Gospel text

(Jn 11:45-56):

Today's Gospel (Jn 11:45-56) Many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what Jesus had done began to believe in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation.” But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing, nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish.” He did not say this on his own, but since he was high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God. So from that day on they planned to kill him.

So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples.

Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before Passover to purify themselves. They looked for Jesus and said to one another as they were in the temple area, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast? ” For the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should inform them, so that they might arrest him.

The Prayer

Lord, thank you, thank you for the passion, because your passion gives us the hope to live our lives. It is in this passion that you have expressed your love for your Father. It is in this same passion that you invite your beloved ones to express their love for you. Once we understand the inner meaning and the iron like formation or transformation that you desire in us, through our daily passion, the pains of this passion become the very medicine to heal our inner wounds. It helps us to accept our daily crosses easily. You make us learn through these passions, that your Father is always active and nothing happens without Him. It is true that some of our contemporaries are not righteous, yet I know that your Father will bring us out of every kind of wickedness they plan against us. Help us Lord to accept our daily crosses joyfully and courageously. May our crosses gather your people together as a holy nation, Amen.

Action of the day: Cherish your passion, as a special gift from God.

"Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God"

Fr. Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano

(Cervera, Lleida, Spain)

Today, while on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus is aware he is persecuted, harassed, sentenced, because the greatest and newest his revelation has been —the announcement of the Kingdom of God— the greatest and wider has been too the division and the opposition He has found amongst his audience (cf. Jn 11:45-46).

The negative words by Caiaphas, “it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish.” (Jn 11:50), will be positively assumed by Jesus in the redemption performed for us. Jesus, God's only begotten Son, dies in the Cross for the love of all of us! He dies to make true the Father's plan, that is, “but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God” (Jn 11:52).

And this is the wonder and the creativity of our God! Caiaphas, with his sentence (“It is better to have one man die...”) and out of his hate, does nothing else but to try to eliminate an idealist; God Father, instead, by sending his Son out of his love for us, does something wonderful: to transform that malevolent sentence into a work of redemptive love, because to God Father, each man is worth all the blood shed by Jesus Christ!

One week from today, we shall sing —in solemn vigil— the Easter Proclamation. With this wonderful prayer, the Church praises the original sin. And it does not do it because the Church ignores its gravity, but because God —in his infinite goodness— has done some deeds as a response to man's sin. That is, in the face of the “original disgust”, He has replied with the Incarnation, with his personal immolation and institution of the Eucharist. This is why, next Saturday, our liturgy will sing: “O, admirable condescendence of your goodness! O, immeasurable predilection which you have loved us with! O, lucky guilt, that has deserved us so great a Redeemer!”

If only our sentences, words and actions could be no more a deterrent for the evangelization, since we, too, have been requested by Christ to gather the scattered children of God: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 11,45-56):

Abbé Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano

(Cervera, Lleida, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 10:31-42):

The Jews picked up rocks to stone Jesus. Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?” The Jews answered him, “We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy. You, a man, are making yourself God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, ‘You are gods”‘? If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came, and Scripture cannot be set aside, can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” Then they tried again to arrest him; but he escaped from their power.

He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained. Many came to him and said, “John performed no sign, but everything John said about this man was true.” And many there began to believe in him.

The Application

For me personally, the way we look and observe, plays an important role in our daily life, because it provides the necessary elements for intelligence, for a good discernment that will end with a right decision for execution. If this look is not good, we will make a radical mistake, unfortunately the story will end with an act, in all sincerity, against our own will. Fortunately, faith helps us to look at the world and its people, (with the help of our intelligence and obviously with grace,) the invisible and impalpable elements, where the truth is to be found. Its here we identify the way God works in and through us. A person of faith, will see in everything, a divine project. Thus, he or she has something to contribute, not to judge or accuse others. Even at the point of death, their hope in the Lord doesn’t get diminished.

We can verify this in today's Gospel, especially how Jesus sees the world and how his contemporaries refuse the truth. Yet if they wanted to see the divine works, they were right in front of them. Some of us hold a partial truth and stand firm with that truth, without checking it, with a look of faith, with a spiritual support that God has already granted us in Baptism.  Let us learn to look at the world with compassion and love. Then, we will witness, not only the divine presence, but also the passion of our brothers and sisters.  Next Friday we will celebrate the passion of the Lord. I invite you, therefore, to live it now by recognising the signs that God gives us, through the John Baptists, who are still visibly present in our community, calling for conversion. If we learn to look everything in Faith, this look will certainly help us to be converted, to become true children of God.

Action of the day: Be patient and hopeful.

“For which of these are you trying to stone me?”

Fr. Carles ELÍAS i Cao

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, Friday, when there is only one week to go to commemorate our Lord's death, the Gospel presents us with the motives of his condemnation. Jesus tries to show the truth to the Jews, but they consider him to be a blasphemer and want to stone him. Jesus tells them about the works He is doing, the works of his Father that bestow credit to him, about why He can use the title of the “Son of God”... Nevertheless, He speaks from a level which is difficult to assimilate by his adversaries: “to be with the truth”, “to listen to his voice”... He speaks to them from the submission and commitment to his Person that make Jesus to be known and loved —“Rabbi, where are you staying?” (Jn 1:38)—, his disciples asked him at the beginning of his ministry. But, it all seems pointless: what Jesus is trying to say is so big they cannot fully understand it; only the small and humble ones will understand him, for the Kingdom is hidden from the wise and the learned.

Jesus struggles to present arguments that may be acceptable for the Jews, but to no avail. In fact, He will die because He is saying the truth about Himself, because He is faithful to Himself, to his identity and to his mission. As a prophet, He will present a claim for conversion and will be rejected, a new face of God and will be spitted at, a new fraternity and He will be forsaken.

Once more, our Lord's Cross emerges with all its strength as a true banner, as the one and only unquestionably reason: “O admirable virtue of the Holy Cross! O ineffable glory of the Father! We can see in it our Lord's Tribunal, the judgment of this World and the power of Christ Crucified. O, yes, my Lord: you have drawn towards you all things when, all day long you have held out your hands to an obstinate and rebellious people (cf. Is 65:2), the whole Universe will realize it had to pay tribute to your majesty!” (Saint Leo the Great). Jesus had to escape to the other side of the Jordan and those that truly believe in him went to him quite willing to follow him and listen to Him.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 10,31-42):

Abbé Carles ELÍAS i Cao

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Oh oui Seigneur!

Gospel text

(Jn 8:51-59):

Jesus said to the Jews: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.” So the Jews said to him, “Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word. Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.” So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.

The Application

We have to accept in total humility, if we would have being there, we wouldn’t have understood all that Jesus has said at that time. Jesus is speaking of divine mysteries, to the mortal world, which hasn’t even understood, its own existence and the meaning of life, other than biological living and dying. Without the grace of God, we can’t understand the divine realities. Even today, we haven’t mastered the mystery of Trinity, in its totality. Personally, I even don’t dare to understand. For me, I will satisfy myself in understanding the commandment of love and applying it in my daily life. I know that it is already a herculean task for me.

The dialogue between Jesus and the Jews makes us discover that faith is a gift and not a merit. Do we have to understand everything in details? Not necessary. However, we must always remain open and welcoming, so that the Word of God can penetrate and work in us. Jesus invites us to live in the present with joy rather than remain nostalgic for the past.

Action of the day: Surrender before the divine mystery.

“Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad”

Fr. Enric CASES i Martín

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, Saint John places us before Jesus' revelation in the Temple. Our Saviour reveals something unknown to the Jews: that Abraham looked forward and rejoiced when he saw Jesus' day. They all knew God had made a promise to Abraham, by assuring him of great promises of salvation for his seed. However, they were unaware of how far God's light could reach. Christ reveals them that Abraham did see the Messiah in the day of Yahweh, which Jesus calls my day.

In this revelation, Jesus appears as having God's eternal vision. But, above all, He appears as someone preexistent and present in Abraham's time. Later, in the heat of the discussion, when the Jews said to Jesus that He is not yet fifty years old, He tells them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.” (Jn 8:58). This is a notorious statement of his divinity, which they could perfectly understand, and which they could have also believed, had they better known the Father. The expression “I am” is part of the holy tetragram Yahweh revealed to Moses in mount Sinai.

Christianity is much more than a collection of high moral norms, as can be perfect love, or even, forgiveness. Christianity is faith in one person. Jesus Christ is True God and True Man; “Perfect God and Perfect Man”, says the Athanasian Symbol. Saint Hilary of Poitiers writes in a beautiful prayer: “Give us, therefore, a way to express ourselves in an adequate and dignified manner, to enlighten our intelligence, and make also our words to express our faith, that is, that we, who, through the prophets and the Apostles, had come to know You God Father and the unique Lord Jesus Christ, may also celebrate You as our God, in which there is no unicity of person and confess your Son, in everything equal to You.”

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 8,51-59):

Abbé Enric CASES i Martín

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 8:31-42):

Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free. I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me, because my word has no room among you. I tell you what I have seen in the Father’s presence; then do what you have heard from the Father.”

They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your father!” So they said to him, “We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me.

The Application

Jesus addresses the Jews who believed in Him and especially those who claimed to be God's children. He invites them to be faithful to His commandment of love, as a sign of the divine presence. It is in this love that they can love and serve God. This love will never propose violence as a solution. He helps them to understand their contradictions,  that they are not consistent with what they think about themselves to what they are. There is a big gap. This look of Jesus is not a look of judgement, but a look of love and compassion. Since they do not have a heart filled with love and compassion, they are no longer able to recognise this divine love. To better understand divine love, we must be true lovers of God

Today's Gospel invites us to review our lives. Are we truly God's children and are our actions truly worthy of God? If we want to discover or recognise the truth, we must be able to look at our actions, our words and our intentions, with a critical eye. Are they full of love and compassion? Jesus tells us that this truth will save us.

Action of the day: Avoid violence.

“If God were your Father, you would love me”

Fr. Givanildo dos SANTOS Ferreira

(Brasilia, Brazil)

Today, the Lord directs harsh words to the Jews. Not to some Jews, but precisely to those who embraced the faith: Jesus said “to those Jews who believed in him” (Jn 8:31). This dialogue of Jesus reflects, without any doubt, the beginning of those difficulties caused by the Jewish Christians in the first hours of the Church.

As they were descendants of Abraham according to their kinship, such Jesus’ disciples considered themselves superior not only to Gentiles who lived away from the faith, but also better than any non-Jewish disciples of the same faith. They said: “We are descendants of Abraham” (Jn 8:33); “Our father is Abraham” (v.39); “We have one Father, God” (v.41).

Despite being disciples of Jesus, we have the impression that Jesus meant nothing for them, nothing that could improve whom they already owned. But it is there where they all made a big mistake. True sons are not those by physical descent but the heirs of the promise, that is, those who believe (cf. Rom 9:6-8). Without faith in Jesus it is not possible for anyone to reach Abraham’s promise. That being so, among the disciples, “there is neither Jews nor Greeks; neither slave nor free; nor is there man and woman, for they are all brothers because of Baptism” (cf. Gal 3:27-28).

Let us not be seduced by spiritual pride. Jewish considered themselves superior to other Christians. It is not necessary to speak, here, of separated brethren. But let us rather think of us. How often some Catholics consider themselves better than other Catholics just because they follow this or that movement, or because they observe this or that discipline, they abide by this or to that liturgical trend. Some, because they are rich; others, because they studied more. Some, because they hold important positions; others, because they come from noble families. “I would like that each one should feel the joy of being Christian.... God guides his Church, He sustains it always, especially at times of difficulty” (Benedict XVI).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 8,31-42):

Gospel text

(Jn 8,21-30):

Jesus said to the Pharisees: “I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “He is not going to kill himself, is he, because he said, ‘Where I am going you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.”

So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “What I told you from the beginning. I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world.” They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father. So Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.

The meditation

Lord, help me to understand your words. I use many words in my prayers and I don't even understand the meanings of my prayers. Believing in you is synonymous with believing in the cross, the cross as a path to resurrection. The cross helps me to understand the depth of your love, the love of your Father. Why, Lord, did you choose the Cross to make us understand your love? Why, Lord, the crosses of our day are difficult to bear? I try to understand the pain of your Father in your Cross and how much He would have suffered, when you cried towards Him.  Why don't I understand your pain, because of my sins? Help me Lord, that I bring no cross to you and that I may learn to carry my daily crosses, Amen.

Action of the day: Learn to carry your daily cross.

“When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM”

Today, the fifth Tuesday of Lent, only one week away from the contemplation of our Lord's Passion, He invites us to look at him in anticipation while redeeming us from the Cross: “Our High Priest is Christ Jesus, his precious body is our sacrifice that He immolated on the altar of the Cross for the salvation of all people” (Saint John Fisher).

“When you have lifted up the Son of Man” (Jn 8:28). The Crucified Christ, indeed,—“lifted up” Christ!— is the great and definite sign of the Father's love towards the fallen Humankind. His open arms, stretched out between Heaven and Earth, outline the indelible sign of His friendship with us, men. By seeing Him like this, lifted up before our sinful glance, we shall realize that He is (cf. Jn 8:28), and then, as those Jews that were listening to him, we shall also believe in Him.

Only the friendship of He, who is fully acquainted with the Cross, may provide us with the needed connaturality to get us into the Redemptor's heart. Claiming a Gospel without the Cross, bare of any Christian sense of mortification, or infected by the pagan and naturalist ambiance which prevent us to understand the redeeming suffering values, would place us in the terrible conjuncture of having to hear from Christ's lips: —After all, why should I go on speaking to you?

That our serene and contemplative look of the Cross, be a question to the Crucified, whereby, wordless and noiseless, we tell him: “Who are you?” (Jn 8:25). And He will answer that He is “the way, the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6), the Stock, which we, poor vine shoots, if not united to, will not be able to bear any fruit, because only him has words of eternal life. And thus, if we do not believe that He is, we shall die by our sins. However, we shall live, despite everything, and we shall already live in this world a Heavenly life, if we take from Him the joyous certitude that the Father is with us, that He will never leave us alone. Thus, we shall imitate the Son by doing always that which pleases the Father.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 8,21-30):
