Jesus is on the road and he does it with discretion, because the disciples were not able to understand either the divine project or the mystery of death and resurrection. By going with them, He leaves them free, free to think and act. He wishes that they discover for themselves the thoughts that dwell in their hearts. The Lord was observing their thoughts and He will come back to them as soon as they get home and ask them this question, "What were you discussing on the way? It was no longer in stealth, but direct, so that they would discover for themselves the subject that preoccupied them was against the divine will.

They were on their way, happily with the Lord, and we are still on our way, on our way to the perfection of holiness, a holiness willed by the Lord. Very often we are like those disciples, very disconcerted or disoriented, unable to discern the essentials of life, or like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, or like Mary Magdalene, hovering in the depths of our feelings and sentiments. Jesus comes to meet us, as usual, without any warning, without making any noise, to accompany us. He invited Mary to the tomb, and he walked with the disciples of Emmaus, and all of them understood at the end of these encounters the death and resurrection of the Lord, which had a deep meaning, rich in mystery that the world has not yet fully understood. He would like us to understand this mystery and to live it fully.

For this, the Lord presents us with a little child, as He embraced the incarnation, in all humility, in this child He presents Himself to us all. His disciples are invited to welcome this child of God who dwells in the depths of our being, a child who seeks the truth in all confidence and certainty. To welcome this child is in truth to become this child, and to become this child is in some way a rebirth that the Lord proposed to Nicodemus. There we would accept others who are different, as they are, with a joy of meeting them and knowing them to recognise them. We would welcome them, not because they deserve our welcome, but simply because the Lord who sends them to us deserves it.

We must never forget the first reading of the day. The wicked are there, they are with us and from time to time we are with them. Let us watch over the thought that dwells in our interior, for as St. James tells us, "jealousy and rivalries lead to disorder and all kinds of evil deeds. May we be inhabited by divine wisdom, which will help us to place ourselves at the service of the people, the people that God so loves.

Amen.

Gospel text

(Lk 8,4-15):

As a great crowd gathered and people came to him from every town, Jesus began teaching them through stories, or parables, «The sower went out to sow the seed. And as he sowed, some of the grain fell along the way, was trodden on and the birds of the sky ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and no sooner had it come up than it withered, because it had no water. Some fell among thorns; the thorns grew up with the seed and choked it. But some fell on good soil and grew, producing fruit —a hundred times as much». And Jesus cried out, «Listen then, if you have ears to hear!».

The disciples asked him, «What does this story mean?». And Jesus answered, «You have been granted to know the mystery of the kingdom of God. But to others it is given in the form of stories, or parables, so that seeing they may not perceive and hearing they may not understand.

»Now, this is the point of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the wayside are people who hear it, but immediately the devil comes and takes the word from their minds, for he doesn't want them to believe and be saved. Those on the rocky ground are people who receive the word with joy, but they have no root; they believe for a while and give way in time of trial. Among the thorns are people who hear the word but as they go their way, are choked by worries, riches, and the pleasures of life; they bring no fruit to maturity. The good soil, instead, are people who receive the word and keep it in a gentle and generous mind, and persevering patiently, they bear fruit.

The Application

Jesus reveals to us the mystery of the Kingdom of God and how we can produce the right fruits.

  • The Kingdom of God is not a static, but a progressive element, in which we are invited to participate.
  • The source of this Kingdom is the Word of God, heard and applied.
  • The sower continues to sow and hearts continue to listen and take it in. So, the hope of mercy and conversion of heart.
  • All the fields are our hearts. There are the times when we listen to the Word of God and put it into practice. There are also other times when we listen and do not put the Word into practice. No one is a bad field, because God has prepared us to receive it without any bias.
  • We are asked to be like those disciples, who always seek the truth, remain as if at the foot of Jesus, like Martha's sister, prioritising the essentials of life.
  • So, the Kingdom is not a finished product, but a way of construction, formation, transformation, renewal, etc. Every moment we are asked to discern, choose and act.
  • We must never forget that not only is the Sower the Lord, but also the seed belongs to the Lord, including the fruits of our commitments.

Action of the day: Good discernment helps us to choose the right act.

«The good soil are people who, persevering patiently, they bear fruit»

Fr. Lluís RAVENTÓS i Artés

(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, Jesus tells us about the sower that «went out to sow the seed» (Lk 8:5) and that seed was nothing else but the «the Word of God». But «the thorns grew up (...) and choked it» (Lk 8:7).

Thorns, we have many. «Among the thorns are people who hear the word but as they go their way, are choked by worries, riches, and the pleasures of life; they bring no fruit to maturity» (Lk 8:14).

—My Lord, Am I to blame for having worries? I wish I would not have any, but they keep on coming to me from everywhere! I do not see why they should deprive me from your Word, if they are not sin, vice or defect.

—Because you forget that I am your Father and you are being enslaved by a to-morrow you do not even know whether you will ever reach!

«If we would learn to live by trusting more in the Divine Providence, assured —with a strong faith!— of its daily protection that never fails us, how many worries and fears should not we avoid! All those chimaeras, that in Jesus' words are normal to the pagan world, to the worldly men, would simply disappear (cf. Lk 12:30), of the persons who are missing a supernatural feeling (...). St. Josemaria tells us: «I would like to engrave in your forehead with fire that we have all the reasons to walk with optimism through this world, with our soul getting rid of some many things that look absolutely necessary, for your Father knows what you actually need! (cf. Lk 12:30), and he shall provide».

David said: «Cast your care upon the Lord, and He shall sustain you» (Ps 54:23). This is what St. Joseph did during the great prove: he pondered, he consulted, he prayed, he resolved and left everything in the hands of God. When the Angel arrived, he did not dare to wake him up and spoke to him in his dreams.

Anyway, «I must have no other concern but your Glory..., in short, your Love» (St. Josemaria).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 8,4-15):

Abbé Lluís RAVENTÓS i Artés

(Tarragona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 8,1-3):

Jesus walked through towns and countryside, preaching and giving the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve followed him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary called Magdalene, who had been freed of seven demons; Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod's steward; Suzanna and others who provided for them out of their own funds.

The Application

Each of us is invited to announce the Good News, the PERSON, Jesus the Christ. This proclamation must be consistent with the teaching of Christ, a word filled with love and mercy.

To do this, we must recognise the gifts that God has given us, whether material, intellectual or spiritual. We place everything before the Lord, so that He may dispose of it according to His will.

A disciple of the Lord must imitate his Master, including his movements and detachments.  This is where he becomes universal, open and catholic. Like God who makes no difference, we must know how to welcome all, as our brothers and sisters. It is in this welcome that we become generous.

Action of the day: Look for means to serve the Lord.

«Jesus walked through towns and countryside, preaching and giving the good news of the kingdom of God»

Fr, Jordi PASCUAL i Bancells

(Salt, Girona, Spain)

Today, in the Gospel, we can appreciate what a normal day in the three years of Jesus' public life should have been. St. Luke explains it in a few words: «Jesus walked through towns and countryside, preaching and giving the Good News of the Kingdom of God» (Lk 8:1). This is what we contemplate in the third Mystery of Light of the Holy Rosary.

While commenting this mystery His Holiness st. John Paul II says: «Another mystery of light is the preaching by which Jesus proclaims the coming of the Kingdom of God, calls to conversion and forgives the sins of all who draw near to him in humble trust: the inauguration of that ministry of mercy which he continues to exercise until the end of the world, particularly through the Sacrament of Reconciliation which he has entrusted to his Church».

Jesus keeps on passing by close to us and offering us his supernatural goods: when we pray; when we read and ponder over the Gospel, to know and love him better and imitate his life; when we receive a sacrament, especially the Eucharist and the Penance; when we devote ourselves with effort and perseverance to our everyday's chores; when we have to deal with our family, our friends or our neighbours; when we help that person who is in need of material or spiritual help; when we have a rest or amuse ourselves... In all those circumstances we may find Jesus and follow him just as those Twelve and those saint women also did.

But, above that, each one of us is called by God to also be “the passing Jesus”, that is, to speak to those we deal with —with our deeds and our words— about the faith that fills out of meaning our existence, about the hope that impels us to go on forward through the paths of life designed by God, and about the charity that should guide all our acts.

The first one to follow Jesus and “to be Jesus” is Mary. That with her example and mediation she may help us!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 8,1-3):

Abbé Jordi PASCUAL i Bancells

(Salt, Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 7,36-50):

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to share his meal, so He went to the Pharisee's home and as usual reclined on the sofa to eat. And it happened that a woman of this town, who was known as a sinner, heard that He was in the Pharisee's house. She brought a precious jar of perfume and stood behind him at his feet, weeping. She wet his feet with tears, she dried them with her hair and kissed his feet and poured the perfume on them.

The Pharisee who had invited Jesus was watching and thought, «If this man were a prophet, he would know what sort of person is touching him; isn't this woman a sinner?». Then Jesus spoke to the Pharisee and said, «Simon, I have something to ask you». He answered, «Speak, master». And Jesus said, «Two people were in debt to the same creditor. One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other fifty. As they were unable to pay him back, he graciously canceled the debts of both. Now, which of them will love him more?». Simon answered, «The one, I suppose, who was forgiven more». And Jesus said, «You are right». And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, «Do you see this woman? You gave me no water for my feet when I entered your house, but she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You didn't welcome me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing my feet since she came in. You provided no oil for my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. This is why, I tell you, her sins, her many sins, are forgiven, because of her great love. But the one who is forgiven little, has little love».

Then Jesus said to the woman, «Your sins are forgiven». The others sitting with him at the table began to wonder, «Now this man claims to forgive sins!». But Jesus again spoke to the woman, «Your faith has saved you; go in peace».

The Application

For a good application of the gospel of the day, I would like to propose you the points that can help you to live this day in an evangelical way.

  • Let us imitate the woman's behavior, her faith and her courage. She knew how to abandon herself to God and God welcomed her and transformed her. It is quite possible that this story will be repeated in us, because God is always merciful.
  • Let us avoid the gaze of those people who do not have the courage to go to Christ. Each of us is invited to do our own duty, which this Pharisee forgot to honour.
  • Let us acknowledge the depth of our faith. Faith is able to invoke the exceptional courage that dwells within us, if we listen to its impulse and inspiration.
  • Forgiveness saves life. Let us be generous in forgiveness, as our Father is generous.

Action of the day : Have courage to surrender yourself to Christ

«She stood behind him at his feet, weeping»

Mons. José Ignacio ALEMANY Grau,

(Chachapoyas, Peru)

Today, Simon the Pharisee invites Jesus to dine with the purpose of drawing people’s attention. It was an act of arrogance, but his behavior when he met Jesus, did not even correspond to the most elementary good manners.

While dining, a public sinner does a great act of humility: «As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them and poured perfume on them» (Lk 7:38).

On the other hand, when meeting Jesus the Pharisee did not give Him the greeting kiss, or water for His feet, a towel to wipe them, nor did he anoint Him on the head with oil. Furthermore, the Pharisee said to himself: "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is - that she is a sinner" (Lk 7:39). It was the Pharisee, in fact, who didn't know who He was!

Pope Francis has very much insisted on the importance of approaching the sick, thus "touching the flesh of Christ". Upon canonizing St. Guadalupe García, Francisco said: «giving up a comfortable life to follow Jesus’ call, she taught the love of poverty, which permitted a greater love of the poor and infirm to serve them with tenderness and compassion: and this is called "touching the flesh of Christ". The poor, the abandoned, the sick, the marginalized are the flesh of Christ». Jesus touched the sick and He allowed them and the sinners to touch him.

The sinner of the Gospel touched Jesus and He was happy to see how her heart was transmuted. For this reason, He gave her the peace to reward her courageous faith. -You, my friend, do you come with love to touch the flesh of Christ in so many that go by your side and need you? If you do it, your reward will be the peace with God, with others and with yourself.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 7,36-50):

«Tu as raison», lui dit Jésus.

Gospel text

(Lk 2:33-35):

Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

The Application

We have just celebrated the exaltation of the glorious Cross, which was a scandal to some and a folly to others. For believers, it was a grace and a blessing. It is the source of our faith, the Christian faith, and we treasure it as a divine gift. If Mary was ready to receive this divine gift, and was able to accept it, because it was the divine will. Now, at the foot of the Cross, she will accept us as her children.

A mother in pain, through her pains, teaches us to live our painful moments in contemplation and prayer. She remained at the foot of the Cross in silence and contemplation. She invites us to feel her pains in us, which will help us to participate in the pain of her son in our flesh and to appropriate all that they can bring us. "See your Son" is an invitation to all of us, to welcome all those who suffer unjustly, even today, in their ordeals, who hide in silence, wearing a smiling face.

It is in this pain within her, in her maternal love that Mary was invited to discover the mystery of her Son.  She, by her faithfulness at the foot of the Cross, teaches us to be faithful to her Son. And, like her, the true disciple of Christ, today she invites us to discover the mystery of the suffering of her Son.

Action of the day: Be filled with Grace and share it with others.

«You yourself a sword will pierce»

Fr. Josep Mª SOLER OSB Abbot of Montserrat

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, in the celebration of the feast of our Lady of Sorrows, we hear the most unspeakable words in the mouth of old Simeon: “You yourself a sword will pierce” (Lk 2:35). From its context, we can assert this declaration does not only concern Jesus Christ's passion, but his missionary work, that will stir up the division of the people of Israel, and therefore, a painful grief in Mary's heart. All along Jesus' public life, the Virgin Mary will experience great sufferings upon seeing Jesus rebuked and threatened with death by the city authorities.

As the rest of Jesus' disciples, Mary has to learn to place her family relations in a different context altogether. She must also leave her Son because of the Gospel (cf. Mt 19:29), and have to learn not to appraise the Christ for his flesh, despite the fact He is flesh of her flesh. She is to crucify also her flesh (cf. Gal 5:24) to be able to transform herself into the image of Jesus Christ. But the height of her suffering, where she lives the cross more deeply, is Jesus' crucifixion and death.

Also in her pain, Mary is the model of perseverance of the evangelic doctrine while sharing Christ's suffering through her patience (cf. Rule of St. Benedict, Prologue 50). She has done it all her life, and most of all, during the Calvary. There she becomes the prototype and model for all Christians. Because she has been so closely linked to Christ's death, she is linked afterwards to his resurrection too (cf. Rm 6:5). In her excruciating pain, Mary's perseverance to abide by the Father's will, grants her a new illumination for the benefit of the Church and of Mankind. Mary precedes us and helps us to follow Christ in our way of faith. And the Holy Spirit leads us to share with her this great adventure.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 2,33-35):
