Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 18,21—19,1):

Abbé Joan BLADÉ i Piñol

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Sept fois ? Soixante dix fois sept fois? Peut-être plus!

Gospel text

(Mt 18,21—19,1):

Peter asked Jesus, «Lord, how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister? Seven times?». Jesus answered, «No, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. This story throws light on the kingdom of heaven. A king decided to settle the accounts of his servants. Among the first was one who owed him ten thousand gold ingots. As the man could not repay the debt, the king commanded that he be sold as a slave with his wife, children and all his goods in payment. The official threw himself at the feet of the king and said, ‘Give me time, and I will pay you back everything’. The king took pity on him and not only set him free but even canceled his debt.

»This official then left the king's presence and he met one of his companions who owed him a hundred pieces of silver. He grabbed him by the neck and almost strangled him, shouting, ‘Pay me what you owe!’. His companion threw himself at his feet and asked him, ‘Give me time, and I will pay everything’. The other did not agree, but sent him to prison until he had paid all his debt. His companions saw what happened. They were indignant and so they went and reported everything to their lord. Then the lord summoned his official and said, ‘Wicked servant, I forgave you all that you owed when you begged me to do so. Weren't you bound to have pity on your companion as I had pity on you?’. The lord was now angry, so he handed his servant over to be punished, until he had paid his whole debt». Jesus added, «So will my heavenly Father do with you unless each of you sincerely for-give your brother or sister».

When Jesus had finished this teaching, He left Galilee and arrived at the border of Judea, on the other side of the Jordan River.

The Application

If the question is asked another way as, how many time should I love my brothers and sisters, then we ourselves could answer this question easily. For me personally, forgiveness is the other side of love. Jesus is addressing his disciples, and the answer applies to all those who love Jesus. If we are in love with Jesus, then what he says has to be part of our life.

The parable affirms that God’s love and mercy are not something that we are going to receive, rather what we have already received. The first reading gives us a part of the salvation history, and how Moses’ legacy is taken forward. The more we become aware of what God has given to us in our history, the better will be our capacity to adjust to the newness of life. Once we are aware, what God has done to us, we will be ready to give back to God with gratitude. Our loving and forgiving is not to receive back, rather give back what we have already received from God. Today’s parable invites us to be aware of the divine mercy and love that we have received from God and return the same to our brothers and sisters.

It is in this giving that our brothers and sisters will discover the divine love and mercy. If we fail to give back what we have already received, then how God’s presence will be felt by our brothers and sisters. We as God’s people be aware of this responsibility and act in our humanity divinely.

Action of the day: Act divinely in your humanity.

«Lord, how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister?»

Fr. Joan BLADÉ i Piñol

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, asking «how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister?» (Mt 18:21), may mean: —These persons I love so much also have their little ways and whims that bother me; day after day, they pester me every five minutes; they do not speak to me... Lord, how long am I supposed to put up with them?

And Jesus answers with the lesson of the patience. Actually, both colleagues coincide when they say: «have patience» (Mt 18:26-29). But, while the intemperance of the wicked one, strangling his companion for a few silver coins, provokes his moral and economic ruin, the king's patience, while saving the debtor, his family and his goods, magnifies the monarch's personality and generates the confidence of his court. The king's reaction in Jesus' words reminds us the Psalm that goes: «But you are willing to forgive, so that you might be honored» (Ps 130:4).

Evidently, we have to oppose to injustice, and energetically, if at all necessary, (otherwise, it would be a sign of apathy or cowardice). But indignation is healthy only when there is no selfishness, nor wrath, nor any nonsense, but our straight desire to fight for the truth. The authentic patience brings us to put up mercifully with contradiction, weakness, inconveniences, unreasonable persons or events. To be patient is tantamount to dominate oneself. Susceptible or violent persons cannot be patient because they neither take their time reflect about anything nor can they dominate themselves.

Patience is a Christian virtue because is a part of the message from the Kingdom of Heaven, and it is forged on the experience we all have defects. If Paul exhorts us to put on a heart of patience with one another (cf. Col 3:12-13), Peter reminds us that the Lord's patience offers us the chance of salvation (cf. 2Pet 3:15).

For, how many times has God's patience forgiven us in the confessionary?
Seven times? Seventy seven times, seven? Maybe more!

Gospel text

(Mt 18,15-20):

Jesus said to his disciples, «If your brother or sister has sinned against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are in private, and if he listens to you, you have won your brother. If you are not listened to, take with you one or two others so that the case may be decided by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he still refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembled Church. But if he does not listen to the Church, then regard such a one as a pagan or a publican. I say to you: whatever you bind on earth, heaven will keep bound; and whatever you unbind on earth, heaven will keep unbound. In like manner, I say to you: if on earth two of you are united in asking for anything, it will be granted to you by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered in my Name, I am there among them».

The Application

We have two important points for the application of this gospel: dialogue and fraternal correction, and the certainty of the divine presence in our daily lives. I personally would like to rely on this divine presence, because my actions are inspired and oriented by this presence. The more we feel this divine presence in our daily lives, the gentler and more merciful we will be towards our brothers, particularly those who are weak. Through this presence, our actions will be conditioned by the divine will than that of the behavior of others. Let's pray to God that may this day be filled with this divine presence and may we be gentle and merciful.

Action of the day: Learn to dialogue, feeling the divine presence.

«If your brother or sister has sinned against you, go and point out the fault (...). Where two or three are gathered in my Name, I am there among them»

Fr. Pedro-José YNARAJA i Díaz

(El Montanyà, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, in this brief evangelic fragment, the Lord teaches us three frequently ignored but important ways to proceed.

Understanding and advice for the friend or colleague. To warn him, in discreet intimacy («the two of you in private»), clearly («point out the fault»), of his erroneous attitude so that he can revitalize his way of life. Eventually, if the first advice did not result in anything positive, to get also a friend's collaboration. But if even in this way his conversion cannot be achieved and his sin causes great scandal, we must not doubt to exert the prophetic and public act of denouncing that, today, may just be a letter to a publication's director, or a demonstration or a banner. However, this way of acting is very demanding for whoever practicing it, and frequently, ungrateful and awkward. This is why so many find it much easier to choose what we wrongly call “Christian charity”, which is nothing but pure escapism, comfort, cowardice, false tolerance. In fact, «the same punishment awaits evildoers than the complacent who tolerate them» (St. Bernard).

Every Christian has the right to demand from us priests the forgiveness of God and his Church. At a given moment, a psychologist may appease your state of mind; a psychiatrist, through medical care, can defeat an endogenous disorder. Both can therefore be very useful though, at times, prove to be insufficient. For God only may forgive, remove, forget, smash while destroying, the personal sin. And only his Church can tie or untie demeanours, while transcending Heaven’s judgment. And, thanks to all this enjoy an internal peace and start to be happy.

In the priest's hands and words lie the privilege of taking the bread for Jesus-Eucharist to actually become immanence and food. Any disciple from the Kingdom may join another one, or better still, many more, and with fervor, Faith, courage and Hope, submerge into the world to transform it in the true body of Jesus-Mystic. And in his company go to God Father that will listen to our pleas, for his Son promised us so, «for where two or three are gathered in my Name, I am there among them» (Mt 18:20).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 18,15-20):

Abbé Pedro-José YNARAJA i Díaz

Si quelqu'un me sert, mon Père l'honorera».

L’Application

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Jn 12,24-26):

Jesus said, «Truly, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Those who love their life destroy it, and those who despise their life in this world keep it for everlasting life. Whoever wants to serve me, let him follow me and wherever I am, there shall my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him».

The Application

We are the children of God, a free God. It is in this freedom that we choose whatever we judge to be best for us. The world has taught us to choose life and avoid death.

Yet we know in our daily lives that death brings us into another life, a new life, like the death of childhood to adolescence, the death of adolescence to adult life. This is why, for us Christians, death is not the end, but a beginning of a new life with God, the God who loves us, and the God we love ourselves.

Therefore, to give our earthly life to the Author of life, is not necessarily a loss to the giver, but in truth a gain. All martyrs are aware of this truth and have given their lives generously for their faith.

Every martyr is well aware that the blood shed for Christ is worth a thousand years of life. They are well aware that their death mitigates the wrath of their oppressors and protects the faithful believers.

Although for the elites of Christ's time his death was a success, and his resurrection was a scandal for the pagans, history tells of the fulfillment of all prophecies and laws. All martyrs participate in and perpetuate this salvation story.

The silent and powerful divine accompaniment of the Father throughout Jesus' life, from the Incarnation to the Ascension, is fully felt and lived as their own by almost all who have given their lives for the Faith. Like Jesus, no one was sad to die for Christ. They gave their lives joyfully and peacefully, even if torture and pain did not allow them to cherish that peace and joy in tranquillity. Let us pray that God will grace us with the blessing of martyrdom.

Action of the day: Don’t be afraid of Death, because our God is alive.

«Whoever wants to serve me, let him follow me and wherever I am, there shall my servant be also»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the Church —through the liturgy of the Eucharist celebrating the feast of St. Lawrence, the roman martyr— reminds us that «there exists a testimony of coherence that all Christians must be willing to give, even at the cost of great sacrifice and suffering» (Saint John Paul II).

Moral law is saint and inviolable. This assertion, certainly contrasts with the relativistic environment abounding now a days, whereas we tend to easily adapting ethical demands to our personal comfort or to our own weaknesses. We shall certainly not find anyone admitting: —I am immoral; —I am unconscious; —I am a person without truth... Anyone admitting these facts would automatically and immediately disqualify himself.

The definite question would therefore be: what moral, what conscience and what truth are we talking about? It is evident that social peace and healthy coexistence cannot be based on a “moral à la carte”, where each one chooses his own way, without bearing in mind the inclinations and aspirations the Creator has set out for our nature. This “moral”, far from leading us trough the «paths of righteousness» towards the «green pastures» the Good Shepherd wants for us (cf. Ps 23:1-3), it would irremediably take us to the quicksand of the “moral relativism”, where absolutely everything can be debated, agreed upon and justified.

Martyrs are unappealable testimonies of the saintliness of the moral law: there are basic demands of love that accept neither exceptions nor adaptations. In fact, «in the New Covenant we can find numerous testimonies followers of Christ that (...) accepted persecutions and death before making the idolatrous gesture of burning incense before the statue of the Emperor» (Saint John Paul II).

In the Roman environment of emperor Valerian, the deacon «St. Lawrence loved Christ in life, and imitated Christ unto death» (St. Augustine). And, once again, we see confirmed that «the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life» (Jn 12:25). Luckily for us, the memory of St. Lawrence will perpetually remain as a signal that to follow Christ is worth offering our life rather than admitting frivolous interpretations of his path.

Gospel text

(Mt 17,22-27):

On day when they were together in Galilee, Jesus said to his disciples, «The Son of Man will be delivered into human hands, and they will kill him. But He will rise on the third day». The Twelve were deeply grieved.

When they returned to Capernaum, the Temple tax collectors came to Peter and asked him, «Does your master pay the temple tax?». He answered, «Certainly». Peter then entered the house, but immediately Jesus asked him, «What do you think, Simon? Who pay taxes or tributes to the kings of the earth: their sons or the other people?». Peter replied, «The others». And Jesus told him, «The sons, then, are tax-free. But so as not to offend these people, go to the sea, throw in a hook and open the mouth of the first fish you catch. You will find a coin in it, take it and let it pay for you and for me».

The Application

Jesus is very practical in his approach to life.  He doesn’t wish to be neither radical nor revolutionary. For Jesus, the will of the Father (death and resurrection) takes the priority and the rest are secondary. Paying the tax, thus for Jesus is secondary, and willingly oblige to a civil custom, which is still contradictory, but will use this to teach and be a good model in a civil society.

This fixability is very much essential in our daily life. Our master has shown the better way of living in a civil society without troubling others. This civil tranquility does oblige us to do some compromise, which are neither contrary to divine will nor to the commandment of love.

Jesus’ attention in these little things is very important for our daily life. We should give attention to very little things in life, because these little attentions give lot of hope and energy to the weaker section of the society.  The society love to give attention to the majority and as baptized, we are called to look after the minority, like the afflicted, immigrated and abandoned in our society. It is here that we can serve God.

Action of the day: Learn to be open and accommodative.

«When they were together in Galilee»

Fr. Joaquim PETIT Llimona, L.C.

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the liturgy offers, for us to consider, different possibilities. Amongst these we could, perhaps, stop in something implicit throughout the text: Jesus' familiar attitude with his disciples.

St. Matthew says that Jesus and his disciples «were together in Galilee» (Mt 17:22). Though it is quite evident, the fact the Evangelist deems it necessary to mention it seems to emphasize the nearness of Jesus Christ. Shortly afterwards, Jesus opens His heart to make them aware of his Passion, Death and Resurrection, that is, of something He had been keeping inside himself but He does not want to conceal any longer from those He loves so much. Still further, the text mentions the tax payment episode, and, here too, the Evangelist shows us Jesus' demeanor with them, by placing himself at Peter's level, and counterposing the tax-free sons (Jesus and Peter) to the others, who must pay. Finally, Christ, shows Peter how to get the necessary monies to pay, not only for Him, but for both of them and, thus, avoid any scandal.

In all these traits we may discover a fundamental vision of our Christian life: Jesus' desire to remain with us. In the book of Proverbs the Lord says: «Rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind» (Pr 8:31). Amazing, how this reality may change our approach to our spiritual life where, at times, we only pay attention to what we do, as if that was the most important part of it…! Our interior life must be centered in Christ, in his love for us, in his dying on the Cross for me, in his constant search of our heart. In one meeting with the youth, in Spain, saint John Paul II expressed it very well, when he said, out loud: «Look at Him!».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 10,28-33):

Abbé Fidel CATALÁN i Catalán

(Terrassa, Barcelona, Espagne)

For the past two weeks we have had this theme, 'I am the bread of life'. We started with the multiplication of the loaves and last Sunday we heard from the Lord that He is the bread of life. Today Jesus adds yet another element to this Bread, the Bread that came down from heaven. Next Sunday we will meditate on the same theme, with a different focus.  In order to live this week better, I invite you to welcome Jesus' message of the day and make it your own.

The readings of the day affirms that God takes care of us and will never abandon us. Elijah walked 40 days in the desert, in all disappointment and brokenness, in his deep solitude, totally abandoned by the people and authority, for a divine encounter, with the bread that the angel gave him. Whenever we set out on the road to God, God Himself will accompany us, as the angels accompanied the prophet Elijah. He who accompanied Abraham and Moses will also accompany us, if we listen to him and walk the path that Jesus has shown us. All those remained in the Lord, felt the presence of God. Let's not be broken or discouraged of deserts or darkness in our life, for God walks with us.

When Jesus went into the desert, he was accompanied by the Holy Spirit.  So in the desert Jesus listened to his Father. On the day of the transfiguration the disciples heard a voice saying, 'He is my beloved Son, listen to him. Mary will tell us at Cana, 'Do whatever he tells you.  God speaks to us through the events that happen, through the people around us, the trees and stars, the rivers and seas do speak to us the marvellous work of God. Right here God speaks to us and we listen to the Word of God attentively and in this celebration we promise to God that we will put into practice all that he asks us to do.

As we heard in the second reading, instructed by the Word of God, we put our lives back on track, on the right path towards the holiness that God desires in us. Be generous and tender with each other. Forgive one another, as God has forgiven you in Christ. Yes, seek to imitate God, since you are his beloved children. It is in this listening and practice that we imitate Christ and become Christians.  Many of haven't built this affective relationship with Jesus, as the beloved children of God.

If we think that everything is our work and our mastery, Jesus warns us by saying, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him to me. I have already told you, and today I am telling you again, that if we are here, it is not for our pleasure, but we are responding to the divine call. It is Jesus who invites us to a divine encounter, as He invited the prophet Elijah and Moses to the mountain. So it is important that we do not leave the church without receiving the divine message with in us.

Eat my flesh and drink my blood, do it in memory of me. Here we are remembering this event, 'the flesh given for the life of the world. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we are reminded that He broke the bread and gave to his disciples. A total rupture. He gives himself in the Eucharist. My friends, we come to church not for a human encounter, but for a divine encounter, by eating this bread and drinking this cup, we become Christ for our brothers and sisters. For this, Jesus invites us to believe and trust Him, to listen all that He says to us personally and to live the Eucharist in our daily lives, by putting everything in action. Amen.

Gospel text

(Mt 17,14-20):

A man approached Jesus, knelt before him and said, «Sir, have pity on my son who is an epileptic and is in a wretched state. He has often fallen into the fire and at other times into the water. I brought him to your disciples but they could not heal him». Jesus replied, «You, faithless and evil people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me». And Jesus commanded the evil spirit to leave the boy, and the boy was immediately healed.

The disciples then gathered around Jesus and asked him privately, «Why couldn't we drive out the spirit?». Jesus said to them, «Because you have little faith. I say to you: if only you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could tell that mountain to move from here to there, and the mountain would obey. Nothing would be impossible to you».

The Application

Is our faith so strong that we dare to say to the mountain 'get from here to there'? We must recognise that our faith is very often a convenience rather than a conviction. Since we have not built a personal relationship with Christ, our knowledge of the truth, as He died and rose again, suits us to celebrate the services the church offers, without understanding the meaning and the implication of the cult (liturgy) offered to God and to identify with so many people who call themselves believers. This is why, when faced with a personal failure in life, with illness or with a personal or relational breakdown, we get upset and refuse the faith that we have received from the Lord.

The faith we have, even if it is a gift from God, if we do not welcome it, as it should be, if we do not use it at the difficult moment of life, as a grace received freely, the grace received through this faith will be considered, like that servant who hid the talent that his Master gave him.

Whatever it is, everything changes in love, love for the Lord, which is best expressed in love for our neighbours. If this love itself becomes a golden rule in our daily lives, we will be able to accept even our enemies as our collaborators, and be able to work with them easily, for a good cause. In these actions, of our humanity, the gestures that are purely human, will be transformed as divine acts. These are the real mountains before us, which will be moved and as the Lord tells us, nothing will be impossible for us.

Action of the day: Just believe in God.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers:

Faith as a grain of mustard seed,

by Origen of Alexandria (185-254 AD)

"The mountains here spoken of, in my opinion, are the hostile powers that have their being in a flood of great wickedness, such as are settled down, so to speak, in some souls of various people. But when someone has total faith, such that he no longer disbelieves in anything found in holy Scripture and has faith like that of Abraham, who so believed in God to such a degree that his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6), then he has all faith like a grain of mustard seed. Then such a man will say to this mountain - I mean in this case the deaf and dumb spirit in him who is said to be epileptic - 'Move from here to another place.' It will move. This means it will move from the suffering person to the abyss. The apostle, taking this as his starting point, said with apostolic authority, 'If I have all faith, so as to remove mountains' (1 Corinthians 13:2). For he who has all faith - which is like a grain of mustard seed - moves not just one mountain but also more just like it. And nothing will be impossible for the person who has so much faith. Let us examine also this statement: 'This kind is not cast out except through prayer and fasting' (Mark 9:29). If at any time it is necessary that we should be engaged in the healing of one suffering from such a disorder, we are not to adjure nor put questions nor speak to the impure spirit as if it heard. But [by] devoting ourselves to prayer and fasting, we may be successful as we pray for the sufferer, and by our own fasting we may thrust out the unclean spirit from him." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON MATTHEW 13.7.19)
