Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 4, 24-30)

Gospel text (Lc 4,24-30): Jesus added, «No prophet is honored in his own country. Truly, I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens withheld rain for three years and six months and a great famine came over the whole land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow of Zarephath, in the country of Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha, the prophet, and no one was healed except Naaman, the Syrian».

On hearing these words, the whole assembly became indignant. They rose up and brought him out of the town, to the edge of the hill on which Nazareth is built, intending to throw him down the cliff. But he passed through their midst and went his way.

The message

Today the deep message for me is not the respect of the prophet, but the confidence that these important biblical person have shown in their difficult times. Many at times when we are troubled and disappointed, we are tempted to close ourselves and show our back to God, the source of our life.

Let us look at the difficulty of Naaman to obey a simple act that the prophet has proposed to him. Even in his hardheartedness, he was ready to listen to the servant. We should learn to take courage and go to the enemy’s land and open ourselves to the counsels of our servants like people who surround us.

This poor widow could put all her confidence in Prophet Elijah, an unknown man. It is not easy to believe an unknown person and share your last piece of bread of life to someone who is having lesser suffering comparing ours. She could do both. Lenten season is a wonderful opportunity to put our confidence in the Lord and listen to Him through our brothers and sister. By this behavior, we will never reject the prophets in our society.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 15, 1-3.11-32)

Gospel text (Lc 15,1-3.11-32): Tax collectors and sinners were seeking the company of Jesus, all of them eager to hear what He had to say. But the Pharisees and the scribes frowned at this, muttering: «This man welcomes sinners and eats with them». So Jesus told them this parable: «There was a man with two sons. The younger said to his father: ‘Give me my share of the estate’. So the father divided his property between them. Some days later, the younger son gathered all his belongings and started off for a distant land where he squandered his wealth in loose living. Having spent everything, he was hard pressed when a severe famine broke out in that land. So he hired himself out to a well-to-do citizen of that place and was sent to work on a pig farm. So famished was he that he longed to fill his stomach even with the food given to the pigs, but no one offered him anything. Finally coming to his senses, he said: ‘How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will get up and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against God and before you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me then as one of your hired servants’. With that thought in mind he set off for his father's house.

»He was still a long way off when his father caught sight of him. His father was so deeply moved with compassion that he ran out to meet him, threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. The son said: ‘Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you. I no longer deserve to be called your son...’. But the father turned to his servants: ‘Quick! Bring out the finest robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and kill it. We shall celebrate and have a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found’. And the celebration began.

»Meanwhile, the elder son had been working in the fields. As he returned and was near the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what it was all about. The servant answered: ‘Your brother has come home safe and sound, and your father is so happy about it that he has ordered this celebration and killed the fattened calf’. The elder son became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and pleaded with him. The indignant son said: ‘Look, I have slaved for you all these years. Never have I disobeyed your orders. Yet you have never given me even a young goat to celebrate with my friends. Then when this son of yours returns after squandering your property with loose women, you kill the fattened calf for him’. The father said: ‘My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But this brother of yours was dead, and has come back to life. He was lost and is found. And for that we had to rejoice and be glad’».

The message

The lesions that we can learn from this story are

Have courage to go back to the Father. He is ready to forgive each and every one us. We can’t afford to remain in a sinful life for a long time, as long as we have a loving Father.

If we take courage and go back to the Father, He will rise us up and will reestablish us as His own children.

Like the elder son, we may be tempted to revolt. But after the explication of the Father, we should learn to forgive and go further.

God gives us full freedom of choice. Like this elder son, let us not remain outside while the feasting is going on inside. We should take courage and go inside.

Let us not reject any sinner, and if we continue to do so, we may provoke the anger of God against us.

Gospel text (Mt 21,33-43.45-46): Jesus said to the chief priests and elders, «Listen to another example: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a hole for the winepress, built a watchtower, leased the vineyard to tenants and then went to a distant country. When harvest time came, the landowner sent his servants to the tenants to collect his share of the harvest. But the tenants seized his servants, beat one, killed another and stoned another. Again the owner sent more servants, but they were treated in the same way. Finally, he sent his son, thinking: ‘They will respect my son’. But when the tenants saw the son, they thought: ‘This is the one who is to inherit the vineyard. Let us kill him and his inheritance will be ours’. So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now, what will the owner of the vineyard do with the tenants when he comes?».

They said to him, «He will bring those evil to an evil end, and lease the vineyard to others who will pay him in due time». And Jesus replied, «Have you never read what the Scriptures say?: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the keystone. This was the Lord's doing; and we marvel at it’. Therefore I say to you: the kingdom of heaven will be taken from you and given to a people who will yield a harvest».

When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard these parables, they realized that Jesus was referring to them. They would have arrested him, but they were afraid of the crowd who regarded him as a prophet.

The message

God has given His creation to the humanity, so that the human beings may profit from the fruits of the earth, while honoring the Creator, who has given us not only the creation, but also the liberty to discern. In our arrogance and individualism, if we fail to recognize the source of our happiness and joy, we may radically fail to realize the wonderful work that God is doing through us. We will be tempted to steal the due honor that God deserves from human work.

Today’s gospel reminds us of our arrogance and our unfaithfulness towards the faithful God. The Lenten season gives us this occasion to be humble and give the due honor which God deserves. If we are faithful, God is capable of making miracle from our weaknesses. Let us learn to trust the Lord.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 16, 19-31)

Gospel text (Lc 16,19-31):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Once there was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and feasted every day. At his gate lay Lazarus, a poor man covered with sores, who longed to eat just the scraps falling from the rich man's table. Even dogs used to come and lick his sores.

»It happened that the poor man died and angels carried him to take his place with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. From hell where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham afar off, and with him Lazarus at rest. He called out: ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus with the tip of his finger dipped in water to cool my tongue, for I suffer so much in this fire’. Abraham replied: ‘My son, remember that in your lifetime you were well-off while the lot of Lazarus was misfortune. Now he is in comfort and you are in agony. But that is not all. Between your place and ours a great chasm has been fixed, so that no one can cross over from here to you or from your side to us’.

»The rich man implored once more: ‘Then I beg you, Father Abraham, to send Lazarus to my father's house where my five brothers live. Let him warn them so that they may not end up in this place of torment’. Abraham replied: ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them’. But the rich man said: ‘No, Father Abraham. But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent’. Abraham said: ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead’».

The message

Even though this parable is quite frightening, it gives us lot of hope. If we put our confidence in the Lord, and open our hearts to the needy in the society, God will be there always with us. This divine accompaniment will help us to fix our attention towards the essentials of life: Love of God and neighbors.

It is not a sin to be rich, but when this wealth is not shared with the needy, the wealth which God has given to us looses its finality of existence. Wealth should help us to express our love of others. If this love is not expressed through the wealth, it becomes a burden to become a faithful disciple of Christ.

The third and most important message of today’s gospel is that the sacred scriptures, the prophets and the laws are sufficient for us to enter in to the Kingdom of God. God has given us enough means and signs to understand the needs of others. If we fail to understand the suffering of the poor in our door step, how will it be possible for us to understand the divine signs in our daily lives?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 23, 1-12)

Gospel text (Mt 23,1-12): Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, «The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees sat on the seat of Moses. So you shall do and observe all they say, but do not do as they do, for they do not do what they say. They tie up heavy burdens and load them on the shoulders of the people, but they do not even raise a finger to move them. They do everything in order to be seen by people; so they wear very wide bands of the Law around their foreheads, and robes with large tassels. They enjoy the first place at feasts and reserved seats in the synagogues, and being greeted in the marketplace and being called "Master" by the people.

»But you, do not let yourselves be called Master because you have only one Master, and all of you are brothers and sisters. Neither should you call anyone on earth Father, because you have only one Father, He who is in heaven. Nor should you be called leader, because Christ is the only leader for you. Let the greatest among you be the servant of all. For whoever makes himself great shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be made great».

The message

The Lenten season gives us this occasion to accept Jesus as our master, and as a faithful disciples of this Master, we are called to listen to His teaching and to put into practice all that He is teaching to us in our daily life.

Today He is asking us to humble ourselves before God through our brothers and sisters, so that God could one day make us great before His eyes. He is warning us that the behavior of others is not an excuse to live our life fully in God, as par God’s own expectation.

He is inviting us to get converted and believe in this Gospel of Love, a new teaching, filled with mercy and forgiveness. Today is the day of conversion.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 6, 36-38)

Gospel text (Lc 6,36-38):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Don't be a judge of others and you will not be judged; do not condemn and you will not be condemned; forgive and you will be forgiven; give and it will be given to you, and you will receive in your sack good measure, pressed down, full and running over. For the measure you give will be the measure you receive back».

The message

Yesterday we have started the second Sunday of Lent by meditation on the transfiguration of the Lord. It is in this manifestation of the divinity of Jesus and His accomplishment of the Law and the prophets that we are called to participate.

Being merciful as the Heavenly Father is merciful is one of manner that we could identify this merciful God to the people. It is sharing and giving without any condition, that we could reveal our own identity as children of God.

Let us be generous as the heavenly Father, not only in sharing our richness but also in forgiving and accepting others as they are. Let this week be a beginning of something wonderful that we haven’t experienced by our Christian Faith in our own realization that we are children of this merciful God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 5, 43-48)

In English

Gospel text (Mt 5,43-48): Jesus said to his disciples, «You have heard that it was said: ‘Love your neighbor and do not do good to your enemy’. But this I tell you: Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in Heaven. For he makes his sun rise on both the wicked and the good, and he gives rain to both the just and the unjust. If you love those who love you, what is special about that? Do not even tax collectors do as much? And if you are friendly only with your friends, what is so exceptional about that? Do not even the pagans do as much? For your part you shall be righteous and perfect in the way your heavenly Father is righteous and perfect».

The message

When we read this gospel we may have two different sensations. The first may be, is it possible to be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. The second one is from the first. Does this demand from Jesus is justifiable? If we isolate our relation with God and our real identity as children of God, these questions have a place which can be justly acceptable.

If Jesus asks us to perfect as His Father is, it is because He sees us as the children of God and His demand to its perfection is rightly justifiable. We can’t expect a banana from a mango tree, isn’t it? If we are children of God, an exigency of the perfection is a basic ordinary demand.

Many of us refuse to believe that we are God’s children and automatically we refuse to be coherent with the identity of God. Let us genuinely try to respond to this question. Is Jesus who is harsh on us, or it is we who because of laziness refuse to climb up to the expectation of our own identify as children of God?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 5, 20-26)

Gospel text (Mt 5,20-26): Jesus said to his disciples, «I tell you, then, that if you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to our people in the past: ‘Do not commit murder; anyone who does kill will have to face trial’. But now I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will have to face trial. Whoever insults a brother or sister deserves to be brought before the council; whoever calls a brother or a sister "Fool" deserves to be thrown into the fire of hell.

»So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar and you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with him, and then come back and offer your gift to God. Don't forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put you in jail. There you will stay, until you have paid the last penny».

The message

As Christians we are called to show the way of gospel to others. Thus following the ordinary rules and regulations which are common to all can’t be sufficient for us. Jesus is telling us that our righteousness should surpass event from the doctors and teachers of the law.

Even though this demand of Jesus is little hard to put in practice, if we dare to put these as basic norms of daily activities, it will make our life happier and joyful. Jesus will insist to the extent of asking us to take the first step towards reconciliation. It is not only with the people with whom we have some disagreement, but to all those who have something against us. Thus searching such people and get reconciled with them before offering the gift to the Lord, goes little too much for us. May, the season Lent is not calling us to take such steps in our lives?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 7, 7-12)

Gospel text (Mt 7,7-12): Jesus said to his disciples, «Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; and the door will be opened to him who knocks. Would any of you give a stone to your son when he asks for bread? Or give him a snake, when he asks for a fish? As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there you have the Law and the Prophets».

The message

The Lenten season invites us to pray more, pray with confidence and love. This prayer rooted in divine love should in return help us to build a healthy relationship with our brothers and sisters. Any prayer which excludes others is not acceptable to God, because He has sent His only begotten Son for all.

The first reading helps us understand the deeper faith of queen Ester in God. Let us learn to make such prayers with faith and hope. It is in this deep faith in the providence of the Lord that we can express our utter confidence in the Lord. Do we feel the same confidence when we make our prayers?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 11, 29-32)

Gospel text (Lc 11,29-32): As the crowd increased, Jesus began to speak in this way, «People of the present time are evil people. They ask for a sign, but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah became a sign for the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be a sign for this generation. The Queen of the South will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and here there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for Jonah's preaching made them turn from their sins, and here there is greater than Jonah».

The message

Jesus gives us the sign, a wonderful sign that the world will understand after His resurrection. Since we are reducing everything to the visibility and immediate result, the wonderful signs of life escape from our intelligence and understanding.

Sign of Jonah reminds us the importance of his conversion before announcing the conversion of the Lord. He judged the people against the will of the Father, who wished to send him to this people, so that they may get converted. There are many such occasions where we have refused to respond positively to this call of the Lord.

Yesterday He taught us to pray, where forgiveness was insisted par reciprocity in our human relationship. We can’t forgive others, if we refuse to get converted ourselves. Let us open ourselves to this call of conversion, so that we may cherish a beautiful life filled with joy and peace that the resurrection of the Lord is promising to us today.
