Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 12, 46-50)

Saints July 23th: Bridget, religious

Gospel text (Mt 12,46-50): While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, «Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you». Jesus answered, «Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?». Then He pointed to his disciples and said, «Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother».

The message

Only if we do the will of the Father, we can associate ourselves with Jesus as brothers and sisters. Jesus has said to us and reminded us that the will of the Father is that the world may be saved and let this world recognize the loving Father in Jesus Christ and today let this society discover this love in us, the baptized.

For us the priority should be this divine Love, generally experienced personally and internally, particularly cherished and lived in our daily lives. No one will like to miss this cherished relationship with God. Do we?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Jean

(Jn 20, 1.11-18)

Liturgic day: July 22nd: Mary Magdalene

Gospel text (Jn 20,1-2.11-18):

Now, on the first day after the Sabbath, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark and she saw that the stone blocking the tomb had been moved away. She ran to Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved. And she said to them, «They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they have laid him».

Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she bent down to look inside; she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, and the other at the feet. They said, «Woman, why are you weeping?». She answered, «Because they have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him». As she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize him. Jesus said to her, «Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?». She thought it was the gardener and answered him, «Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him». Jesus said to her, «Mary». She turned and said to him, «Rabboni» —which means, Master. Jesus said to her, «Do not cling to me; you see I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them: ‘I am ascending to my Father, who is your Father, to my God, who is your God’. So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, «I have seen the Lord, and this is what he said to me».

The message

In a society which looked women lesser than an animal, Jesus have chosen her to be His first witness of the Resurrection. Searching something important while it is still dark may mislead us. In this darkness Mary has misunderstood Jesus as a gardener. The darkness was not only at the exterior part of her, but it was very much an interior reality.

It is strange that she went to look for a dead person while He is alive. It is in this stupidity and darkness that hindered her to see the Risen one.

If our faith is in dark room, even if the Lord comes and stands in frond us, we will not be able to recognize the Lord. Let us deepen our Faith in the Lord and we will see Him everywhere we go.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 10, 38-42)

Gospel text (Lc 10,38-42):

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, He entered a village and a woman called Martha welcomed him to her house. She had a sister named Mary who sat down at the Lord's feet to listen to his words. Martha, meanwhile, was busy with all the serving and finally she said, «Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving?». But the Lord answered, «Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her».

Homily

Today we have two readings which speak of the same thing. The first reading speaks about Abraham who receives three persons, but he addresses them as a single person (some call this as a representation of Trinity in the Old Testament) and we have in the gospel Martha and Mary receive Jesus in their house.

Both of them receive someone important and there we find the best way to receive them is to sit near to them. Abraham remains near to them and Mary sits very close to the Lord to listen to Him. Sitting close to someone is to express our proximity to this person and our interest to listen to them and be with them. What a joy when we are able to sit very close to someone we love and listen to them?

Abraham runs and he will keeping running throughout his life. He is not the only one who is running, but he makes every household member running so that the invited guests get the food in right time. There is hurry, not for him, but for the other. When the precipitation is oriented towards self oriented goals even though it may be for the other at the end (like Martha in the gospel for Jesus), is dangerous, because all work for this individual who demands and controls, while in reality they all are called to work for the Lord (we see this orientation from the behavior of Abraham).

Life will take a radical change only if we listen to the Lord. Abraham listens to the Lord and the orientation was always good. Martha was absent in this listening and we see the silence in Mary and a disturbance in Martha (she complains).

In today’s gospel we find that Martha is disturbed, disturbed of many things, while Abraham was not disturbed because he knew exactly what he should do. Getting involved in one single activity is better than getting involved with many activities and being disturbed. It is the question of priorities. Once we are able to prioritize the work, we will do the most important first and the rest afterwards. Mary did exactly the same, while Martha failed drastically to prioritize the events. Jesus reminds Martha once again, «Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed”. The Lord is reminding us the same. Let be conscious of this reality in our own lives.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 12, 14-21)

Gospel text (Mt 12,14-21):

The Pharisees went out and made plans to get rid of Jesus. As Jesus was aware of the plot, He went away from that place. Many people followed him and He cured all who were sick. Then He gave them strict orders not to make him known. In this way Isaiah's prophecy was fulfilled: «Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, and with whom I am pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him and He will announce my judgment to the nations. He will not argue or shout, nor will his voice be heard in the streets. The bruised reed He will not crush, nor snuff out the smoldering wick. He will persist until justice is made victorious and in him all the nations will put their hope».

The message

There are many in this world who find difficult to accept the goodness, because they are the people of darkness. When we oppose someone or something, let us look in to the value of this person and all that he is and all that he gives to the well being of the society. When we are opposed by the society, let us look at them and love them, because they don’t know what they do. Thus the means to apply is not the violence, rather patience and forgiveness.

Since Jesus is our master, let us imitate him in his non-violence and his way of continuing the mission of the Father. Jesus loved even his enemies and prayed for their conversion. Why don’t we start to do this with our friends and when they fail in their basic obligations, why make them enemies while they are still our friends?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 12, 1-8)

In English

Matthew 12: 1 - 8

1

At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.

2

But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath."

3

He said to them, "Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him:

4

how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?

5

Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless?

6

I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.

7

And if you had known what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless.

8

For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath."

The message

Jesus, who has lot of respect for the Law of Moses, finds himself in conflict with the Pharisees on accord with human laws. He doesn’t approve the acts of his disciples, but disapproves the reason given by the Pharisees for their disapproval. This distinction of priorities and the source of convictions are important, when we are faced with an extraordinary situation or with a conflict of value system in the society.

The laws are for us, but each and every one of us cannot make his own law and disturb the equilibrium in the society. But when this laws are oriented with love and mercy, this will show a new way to the new generation, and will give lots of hope for a younger and vibrant society.

Jesus has come to us to teach and show us this new vibrant society. Are we ready to accept this new way of life, or fall back to our own old habitue and remain in a closed society?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 11, 28-30)

Matthew 11: 28 - 30

28

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

The message

Jesus demands not only one aspect of us but our full being. If we find difficult to follow Jesus, it is not that the way proposed by Jesus is difficult, rather we are half minded. We need Jesus and the joy proposed by Him and at the same time the pleasures that the world promises.

Only if we engage with love and commitment to the will of the Father, the yoke and the burden of the Lord will be easy and light. Let us not mix up material and worldly desires with the spiritual aspirations

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 11, 25-27)

Matthew 11: 20 - 24

20

Then he began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.

21

"Woe to you, Chora'zin! woe to you, Beth-sa'ida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22

But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

23

And you, Caper'na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24

But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you."

The message

It is very sad to hear from people around us that we need proof to believe everything. It is all the more sad when a sick man proclaim with a loud voice that he is the ideal and healthy man. Jesus is sad when he sees the hard hearted people; his own people who refuse to believe the presence of God after seeing multiple miracles of Jesus.

To a believer one single faith experience either his own, or others, present or past, is sufficiently enough to have Faith. To an unbeliever, a thousand miracles may not be enough to believe.

Even in think darkness, I can see light, if my life is filled with light and at the same time, I can be alone in a crowded market. Don’t I see what I have…………………………? Why to close the eyes and complaint about the darkness?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 10, 34-42; 11, 1)

Gospel text (Mt 10,34--11,1):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Do not think that I have come to establish peace on earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father and daughter against her mother; a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. Each one will have as enemies those of one's own family.

»Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take up his cross and come after me is not worthy of me. One who wants to benefit from his life will lose it; one who loses his life for my sake will find it. Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me. The one who welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive the reward of a prophet; the one who welcomes a just man because he is a just man will receive the reward of a just man. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones, because he is a disciple of mine, I assure you, he will not go unrewarded».

When Jesus had finished giving his twelve disciples these instructions, He went on from there to teach and to proclaim his message in their towns.

The message

Today’s gospel can be understood in two ways. The first one is that the division in the name of religions is quite normal and how should we look in to it. This division can be radical if the religious thought teaches to the people something against love and charity. The Lord doesn’t wish to bring together the people who work for the Kingdom of God and the people who work against the Kingdom of God. We are living in a society which sees this division as something negative and the Lord sees this division as something positive for the well being of his people.

The second aspect is the priority in our Christian life. To every Christian, the Lord should be the priority and a witnessing life is the demand of the day. Those who believe in the Lord should proclaim to the world the good they have received from the Lord and share the joy of Faith in this world. Thus the Faith proclaimed and lived will guaranty a place for us in Heart of the Lord. Every act and little gesture of our witnessing life can produce marvelous fruit to the world.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 10, 25-37)

Jésus lui dit : « Tu as bien répondu. Fais ainsi et tu auras la vie. »

Amen.

Luke 10: 25 - 37

25

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

26

He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?"

27

And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."

28

And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."

29

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

30

Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31

Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side.

32

So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

33

But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion,

34

and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35

And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, `Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.'

36

Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?"

37

He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

The homily

All of us look for the eternal life, a life filled with joy and happiness, with perfect peace prevailing where ever we go. How wonderful would have being, if there is no sickness, no war, no hatred, no fight ,ect. A good imagination...........! However this is the world which many of us are looking for.

The doctor of the law of Moses seems to be very close to our aspiration. He has more or less has asked a question which many of us would prefer to ask. The answer to this question came very fast from the Lord. The Lord has chosen to remain faithful to the tradition and to the scripture which the doctor of the law is accustomed with. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." The master of the law knew already the answer. Now he goes little further…..

, "who is our neighbor," Jesus answers to him through this parable of Good Samaritan: all those who are in need of us are our neighbors. The doctor of the law goes back totally convinced of the answer.

Let us look at the parable of the Good Samaritan.

The man stops and allows himself to be oriented to the new direction totally to an unknown situation where he was not prepared, can we say like our father Abraham..............? Little pause in our daily routines and looking around the world where we live, is not totally a bad idea. Moses did the same thing. A little march towards the new horizons of life is the beginning of the opening of new life’s paths. Many of us are so habituated with normal routines that any little huddle is seen very much negative. There are many such occasions where we could realize the call of the Lord and our vocation to serve the people of God.

Even though Jesus was sent to the people of Israel, God has sent his only Son for the salvation of the whole world. So we can say that personal holiness or search for personal liberation, not connected with the people of God, cannot be the will of the Father.

Jesus referred the doctor of the law towards his neighbor to have the eternal life, "Go and do likewise. " Jesus is asking us the same: go and serve your people, if you wish to have the eternal life. We haven’t forgotten the last judgment of the Lord, “whenever you did to these little ones, you have done to me.”

This wounded man was happily visible to all, everyone has seen this man. Nobody took the time to go to him. Going towards someone is a sign of commitment, , taking a step towards knowing the person in front of us, a recognition of the dignity of man. If we don’t take the first step towards the other, how can we know and tell him that we love him? Knowing a person is the first step towards love. We have to take the first step and go towards our neighbors. Jesus came to us. Through the incarnation He recognized us as children of God.

Today Jesus is the Good Samaritan, the face of the invisible God who loves us. God reveled Himself in Jesus Christ. Can we be this revelator of loving God for our neighbors who are very much in need of this loving Father. Are we able to recognize the neighbors in our daily life? If we want eternal life, let us stop for a moment and see around like this Good Samaritan with a divine look and walk towards the people for whom God has called us and for whom we have dedicated our lives. Amen.
