Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 5, 17-30)

Gospel text (Jn 5,17-30):

Jesus said to the Jews, «My Father goes on working and so do I». And the Jews tried all the harder to kill him, for Jesus not only broke the Sabbath observance, but also made himself equal with God, calling him his own Father.

Jesus said to them, «Truly, I assure you, the Son cannot do anything by himself, but only what he sees the Father do. And whatever He does, the Son also does. The Father loves the Son and shows him everything He does; and He will show him even greater things than these, so that you will be amazed. As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to whom He wills. In the same way the Father judges no one, for He has entrusted all judgment to the Son, and He wants all to honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever ignores the Son, ignores as well the Father who sent him. Truly, I say to you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; and there is no judgment for him because he has passed from death to life.

»Truly, the hour is coming and has indeed come, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and, on hearing it, will live. For the Father has life in himself and He has given to the Son also to have life in himself. And He has empowered him as well to carry out Judgment, for He is a son of man. Do not be surprised at this: the hour is coming when all those lying in tombs will hear my voice and come out; those who have done good shall rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. I can do nothing of myself, and I need to hear Another One to judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will, but the will of him who sent me».

The message

The mystery of Jesus’ divinity is once again put forward for us to associate our humanity with the Father. It is in and through Jesus that the humanity can participate in the divinity of God. Jesus is calling each and every one of us to be united with Him as He is united with the Father. The Lenten season gives us once such occasion to improve and qualify our relation with God.

The Trinity is our best model of unity without losing our personal identity. Many at times we are forced to leave behind our personal identity, to get associated with the common identity. Today Jesus is calling us to get our original identity as the children of God, and remain always so through our association with Jesus.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 5, 1-16)

Gospel text (Jn 5,1-3.5-16): There was a feast of the Jews and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now, by the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem, there is a pool (called Bethzatha in Hebrew) surrounded by five galleries. In these galleries lay a multitude of sick people -blind, lame and paralyzed. There was a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus saw him, and since he knew how long this man had been lying there, He said to him, «Do you want to be healed?». And the sick man answered, «Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; so while I am still on my way, another steps down before me». Jesus then said to him, «Stand up, take your mat and walk». And at once the man was healed, and he took up his mat and walked.

Now that day happened to be the Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had just been healed, «It is the Sabbath and the Law doesn't allow you to carry your mat». He answered them, «The one who healed me said to me: Take up your mat and walk». They asked him, «Who is the one who said to you: Take up your mat and walk?». But the sick man had no idea who it was who had cured him, for Jesus had slipped away among the crowd that filled the place. Afterwards Jesus met him in the Temple court and told him, «Now you are well; don't sin again, lest something worse happen to you». And the man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. So the Jews persecuted Jesus because He performed healings like that on the Sabbath.

The message

There many such people around us like this sick man in our society. The Lenten season gives us the courage to open our eyes and see their sufferings. There are many who are still longing to hear from us, “Do you want to be healed” or “can I do something for you?”

We avoid such wonderful occasion to serve people because of the elites in our society who very often become judgmental and insensible to the sufferings of these people. Jesus is asking us to imitate the way He looks at people and the way He responds to the need of these people, fully ignoring the negative comments that the elite society generously accords to Him. Let this Lenten season gives us a new light to go beyond the visible and reach to the invisible.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 4, 43-54)

Gospel text (Jn 4,43-54): Jesus left for Galilee. Jesus himself said that no prophet is recognized in his own country. Yet the Galileans welcomed him when He arrived, because of all the things He had done in Jerusalem during the Festival and which they had seen. For they, too, had gone to the feast. Jesus went back to Cana of Galilee where He had changed the water into wine.

At Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill, and when he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and asked him to come and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Jesus said, «Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe!». The official said, «Sir, come down before my child dies». And Jesus replied, «Go, your son is living».

The man had faith in the word that Jesus spoke to him and went his way. He was already going down the hilly road when his servants met him with this news, «Your son has recovered!». So he asked them at what hour the child had begun to recover and they said to him, «The fever left him yesterday in the afternoon about one o'clock». And the father realized that it was the time when Jesus told him, «Your son is living». And he became a believer, he and all his family. Jesus performed this second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee.

The message

The Lenten season is inviting us to come back to the source of life, Jesus Christ. It is He who is taking the initiative to come to us. Like this official we have to respond to Him positively, by welcoming Him in our hearts.

While this world which seeks always proofs and signs, this official takes a step further by insisting Jesus’ presence in a difficult moment of life without expecting any sign from the Lord. The Lord puts him in test by telling him that his son is already cured.

Without disturbing Jesus further, he goes back to his home, believing that he will find his son alive. He is not disappointed. All those who have put their hope in the Lord, have never left without an answer. There were times where continue to insist the Lord to obey us, by compelling Him to come down with us. Do we have the courage to listen to Him and believe Him?

Amen

Homily

We are in the fourth Sunday of Lent and we meditated on the theme , "Jesus is the light of the world who came to remove all kinds of blindness , ignorance, etc. . To day the universal Church offers us the text of the healing of a blind man . The text tells us that he was born blind not only physically, but also spiritually.

We who claim to see everything very clearly, fail like the prophet by seeing the external signs and worldly strength. Our hardheartedness and ignorance have made us blind to the living witnesses of God’s presence in our lives. How can we discover our own spiritual blindness ? The man of the Gospel of the day shows us our own blindness . This man has seen the Lord , yet he did not take the initiative to go to meet the person who him a new life filled with light and hope. Before the Council of Jerusalem he discovers his own blindness , his ignorance of the truth , his lack of initiative to go and meet Jesus. He feels internally the missed opportunity of knowing Jesus. In front of the counsel, he tries to witness an unknown person. The questions have pushed him to go beyond all that he see and internally he begins to discover Jesus as a divine person , a person who has given him a light that illuminates his mind and soul. Now he already sees in Jesus a man of God, a man of kindness , a man of light. Yet before the Lord humbly accepts his ignorance. "And who is he, Lord , that I may believe in him? " Jesus comes to meet him, saying , " "You see , and it is he who speaks to you. " .
The whole story is centered on the identity of Jesus. Who is this man who heals the blind. Today what and who is He for me? Our holy father Francis invites us to witness the joy to live this Gospel and to proclaim . The season of Lent invites us to rediscover Jesus and really dedicate ourselves to him , its mystery and profess our act of faith.
Living Lent is to return to the Lord and receive the Light that comes from him. This light is that of faith . With this light, we learn to see people and events through the eyes of God.
The blind from birth found the Lord through an internal process. The same person who has previously said he did not know the person who healed him bear witness saying he was a prophet. Like him, we will also become witnesses of Christ , if we keep our heart open so that the light of Christ penetrates our deepest hearts. This light is capable of producing in us all that is good and right and truth in our daily lives. With this light we can proclaim together as this blind man our faith with joy and pride, "YES I believe . Amen

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 18, 9-14)

Gospel text (Lc 18,9-14): Jesus told another parable to some persons fully convinced of their own righteousness, who looked down on others: «Two men went up to the Temple to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and said: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people, grasping, crooked, adulterous, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give the tenth of all my income to the Temple’. In the meantime the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast saying: ‘O God, be merciful to me, a sinner’. I tell you, when this man went down to his house, he had been set right with God, but not the other. For whoever makes himself out to be great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be raised».

The message

The more we pray, the more we will feel the need of God in our daily life. Prayer helps us to be united with God permanently. It is like a dialogue where two persons listen each other and respond. Thus indirectly it is a means of communication. Many at times our prayers get settled with a demand and easily we are discouraged. Once we learn to listen to God, there will be no more demands, because in prayer we will realize that God has already exhausted our prayers, even before we have realized our own need.

If the prayer of this tax collector is heard, it is because of his humility and his capacity to surrender fully to God. Let us look the way we pray and what kind of prayer we do.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 12, 28-34)

Gospel text (Mc 12,28b-34): A teacher of the Law came up and asked to Jesus, «Which commandment is the first of all?». Jesus answered, «The first is: ‘Hear, Israel! The Lord, our God, is One Lord; and you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength’. And after this comes another one: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’. There is no commandment greater than these two».

The teacher of the Law said to him, «Well spoken, Master; you are right when you say that he is one and there is no other. To love him with all our heart, with all our understanding and with all our strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves is more important than any burnt offering or sacrifice». Jesus approved this answer and said, «You are not far from the kingdom of God». But after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

The message

Jesus right from the beginning of His ministry was very clear about the way to freedom and joy on this earthly life: love of God and love of the neighbor. It is in this divine love that God offered the incarnation to the world. It is in this same love God asks His people to come back to Him.

Lenten season always ask the faithful to decorate their daily activities with this divine love. Jesus has repeatedly said that the divine love is the priority of His mission and that people recognize this divine love through His presence in this world. Every Christian is called to live this love. The sacred readings do help us to live our life fully in this divine love. If we read these scriptures daily and put everything that she says in practice, we will able to live a life filled with love.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 5, 17-19)

Gospel text (Mt 5,17-19): Jesus said to his disciples, «Do not think that I have come to remove the Law and the Prophets. I have not come to remove but to fulfill them. I tell you this: as long as heaven and earth last, not the smallest letter or stroke of the Law will change until all is fulfilled. So then, whoever breaks the least important of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be the least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys them and teaches others to do the same will be great in the kingdom of heaven».

The message

The life and the deeds of Jesus seem to raise certain questions about Jesus and His adherence to the Law of Moses. Jesus through His life explains to us that He is to accomplish the Law of God in its letter and spirit. He has shown us that the original Law that God has handed over to Moses has its foundation in divine Love and by keeping this love in their personal relationship man can easily love God. This love goes beyond any human law.

Since God’s Kingdom is filled with divine love expressed in daily human relationship, every person who keeps this divine love in his personal relationship will be considered as a privileged member in this Kingdom. Lenten season gives us this wonderful occasion and invites us to live this love as perfect as possible in our daily life.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 4, 24-30)

Gospel text (Lc 4,24-30): Jesus added, «No prophet is honored in his own country. Truly, I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens withheld rain for three years and six months and a great famine came over the whole land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow of Zarephath, in the country of Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha, the prophet, and no one was healed except Naaman, the Syrian».

On hearing these words, the whole assembly became indignant. They rose up and brought him out of the town, to the edge of the hill on which Nazareth is built, intending to throw him down the cliff. But he passed through their midst and went his way.

The message

Today the deep message for me is not the respect of the prophet, but the confidence that these important biblical person have shown in their difficult times. Many at times when we are troubled and disappointed, we are tempted to close ourselves and show our back to God, the source of our life.

Let us look at the difficulty of Naaman to obey a simple act that the prophet has proposed to him. Even in his hardheartedness, he was ready to listen to the servant. We should learn to take courage and go to the enemy’s land and open ourselves to the counsels of our servants like people who surround us.

This poor widow could put all her confidence in Prophet Elijah, an unknown man. It is not easy to believe an unknown person and share your last piece of bread of life to someone who is having lesser suffering comparing ours. She could do both. Lenten season is a wonderful opportunity to put our confidence in the Lord and listen to Him through our brothers and sister. By this behavior, we will never reject the prophets in our society.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 15, 1-3.11-32)

Gospel text (Lc 15,1-3.11-32): Tax collectors and sinners were seeking the company of Jesus, all of them eager to hear what He had to say. But the Pharisees and the scribes frowned at this, muttering: «This man welcomes sinners and eats with them». So Jesus told them this parable: «There was a man with two sons. The younger said to his father: ‘Give me my share of the estate’. So the father divided his property between them. Some days later, the younger son gathered all his belongings and started off for a distant land where he squandered his wealth in loose living. Having spent everything, he was hard pressed when a severe famine broke out in that land. So he hired himself out to a well-to-do citizen of that place and was sent to work on a pig farm. So famished was he that he longed to fill his stomach even with the food given to the pigs, but no one offered him anything. Finally coming to his senses, he said: ‘How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will get up and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against God and before you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me then as one of your hired servants’. With that thought in mind he set off for his father's house.

»He was still a long way off when his father caught sight of him. His father was so deeply moved with compassion that he ran out to meet him, threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. The son said: ‘Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you. I no longer deserve to be called your son...’. But the father turned to his servants: ‘Quick! Bring out the finest robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and kill it. We shall celebrate and have a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found’. And the celebration began.

»Meanwhile, the elder son had been working in the fields. As he returned and was near the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what it was all about. The servant answered: ‘Your brother has come home safe and sound, and your father is so happy about it that he has ordered this celebration and killed the fattened calf’. The elder son became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and pleaded with him. The indignant son said: ‘Look, I have slaved for you all these years. Never have I disobeyed your orders. Yet you have never given me even a young goat to celebrate with my friends. Then when this son of yours returns after squandering your property with loose women, you kill the fattened calf for him’. The father said: ‘My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But this brother of yours was dead, and has come back to life. He was lost and is found. And for that we had to rejoice and be glad’».

The message

The lesions that we can learn from this story are

Have courage to go back to the Father. He is ready to forgive each and every one us. We can’t afford to remain in a sinful life for a long time, as long as we have a loving Father.

If we take courage and go back to the Father, He will rise us up and will reestablish us as His own children.

Like the elder son, we may be tempted to revolt. But after the explication of the Father, we should learn to forgive and go further.

God gives us full freedom of choice. Like this elder son, let us not remain outside while the feasting is going on inside. We should take courage and go inside.

Let us not reject any sinner, and if we continue to do so, we may provoke the anger of God against us.

Gospel text (Mt 21,33-43.45-46): Jesus said to the chief priests and elders, «Listen to another example: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a hole for the winepress, built a watchtower, leased the vineyard to tenants and then went to a distant country. When harvest time came, the landowner sent his servants to the tenants to collect his share of the harvest. But the tenants seized his servants, beat one, killed another and stoned another. Again the owner sent more servants, but they were treated in the same way. Finally, he sent his son, thinking: ‘They will respect my son’. But when the tenants saw the son, they thought: ‘This is the one who is to inherit the vineyard. Let us kill him and his inheritance will be ours’. So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now, what will the owner of the vineyard do with the tenants when he comes?».

They said to him, «He will bring those evil to an evil end, and lease the vineyard to others who will pay him in due time». And Jesus replied, «Have you never read what the Scriptures say?: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the keystone. This was the Lord's doing; and we marvel at it’. Therefore I say to you: the kingdom of heaven will be taken from you and given to a people who will yield a harvest».

When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard these parables, they realized that Jesus was referring to them. They would have arrested him, but they were afraid of the crowd who regarded him as a prophet.

The message

God has given His creation to the humanity, so that the human beings may profit from the fruits of the earth, while honoring the Creator, who has given us not only the creation, but also the liberty to discern. In our arrogance and individualism, if we fail to recognize the source of our happiness and joy, we may radically fail to realize the wonderful work that God is doing through us. We will be tempted to steal the due honor that God deserves from human work.

Today’s gospel reminds us of our arrogance and our unfaithfulness towards the faithful God. The Lenten season gives us this occasion to be humble and give the due honor which God deserves. If we are faithful, God is capable of making miracle from our weaknesses. Let us learn to trust the Lord.
