Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 3,16-21):

Gospel text

(Jn 3,7-15):

Jesus said to Nicodemus, «Because of this, don't be surprised when I say: ‘You must be born again from above’. The wind blows where it pleases and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit». Nicodemus asked again, «How can this be?». And Jesus answered, «You are a teacher in Israel, and you don't know these things! Truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we witness to the things we have seen, but you don't accept our testimony. If you don't believe when I speak of earthly things, what then, when I speak to you of heavenly things? No one has ever gone up to heaven except the one who came from heaven, the Son of Man. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in him may have eternal life».

The Application

The thirst for divine elements is not a human desire, it is purely inspired and given by God. If Nicodemus came to seek Jesus, it was because God had invited him and he responded positively. Just like Nicodemus, we are search for God and for inner peace and joy. Many of us search God outside of us and fail to search Him inside of us.

Jesus tells us that we have all the means in us and  before us, if we want to discover God in our daily lives. The divine works are always visible in our salvation history and our fathers testify to this. We are invited with Nicodemus to discover God in Jesus, especially in Jesus on the Cross. The death and resurrection of Jesus on the Cross is a sign and a gift, for it is the Sacrament in perpetuity, a covenant made for eternity that grants us supernatural grace beyond our imagination. In truth, its the Holy Sprit who enactes in us to accomplish the divine will and we need to respond to its impulsions positievly.

Action of the day : Believe that God acts in you.

«You must be born again from above»

Fr. Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal

(Castelldefels, Spain)

Today, Jesus talks about the difficulty of foreseeing and knowing the action of the Holy Spirit: in fact, «it blows where it pleases» (Jn 3:8). He ties it in with the testimony He is also giving and the need to be born from above. «You must be born again from above» (Jn 3:7), clearly says the Lord; a new life is necessary to have access to eternal life. It is not enough just to get by to reach the Kingdom of Heaven; a new life, regenerated by the Spirit's action, is needed. Our professional, family, sporting, cultural, ludic and, most than all, pious life, must be transformed by our Christian feeling and by God's action. Everything must be transversely impregnated by his Spirit. Nothing, but nothing at all, should make us stay outside the renewal God's Spirit, offers us.

A transformation where Jesus Christ is the catalyst. He, who previously had to suffer the Crucifixion and then resurrect, is who will send us God's Spirit. He who has come from above. He who has shown his power and his goodness, through his many miracles. He who always makes his Father's will. He who has suffered to the last drop of blood for us. Thanks to the Spirit He will send us, we «shall be able to ascend to the Kingdom of Heaven; by the Spirit we obtain his filial adoption; by the Spirit we are allowed to call God our “Father”, to participate of Christ's Grace and to receive the right to share the eternal glory» (Saint Basil the Great).

Let us give the Spirit's action our warmest welcome, let us listen to him and let us apply his inspirations so that each one of us —wherever we should be— can set up a good lofty example that inflames Christ's light.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 3,7-15):

Abbé Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal

(Castelldefels, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 3,1-8):

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.”

Nicodemus said to him, “How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he?” Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

The Application

Nicodemus was one of the visible Pharisees who has accepted Jesus as someone sent by God. The more we get closer to Jesus, the better will be our understanding of divine realities. It is in our search for the divine realities that God reveals to us that our origin is not of this earth, simple biological formation, rather a divine creation. Once we discover our own divine identity, then there is a new birth, while living here on this earth. This new birth in God and in Spirit, is a pure divine gift which makes us a spiritual being, while remaining purely human in nature. Many of our catechumens do feel this new birth in their baptism. It is this life in Baptism that makes us capable of entering into the Kingdom of God.

Action of the day: Be proud of your baptism.

«No one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above»

Fr. Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, “a ruler of the Jews” (Jn 3:1) comes to Jesus. The Gospel says he does it by night: what would his comrades say should they find out? In Jesus' teachings we find a baptismal catechesis that, most surely, circulated in the Evangelist community.

A few days ago we were still celebrating the Paschal Vigil. An integral part of it was the Baptism celebration, which is the Passover, a step from death to life. The solemn benediction of water and the renewal of baptismal promises were key points of that holy night.

In the baptism ritual there is an immersion in water (death symbol) and an emergence from water (a new life image). We are submerged in sin and we come out of it renewed. This is what Jesus calls “to be born from above” or “to be born again” (cf. Jn 3:3). This is “to be born of water”, “to be born of the Spirit” or “of the blowing wind...”.

Water and Spirit are the two symbols used by Jesus. Both express the action of the Holy Spirit that purifies and grants life, cleans and encourages, calms the thirst and breathes, soften and speaks. Water and Spirit make a single thing.

But Jesus also says the flesh is in opposition to the Spirit: “What is born of flesh is flesh, and what is born of Spirit is spirit” (Jn 3:6). Carnal man is humanly born when he appears down here. But the carnal man is defeated by the spiritual man, who is spiritually born in the Baptism. Which means to be born anew and of above. A beautiful formula by Saint Paul could be our reflection and action motto, mostly in this Paschal time: “Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life” (Rm 6:3-4).

Amen.

Today, the second Sunday of Easter, we celebrate the Sunday of Divine Mercy. In order to better understand divine mercy, we are given this gospel which gathers all the apparitions of the risen Jesus. In all these apparitions, we will find certain elements that repeat systematically.

The fear and sadness of the disciples.  They are true and God understands our anxiety and worries perfectly. We are warmly welcomed by the Lord, as He did with His disciples, making a gesture that assured them, once again a step towards us.  He will call Mary as he called her always, to assure her that He is the One serached and the need to be searched in faith.

The identity of Jesus, a mistaken identity. Unfortunately, with our human intelligence, we cannot master the divine thought, not even its actions. We need patience and also personal teaching.  The disciples of Emmaus, were surprised to see a man who is totally disconneted with events of the day, and failed to understand thier pain and suffering. Jesus will listen to them patiently and help them to understand the truth.

Revelation and teaching. Jesus reveals Himself and gives them once again, as a great teacher, a divine teaching. They are called to see the salvation history in its totaly, not in a fragmented pieces. They were called to associate not to their feelings and emotions, rather to the divine truth, the will of the Father, the salvation of the whole world.

Transformation and mission. The person is transformed and given a mission.  Mary was called to be their first witness of the resurrection and made the apostle of the Apostles. The disciples of Emmaus will we a sign to the Apostles of the living presence of Jesus.
We have to ask ourselves, what is our transformation and what is the mission that the Lord has given us?

In this gospel we find ourselves once again with the Creator, the One who first breathed. Christ is therefore the new 'MAN' who has come to cleanse the world of its sin. "The Apostles are now empowered to complete the work that Christ began in his earthly life. "The Church continues this work of God, through its priests and faithful, not only in the sacrament of reconciliation, but also in every human encounter.
Like Thomas, everyone is asked to catch a glimpse of the Risen One, today especially in the universal Church, through his pierced side. People of good will will now discover Christ easily, yet mystically in faith, 'believing without seeing'. We are the signs of faith to men, to those of Thomas who are still seeking them. Once discovered, like Thomas, they too will proclaim the profession of faith, "My Lord and my God. "

On this Mercy Sunday, let us entrust all our brothers and sisters who sow hatred in the world and with all their victims. Let us pray for all those who work tirelessly for peace and reconciliation. Let us be missionaries of God's mercy in our daily lives. Amen.

Gospel text

(Mk 16,9-15):

When Jesus had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country. They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either. [But] later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.

The Application

We are a people of the divine covenant. We have received a mission at baptism from God, and we remain faithful to it: to be salt and light of the world. Let us proclaim this Good News of God's presence in us and through us. Just as Jesus himself was this Good News by his presence, so we must be it, by our own presence which not only nourishes life, but gives itself through life.

Action of the day: Believe

«Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature»

Fr. Jacques PHILIPPE

(Cordes sur Ciel, France)

Today, relying on the risen Jesus, we must rediscover the Gospel as the "Good News". The Gospel is not a law that tyrannizes us. Occasionally, we may have fallen into the temptation of thinking that non-Christians are more tranquil than us and do what they want, whereas we have to abide by a list of commandments. This is a merely superficial view of things.

Personally, one of my biggest concerns is that the Gospel may always be presented as good news, happy news that fills our hearts with joy and consolation.

The teaching of Jesus is certainly demanding, but Thérèse of the Child Jesus helps us to really perceive it as a good news, since for her the Gospel is nothing but the revelation of God’s tenderness, of God’s mercy with each one of His children, and it points out to the laws of life that lead to happiness. The center of Christian life is to welcome with appreciation the kindness and the goodness of God - revelation of his merciful love - and allow us to be transformed by this love.

The spiritual journey taken by Saint Thérèse, the "little way", is an authentic way of holiness, a path with room for all, made in such a way that no one can get discouraged, neither the humblest nor the, poorest or more sinner. Thérèse anticipates thus the Vatican II Council that strongly affirms that holiness is not an exceptional way, but a call to all Christians, which nobody should be excluded from. Up to the most vulnerable and miserable men can respond to the call to holiness.

This Holiness consists of a «way all about confidence and love». Thus, «it is your arms, Jesus, which are the lift to carry me to Heaven (…).You, my God, have exceeded my hope, and I would like to sing your mercies' (St. Thérèse of Lisieux).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 16,9-15):

Gospel text

(Jn 21,1-14):

Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish.

When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

The Application

Jesus takes care of the apostles and their faith. He felt that they were in need of His presence and assurence that He willingly obliged. This is the divine approach, even to day. God comes always to reveal His presence, and we need to believe this, because He is the same, as He was before. He takes pain to express His love, by calling them, with a paternal affection, ‘my children.’ He knows that we are week and we take time to understand the divine revelations.

We are like that Peter, very often letting ourselves be animated by emotions and feelings, particularly dependent on everything that is palpable and visible. Yet God accompanies us by giving us the signs of his presence. We need to fall back, with the confidance, when we fail to respond to God positively. Fortunately Peter was able to see the face of the Lord again after having denied Jesus, to discover the divine compassion.  Today he will listen to Him, one can say in his fidelity to his Master.  We have to imitate this faithfulness of Peter.

It is in this fidelity that he will respond to the elitists of his time, with the certainty of the presence of Jesus. God needs our witness, so that the world in which we live may discover in us his Word of love and compassion. The celebration of the Eucharist and our participation in it is already a good witness of our faith. Today we discover the palpable and visible presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, a permenant gift God gives to us daily.  It is the source of faith and the reason for our gathering, as it was in time of Apostles, after the resurrection of the Lord.

Action of the day : Be a witness of God’s presence to all whom you meet today.

«This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead»

(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, for the third time, Jesus reveals himself to his disciples after his rising. Peter has gone back to his old fisherman job and the others have decided to join him. It stands to logic that, if he was a fisherman before following Jesus, afterwards, he gets back to his old job; and there still are those who are surprised to see that it is not necessary to leave one's honest work to follow Christ.

That night they caught nothing! And when the day breaks and Jesus appears, they do not recognize him until He asks them for something to eat. When they tell him they have nothing, He just points out where they are to throw their net. And, even though fishermen seem to know all the answers and they had spent the night to no avail, they obey him. “The power of obedience! The lake of Tiberias had denied its fishes to Peter's nets. A whole night in vain. — Then, obedient, he lowered his net again to the water and they caught 'a huge number of fish'. — Believe me: the miracle is repeated each day” (Saint Josemaria).

The Evangelist points out “the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish” (Jn 21:11) but, in spite of being so many, the net was not torn. These are details to bear in mind, as Redemption, amid normal work, takes place with responsible obedience.

They “realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them” (Jn 21:12-13). He did the same with the fish. If we obey him we shall not lack either the spiritual or the material food. He taught this to his closest followers and Saint John Paul II said it too: “At the beginning of the new millennium, our hearts ring out with the words of Jesus when one day (…) he invited the Apostle to "put out into the deep" for a catch: "Duc in altum" (Lk 5:4). Peter and his first companions trusted Christ's words, and they caught a great number of fish" (Lk 5:6). Duc in altum! These words ring out for us today”.

With our obedience —like Our Lady Mary's obedience— we ask the Lord to go on giving his Church his apostolic fruits.
