Gospel text

(Mk 16,9-15):

When Jesus had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country. They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either. [But] later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.

The Application

We are a people of the divine covenant. We have received a mission at baptism from God, and we remain faithful to it: to be salt and light of the world. Let us proclaim this Good News of God's presence in us and through us. Just as Jesus himself was this Good News by his presence, so we must be it, by our own presence which not only nourishes life, but gives itself through life.

Action of the day: Believe

«Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature»

Fr. Jacques PHILIPPE

(Cordes sur Ciel, France)

Today, relying on the risen Jesus, we must rediscover the Gospel as the "Good News". The Gospel is not a law that tyrannizes us. Occasionally, we may have fallen into the temptation of thinking that non-Christians are more tranquil than us and do what they want, whereas we have to abide by a list of commandments. This is a merely superficial view of things.

Personally, one of my biggest concerns is that the Gospel may always be presented as good news, happy news that fills our hearts with joy and consolation.

The teaching of Jesus is certainly demanding, but Thérèse of the Child Jesus helps us to really perceive it as a good news, since for her the Gospel is nothing but the revelation of God’s tenderness, of God’s mercy with each one of His children, and it points out to the laws of life that lead to happiness. The center of Christian life is to welcome with appreciation the kindness and the goodness of God - revelation of his merciful love - and allow us to be transformed by this love.

The spiritual journey taken by Saint Thérèse, the "little way", is an authentic way of holiness, a path with room for all, made in such a way that no one can get discouraged, neither the humblest nor the, poorest or more sinner. Thérèse anticipates thus the Vatican II Council that strongly affirms that holiness is not an exceptional way, but a call to all Christians, which nobody should be excluded from. Up to the most vulnerable and miserable men can respond to the call to holiness.

This Holiness consists of a «way all about confidence and love». Thus, «it is your arms, Jesus, which are the lift to carry me to Heaven (…).You, my God, have exceeded my hope, and I would like to sing your mercies' (St. Thérèse of Lisieux).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 16,9-15):

Gospel text

(Jn 21,1-14):

Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish.

When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

The Application

Jesus takes care of the apostles and their faith. He felt that they were in need of His presence and assurence that He willingly obliged. This is the divine approach, even to day. God comes always to reveal His presence, and we need to believe this, because He is the same, as He was before. He takes pain to express His love, by calling them, with a paternal affection, ‘my children.’ He knows that we are week and we take time to understand the divine revelations.

We are like that Peter, very often letting ourselves be animated by emotions and feelings, particularly dependent on everything that is palpable and visible. Yet God accompanies us by giving us the signs of his presence. We need to fall back, with the confidance, when we fail to respond to God positively. Fortunately Peter was able to see the face of the Lord again after having denied Jesus, to discover the divine compassion.  Today he will listen to Him, one can say in his fidelity to his Master.  We have to imitate this faithfulness of Peter.

It is in this fidelity that he will respond to the elitists of his time, with the certainty of the presence of Jesus. God needs our witness, so that the world in which we live may discover in us his Word of love and compassion. The celebration of the Eucharist and our participation in it is already a good witness of our faith. Today we discover the palpable and visible presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, a permenant gift God gives to us daily.  It is the source of faith and the reason for our gathering, as it was in time of Apostles, after the resurrection of the Lord.

Action of the day : Be a witness of God’s presence to all whom you meet today.

«This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead»

+ Fr. Joaquim MONRÓS i Guitart

(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, for the third time, Jesus reveals himself to his disciples after his rising. Peter has gone back to his old fisherman job and the others have decided to join him. It stands to logic that, if he was a fisherman before following Jesus, afterwards, he gets back to his old job; and there still are those who are surprised to see that it is not necessary to leave one's honest work to follow Christ.

That night they caught nothing! And when the day breaks and Jesus appears, they do not recognize him until He asks them for something to eat. When they tell him they have nothing, He just points out where they are to throw their net. And, even though fishermen seem to know all the answers and they had spent the night to no avail, they obey him. “The power of obedience! The lake of Tiberias had denied its fishes to Peter's nets. A whole night in vain. — Then, obedient, he lowered his net again to the water and they caught 'a huge number of fish'. — Believe me: the miracle is repeated each day” (Saint Josemaria).

The Evangelist points out “the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish” (Jn 21:11) but, in spite of being so many, the net was not torn. These are details to bear in mind, as Redemption, amid normal work, takes place with responsible obedience.

They “realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them” (Jn 21:12-13). He did the same with the fish. If we obey him we shall not lack either the spiritual or the material food. He taught this to his closest followers and Saint John Paul II said it too: “At the beginning of the new millennium, our hearts ring out with the words of Jesus when one day (…) he invited the Apostle to "put out into the deep" for a catch: "Duc in altum" (Lk 5:4). Peter and his first companions trusted Christ's words, and they caught a great number of fish" (Lk 5:6). Duc in altum! These words ring out for us today”.

With our obedience —like Our Lady Mary's obedience— we ask the Lord to go on giving his Church his apostolic fruits.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 21,1-14):

+ Abbé Joaquim MONRÓS i Guitart

(Tarragona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 24,35-48):

The disciples of Jesus recounted what had taken place along the way, and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them.

He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”

The Application

Jesus takes care of his disciples so that they are well informed and educated. It is important that He does this because He has entrusted the key to the Kingdom to Peter. He must know how to use it. To do this, He removes fear and gives peace.

Jesus would like his disciples to announce the Good News with the certainty and conviction that the Master is still alive. That is why the Lord wanted to participate in their daily life, including the breaking of bread and praise.

They became witnesses of his events before and after the resurrection, because everything they heard before, they saw after the resurrection of the Lord. In order for peace to come to the world, He gave the price of His life, His life on the Cross. That is why conversion of heart is the foundation of faith in Christ. Without this conversion of heart we cannot have peace and without peace we cannot proclaim the Good News.

Action of the day: Be a person of peace.

«Peace be with you»

Fr. Joan Carles MONTSERRAT i Pulido

(Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the risen Christ meets again his disciples with his desire of peace: “Peace be with you.” (Lk 24:36). This is how He makes disappear the fears and forebodings the Apostles had accumulated during their days of Passion and loneliness.

He is not a ghost but totally real; at times, however, fright in our lives is taking shape as if it were the only reality possible. At times also, it is our lack of faith and of interior life which is changing things: fright becomes reality and Christ gradually vanishes from our life. The presence of Christ in our Christian life, instead, lightens up our existence, especially in those places no human explanation may account for. Saint Gregory of Nazianzus urged us: “We should be ashamed to dispense with the salutation of peace; salutation the Lord left with us when He was going to leave this world. Peace is a name and a substantial thing emanating from God, as the Apostle Paul said to the Philippians: ‘The peace of God’; and that it is from God is also shown when he tells the Ephesians: ‘He is our peace’.”

It is the resurrection of Christ which gives a meaning to all our difficulties and sufferings, which helps us to recover our peace of mind and calm us down in the darkness of our life. All other small lights we may find in our life are only meaningful under this Light.

In the Gospel we read: «Everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled...”: and again we read “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Lk 24:44-45), as He had already done with the disciples at Emmaus. The Lord also wants us to understand the meaning of the Scriptures for our life; He wants our poor heart to become a flaming heart, like his: with the explanation of the Scriptures and the chunk of bread, the Holy Eucharist. In other words: the Christian task is to see how He makes his story become a story of salvation.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 24,35-48):

Abbé Joan Carles MONTSERRAT i Pulido

Gospel text

(Lk 24,13-35):

Now that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.

He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.

As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”

So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Application

The disciples of  Emmaus invite us to discover Jesus in the breaking of bread. So caught up in the events of the past few days, they found themselves totally caught up and disoriented. These behaviours are purely human and divinely accepted. God, who walks with us, even in difficult times, accompanies us discreetly without making revealing his presence or his accompaniment. We must have patience and know how to put all our trust in this God who loves.

Stay with us' was not an invitation from the disciples, it was in truth from the Lord. We must always stay with the Lord, especially in the night. It is in this trust in God and our ability to share that God makes himself visible to humanity.

If we remain faithful to God's love, one day we will say with certainty, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, 'Were not our hearts burning? For this we must be open, welcoming and listen to the other who accompanies us in silence.

Action of the day : Believe in the divine accompaniment.

«Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?»

Fr. Luis PERALTA Hidalgo SDB

(Lisboa, Portugal)

Today we are reassured by the Gospel that Jesus is alive and continues to be the center around which the disciples' community is built. The gathering of the community, the dialog with brothers and sisters who share the same faith, the reading of the Word of God, the love shared and expressed through fraternity and service, is precisely the ecclesial context in which the disciples can encounter the Resurrected.

The disciples filled with grief, couldn't even imagine that that stranger was in fact their Master, now resurrected. But they felt “an ardent yearning” in their hearts (cf. Lk 24:32), when He talked, «explaining» the Scriptures. The light of the Word softened their hearts and “their eyes were opened” (Lk 24:31).

The iconic story of the disciples of Emmaus is useful as a guide to us in the long journey through a path of doubts, afflictions and sometimes even bitter disillusionments; the Divine traveler continues to be our companion who introduces us, by explaining the Scriptures, to the comprehension of God's mysteries. Upon the fulfillment of this encounter the light of the Word is followed by the light that emerges from the “Bread of Life”, through which Christ fulfills perfectly His promise that He would be with us “always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20).

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI explains that “The proclamation of the Lord's Resurrection lightens up the dark regions of the world in which we live.”

Gospel text

(Jn 20,11-18):

Mary of Magdala stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the Body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She thought it was the gardener and said to him, “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,” which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and then reported what he had told her.

The Application

To know or discover God, we do not have to be believers or even Christians, because in true human love, God reveals Himself and in this revelation, He raises us up. Mary and Martha reveal to us this truth of human love that is capable of transforming us from a mere man to a servant of God. We can say with certainty that the love that Martha and Mary had for the Lord was only a human and ordinary love, has today become a true divine love, an expression of her profession of faith that she has already demonstrated by pouring the perfume on the Lord's feet.

Today's Gospel tells us that she still holds Jesus as her Master, and she is called to proclaim him, not as a Master, but as the Risen One, so long awaited by the people of God. This is an apostolic commitment that she has not realised. She will do it in obedience and faithfulness, which we are called to imitate.

Every expression of faith are very often a simple expression of human love, which is transformed by God as the profession of faith. The presence of Jesus was invisible to her, however, in her love for the Lord, Jesus reveals to her, His affection, by calling her by name, Mary. She, in her own way, will respond to Him in love, which she had always reciprocated. God wishes to establish this communion with us. It is in this deep personal communion of us with God that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is made visible to the humanity. Come what may, let us remain faithful to God’s love so that others may see in us the profession of faith of Mary of Magdala, « I have seen the Lord. ».

Action of the day : Be human in your relationship.

«Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’»

Today, in the figure of Mary Magdalene, we can contemplate two levels of acceptance of our Savior: the first is imperfect, the second, is complete, unconditional. From the beginning, Mary appears to us as a most sincere disciple of Jesus. She follows him, the incomparable Teacher; she is heroically adherent to him who was crucified for love; she looks for him, beyond death, his burial and disappearance. How impregnated with admirable dedication to their "Lord" are the two exclamations that the Evangelist St John has preserved for us, like incomparable jewels: "They have taken the body of my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him" (Jn 20:13); «Sir, if you have taken Him, tell me where you have put it, and I will take it»! (Jn 20:15). Few disciples have contemplated history, so affectionately and loyally as Mary of Magdala.

However, the good news of today, this Tuesday of the Eighth Week of Easter, infinitely surpass all ethical goodness and religious faith in a Jesus who one can admire, but who is ultimately dead; and they take us to the realm of faith in the Risen One. Jesus who, at first, leaving her on the level of imperfect faith, addresses the Magdalene asking her: "Woman, why are you crying?" (Jn 20:15) and to which she, with shortsightedness responds as one would to a gardener who is interested in her distress. Jesus, now, in a second definitive moment, challenges her with her name: "Mary!" and he shock her to the core speaking to her about resurrection and life, that is, of Himself, as the Risen One, living forever. The result? Mary Magdalene the believer and Mary Magdalene the apostle: "It was Mary Magdalene and she told her disciples that she had seen the Lord" (Jn 20:18).

Today is not uncommon for Christians who do not see clearly beyond this life and, therefore, who doubt the resurrection of Jesus. Am I among them? Similarly, there are many Christians who have enough faith to follow him privately, but who fear to proclaim him apostolically. Am I part of that group? If this were the case, like Mary Magdalene, let us say to him: "Master! Let us embrace ourselves at his feet and go to meet our brethren and say:" The Lord has risen and I have seen him!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 20,11-18):

+ Abbé Antoni ORIOL i Tataret

(Vic, Barcelona, Espagne)
