to you than to speak. Lord, help me to speak less and to put into practice all that you tell me daily.

Action of the day: Use your authority and knowledge for the service of the humanity.

“What authority have you to act like this? Who gave you authority to do all this?”

Fr. Melcior QUEROL i Solà

(Ribes de Freser, Girona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel looks at two aspects of Jesus' personality: His shrewdness and His authority. Let's take his shrewdness first: He knows the heart of man deeply, he knows the inner life of all those who approach him. And when the High Priests and the authorities are sent to maliciously ask him: «What authority have you to act like this? Who gave you authority to do all this?» (Mt 21:23), Jesus, who knows their falseness, replies with another question: «When John began to baptize, was it a work of God, or was it merely something human?» (Mt 21:25). They do not know what to answer, because if they say that it came from God, they would be in contradiction with themselves for not having believed it, and if they say that it came from men they would be up against the people, who saw John as a prophet. They find themselves painted into a corner. Cunningly, with a simple question, Jesus has exposed their hypocrisy; He has given them the truth. And the truth is always uncomfortable, it can knock one off balance.

We should have the shrewdness of Jesus, to knock that which is a lie off its kilter. So many times the sons of darkness use all their astuteness to achieve more money, more power and more prestige; while we sons of light seem to have our asuteness and imagination somewhat asleep. Just in the same way that a worldly man uses his imagination to serve his interest, we Christians have to use our talents to serve God and the Gospel. For example: when one is before a person who speaks ill of the Church (as often happens), do we know how to respond with a reply that stops them in their tracks. Or, in a work environment, with a colleague who lives only for himself and “doesn´t give a damn”, do we know how to return good for evil? If we love him as Jesus did, our presence will be “uncomfortable” for him.

Jesus exercised his authority because of the deep knowledge he had of people and of situations. We are also called to have this authority. It is a gift that comes from above. The more we try to put everything in its place —the small things of every day— the more will we know how to deal with different people and different situations, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 21,23-27):

Abbé Melcior QUEROL i Solà

Gospel text

(Mt 17:10-13):

As they were coming down from the mountain, the disciples then asked Jesus, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” He said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

The Application

Jesus seems to ignore the question asked and give attention to the present status of life. Very often we like to know how things have gone, and why it has happened. These elements do help us to grow and to avoid the repetition of the same mistakes. Why God has said this? And why it has happened? We know to ask questions to the outside world, without looking for real answers, very often, which remain within ourselves.

We seek and want to know the divine will. Certainly, this is a good thing. However, there are still other elements that are brought to our hands, which we conveniently ignore; our human duty. In our behaviour, we are not just and in our actions, we are violent. It is not enough to seek and to know, we must put into practice all that we have already heard in our baptism.

Very often it is not a question of not knowing, but simply our lethargic and arrogant attitude that keeps us away from God's grace. God always gives us signs and opportunities to be converted and to recognise God's love. John offered us the baptism of conversion and like the contemporaries of his time, we continue to slaughter the innocent and persecute those who give us the signs of hope.

Action of the day: Learn to look inwardly.

“Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased”

Fr. Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal

(Castelldefels, Spain)

Today, we see Jesus talking with his disciples as they are coming down from the mountain, where they have just lived the Transfiguration. Our Lord hasn't taken up Peter's suggestion that they stay, and is answering the questions of the disciples as they descend. Those, who have just partaken momentarily in the glory of God, are surprised and don't understand how the Messiah could have come without the prophet Elijah coming first to prepare everything.

It turns out that the preparation has already been done. “but I tell you that Elijah has already come” (Mt 17:12). John the Baptist has prepared the way. But the men of the world don't recognize the men of God, nor do the prophets of the world recognize the prophets of God, nor do the arrogant of the world recognize the divinity of Jesus Christ.

A new way of looking and new heart are necessary if the ways of God are to be recognized, and if we are to respond with cheerfulness and generosity to the demanding calls of those He has sent. Not everybody is willing to understand it, let alone live it. What's more the way we live our lives and our plans might be in opposition to God's will. An opposition that could turn into a struggle against, and a rejection of, Our Father in Heaven.

We need to discover the intense love that informs God's plans for us and, if we are to be consistent with the faith and morality that Jesus reveals to us, we can't be surprised by the bad treatment, the slander and the persecutions. Being on the right track doesn't stop there being difficulties in life and He, despite the suffering, teaches us to keep on going.

We ask the Mother of Jesus, Queen of the Apostles, to intercede so that no one will be lacking a friend who, like the prophets, will bring them the Good News of salvation that is brought to us through the birth of Jesus Christ. We have the mission, you and me, to make sure that those people who cross their path with ours experience this Christmas in a more Christian way.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 17,10-13):

Abbé Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal

(Castelldefels, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 11:16-19):

Jesus spoke to the crowds: “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by her works.”

The Application

It is not difficult to identify the behaviour of the people around us and our own feelings and emotions,  when there is a problem. In truth we see three groups of people react to a problem. The first always sees the fault in others, it is him or her and the solution remains outside of him or her (the original sin). The second always sees in him and her the source of everything, that is me, so the solution is in him or her. And the third sees everything he or she can do to make the situation better. He or she will do it silently, without making any noise. Very often this kind of the people is with us and among us, and we will identify him or her very late in our lives. This people sees all that he or she can contribute, including their limitations.  At the same time, they identify the duties and abilities of others. Therefore, they are able to collaborate and involve others.

Today, Jesus invites us to review our lives, and how we act when faced with a failure in life. The critical comments are always in front of us. Like Jesus, we must learn to ignore them. If we faithfully apply the human intelligence that God has given us, we can easily understand the divine wisdom and gift of discernment that operates in us daily. Let our lives not be conditioned by the behaviour of others than by divine love.

Action of the day: Apply your intelligence and learn to act than react.

“To what shall I compare this generation?”

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we should be distraught before the Lord’s sigh: “To what shall I compare this generation?” (Mt 11:16). Jesus is overwhelmed by our heart, more often than not, nonconforming and ungrateful. We are never fulfilled; we are complaining all the time. We even dare to blame Him for all the things that disturb us.

“But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” (Mt 11:19): it suffices to just look at the Christmas mystery. But, what about us? How is our faith? Could it be that our complaints are actually harboring the nonexistence of our reply? A very appropriate query for the time of Advent!

God comes to our encounter, but man —especially the present-day man— hides out from Him. Some, as Herod, are really afraid of Him. Others are even harassed by his simple presence: “Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!” (Jn 19:15). Jesus “is the God-who-comes” (Benedict XVI) and we look like "the-man-who-goes away": “He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him” (Jn 1:11).

Why do we run away? Because of our lack of meekness. Saint John the Baptist recommended us to "dwindle". And the Church reminds us so, every time the Advent comes. We must, therefore, become as little children to be able to understand and receive the "Little God". He appears in front of us with the humility of his swaddling-clothes: never before a “God-wrapped-in-swaddling clothes” had been preached! We project a ridiculous image before God when we try to conceal ourselves with pretexts and dishonest explanations. Already at the dawn of humanity, Adam blamed Eve; Eve blamed the snake..., after all the centuries gone by, we remain just the same.

Jesus-God, however, is coming: in the cold and the poverty of Bethlehem he neither admonished nor rebuked us. On the contrary! He begins to load his small shoulders with the weight of all our faults. Should we, then, be afraid of Him? Will our apologies be truly worth before this "Little-God"? “God’s sign is the Baby: we learn to live with him and to practice with him that humility of renunciation that belongs to the very essence of love” (Benedict XVI).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 11,16-19):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

A mort! Crucifie-le!» (Jn 19,15).

Gospel text

(Mt 11,11-15):

Jesus said to the crowds, “Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force. All the prophets and the law prophesied up to the time of John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

The Application

He who has ears, let him hear! This is an important message from the mouth of the Lord. It reveals to us the importance that God gave to John and his message. Today, we are invited to listen to John the Baptist and to see in him the divine fulfilment. John, by his faithfulness to the mission entrusted to him, announces to us the presence of God, a promised closeness that we have not recognised.

Because of our lack of recognition, this Kingdom of God has suffered much violence and is still being repeated today. We did not learn from John to cry out against injustice. We did not learn from John to act in a non-violent way. In truth we do not listen to his message of conversion. The Advent season invites us to listen to him and to be converted. Through our conversion and positive engagement, God will fulfil the promise we heard in the first reading.

Action of the day: Be converted and listen to the Word of God.

“The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force”

Fr. Ignasi FABREGAT i Torrents

(Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel speaks of John the Baptist, the Messiah's Precursor, he who has come to prepare the paths of the Lord. He will stay with us until the sixteenth day, when the first part of Advent comes to an end.

John is a resolute man, who is very aware of the value of things, who is conscious of the fact that struggle is necessary to improve and be holy. That's why Jesus says: “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.” (Mt 11:12). The “unyielding” ones are those who are unyielding to themselves: Do I struggle to believe that the Lord loves me too? Do I sacrifice myself to “make myself small”? Do I make the effort to be conscious of the fact that I am my Father's son and live accordingly?

Saint Therese of Lisieux refers to these words from Jesus saying something which can help us in our personal and intimate conversation with the Son of Man: “It is you, oh poverty!, my first sacrifice; I'll be together with you until I die! I know that the athlete, once at the stadium, rids himself of everything in order to run. You, worldly people, can savor the pity and anguish that come from the vanity of your bitter fruits; I, joyous, will get the prize of triumph from poverty”. And me, why do I complain as soon as I sense that I lack something I consider necessary? I wish I could see things as clearly as Therese in all aspects of my life!

In a very mysterious way, Jesus says to us today: “And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” (Mt 11:14-15). What does He mean? He wants to make it clear to us that John was his true forerunner, who carried out the same mission as Elijah, according to the belief, which people at that time had that the prophet Elijah was supposed to come back before the Messiah.

Texte de l'Évangile
(Mt 11,11-15):

Gospel text

(Lk 1:26-38):

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

The Application

How can I understand the mystery and apply this feast and its meaning in my daily life?

Faith: I believe that all that Mary received is still available to us all. Not the same grace and not the same mission, but like her, a collaboration and participation in the divine will. God needs us, even today. Just as Mary was prepared for one mission, God also prepares each and every one of us for another mission. From the moment of Mary's birth, God was very active in her, however she was not aware of God's work in her. He is still active in us today, even though I don't understand it. In due course, God will come to me, reveal his plan and entrust me with his mission. I pray intensely that on that day I will be able to say, like Mary, "YES, thy will be done.

The Immaculate Conception: This is not something that Mary prayed for or asked for. She was chosen, (called), a grace granted (consecrated) and that the child would find a worthy place in her, (sent). Even if God has not granted this place to all of us, through the sacrament of baptism, God has already chosen, consecrated and sent us. Like Mary, may we be faithful to the mission entrusted to us, even if we do not understand at present moment, all the details.

Mary's encounter with the Angel: God always gives us the possibility to have the same encounter with his angel, especially with the guardian angel, in a concrete and daily way. Very often we are like Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. We do not believe in this all-powerful God, who can move the mountain for us. Mary simply believed in the Word spoken by the angel Gabriel.

The sign of assurance: Mary did not ask for a sign, yet God chose to give her a sign. This sign had a purpose, for Mary to discover her divine Motherhood, through the joy of her cousin Elizabeth and the joy of her child who joyfully burst forth in her. It’s all happened in very human way, in an ordinary human encounter. Mary's eagerness, after hearing the good news, enabled her to discover them herself, in a personal way. This readiness is not found in us, and obviously we do not have the same resentment. We do not put the Word we hear into practice. Blessed rather is she who hears the Word and puts it into practice.

Action of the day: Believe that God is active in you and act.

“And coming to her, he said, ‘Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.’”

Today, the Gospel plays a chord made up of three notes. Three notes which, in our society, are not always that well-tuned: one note of doing, one of friendship and another one of coherence of life. Nowadays, we all have very busy lives, but, do we have a plan? Today, when we are navigating through a world of communications, are we capable of being alone in our own company for a while? Today, in the information era, are we letting it shape who we are?

Mary, a young woman “betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David” (Lk 1:28) has a plan, of human proportions, evidently. However, God comes into her life to bestow on her another project... of divine proportions. Today, He wants to come into our lives too, to give our everyday human tasks divine proportions.

“Do not be afraid, Mary” (Lk 1:30). Let's not do things just any way! Lest the addiction of "doing things" hides a void. Marriage, a life of servitude, our profession, should not mean a leap in the dark. “Full of grace, the Lord is with you” (Lk 1:28). A presence that accompanies and provides a meaning. Trust in God, which —indirectly— brings us to trust others. Friendship with God that renews our friendship with others, too.

Today, when we are confronted with so many stimuli, often opposed, it is necessary to give shape and unity to our life. Saint Louis Mary Grignion says “Mary is the living mold of God” and explains: “A sculptor can make a statue in two ways: The first way [the chisel] is long and involved and open to all sorts of accidents. It only needs a faulty stroke of the chisel or hammer to ruin the whole work. The second [a mold] is quick, easy, straightforward, almost effortless and inexpensive, but the mold must be perfect and true to life and the material must be easy to handle and offer no resistance.” Mary is the perfect mold. Do we turn to Her as being easy to handle material?
