(Mc 16,9-15): 

Ressuscité de grand matin, le premier jour de la semaine, Jésus apparut d'abord à Marie Madeleine, de laquelle il avait expulsé sept démons. Celle-ci partit annoncer la nouvelle à ceux qui, ayant vécu avec lui, s'affligeaient et pleuraient. Quand ils entendirent qu'il était vivant et qu'elle l'avait vu, ils refusèrent de croire. Après cela, il se manifesta sous un aspect inhabituel à deux d'entre eux qui étaient en chemin pour aller à la campagne. Ceux-ci revinrent l'annoncer aux autres, qui ne les crurent pas non plus. Enfin, il se manifesta aux Onze eux-mêmes pendant qu'ils étaient à table: il leur reprocha leur incrédulité et leur endurcissement parce qu'ils n'avaient pas cru ceux qui l'avaient vu ressuscité. Puis il leur dit: «Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez la Bonne Nouvelle à toute la création».

L’Application

Quelle est cette Bonne Nouvelle que nous aimerions annoncer aujourd’hui ? Qu’Il est ressuscité …….ou qu’Il est vivant…….et comment? Nous devons l’annoncer par notre vie de témoignage, en vivant notre vie pleinement, dans la joie et dans l’amour. Nous devons la vivre par nos engagements positifs, par un exemple, par un appel, ou un rappel, etc ? Nous devons l’annoncer, par une aide financière, si nous avons les moyens. Nous devons l’annoncer, par simplement par notre confinement, etc.

La Bonne nouvelle nous affirme que ce Dieu est toujours vivant et Il prend soins de nous. Ce Dieu nous écoute, nous accompagne, et nous protège. En tant que croyants, nous devons êtres, les porteurs de l’espérance. « Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez  la Bonne Nouvelle à toute la création. »

Aujourd'hui comptant sur Jésus ressuscité, nous devons redécouvrir l'Evangile comme une "bonne nouvelle". L'Evangile n'est pas une loi qui nous opprime. Nous avons pu parfois tomber dans la tentation de penser que ceux qui ne sont pas chrétiens sont plus tranquilles que nous et font ce qu'ils veulent, alors que nous nous devons obéir à une liste de commandements. C'est une vision des choses purement superficielle.

Personnellement, une de mes principales préoccupations est que l'Evangile se présente toujours comme une bonne nouvelle, une nouvelle joyeuse, qui nous remplit le cœur de joie et de consolation.

L'enseignement de Jésus est évidemment exigeant, mais Sainte Thérèse de l'Enfant Jésus nous aide à le percevoir réellement comme une bonne nouvelle, car pour elle l'Evangile n'est rien d'autre que la révélation de la tendresse de Dieu, de la miséricorde de Dieu pour chacun de ses enfants, et qu'il indique les lois de la vie qui mènent au bonheur. Le centre de la vie chrétienne est d'accueillir avec reconnaissance la tendresse et la bonté de Dieu – révélation de son amour miséricordieux – et de se laisser transformer par cet amour.

L'itinéraire spirituel pris par la petite Sainte Thérèse, le "petit chemin", est un authentique chemin de sainteté, un chemin ouvert à tous, fait de telle façon que personne ne puisse se décourager, ni les plus humbles ni les plus pauvres, ni les plus pécheurs. Thérèse est ainsi en avance sur le Concile Vatican II qui affirme avec certitude que la sainteté n'est pas un chemin exceptionnel, mais un appel pour tous les chrétiens, dont personne ne doit être exclu. Même le plus vulnérable et le plus misérable des hommes peut répondre à l'appel de la sainteté.

Cette sainteté consiste en un "chemin de confiance et d'amour". Ainsi, "l'ascenseur qui doit m'élever jusqu'au ciel ce sont tes bras, Jésus !" (…). Toi, Mon Dieu, tu as dépassé mes espérances, et je veux chanter tes miséricordes" (Sainte Thérèse de Lisieux).

Gospel text

(Jn 21,1-14): 

Jesus revealed himself to the disciples by the Lake of Tiberias. He appeared to them in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas who was called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two other disciples were together; and Simon Peter said to them, «I'm going fishing». They replied, «We will come with you», and they went out and got into the boat. But they caught nothing that night.

When day had already broken, Jesus was standing on the shore, but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus called them, «Children, have you anything to eat?». They answered, «Nothing». Then He said to them, «Throw the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some». When they had lowered the net, they were not able to pull it in because of the great number of fish. Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, «It's the Lord!». At these words, «It's the Lord», Simon Peter put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and jumped into the water. The other disciples came in the boat dragging the net full of fish; they were not far from land, about a hundred meters.

When they landed, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, «Bring some of the fish you've just caught». So Simon Peter climbed into the boat and pulled the net to shore. It was full of big fish —one hundred and fifty-three— but, in spite of this, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, «Come and have breakfast», and not one of the disciples dared ask him, «Who are you?», for they knew it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and He did the same with the fish. This was the third time that Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after rising from the dead.

The Application

Where do we go when we are disappointed and broken? Today Jesus is calling each and every one of us to come back to Him. Peter has chosen a different path and the Lord comes and meet him, while Peter remained empty hands. Surprisingly, Peter has decided to listen to the Lord. This gives us lot of hope in our brokenness and unfaithfulness. We can always go back to the Lord and He will welcome us with dignity.

Lord doesn’t get tired of trying and keeps coming back to us. It is in this divine goodness that our faith finds its root and source. Once our heart is filled with love, love for the Lord and for His people, then the Lord will show us the way. It’s John who has identified the Lord. The more we love Him, the faster will be our ability to identify the divine presence in us and in the world.

It is important that we understand the togetherness of the disciples. In our troubled moments of life, we should never be alone. We should remain with others. This togetherness, particularly in prayer, will do lot of charity. I would like to insist that during this lockdown time, let us give more importance to family prayers.

Action of the day: remain together.

«This was the third time that Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after rising from the dead»

Today, for the third time, Jesus reveals himself to his disciples after his rising. Peter has gone back to his old fisherman job and the others have decided to join him. It stands to logic that, if he was a fisherman before following Jesus, afterwards, he gets back to his old job; and there still are those who are surprised to see that it is not necessary to leave one's honest work to follow Christ.

That night they caught nothing! And when the day breaks and Jesus appears, they do not recognize him until He asks them for something to eat. When they tell him they have nothing, He just points out where they are to throw their net. And, even though fishermen seem to know all the answers and they had spent the night to no avail, they obey him. «O the power of the obedience. The lake of Tiberias was refusing its fish to Peter's nets. An entire night in vain. —But now, obedient, he returns the net to the water and they caught (...) a full load of fish. —Believe me: the miracle repeats itself daily» (Saint Josemaria).

The Evangelist points out «It was full of big fish —one hundred and fifty-three» (Jn 21:11) but, in spite of being so many, the net was not torn. These are details to bear in mind, as Redemption, amid normal work, takes place with responsible obedience.

They all «knew it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them» (Jn 21:12-13). He did the same with the fish. If we obey him we shall not lack either the spiritual or the material food. He taught this to his closest followers and John Paul II said it too: «When starting the new millennium, our heart reverberates with those words with which Jesus (...) invited the Apostle to put out into the deep, and let down the nets for a catch: ‘Duc in altum’ (Lk 5:4). Peter and the first disciples trusted Christ's word (…) and when they had this done, ‘they enclosed a great multitude of fishes’ (Lk 5:6). This word resounds for us to day too».

With our obedience —like Our Lady Mary's obedience— we ask the Lord to go on giving his Church his apostolic fruits.

Après cela, Jésus se manifesta encore aux disciples sur le bord du lac de Tibériade, et voici comment. Il y avait là Simon-Pierre, avec Thomas (dont le nom signifie: Jumeau), Nathanaël, de Cana en Galilée, les fils de Zébédée, et deux autres disciples. Simon-Pierre leur dit: «Je m'en vais à la pêche». Ils lui répondent: «Nous allons avec toi». Ils partirent et montèrent dans la barque; or, ils passèrent la nuit sans rien prendre.

Au lever du jour, Jésus était là, sur le rivage, mais les disciples ne savaient pas que c'était lui. Jésus les appelle: «Les enfants, auriez-vous un peu de poisson?». Ils lui répondent: «Non». Il leur dit: «Jetez le filet à droite de la barque, et vous trouverez». Ils jetèrent donc le filet, et cette fois ils n'arrivaient pas à le ramener, tellement il y avait de poisson. Alors, le disciple que Jésus aimait dit à Pierre: «C'est le Seigneur!». Quand Simon-Pierre l'entendit déclarer que c'était le Seigneur, il passa un vêtement, car il n'avait rien sur lui, et il se jeta à l'eau. Les autres disciples arrivent en barque, tirant le filet plein de poissons; la terre n'était qu'à une centaine de mètres.

En débarquant sur le rivage, ils voient un feu de braise avec du poisson posé dessus, et du pain. Jésus leur dit: «Apportez donc de ce poisson que vous venez de prendre». Simon-Pierre monta dans la barque et amena jusqu'à terre le filet plein de gros poissons: il y en avait cent cinquante-trois. Et, malgré cette quantité, le filet ne s'était pas déchiré. Jésus dit alors: «Venez déjeuner». Aucun des disciples n'osait lui demander: «Qui es-tu?». Ils savaient que c'était le Seigneur. Jésus s'approche, prend le pain et le leur donne, ainsi que le poisson. C'était la troisième fois que Jésus ressuscité d'entre les morts se manifestait à ses disciples.

L’Application

La vie en générale est dure. Très souvent nous sommes tentés de tout refaire, car nous ne voyons aucun fruit visible ou attendu. Et voilà, je m’en vais à la pêche.  Les autres suivent le chef. A la fin, ils se trouvent les mains vides, sans rien prendre. Il a fallu que le Seigneur vienne et donne la direction. Jésus revient encore une fois, aujourd’hui ce sera la troisième fois.

Dans cet évangile et très souvent dans les pro-apparitions du Seigneur, nous trouverons les disciples ensembles. Un bon exemple pour nous. Vivre ensembles est déjà un bon témoignage. Comme dans notre paroisse (St. Lazare, Marseille) tous les paroissiens prient ensembles vers 19h00, chacun chez soi, mais ensembles avec les autres.

Il leur dit: «Jetez le filet à droite de la barque, et vous trouverez». Même aujourd’hui le Seigneur nous donne les consignes. Il faut l’écouter, car nous verrons les fruits étonnants. Attention ! Si nous voulons nous partir, Il nous laissera, car Dieu nous accorde cette liberté. Certes, Il va revenir vers nous, pourtant la décision sera là-nôtre.

Jésus dit alors: «Venez déjeuner». Le Seigneur nous invite à sa table, une table déjà dressée. Voilà sa générosité, Dieu dans sa bonté nous invite à son festin. Nous ne sommes pas ses serviteurs, nous sommes ses amis, ses enfants, les bienaimés du Père. Notre espérance se font dans cette bonté divine.

Aujourd'hui pour la troisième fois depuis sa résurrection, Jésus se manifeste aux disciples. Pierre est retourné à son travail de pêcheur et les autres l'ont accompagné. S'il était pêcheur avant de se joindre à Jésus, il est normal qu'il continue après, alors que certains s'étonnent que, pour suivre le Christ, l'on ne soit pas tenu d’abandonner un travail honnête.

Cette nuit-là, ils ne prirent rien! Et quand au lever du jour, Jésus apparaît, ils ne le reconnaissent que lorsqu'il leur demande quelque chose à manger. Quand ils répondent qu'ils n'ont rien, Il leur indique où ils doivent jeter le filet. Et bien que les pêcheurs soient au courant de tout, et qu'ils aient travaillé sans résultat toute la nuit, ils obéissent. «Pouvoir de l'obéissance! —Le lac de Génésareth, a refusé ses poissons aux filets de Pierre. Toute la nuit en vain. —Maintenant, obéissant, il remet le filet à l'eau et voici qu'ils prennent (...) une grande quantité de poissons. —Crois-moi: le miracle se reproduit chaque jour» (Saint Josemaría).

L'évangéliste nous raconte qu'il y avait «cent cinquante-trois gros poissons» (cf. Jn 21:11) mais que, malgré cette quantité, le filet ne se rompit pas. Ce sont des détails à prendre en considération; la Rédemption s'est faite avec une obéissance responsable, au beau milieu des tâches quotidiennes.

Tous savaient «que c'était le Seigneur. Jésus s'approche, prend le pain et le leur donne» (Jn 21:12-13). Ainsi que les poissons. Que ce soit la nourriture spirituelle ou la matérielle, elle ne nous manquera pas si nous obéissons. Il l'apprend à ses disciples plus prochains et nous le redit par l'entremise de Jean Paul II: «Au début du nouveau millénaire (…) dans notre cœur résonnent à nouveau les paroles par lesquelles Jésus, (…) invita l'Apôtre à «avancer au large» pour pêcher: «Duc in altum» (Lc 5:4). Pierre et ses premiers compagnons firent confiance à la parole du Christ et jetèrent leurs filets. «Et l'ayant fait, ils capturèrent une grande multitude de poissons» (Lc 5,6). Cette parole résonne aujourd'hui pour nous.

Avec une obéissance, comme celle de Marie, nous demandons au Seigneur de continuer d'octroyer à toute l'Église des fruits d'apostolat.

Gospel text

(Lk 24,35-48): 

The two disciples told what had happened on the road and how Jesus made himself known when He broke bread with them. As they went on talking about this, Jesus himself stood in their midst. And He said to them, «Peace to you». In their panic and fright they thought they were seeing a ghost, but He said to them, «Why are you upset and why do such ideas cross your mind? Look at my hands and feet and see that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves that a ghost has no flesh and bones as I have». As He said this, He showed his hands and feet. In their joy they didn't dare believe and were still astonished. So He said to them, «Have you anything to eat?», and they gave him a piece of broiled fish. He took it and ate it before them.

Then Jesus said to them, «Remember the words I spoke to you when I was still with you: Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms had to be fulfilled». Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And He went on, «You see what was written: the Messiah had to suffer and on the third day rise from the dead. Then repentance and forgiveness in his name would be proclaimed to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Now you shall be witnesses to this».

The Application

Jesus comes again and again to assure His disciples. This is exactly what He does even today to each and every one of us. Since we are overtaken by our own pains and sufferings, just like Mary Madeleine and the disciples of Emmaus, we find difficult to identify the divine presence. However, Jesus is there very close to us, through events and persons.

The disciples give us a very good example, even in their difficult times. They are together in prayer and console one another, by sharing their experience. This mutual support and sharing forms the best expression of our humanity. We are all asked to imitate them.

Jesus orients them towards the Holy Scriptures, which can still open our intelligence.  We should always fall back to them. They are the very supportive elements that God has placed before us. We shouldn’t be selective in reading them, but should read them with a spirit of prayer and contemplation.

In every difficult moment of life, Jesus brings to each and every one of our homes His peace, the Peace of the Father, the peace of the Resurrected ONE. We are called to be the witness of the peace and through our joyful life, that others may discover the peace and the Joy that the resurrection brings to our homes. 

Action of the day: Cherish the peace that the Lord brings to our home.

«Peace to you»

Today, the risen Christ meets again his disciples with his desire of peace: «Peace to you» (Lk 24:36). This is how He makes disappear the fears and forebodings the Apostles had accumulated during their days of passion and loneliness.

He is not a ghost but totally real; at times, however, fright in our lives is taking shape as if it were the only reality possible. At times also, it is our lack of faith and of interior life which is changing things: fright becomes reality and Christ gradually vanishes from our life. The presence of Christ in our Christian life, instead, lightens up our existence, especially in those places no human explanation may account for. Saint Gregory of Nazianzen tells us: «We should be ashamed to dispense with the salutation of peace; salutation the Lord left with us when He was going to leave this world. Peace is a name and a substantial thing emanating from God, as the Apostle said to the Phillipians: ‘The peace of God’; and that it is from God is also shown when he tells the Ephesians: ‘He is our peace’».

It is the resurrection of Christ which gives a meaning to all our mishaps and sufferings, which helps us to recover our peace of mind and calm us down in the darkness of our life. All other small lights we may find in our life are only meaningful under this Light.

In the Gospel we read: «Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms had to be fulfilled...»: and again we read «He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures» (Lk 24:44-45), as He had already done with the disciples at Emaus. The Lord also wants us to understand the meaning of the Scriptures for our life; He wants our poor heart to become a flaming heart, like his: with the explanation of the Scriptures and the chunk of bread, the Holy Eucharist. In other words: the Christian task is to see his story to become a story of salvation as He wants us to.

(Lc 24,35-48): 

A leur tour, ils racontaient ce qui s'était passé sur la route, et comment ils l'avaient reconnu quand il avait rompu le pain. Comme ils en parlaient encore, lui-même était là au milieu d'eux, et il leur dit: «La paix soit avec vous!». Frappés de stupeur et de crainte, ils croyaient voir un esprit. Jésus leur dit: «Pourquoi êtes-vous bouleversés? Et pourquoi ces pensées qui surgissent en vous? Voyez mes mains et mes pieds: c'est bien moi! Touchez-moi, regardez: un esprit n'a pas de chair ni d'os, et vous constatez que j'en ai». Après cette parole, il leur montra ses mains et ses pieds. Dans leur joie, ils n'osaient pas encore y croire, et restaient saisis d'étonnement. Jésus leur dit: «Avez-vous ici quelque chose à manger?». Ils lui offrirent un morceau de poisson grillé. Il le prit et le mangea devant eux.

Puis il déclara: «Rappelez-vous les paroles que je vous ai dites quand j'étais encore avec vous: Il fallait que s'accomplisse tout ce qui a été écrit de moi dans la loi de Moïse, les Prophètes et les Psaumes». Alors il leur ouvrit l'esprit à l'intelligence des Écritures. Il conclut: «C'est bien ce qui était annoncé par l'Écriture: les souffrances du Messie, sa résurrection d'entre les morts le troisième jour, et la conversion proclamée en son nom pour le pardon des péchés à toutes les nations, en commençant par Jérusalem. C'est vous qui en êtes les témoins».

L’Application

En ce moment de confinement, nous pouvons apprendre des disciples du Seigneur à choisir notre propre comportement.

• Ils sont ensembles et prient.
• Ils se soutiennent en partageant leur expérience.
• Jésus leur apporte la Paix, la Paix de Ressuscité.
• Le Seigneur les oriente vers les écritures sacrées et ils l’écoutent.
• Jésus leur force de partager, non seulement leur expérience, mais aussi il partager avec eux la table. Le partage n’est ni conditionné, ni limité.   
• Nous tous, comme les disciples du Seigneur sommes appelés à être témoins de la résurrection, et à être les témoins de la joie que Le Seigneur nous apporte.

«La Paix soit avec vous!»

Aujourd'hui le Christ ressuscité salue à nouveau les disciples et leur souhaite la paix: «La Paix soit avec vous!» (Lc 24:36). Il efface ainsi les craintes et les pressentiments qui avaient assailli les Apôtres pendant les jours de passion et de solitude.

Jésus n'est pas un esprit, il est bien réel, mais, parfois, la peur s'empare de nous et devient l'unique réalité. D'autres fois, c'est le manque de foi et de vie intérieure qui transforment les choses: la peur devienne réalité et le Christ s'efface de nos vies. Au contraire, la présence de Christ dans la vie du chrétien écarte les doutes et illumine notre existence, spécialement ces recoins qu'aucune explication humaine ne saurait pas éclaircir. Saint Grégoire de Nazianze nous exhorte: «Nous devrions avoir honte de ne pas faire le salut de la Paix que le Seigneur nous a laissé lorsqu'il allait partir de ce monde. La paix est un nom et une chose savoureuse en provenance de Dieu, d'après ce que l'Apôtre dit aux Philippiens: ‘La paix de Dieu’; et qu'elle vient de Dieu il le confirme lorsque il dit aux Éphésiens: ‘Il est notre paix’».

La résurrection de Christ donne leur sens à toutes les vicissitudes et à tous les sentiments, elle nous permet de récupérer le calme et de trouver la paix dans les ténèbres de notre vie. Les autres petites lumières que nous rencontrons ici-bas n'ont un sens qu'en cette Lumière.

«Il fallait que s'accomplisse tout ce qui a été écrit de moi dans la loi de Moïse, les Prophètes et les Psaumes». Alors il leur ouvrit l'esprit à l'intelligence des Écritures» (Lc 24:44-45), comme il l'avait déjà fait avec les disciples d'Emmaüs. Le Seigneur veut aussi nous ouvrir l'intelligence des Écritures; il désire transformer notre pauvre coeur en un coeur aussi ardent que le sien, grâce à l'explication des Écritures et à la fraction du Pain, l'Eucharistie. En d'autres termes, la tâché du chrétien est de voir que le Seigneur veut transformer son histoire en histoire du salut.

Gospel text

 (Lk 24,13-35): 

Two disciples of Jesus were going to Emmaus, a village seven miles from Jerusalem, and they talked about what had happened. While they were talking and wondering, Jesus came up and walked with them, but their eyes were held and they did not recognize him.

He asked, «What is this you are talking about?». The two stood still, looking sad. Then one named Cleophas answered, «Why, it seems you are the only traveller in Jerusalem who doesn't know what has happened there these past few days». And he asked, «What is it?». They replied, «It is about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, you know, mighty in word and deed before God and the people. But the chief priests and our rulers sentenced him to death. They handed him over to be crucified. We had hoped that he would redeem Israel. It is now the third day since all this took place. It is true that some women of our group have disturbed us. When they went to the tomb at dawn, they did not find his body; they came to tell us that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that Jesus was alive. Some friends of our group went to the tomb and found everything just as the women had said, but they did not see him». He said to them, «How dull you are, how slow of understanding! You fail to believe the message of the prophets. Is it not written that the Christ should suffer all this and then enter his glory?». Then starting with Moses and going through the prophets, He explained to them everything in the Scriptures concerning himself.

As they drew near the village they were heading for, Jesus made as if to go farther. But they prevailed upon him, «Stay with us, for night comes quickly. The day is now almost over». So he went in to stay with them. When they were at table, he took the bread, said a blessing, broke it and gave each a piece. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; but He vanished out of their sight. And they said to each other, «Were not our hearts filled with ardent yearning when He was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures?».

They immediately set out and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and their companions gathered together. They were greeted by these words: «Yes, it is true, the Lord is risen! He has appeared to Simon!». Then the two told what had happened on the road and how Jesus made himself known when he broke bread with them.

The Application

I would like to invite you all to meditate on curtain points which may help us to grow in spiritually, without being discouraged in our difficulty.

They didn’t recognize Him earlier and their eyes were opened in the breaking of the bread? Why then they couldn’t identify Jesus and what has really happened then and now?

The patience of Jesus to explain to them without anger or disappointment. He is there even today to accompany us without judging, in our daily life to reveal to us, the divine mystery. We need to give Jesus the space and time.

Rest with us. We need this openness to newness and strange things which we very often ignore or become selective. We have to welcome Jesus, who comes very often in the form of pains and joy, disappointments and encouragements, from enemies and friends, in betrayal and uplifting etc., if we wish that He remains with us.

The change of darkness into light. They found surprisingly, others united in prayer. It’s important that we need to be together, then be alone in a troubled time. It is important to come back to the original place than running away. What’s our approach in our daily life?

Today we are reassured by the Gospel that Jesus is alive and continues to be the center around which the disciples' community is built. The gathering of the community, the dialog with brothers and sisters who share the same faith, the reading of the Word of God, the love shared and expressed through fraternity and service, is precisely the ecclesial context in which the disciples can encounter the Resurrected.

The disciples filled with grief, couldn't even imagine that that stranger was in fact their Master, now resurrected. But they felt «an ardent yearning» in their hearts (cf. Lk 24:32), when He talked, «explaining» the Scriptures. The light of the Word softened their hearts and «their eyes were opened» (Lk 24:31).

The story of the disciples of Emmaus is useful as a guide to us in the long journey through a path of doubts, afflictions and sometimes even bitter disillusionments; the Divine traveler continues to be our companion who introduces us, by explaining the Scriptures, to the comprehension of God's mysteries. Upon the fulfillment of this encounter the light of the Word is followed by the light that emerges from the «Bread of Life», through which Christ fulfills perfectly His promise that He would be with us «always, until the end of the age» (Mt 28:20).

The Holy Father Benedict XVI explains that «The proclamation of the Lord's Resurrection lightens up the dark regions of the world in which we live».

(Lc 24,13-35): 

Le même jour, deux disciples faisaient route vers un village appelé Emmaüs, à deux heures de marche de Jérusalem, et ils parlaient ensemble de tout ce qui s'était passé. Or, tandis qu'ils parlaient et discutaient, Jésus lui-même s'approcha, et il marchait avec eux. Mais leurs yeux étaient aveuglés, et ils ne le reconnaissaient pas.

Jésus leur dit: «De quoi causiez-vous donc, tout en marchant?». Alors, ils s'arrêtèrent, tout tristes. L'un des deux, nommé Cléophas, répondit: «Tu es bien le seul de tous ceux qui étaient à Jérusalem à ignorer les événements de ces jours-ci». Il leur dit: «Quels événements?». Ils lui répondirent: «Ce qui est arrivé à Jésus de Nazareth: cet homme était un prophète puissant par ses actes et ses paroles devant Dieu et devant tout le peuple. Les chefs des prêtres et nos dirigeants l'ont livré, ils l'ont fait condamner à mort et ils l'ont crucifié. Et nous qui espérions qu'il serait le libérateur d'Israël! Avec tout cela, voici déjà le troisième jour qui passe depuis que c'est arrivé. A vrai dire, nous avons été bouleversés par quelques femmes de notre groupe. Elles sont allées au tombeau de très bonne heure, et elles n'ont pas trouvé son corps; elles sont même venues nous dire qu'elles avaient eu une apparition: des anges, qui disaient qu'il est vivant. Quelques-uns de nos compagnons sont allés au tombeau, et ils ont trouvé les choses comme les femmes l'avaient dit; mais lui, ils ne l'ont pas vu». Il leur dit alors: «Vous n'avez donc pas compris ! Comme votre coeur est lent à croire tout ce qu'ont dit les prophètes! Ne fallait-il pas que le Messie souffrît tout cela pour entrer dans sa gloire?». Et, en partant de Moïse et de tous les Prophètes, il leur expliqua, dans toute l'Écriture, ce qui le concernait.

Quand ils approchèrent du village où ils se rendaient, Jésus fit semblant d'aller plus loin. Mais ils s'efforcèrent de le retenir: «Reste avec nous: le soir approche et déjà le jour baisse». Il entra donc pour rester avec eux. Quand il fut à table avec eux, il prit le pain, dit la bénédiction, le rompit et le leur donna. Alors leurs yeux s'ouvrirent, et ils le reconnurent, mais il disparut à leurs regards. Alors ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: «Notre coeur n'était-il pas brûlant en nous, tandis qu'il nous parlait sur la route, et qu'il nous faisait comprendre les Écritures?».

A l'instant même, ils se levèrent et retournèrent à Jérusalem. Ils y trouvèrent réunis les onze Apôtres et leurs compagnons, qui leur dirent: «C'est vrai! le Seigneur est ressuscité: il est apparu à Simon-Pierre». A leur tour, ils racontaient ce qui s'était passé sur la route, et comment ils l'avaient reconnu quand il avait rompu le pain.

Aujourd'hui, l'Evangile nous assure que Jésus est vivant et qu'il est toujours le centre à partir duquel se construit la communauté de ses disciples. C'est précisément dans ce contexte ecclésiastique- dans une rencontre communautaire, dans le dialogue avec nos frères qui partagent notre foi, dans l'écoute communautaire de la parole de Dieu, dans l'amour partagé par des actes fraternels et de service aux autres- que les disciples peuvent expérimenter leur rencontre avec Jésus ressuscité.

Les disciples accablé de tristes pensées, n'ont jamais imaginé que cet étranger fut précisément leur Maître qui était déjà ressuscité. Pourtant, leur cœur «brûlait» (cf. Lc 24,32), lorsqu'Il leur parlait et leur expliquait les Ecritures. La lumière de la Parole enlevait la dureté de leur cœur et «leurs yeux s'ouvrirent» (Lc 24,31).

L'icône des disciples d'Emmaüs nous sert de guide sur la longue route de nos doutes, de nos inquiétudes et parfois même de nos rudes déceptions, le divin Voyageur est toujours notre compagnon de route afin de nous faire comprendre, en interprétant les écritures, les mystères de Dieu. Quand la rencontre devient plénitude, la lumière de la Parole fait suite à la lumière qui jaillit du «Pain de vie» par lequel le Christ accomplit de manière décisive sa promesse: «Je suis avec vous tous les jours jusqu'à la fin du monde» (Mt 28,20).

 (Jn 20,11-18): 

Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she bent down to look inside; she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, and the other at the feet. They said, «Woman, why are you weeping?». She answered, «Because they have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him». As she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize him. Jesus said to her, «Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?». She thought it was the gardener and answered him, «Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him». Jesus said to her, «Mary». She turned and said to him, «Rabboni» —which means, “Master”. Jesus said to her, «Do not cling to me; you see I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them: ‘I am ascending to my Father, who is your Father, to my God, who is your God’». So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, «I have seen the Lord, and this is what he said to me».

The Application

Mary Magdalene, who loved the Lord, wanted to return to Him who is worthy of Him, always keeping her sadness of having lost Him brutally and unjustly. Her love was so deep that she forgot herself and sought her beloved. Staring at the place where the body of her beloved was laid, in all sadness she wept bitterly, for today there is nothing left for her, so that she could mourn, as she should, and complete all that she began and reached today to demonstrate her love. Many of us are feeling the same, particularly in this lockdown.

In her deep sadness she is no longer herself, and she sees nothing but her bitterness. Yet before her own eyes, the angels have taken their own place, covering everything possible from His head to His feet, empty as a desert, as was foreseen right from the beginning of creation, the promised salvation, He is truly risen. They clothed themselves in white, a sign of peace, which shined in the tomb like a bright light. Everything went unnoticed for this lover. Very often we live in the same way in our sadness and brokenness.  

She was not abandoned by the Lord, whom she loved and was looking for today. He came back to her, and he called her 'Mary', as he always called her. She heard the voice, a voice she was so used to, that she thought she has lost. She didn't want to lose Him again and she will hold Him as hard and intensely as she can, more than ever before. Many of us have the same approach in life. We hold on something as if it gives life. The day has come for us to give life to others, give hope to others. We have to stop seeking, rather start to giving.

It is here that Jesus is going to entrust her with a mission so dear to Him, the mission that His Father entrusted to Him, and He did not want to lose even 'one'. She is going to run, leaving the Lord there, with the certainty of having him for an eternity and for ever, towards his disciples, to announce to them that He has truly risen and I had seen him. What a testimony and what love! Today I invite you to express our love for the Lord like Her, with certainty, and let us welcome the mission that He is going to entrust to us.

Action of the day: be a messenger of the Lord.

Today, in the figure of Mary of Magdala we may contemplate two levels of acceptance of our Savior: the first one, imperfect; complete, the second one. According to the first one, Mary appears as the most sincere of Jesus' disciples. She follows him, unmatched Master; heroically, she sticks to Jesus, crucified because of his love; she looks for him, beyond death, buried and missing. How full of admirable and humble submission to her “Lord” are her two exclamations that, as two unique pearls, the evangelist John has kept for us: «They have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him» (Jn 20:13); «Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him»! (Jn 20:15). History has seen few disciples as loyal and full of affection as Mary of Magdala.

Notwithstanding, the good news of this Tuesday, octave of Easter, far exceeds all ethical uprightness and religious faith in an admirable Jesus, but in the last instance, death, to take us to an ambience of faith in Jesus Christ Resurrected. A Jesus Christ that, in the first moment, taking her from the level of imperfect faith, asks Mary of Magdala: «Woman, why are you weeping?» (Jn 20:15) To which, with myopic eyes, she replies to as a farmer only interested in her own anxiety would; a Jesus, now, that in a second and definitive moment, calls her by her name: «Mary»! to move and shake her up with resurrection and life, that is, with Himself, Resurrected and Alive Forever. Outcome? Mary of Magdala believer and Mary of Magdala, apostle: «So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’» (Jn 20:18).

It is not infrequent today to find many Christians that cannot clearly see what will come after this life and who, therefore, have doubts about Jesus' resurrection. Am I among them? On the other hand, there are too those Christians who have enough faith to follow Jesus privately, but who are afraid of apostolically proclaiming it. Do I belong to these ones? If this were the case, let us tell him, as Mary of Magdala did: «Master!», let us cling to his feet and let us go to our brothers and tell them: —The Lord has risen and I have seen him!

Marie Madeleine restait là dehors, à pleurer devant le tombeau. Elle se penche vers l'intérieur, tout en larmes, et, à l'endroit où le corps de Jésus avait été déposé, elle aperçoit deux anges vêtus de blanc, assis l'un à la tête et l'autre aux pieds. Ils lui demandent: «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu?». Elle leur répond: «On a enlevé le Seigneur mon Maître, et je ne sais pas où on l'a mis». Tout en disant cela, elle se retourne et aperçoit Jésus qui était là, mais elle ne savait pas que c'était Jésus. Jésus lui demande : «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu? Qui cherches-tu?». Le prenant pour le gardien, elle lui répond: «Si c'est toi qui l'as emporté, dis-moi où tu l'as mis, et moi, j'irai le reprendre». Jésus lui dit alors: «Marie!». Elle se tourne vers lui et lui dit: «Rabbouni!» ce qui veut dire: «Maître» dans la langue des Juifs. Jésus reprend: «Cesse de me tenir, je ne suis pas encore monté vers le Père. Va plutôt trouver mes frères pour leur dire que je monte vers mon Père et votre Père, vers mon Dieu et votre Dieu». Marie Madeleine s'en va donc annoncer aux disciples: «J'ai vu le Seigneur, et voilà ce qu'il m'a dit».

L’Application

Marie Madeleine qui a aimé le Seigneur a voulu Lui rendre qui est digne de Lui, gardant toujours sa tristesse de l’avoir perdu brutalement et injustement. Son amour était si profond qu’elle s’oubliait et cherchait son bien aimé. Fixant son regard où on déposait le corps de son bienaimé, en toute tristesse elle pleure amèrement, car aujourd’hui, il ne reste rien pour elle, pour qu’elle puisse faire son deuil, comme il faut et achever tout ce qu’elle a commencé et à parvenir aujourd’hui pour démontrer son amour.

Dans sa tristesse profonde elle n’est plus elle-même, et elle n’aperçoit rien que son amèrement. Pourtant, devant son regard, les anges ont pris leur propre place, couvrant tout ce qui était possible, de la tête jusqu’à ses pieds, vide comme un désert, comme il était prévu dès le commencement de la création, le salut promis, Il est vraiment ressuscité. Ils se sont habillés blanc, un signe de la paix, qui a brillé le tombeau, comme une lumière éclatante. Tout se passait inaperçu pour cette amoureuse. Très souvent nous vivons pareillement dans notre tristesse, déchirement.

Elle n’était pas abandonnée par le Seigneur qu’elle cherchait. Il reviendra vers elle, et il l’appela, ‘Marie’, comme il l’appelait toujours. Elle a bien entendu la voix, une voix qu’elle était si habitué, qu’elle croyait perdu. Elle n’a pas voulu Le perdre encore une fois et elle va Le tenir le plus fort possible, plus que jamais. C’est ici jésus va lui confier une mission si chère à Lui, la mission que son Père Lui a confiée, n’a pas voulu perdre, même pas ‘une.’ Elle va courir, en laissant le Seigneur là-bas, avec la certitude de l’avoir pour une éternité et pour jamais, vers ses disciples, pour les annoncer, qu’il est vraiment ressuscité et je l’avais vu. Quel témoignage et quel amour ! Aujourd’hui, je vous invite à vous exprimer votre amour pour le Seigneur, et accueillons la mission qu’Il va nous confier.

Aujourd'hui sur le visage de Marie-Madeleine, nous pouvons apercevoir deux degrés d'acceptation de notre Sauveur: le premier, imparfait; le second plénier. Dès le premier, Marie se montre disciple très sincère de Jésus. Elle le suit, maître incomparable; héroïque, elle s'attache à lui, qui est crucifié par amour; elle le cherche, au-delà de la mort, enseveli et disparu. Qu'elles sont pleines d'admirable dévouement à leur “Seigneur”, ces deux exclamations que l'évangéliste Jean nous a laissées, perles incomparables: «On a enlevé le Seigneur mon Maître, et je ne sais pas où on l'a mis» (Jn 20:13); «Si c'est toi qui l'as emporté, dis-moi où tu l'as mis, et moi, j'irai le reprendre»! (Jn 20:15). Peu de disciples a contemplé l'histoire si attachés et loyaux comme la Madeleine.

Cependant, la bonne nouvelle d'aujourd’hui, de ce mardi de l'octave de Pâques, dépasse infiniment n'importe quelle excellence morale, n'importe quelle foi religieuse dans un Jésus admirable, mais, finalement, mort. Elle nous transporte dans le domaine de la foi dans le Résussiscité. Jésus dans un premier temps, s'adresse à Madeleine, en se plaçant au niveau de la foi imparfaite. Il lui demande: «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu?» (Jn 20:15) Avec des yeux myopes, elle lui répond comme à quelqu'un qui s'intéresserait à son désarroi. Jésus, ensuite, l'appelle par son nom: «Marie!». Il la frappe au point de la faire frémir de résurrection et de vie, c'est-à-dire, de Lui-même, le Ressuscité, le Vivant pour toujours. Et voici Madeleine croyante et Madeleine apôtre «s'en va donc annoncer aux disciples: ’J'ai vu le Seigneur, et voilà ce qu'il m'a dit’» (Jn 20:18).

Aujourd'hui, nombre des chrétiens ne voient pas clairement l'au-delà de leur vie et, doutent de la résurrection de Jésus. Sui-je comme eux? Beaucoup de chrétiens ont la foi, suivent Jésus dans l'intimité, mais craignant de le proclamer. Suis-je comme eux? Alors, disons-lui, comme Marie-Madeleine: «Maître!», saisissons ses pieds et allons trouver nos frères pour leur dire: —Le Seigneur est ressuscité et je l'ai vu!

Gospel text

(Mt 28,8-15): 

The women left the tomb at once in holy fear, yet with great joy, and they ran to tell the news to the disciples. Suddenly, Jesus met them on the way and said, «Peace». The women approached him, embraced his feet and worshiped him. But Jesus said to them, «Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to set out for Galilee; there they will see me».

While the women were on their way, the guards returned to the city and some of them reported to the chief priests all that had happened. The chief priests met with the Jewish authorities and decided to give the soldiers a good sum of money, with this instruction, «Say that his disciples came by night while you were asleep, and stole the body of Jesus. If Pilate comes to know of this, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble». The soldiers accepted the money and did as they were told. This story has circulated among the Jews until this day.

The Application

I wish you all  a blessed EASTER

The joy and the fear dance together in the heart of these women. However, this dance will be certainly dominated by the joy of meeting the Lord, the Resurrected ONE. It is in this very encounter with the Lord, they become the missionaries, the apostles of the resurrection. Certainly, strange for us to understand the choice of these women to announce the resurrection. This is the way God functions. He elevates some from nothing, to make us to understand the depth of their love for the Lord and they are certainly recompensated for this sincere love, beyond their expectations.

Jesus announces the peace, the divine peace, which these women weren’t searching, but desperately in need of the present time. God knows what to give and when to give, provided we understand and accept these graces, because it comes not on our expected terms and conditions, rather, in a strange and unexpected time or from unexpected and from least expected persons.

Once we welcome and we aware of this grace from God, there is a perfect adoration, a Eucharistic adoration of holding the Lord, the fear of missing Him once again. To our surprise, He will ask us to get up and march, go and announce the good news to all, particularly His beloved ones. Don’t be afraid to be small, or little ones, or of nothing. Simply go and do what I have asked you to do.

What a mission to accomplish and they will certainly accomplish this mission entrusted to them. They will give hope to the Apostles of the Lord. They will give them a new spare of life, a thread to hold on, little fine message to carry on. That all they were in need and the rest; the Lord will take care of.

We have lived this Pascal event in a special way. It’s a history which was imposed and will be cherished by many of us, for generations to come. God wished to give us this special gift and we were called to make use of this time in a wonderful way. There will be many more such encounters we will have in these days, not only of our salvation history, but also of our own personal of the da. I invite you all to have the spirit of Emmaus disciples, so that at the end, we could witness just like them, ‘our heart wasn’t burning?’

Action of the Day: Be open to the divine grace.

Today, the joy of resurrection has made brave messengers out of those women that went to Christ's tomb. The angel's announcement of the Master's resurrection filled their hearts with «great joy». And, immediately after, they “ran out”, to tell the news to the Apostles. They simply could not stand idle, their hearts bursting should they not let the disciples know about the great news. Paul's words resound in our souls: «For the love of Christ constrains us» (2Cor 5:14).

Jesus contrives to a “chance meeting” with Mary of Magdala and the other Mary —this is how Christ rewards their courage to look for him early in the morning—, and He does it too with all men and women of this world. Not only, because of his Incarnation, He has, in a certain way, become a man too.

Women's reactions before the Lord express the deepest attitudes of human beings before He who is our Creator and Redeemer: submission —«embraced his feet» (Mt 28:9)— and worship. What a lesson for all of us regarding what our attitude ought to be always before Christ in the Eucharist!

«Do not be afraid» (Mt 28:10), Jesus tells the pious women. Afraid of our Lord? Never, as He is the Love of loves! Afraid to lose him? Yes, because we are well aware of our feebleness. This is why we embrace his feet so strongly. As the Apostles in the stormy sea and as the disciples of Emaus when they beg him: Lord, do not leave us!

And the Master sends the women to his disciples so they can see him too. This is also our task, and our divine mission, since the day of our baptism: to proclaim Christ all over the World «so that everybody may find Christ, so that Christ may join each one of us in our journey through life, with the power of the truth (...) contained in the mystery of Encarnation and Redemption, with the power of the love He irradiates» (John Paul II).
