(Lc 8,1-3): 

Ensuite Jésus passait à travers villes et villages, proclamant la Bonne Nouvelle du règne de Dieu. Les Douze l'accompagnaient, ainsi que des femmes qu'il avait délivrées d'esprits mauvais et guéries de leurs maladies: Marie, appelée Madeleine (qui avait été libérée de sept démons), Jeanne, femme de Kouza, l'intendant d'Hérode, Suzanne, et beaucoup d'autres, qui les aidaient de leurs ressources.

L’Application

Chacun de nous est invité à annoncer la Bonne Nouvelle, la PERSONNE, Jésus le Christ. Cette annonce doit être cohérente avec l'enseignement du Christ, une parole pleine d'amour et de miséricorde.

Pour ce faire, nous devons reconnaître les dons que Dieu nous a accordés, qu'ils soient matériels, intellectuels ou spirituels. Nous plaçons tout devant le Seigneur, afin qu'il en dispose selon sa volonté.

Un disciple du Seigneur doit imiter son Maître, y compris dans ses mouvements et ses détachements.  C'est là qu'il devient universel, ouvert et catholique. Comme Dieu qui ne fait pas de différence, nous devons savoir accueillir tous, comme nos frères et sœurs. C'est dans cet accueil que nous devenons généreux.

Aujourd'hui, nous voyons dans l'Évangile ce que devait être une journée courante des trois années de vie publique de Jésus. Saint Luc nous la raconte en quelques mots: «Jésus passait à travers villes et villages, proclamant la Bonne Nouvelle du règne de Dieu» (Lc 8,1). C'est ce que nous contemplons dans le troisième mystère lumineux du Saint Rosaire.

Saint Jean-Paul II dit en commentant ce mystère: «Mystère lumineux que la prédication par laquelle Jésus annonce la venue du Royaume de Dieu et invite à la conversion, en pardonnant les péchés de ceux qui s'approchent de Lui avec une foi humble, inaugurant ainsi le mystère de la miséricorde qu'Il continuera d'exercer jusqu'à la fin du monde, spécialement à travers le sacrement de la Réconciliation confié à l'Église».

Jésus continue de passer près de nous en nous offrant ses biens surnaturels: quand nous prions, quand nous lisons et méditons l'Évangile pour Le connaître et L'aimer davantage et imiter sa vie, quand nous recevons un sacrement, en particulier l'Eucharistie et la Pénitence, quand nous nous dédions avec effort et constance au labeur quotidien, quand nous sommes avec notre famille, nos amis ou nos voisins, quand nous aidons cette personne qui se trouve dans le besoin matériel ou spirituel, quand nous nous reposons ou nous divertissons... Dans toutes ces circonstances, nous pouvons trouver Jésus et le suivre comme les douze et comme les saintes femmes.

Mais en plus, chacun de nous est appelé par Dieu à être aussi “Jésus qui passe”, pour parler –par nos œuvres et nos paroles– à ceux que nous essayons d'approcher de cette foi qui remplit de sens notre existence, de cette espérance qui nous pousse à aller de l'avant sur les chemins de la vie confiants dans le Seigneur, et de cette charité qui guide toute notre action.

Marie fut la première à suivre Jésus et à “être Jésus”. Qu'elle nous aide par son exemple et son intercession!

Gospel text

(Lk 7,36-50): 

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to share his meal, so He went to the Pharisee's home and as usual reclined on the sofa to eat. And it happened that a woman of this town, who was known as a sinner, heard that He was in the Pharisee's house. She brought a precious jar of perfume and stood behind him at his feet, weeping. She wet his feet with tears, she dried them with her hair and kissed his feet and poured the perfume on them.

The Pharisee who had invited Jesus was watching and thought, «If this man were a prophet, he would know what sort of person is touching him; isn't this woman a sinner?». Then Jesus spoke to the Pharisee and said, «Simon, I have something to ask you». He answered, «Speak, master». And Jesus said, «Two people were in debt to the same creditor. One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other fifty. As they were unable to pay him back, he graciously canceled the debts of both. Now, which of them will love him more?». Simon answered, «The one, I suppose, who was forgiven more». And Jesus said, «You are right». And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, «Do you see this woman? You gave me no water for my feet when I entered your house, but she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You didn't welcome me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing my feet since she came in. You provided no oil for my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. This is why, I tell you, her sins, her many sins, are forgiven, because of her great love. But the one who is forgiven little, has little love».

Then Jesus said to the woman, «Your sins are forgiven». The others sitting with him at the table began to wonder, «Now this man claims to forgive sins!». But Jesus again spoke to the woman, «Your faith has saved you; go in peace».

The Application

For a good application of the gospel of the day, I would like to propose you the points that can help you to live this day in an evangelical way.

• Let us imitate the woman's behavior, her faith and her courage. She knew how to abandon herself to God and God welcomed her and transformed her. It is quite possible that this story will be repeated in us, because God is always merciful.
• Let us avoid the gaze of those people who do not have the courage to go to Christ. Each of us is invited to do our own duty, which this Pharisee forgot to honour.
• Let us acknowledge the depth of our faith. Faith is able to invoke the exceptional courage that dwells within us, if we listen to its impulse and inspiration.
• Forgiveness saves life. Let us be generous in forgiveness, as our Father is generous.

«She stood behind him at his feet, weeping»

Today, Simon the Pharisee invites Jesus to dine with the purpose of drawing people’s attention. It was an act of arrogance, but his behavior when he met Jesus, did not even correspond to the most elementary good manners.

While dining, a public sinner does a great act of humility: «As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them and poured perfume on them» (Lk 7:38).

On the other hand, when meeting Jesus the Pharisee did not give Him the greeting kiss, or water for His feet, a towel to wipe them, nor did he anoint Him on the head with oil. Furthermore, the Pharisee said to himself: "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is - that she is a sinner" (Lk 7:39). It was the Pharisee, in fact, who didn't know who He was!


Pope Francis has very much insisted on the importance of approaching the sick, thus "touching the flesh of Christ". Upon canonizing St. Guadalupe García, Francisco said: «giving up a comfortable life to follow Jesus’ call, she taught the love of poverty, which permitted a greater love of the poor and infirm to serve them with tenderness and compassion: and this is called "touching the flesh of Christ". The poor, the abandoned, the sick, the marginalized are the flesh of Christ». Jesus touched the sick and He allowed them and the sinners to touch him.

The sinner of the Gospel touched Jesus and He was happy to see how her heart was transmuted. For this reason, He gave her the peace to reward her courageous faith. -You, my friend, do you come with love to touch the flesh of Christ in so many that go by your side and need you? If you do it, your reward will be the peace with God, with others and with yourself.

(Lc 7,36-50): 

Un pharisien avait invité Jésus à manger avec lui. Jésus entra chez lui et prit place à table. Survint une femme de la ville, une pécheresse. Elle avait appris que Jésus mangeait chez le pharisien, et elle apportait un vase précieux plein de parfum. Tout en pleurs, elle se tenait derrière lui, à ses pieds, et ses larmes mouillaient les pieds de Jésus. Elle les essuyait avec ses cheveux, les couvrait de baisers et y versait le parfum.

En voyant cela, le pharisien qui avait invité Jésus se dit en lui-même : «Si cet homme était prophète, il saurait qui est cette femme qui le touche, et ce qu'elle est: une pécheresse». Jésus prit la parole: «Simon, j'ai quelque chose à te dire». «Parle, Maître». Jésus reprit: «Un créancier avait deux débiteurs; le premier lui devait cinq cents pièces d'argent, l'autre cinquante. Comme ni l'un ni l'autre ne pouvait rembourser, il remit à tous deux leur dette. Lequel des deux l'aimera davantage». Simon répondit: «C'est celui à qui il a remis davantage, il me semble». «Tu as raison», lui dit Jésus. Il se tourna vers la femme, en disant à Simon: «Tu vois cette femme? Je suis entré chez toi, et tu ne m'as pas versé d'eau sur les pieds; elle, elle les a mouillés de ses larmes et essuyés avec ses cheveux. Tu ne m'as pas embrassé; elle, depuis son entrée, elle n'a pas cessé d'embrasser mes pieds. Tu ne m'as pas versé de parfum sur la tête; elle, elle m'a versé un parfum précieux sur les pieds. Je te le dis: si ses péchés, ses nombreux péchés, sont pardonnés, c'est à cause de son grand amour. Mais celui à qui on pardonne peu montre peu d'amour».

Puis il s'adressa à la femme: «Tes péchés sont pardonnés». Les invités se dirent: «Qui est cet homme, qui va jusqu'à pardonner les péchés?». Jésus dit alors à la femme: «Ta foi t'a sauvée. Va en paix!».

L’Application

Pour une bonne application de l'évangile du jour, je voudrais vous proposer les points qui peuvent vous aider à vivre cette journée de manière évangélique.

• Imitons le comportement de la femme, sa foi et son courage. Elle a su s'abandonner à Dieu et Dieu l'a accueillie et transformée. Il est fort possible que cette histoire se répète en nous, car Dieu est toujours miséricordieux.
• Évitons le regard de ces personnes qui n'ont pas le courage d'aller vers le Christ. Chacun de nous est invité à faire son devoir, que ce pharisien a oublié d'honorer.
• Reconnaissons la profondeur de notre foi. La foi est capable d'invoquer le courage exceptionnel qui nous habite, si nous écoutons son impulsion et son inspiration.
• Le pardon sauve la vie. Soyons généreux dans le pardon, comme notre Père est généreux.

«Tout en pleurs, elle se tenait derrière lui, à ses pieds»

Aujourd'hui, Simon le pharisien invite Jésus à manger pour attirer l'attention des gens. C'était un acte de vanité mais le traitement qu'il donna à Jésus quand il le reçut n'était même pas des plus élémentaires.

Au cours du dîner, une pécheresse publique fit un grand acte d'humilité : "Se tenant derrière Jésus, à ses pieds, elle commença à pleurer, elle lui mouilla les pieds avec ses larmes et les sécha avec ses cheveux ; elle embrassa ses pieds et les oignit de parfum" (Lc 7,38).

Par contre, le pharisien n'embrassa pas Jésus pour lui souhaiter la bienvenue, ne lui donna pas d'eau pour ses pieds, ni une serviette pour les sécher et ne lui mit pas d'huile sur la tête. De plus, le pharisien avait de mauvaises pensées : "Si cet homme était prophète, il saurait qui est la femme qui le touche et quelle sorte de personne c'est, car c'est une pécheresse" (Lc 7,39). En fait, celui qui ne savait pas à qui il avait affaire était le pharisien !

Le Pape François a beaucoup insisté sur l'importance de s'approcher des malades et ainsi "toucher la chair du Christ". En canonisant Sainte Guadalupe García, François dit : "Renoncer à une vie confortable pour suivre l'appel de Jésus ; aimer la pauvreté, pour pouvoir aimer davantage les pauvres, les malades et ceux qui sont abandonnés, pour les servir avec tendresse et compassion : cela s'appelle "toucher la chair du Christ". Les pauvres, ceux qui sont abandonnés, les malades et les marginaux sont la chair du Christ". Jésus touchait les malades et se laissait toucher par les malades et les pécheurs.

La pécheresse de l'Evangile toucha Jésus et Il se réjouit en voyant comme son cœur se transformait. C'est pour cela qu'Il lui donna la paix récompensant ainsi sa foi courageuse. Toi, mon ami, est-ce que tu t'approches avec amour pour toucher la chair du Christ à travers tous ceux qui passent près de toi et qui ont besoin de toi ? Si tu sais le faire, ta récompense sera la paix avec Dieu, avec les autres et avec toi-même.

Gospel text

(Lk 2:33-35): 

Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

The Application

We have just celebrated the exaltation of the glorious Cross, which was a scandal to some and a folly to others. For believers, it was a grace and a blessing. It is the source of our faith, the Christian faith, and we treasure it as a divine gift. If Mary was ready to receive this divine gift, and was able to accept it, because it was the divine will. Now, at the foot of the Cross, she will accept us as her children.

A mother in pain, through her pains, teaches us to live our painful moments in contemplation and prayer. She remained at the foot of the Cross in silence and contemplation. She invites us to feel her pains in us, which will help us to participate in the pain of her son in our flesh and to appropriate all that they can bring us. "See your Son" is an invitation to all of us, to welcome all those who suffer unjustly, even today, in their ordeals, who hide in silence, wearing a smiling face.  

It is in this pain within her, in her maternal love that Mary was invited to discover the mystery of her Son.  She, by her faithfulness at the foot of the Cross, teaches us to be faithful to her Son. And, like her, the true disciple of Christ, today she invites us to discover the mystery of the suffering of her Son.

Action of the day: Be filled with Grace and share it with others.

«You yourself a sword will pierce»

Today, in the celebration of the feast of our Lady of Sorrows, we hear the most unspeakable words in the mouth of old Simeon: “You yourself a sword will pierce” (Lk 2:35). From its context, we can assert this declaration does not only concern Jesus Christ's passion, but his missionary work, that will stir up the division of the people of Israel, and therefore, a painful grief in Mary's heart. All along Jesus' public life, the Virgin Mary will experience great sufferings upon seeing Jesus rebuked and threatened with death by the city authorities.

As the rest of Jesus' disciples, Mary has to learn to place her family relations in a different context altogether. She must also leave her Son because of the Gospel (cf. Mt 19:29), and have to learn not to appraise the Christ for his flesh, despite the fact He is flesh of her flesh. She is to crucify also her flesh (cf. Gal 5:24) to be able to transform herself into the image of Jesus Christ. But the height of her suffering, where she lives the cross more deeply, is Jesus' crucifixion and death.

Also in her pain, Mary is the model of perseverance of the evangelic doctrine while sharing Christ's suffering through her patience (cf. Rule of St. Benedict, Prologue 50). She has done it all her life, and most of all, during the Calvary. There she becomes the prototype and model for all Christians. Because she has been so closely linked to Christ's death, she is linked afterwards to his resurrection too (cf. Rm 6:5). In her excruciating pain, Mary's perseverance to abide by the Father's will, grants her a new illumination for the benefit of the Church and of Mankind. Mary precedes us and helps us to follow Christ in our way of faith. And the Holy Spirit leads us to share with her this great adventure.

Le père et la mère de l'enfant s'étonnaient de ce qu'on disait de lui. Syméon les bénit, puis il dit à Marie sa mère: «Vois, ton fils qui est là provoquera la chute et le relèvement de beaucoup en Israël. Il sera un signe de division. Et toi-même, ton coeur sera transpercé par une épée. Ainsi seront dévoilées les pensées secrètes d'un grand nombre».

L’Application

Nous venons de célébrer l'exaltation de la Croix glorieuse, qui fut un scandale pour les uns et une folie pour les autres. Pour les croyants, elle a été une grâce et une bénédiction. Elle est la source de notre foi, la foi chrétienne, et nous la chérissons comme un don divin à tous les croyants. Si Marie était prête à recevoir ce don divin, elle a pu l'accepter, car c'était la volonté divine. Maintenant, au pied de la Croix, elle va nous accepter comme ses enfants.

Une mère qui souffre, par ses douleurs, nous apprend à vivre nos moments douloureux dans la contemplation et la prière. Elle est restée au pied de la Croix dans le silence et le recueillement. Elle nous invite à sentir ses douleurs en nous, ce qui nous aidera à participer à la douleur de son fils dans notre chair et à nous approprier tout ce qu'elles peuvent nous apporter. " Vois ton fils " est une invitation pour nous tous, pour accueillir tous ceux qui souffrent injustement, aujourd'hui encore, dans leurs épreuves, qui se cachent en silence, en arborant un visage souriant.  

C'est dans cette douleur en elle, dans son amour maternel que Marie a été invitée à découvrir le mystère de son Fils.  Elle, par sa fidélité au pied de la Croix, nous apprend à être fidèles à son Fils. En ce jour de la fête de Notre-Dame des douleurs, comme elle, véritable disciple du Christ,  nous invite aujourd'hui à découvrir le mystère de la souffrance de son Fils.

«Ton coeur sera transpercé par une épée»

Aujourd'hui, en ce jour de fête de Notre-Dame la Vierge des Douleurs, nous écoutons des paroles lancinantes de la bouche du vieux Siméon: «Et toi-même, ton coeur sera transpercé par une épée» (Lc 2,35). Une affirmation qui, dans son contexte, ne fait pas uniquement référence à la passion de Jésus-Christ, sinon à son ministère, qui provoquera une division parmi le peuple d'Israël et donc, une douleur interne en Marie. Tout au long de la vie publique de Jésus, Marie a souffert de voir Jésus rejeté par les autorités du peuple et menacé de mort.

Marie, comme tout disciple de Jésus, doit apprendre à situer les relations familières dans un autre contexte. Elle aussi, en raison de l'Évangile, doit laisser son Fils (cf. Mt 19,29), et doit apprendre à ne pas voir le Christ depuis le prisme de la chair, bien qu'il soit né d'Elle, de la chair. Elle aussi doit crucifier sa chair (cf. Ga 5,24) pour pouvoir se transformer à l'image de Jésus-Christ. Mais le moment le plus fort de la souffrance de Marie, pendant lequel Elle vie le plus intensément la croix est celui de la crucifixion et de la mort de Jésus.

Aussi dans la souffrance, Marie est le modèle de persévérance de la doctrine évangélique en participant aux souffrances du Christ avec patience (cf. Regle de saint Benoît, Prologue 50). Ainsi fut-il pendant toute sa vie et, surtout, au moment du Calvaire. De cette façon, Marie se convertit en la figure et le modèle pour tout chrétien. Pour avoir été étroitement unie à la mort du Christ, elle est aussi unie à sa résurrection (cf. Rm 6,5). La persévérance de Marie dans la douleur, qui réalise la volonté du Père, lui donne un rayonnement en faveur de l'Église et de l'Humanité. Marie nous précède dans la route de la foi et du cheminement vers le Christ. Et le Saint-Esprit nous conduit à participer avec Elle à cette grande aventure.

Gospel text

(Jn 3:13-17): 

Jesus said to Nicodemus: “No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

The Application

The Cross is very often associated with suffering rather than with the victory of humanity, for visibly we see only the suffering Servant than the divine love that unfolds in this enactment of the fulfilment of the divine will. In Jesus on the Cross, sinful man died, for He bore all our sins in Himself. Through His death and resurrection, He gave birth to the new Man, whom He proposed to Nicodemus.

From now on, this humanity that man lost because of his sin, is restored once again, a new creation and becomes accessible to all those who desire it. That is why, for people of faith, the Cross is glorious. And we can celebrate it, without moderation, by contemplation and by action.

Very often, in spiritual accompaniment, I invite Christians to fix their gaze on the Cross, especially the face of Jesus, exhausted, yet victorious. This face speaks to us in a thousand ways with many languages that we must translate into human actions, where the ancient man will encounter the source of all hope, divine mercy.

It is in faith that we adore Christ Crucified, for He is our Way, who brings us and makes us discover a truth, the resurrection, in which we will find the lost Life, a new life of resurrection, a life without sin. There man will be saved.

Action of the day: Learn to embrace Cross happily.

«So that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life»

Today, the Gospel is a prophecy, that is, a glance into the mirror of reality that plunges us into its truth, far beyond what our own senses tell us: the Cross, the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ is the Savior's Throne. That is why Jesus asserts, “So must the Son of Man be lifted up” (Jn 3:14).

We do know the Cross was the most ignominious and heinous torture of its time. To exalt the Holy Cross would therefore be some sort of cynical joke, were it not for the crucified Christ hanging on it. The cross, without the Redeemer, is sheer cynicism; but with the Son of man the Cross is the new tree of Wisdom. By «freely submitting himself to the passion» of the Cross, Jesus Christ has opened the substance and purpose for our lives: to be lifted up with him to the Holy Cross to fling open our arms and our heart to God's heavenly gift, in an admirable exchange. Here too, we must listen to the Father's voice that came from the heavens: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mk 1:11). To be crucified with Jesus and resurrect with him: that is the reason for it all! There is hope, there is a meaning, and there is life! We are not mad when, we Christians, during the Paschal Vigil, in a most solemn way, that is, in the Easter Proclamation, sing a hymn of praise to the original sin: “O happy fault! O necessary fault of Adam, which gained for us so great a Redeemer!” who, through his pain has infused a new “significance” to pain.

“See the tree of the cross, where the Savior of the world was crucified: come and venerate it” (Good Friday Liturgy). If we manage to overcome the scandal and insanity of Christ crucified there is nothing else for us to do but to worship him and be grateful for his Gift. And to decidedly seek the Holy Cross in our own life, to fill us up with the certainty that, «through him, with him and in him», our offering will be transformed, in the hands of the Father, for the Holy Spirit, in eternal life: “Shed for you and for all men for the remission of sins.”

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 3,13-17): 

«Car nul n'est monté au ciel sinon celui qui est descendu du ciel, le Fils de l'homme. De même que le serpent de bronze fut élevé par Moïse dans le désert, ainsi faut-il que le Fils de l'homme soit élevé, afin que tout homme qui croit obtienne par lui la vie éternelle. Car Dieu a tant aimé le monde qu'il a donné son Fils unique: ainsi tout homme qui croit en lui ne périra pas, mais il obtiendra la vie éternelle. Car Dieu a envoyé son Fils dans le monde, non pas pour juger le monde, mais pour que, par lui, le monde soit sauvé».

L’Application

La Croix est très souvent associée à la souffrance plutôt qu'à la victoire de l'humanité, car visiblement nous ne voyons que le Serviteur souffrant plutôt que l'amour divin qui se déploie dans cette mise en œuvre de l'accomplissement de la volonté divine. En Jésus sur la Croix, l'homme pécheur est mort, car Il a porté tous nos péchés en Lui. Par sa mort et sa résurrection, il a donné naissance à l'Homme nouveau, qu'il a proposé à Nicodème.

Désormais, cette humanité que l'homme a perdue à cause de son péché, est à nouveau restaurée, une nouvelle création et devient accessible à tous ceux qui le désirent. C'est pourquoi, pour les personnes de foi, la Croix est glorieuse. Et nous pouvons la célébrer, sans modération, par la contemplation et par l'action.

Très souvent, dans l'accompagnement spirituel, j'invite les chrétiens à fixer leur regard sur la Croix, en particulier sur le visage de Jésus, épuisé, mais victorieux. Ce visage nous parle de mille façons avec de nombreux langages que nous devons traduire en actions humaines, où l'homme ancien rencontrera la source de toute espérance, la miséricorde divine.

C'est dans la foi que nous adorons le Christ crucifié, car il est notre Chemin, qui nous apporte et nous fait découvrir une vérité, la résurrection, dans laquelle nous retrouverons la Vie perdue, une nouvelle vie de résurrection, une vie sans péché. Là, l'homme sera sauvé.

«Tout homme qui croit obtienne par lui la vie éternelle»

Aujourd'hui, l'Évangile est une prophétie, c'est-à-dire un regard dans le miroir de la réalité qui nous introduit à sa vérité au-delà de ce que nous rapportent les sens: la Croix, la Sainte Croix de Jésus-Christ, est le Trône du Sauveur. C'est pourquoi Jésus affirme: «Ainsi faut-il que le Fils de l'homme soit élevé» (Jn 3,14).

Nous savons bien que la croix était le supplice le plus atroce et le plus honteux de l'époque. Exalter la Sainte Croix serait pur cynisme si le Crucifié ne s'y trouvait suspendu. La croix, sans le Rédempteur, est cynique; avec le Fils de l'Homme, elle est le nouvel arbre de la Sagesse. Jésus-Christ «s'offrant librement à la passion» de la Croix a ouvert le sens de notre destinée: monter avec Lui sur la Sainte Croix pour ouvrir les bras et le cœur au Don de Dieu, en un admirable échange. Ici aussi il nous convient d'écouter la voix du Père céleste: «Celui-ci est mon Fils (…), qui a toute ma faveur» (Mc 1,11). Nous trouver crucifiés avec Jésus et ressusciter avec Lui: voilà le sens de toutes choses! L'espérance est là, le sens est là, et l'éternité et la vie! Les chrétiens ne sont pas fous quand, dans l'Annonce de la Pâque, ils chantent la louange du péché originel: «Bienheureuse faute de l'homme, qui valut au monde en détresse le seul Sauveur», qui par sa douleur a donné sens à la douleur.

«Voici le bois de la Croix qui a porté le salut du monde: venez, adorons» (Liturgie du Vendredi Saint). Si nous parvenons à dépasser le scandale et la folie du Christ crucifié, il ne nous reste plus qu'à l'adorer et à lui rendre grâce pour son Don. Et chercher avec décision la Sainte Croix dans notre vie, pour nous remplir de la certitude que, «par Lui, avec Lui et en Lui», le don de nous-mêmes sera, dans les mains du Père et par l'Esprit Saint, transformé en vie éternelle: «Versé pour vous et pour la multitude en rémission des péchés».

Gospel text

(Lk 7,1-10): 

When Jesus had finished teaching to the people, He went to Capernaum. There was a captain whose servant was very sick and near to death, a man very dear to him. So when he heard about Jesus, he sent some elders of the Jews to persuade him to come and save his servant's life. The elders came to Jesus and begged him earnestly, saying, «He deserves this of you, for he loves our people and even built a synagogue for us».

Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the captain sent friends to give this message, «Sir, do not trouble yourself for I am not worthy to welcome you under my roof. You see I didn't approach you myself. Just give the order and my servant will be healed. For I myself, a junior officer, give orders to my soldiers and I say to this one: ‘Go’, and he goes; and to the other: ‘Come’, and he comes; and to my servant: ‘Do this’, and he does it».

On hearing these words, Jesus was filled with admiration. He turned and said to the people with him, «I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith». The people sent by the captain went back to his house; there they found that the servant was well.

The Application

A man of the word did recognise the power of the Word of God. This is the first time that a person on earth has recognised this divine power, in Jesus Christ, which was always attributed to the Father, the Creator God. It is remarkable that it was a stranger who recognised this divine power that dwells in us. And God is in awe!

This move of this centurion is a lesson to all of us, who are very often closed in on ourselves, with our ideas and personal interests. He will do it through his friends, with a personal message. This openness to the grace of God, a foreign God, expresses his gratitude and his faith. We all need others for our growth.

There is another message that we do not see clearly, because of the depth and the importance of the profession of faith: the participation of the Jewish leaders in the healing. It is true that not all of us have the gift of healing, yet we can lead people to Christ, the Saviour of the world. Some Jews played an important role in the mission of Jesus. I deeply believe that today we can participate in God's mission through our positive engagement with the daily needs of our brothers and sisters.

Action of the day: Believe in the power of the Word of God.

«I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith»

Today, we are faced with an interesting question. Why did the captain in the Gospel not personally approach Jesus but rather, sent messengers ahead with the request to heal his servant? The captain answers this question for us in the Gospel passage. «You see I didn't approach you myself. Just give the order and my servant will be healed» (Lk 7:7).

The captain possessed the virtue of faith to believe that Jesus could work this miracle if it was in accord with his divine will. Faith allowed the captain to believe that no matter where Jesus was located He could heal the ill servant. The captain believed that no distance could prevent or stop the Christ from carrying out his work of salvation.

We are called to have that same faith in our own lives. There are times when we are tempted to think that Jesus is far away and not listening to our prayers. However, faith illumines our minds and hearts to believe that Jesus is always there to help us. In fact, the healing presence of Jesus in the Eucharist is a reminder that Jesus is always with us. St. Augustine, with eyes of faith, believed this reality: «What you see is the bread and the chalice; that is what your own eyes report to you. But what your faith obliges you to accept is that the bread is the Body of Christ and the chalice is the Blood of Christ».

Faith illumines our minds to see that it is the very presence of Jesus in our midst. We like the captain say, «I am not worthy to welcome you under my roof» (Lk 7:6). Yet, we humble ourselves before our Lord and Savior and He still draws near to heal us. May we allow Jesus to enter our soul, under our roof, to heal and strengthen our faith so we may press on towards Eternal Life.

Lorsque Jésus eut achevé de faire entendre au peuple toutes ses paroles, il entra dans Capharnaüm. Un centurion de l'armée romaine avait un esclave auquel il tenait beaucoup; celui-ci était malade, sur le point de mourir. Le centurion avait entendu parler de Jésus; alors il lui envoya quelques notables juifs pour le prier de venir sauver son esclave. Arrivés près de Jésus, ceux-ci le suppliaient: «Il mérite que tu lui accordes cette guérison. Il aime notre nation: c'est lui qui nous a construit la synagogue».

Jésus était en route avec eux, et déjà il n'était plus loin de la maison, quand le centurion lui fit dire par des amis: «Seigneur, ne prends pas cette peine, car je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit. Moi-même, je ne me suis pas senti le droit de venir te trouver. Mais dis seulement un mot, et mon serviteur sera guéri. Moi qui suis un subalterne, j'ai des soldats sous mes ordres; à l'un, je dis: ‘Va’, et il va; à l'autre: ‘Viens’, et il vient; et à mon esclave: ‘Fais ceci’, et il le fait».

Entendant cela, Jésus fut dans l'admiration. Il se tourna vers la foule qui le suivait: «Je vous le dis, même en Israël, je n'ai pas trouvé une telle foi!». De retour à la maison, les envoyés trouvèrent l'esclave en bonne santé.

L’Application

Un homme de parole a reconnu la puissance de la Parole de Dieu. C'est la première fois qu'une personne sur terre a reconnu cette puissance divine, en Jésus-Christ, qui a toujours été attribuée au Père, le Dieu créateur. Il est remarquable que ce soit un étranger qui ait reconnu cette puissance divine qui nous habite. Et Dieu est dans l'admiration !

Le geste de ce centurion est une leçon pour nous tous, qui sommes bien souvent fermés sur nous-mêmes, avec nos idées et nos intérêts personnels. Il va le faire à travers ses amis, avec un message personnel. Cette ouverture à la grâce de Dieu, un Dieu étranger, exprime sa gratitude et sa foi. Nous avons tous besoin des autres pour notre croissance.

Il y a un autre message que nous ne voyons pas clairement, à cause de la profondeur et de l'importance de la profession de foi : la participation des chefs juifs à la guérison. Il est vrai que nous n'avons pas tous le don de guérison, mais nous pouvons conduire les gens au Christ, le Sauveur du monde. Certains juifs ont joué un rôle important dans la mission de Jésus. Je crois profondément qu'aujourd'hui, nous pouvons participer à la mission de Dieu par notre engagement positif face aux besoins quotidiens de nos frères et sœurs.

«Je vous le dis, même en Israël, je n'ai pas trouvé une telle foi!»

Aujourd'hui, nous sommes confrontés à une question intéressante. Pourquoi le centurion de l'Évangile n'alla-t-il pas trouver personnellement Jésus, mais envoya en ambassade quelques notables juifs, pour qu'ils Lui demandent de venir guérir son serviteur? Le centurion lui-même répond à notre place dans le passage évangélique: «Seigneur, je ne me suis pas senti le droit de venir te trouver. Mais dis seulement un mot, et mon serviteur sera guéri» (Lc 7,7).

Ce centurion avait la vertu de foi, qui croyait que Jésus pourrait opérer le miracle —s'il le souhaitait— par le seul effet de sa divine volonté. Sa foi lui faisait croire que, quelque soit l'endroit où Jésus se trouvât, il serait capable de guérir le serviteur malade. Ce centurion était très convaincu de ce qu'aucune distance ne pouvait empêcher ou arrêter Jésus-Christ, s'il voulait mener à bien son œuvre de salut.

Nous aussi, nous sommes appelés à avoir la même foi dans nos vies. Parfois, nous pouvons être tentés de croire que Jésus est loin et qu'il n'écoute pas nos prières. Mais la foi éclaire nos esprits et nos cœurs en nous faisant croire que Jésus est toujours proche pour nous aider. De fait, la présence salvifique de Jésus dans l'Eucharistie doit nous rappeler en permanence que Jésus est toujours proche. Saint Augustin, avec les yeux de la foi, croyait en cette réalité: «Ce que nous voyons, c'est le pain et le calice; c'est là ce que tes yeux te disent. Mais ce que ta foi t'oblige à accepter, c'est que le pain est le Corps de Jésus-Christ et que dans le calice se trouve le Sang de Jésus-Christ».

La foi illumine nos esprits pour nous faire voir la présence de Jésus au milieu de nous. Et, comme le centurion, nous dirons: «Seigneur, ne prends pas cette peine, car je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit» (Lc 7,6). Lorsque nous nous humilions devant notre Seigneur et Sauveur, Il vient et s'approche pour nous guérir. Nous laissons ainsi Jésus pénétrer notre esprit, entrer dans notre maison, pour guérir et fortifier notre foi et nous amener jusqu'à la vie éternelle.

(Lk 6,43-49): 

Jesus said to the crowd, «No healthy tree bears bad fruit, no poor tree bears good fruit. And each tree is known by the fruit it bears: you don't gather figs from thorns, or grapes from brambles. Similarly the good person draws good things from the good stored in the heart, and an evil person draws evil things from the evil stored in the heart. For the mouth speaks from the fullness of the heart.

»Why do you call me: ‘Lord! Lord!’ and not do what I say? I will show you what the one who comes to me and listens to my words and acts accordingly, is like. That one is like the builder who dug deep and laid the foundations of his house on rock. The river overflowed and the stream dashed against the house, but could not carry it off because the house had been well built. But the one who listens and does not act, is like a man who built his house on the ground without a foundation. The flood burst against it, and the house fell at once: and what a terrible disaster that was!».

The Application

Life is filled with troubles and temptations. It’s never an easy task, forcing all those who search for truth, to enter into an adventurous path. St. Paul in the first reading gives us a very good testimony his past adventurous life, which was elevated and blessed by divine forgiveness. He shares with us his experience of pardon and mercy, because deep inside him, God was alive. Everything he did was in his ignorance, far from the true faith that Moses taught.

It is quite possible like him that man can err in his discernment. Yet, if his heart is pure and his mind is filled with true love for his God, which is expressed in his forgiveness, by the grace of God, he can easily be converted, and begin a new life, just like Paul who lived fully by and for Christ.

Today Jesus invites us to review our lives and to discover the source of our thinking and the one that guides us from our interiority. We must verify whether the divine will guides us or our personal and carnal interest.  A love for God without humanity can totally destroy us, without redemption. We must always make sure that we do not stray from the divine mercy. The troubles of life can disturb us. The winds of wickedness and revenge can upset us.

Faith and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and a heart filled with love and mercy, will help us to always to withstand, and through patience and perseverance, we can always give in due time the fruit that God desires in us. To do this, we must go to the Lord, listen to Him and put into practice all that He tells us.

Action of the day: Keep your faith alive.

«Each tree is known by the fruit it bears»

Today, the Lord surprises us by “advertising” himself. It is not my intention to “shock” anyone with this assertation. It is only our earthly publicity that lessens the great and supernatural things. What induces us to look at publicity with suspicion are, for instance, promises such as those assuring us that, within a few weeks, we will be losing five or six kilograms if using a certain “trick product” (or others to the same extent). But, when we have a hundred per cent guaranteed “product”, and —as in the case of the Lord— nothing is being sold in exchange of money, and we are only asked to believe him while considering him our leader and a model of a certain life style, then this kind of “publicity” should not surprise us and can be accepted as totally legitimate. Has not Jesus been the greatest “publicist” when He said, «I am the Way and the Truth and the Life» (Jn 14:6)?

Today, He affirms that «the one who comes to me and listens to my words and acts accordingly» is wise and «is like the builder who dug deep and laid the foundations of his house on rock» (Lk 6:47-48), for he now has a well built house, that can face any kind of weather. On the contrary, if the builder is not so sensible, he will end up in the middle of a pile of rubble and, if he was in the house when the flood burst into it, he may lose not only the house but his own life, too.

Therefore, it is not enough to get close to Jesus, but we have to listen, with the maximum attention, to his teachings and, most of all, to prompt them into action. For even the curious, the heretic or the history or philology scholar may approach him... So only by coming close to him, and basically, by practicing Jesus' doctrine, shall we be able to build a building of Christian saintliness, as a paradigm for the faithful pilgrims and glory of the celestial Church.
