Gospel text

(Mt 9,14-15):

The disciples of John came to Jesus with the question, «How is it that we and the Pharisees fast on many occasions, but not your disciples?». Jesus answered them, «How can you expect the wedding guests to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast».

The Application

We are looking for means to grow. Prayer, almsgiving and fasting are the means available to us, so that we can grow in faith and become true children of God.

Before we choose one, we must discern how we want to apply it and how God would like us to apply it. Is the fast that we practice in these days right before God, does it help us, does it bring us closer to God? Does our fasting help others to grow, or it is self-oriented fasting ?  The time of Lent has arrived, the time of fasting has also arrived. Which fast have we chosen, and why have we chosen it?

Action of the day : Can you do the fasting of evil thooughts ?

«Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast»

Fr. Xavier PAGÉS i Castañer

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today the first Friday of Lent, having experienced the fasting and abstinence of Ash Wednesday, we have attempted to offer our fasting and the prayer of the Holy Rosary, for the Peace, that our World needs so badly. We are willing to take care of this Lenten exercise, our Church, Mother and Teacher, is asking us to abide by, and to remember it was the same Lord who said: «Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast» (Mt 9:15). We have the desire to experience it, not just as the fulfillment of an obligation which is mandatory for us, but —most of all— as the possibility to find the spirit which will let us live this Lenten practice while helping us in our spiritual improvement.

By seeking this deep feeling, we can ask ourselves: which is the true fasting? Already, prophet Isaiah, in today's first reading, tells us which is the fasting God appreciates: «Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard» (Is 58:7-8). God likes and expects from us whatever is taking us towards a true love for all our brothers.

Every year, the Holy Father John Paul II wrote us a message for Lent. One of these messages, under the motto «There is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving» (Acts 20:35); helped us to discover the very same charitable dimension of our fasting, which, from the bottom of our heart, allows us to prepare for Easter Time, in an effort to identify ourselves, more and more, with Christ's love which took him to die in the Cross for us. In short, «what every Christian ought to do all the time, he ought to do it now more carefully and more devotedly» (Saint Leo the Great, pope).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 9,14-15):

Abbé Xavier PAGÉS i Castañer

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 9,22-25):

Jesus said, «The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life». Jesus also said to all the people, «If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me. For if you choose to save your life, you will lose it, and if you choose to lose your life for my sake, you will save it. What does it profit you to gain the whole world while you destroy or damage yourself?».

The Application

Very often the Lenten season is associated with penitence, fasting, suffering, denying oneself, carrying the cross, etc. Though they are not wrong, it will be a terrible tragedy, if the finality of this act is disassociated from the love of God and of our brothers and sisters.  In which way it helps you to build a good and a healthy relationship with God and with your brothers and sisters, by not taking the meat in these days, or avoiding an act, for example?

Let us not be mistaken about the purpose of the Cross of Jesus! Jesus did suffer on the cross; however, He didn’t choose the cross to suffer, rather to show us how much He loves us. It is by emptying His own divinity that He chose to divinize the humanity, as God had created it.  The Incarnation has restored, through death and resurrection, the dignity that God granted to humanity from the beginning of creation. If the Cross is disassociated from the salvific plan of God, then it’s of no value.

Jesus invites us, particularly in these days, to participate in His divinity. If we want to participate in his divinity, we must abandon our humanity, just as Jesus lived his life on earth. How can we be filled with the Holy Spirit if we do not know how to empty ourselves, especially the human spirit, our own interiority, which is good in itself, so that the divinity may take us completely?

Action of the day: Learn to accept a surgical intervention for a good health.

«If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me»

Fr. Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM

Today is the first Thursday of Lent. The ashes our Church laid yesterday on our forehead are still fresh; and are meant to remind us of a forty days journey. In the Gospel, Jesus, shows us two routes: the way of the cross he must undergo, and our own way to follow him.

His path is the Way of the Cross and that of death, but also that of His Glory: «The Son of Man must suffer many things (...), and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. » (Lk 9:22). The route we must take is, essentially, the same one Jesus took, and He shows us how to follow it: «If any man would come after Me...» (Lk 9:23).

Hugging his Cross, Jesus complied with the Will of His Father; as for us, carrying ours on our shoulders, we follow him in his Way of the Cross.

The path of Jesus is summarized in three words: suffering, dying, raising from the dead. Three aspects constitute our own footpath too (two attitudes and the essence of our Christian vocation): Self-Denial, taking up our cross every day of our life and following Jesus.

If we do not deny ourselves and do not take up our cross, we are only seeking to affirm and be ourselves; we want «to save our life», as Jesus says. Yet, by wanting to save it, we will lose it. On the other hand, those who, because of Jesus, will not strive to avoid their suffering and the cross, will save their lives. It is the resulting paradox of our following Jesus: «For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?» (Lk 9:25).

Our Lord's words, closing today's Gospel, tremendously shook Saint Ignatius and sparked off his conversion: «What would happen if I would do just as saint Francis and saint Dominic did?». If only, in this Lent, the same words would help us to reach our conversion, too...!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 9,22-25):

Abbé Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Lent is a special time for Christians because it recharges and renews our life of Faith, hope and charity. This moment, offered every year  to believers, invites us to go to the desert, not alone, but with the Holy Spirit. This walk towards the desert is a pilgrimage towards our own interiority, the true sanctuary, the dwelling place of God. In these 40 days, we will be accompanied by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.  Certainly with the temptations to be overcome, through fidelity to the commandment of love, through our baptismal and spiritual commitments, including family and social duties, we will reach our destination, willed by God, voluntarily welcomed in joy and freedom. In the Lenten message, the Holy Father tells us, "Behold, we go up to Jerusalem. In this message he tells us that this time helps us to renew our faith, hope and charity.

To do this, today's Gospel proposes three important steps. We must learn to control ourselves, learn to take care of the body, choose the necessary food, etc. The Gospel will call it 'fasting' or abstinence. To feed man according to our needs, not by our desires. If we are led to that desire which is right before God, let us commit ourselves, putting the common desire before personal desires. Good physical health, inspired in faith, directs us towards mental health, which obliges us to live with the other as our brothers and sisters, sharing our life with them.

Sharing is a fruit of good mental health, which makes us discover not only the suffering of our brothers and sisters, but also our capacity to alleviate their suffering. Let us be sure in faith, my brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, with the Five Loaves that we have, and if we dare to share them with our brothers and sisters as the widow of Sarepta who fed the prophet Elijah, the Lord will multiply them and leave with us 12 baskets of bread. How can we travel this path towards resurrection without being charitable? When we say, let us be charitable, let our charity not be limited by the sharing of our material goods, which is easier than others, like by listening, by spending qulitative  time and by presence, etc. The Gospel will name it as almsgiving.

The third stage is that of prayer, the source of everything, our intimate relationship with God. Prayer was the Lord's favourite moment. We see him very often in prayer, united with his Father. Let us not reduce the prayer with the recitation of words, of simple supplications. Prayer is a silent listening, and simply being with God in profound joy and peace. Let us look at the Father in Jesus, and let us allow ourselves to be looked at by God. This gaze takes its perfection from the gaze of Jesus crucified, a gaze full of love and compassion, a gaze that forgives everything and everyone, even if we do not deserve it. Let us contemplate it and make it our own.  It is in prayer that our mental health finds its meaning and perfection. It’s in prayer we discover the neccesity to take care of our body.

Everything is in Him, through Him, and for Him. If we take care of our bodies, it is not because it is beautiful to take care of it, rather, it is God's dwelling place, God's sanctuary. Sharing is not because your brother suffers or needs you, rather Christ who lives in him suffers with him. This Samaritan, isn't the one sent by the Father, so that you can discover Him and serve Him in him?

Our fasting of uncessary and evil elements in life, and our fasting of good things which doesn’t help us to get closer to God, our fasting of anything that separates us from the love of God, will have a meaning in promoting them in this lenten season. Anyother fasting, for the sake of fasting, may loose all its credibility of pratcing them in this lenten moment.

I share with you the beginning of the Holy Father's message, and wish that you read the complete texte  as soon as you have the opportunity. "As we travel the Lenten journey, which leads us to the Easter celebrations, we remember the One who loved us "becoming obedient unto death and death from the cross" (Phil 2:8). In this time of conversion, we renew our faith, we draw the "living water" of hope and we receive with open hearts the love of God that makes us brothers and sisters in Christ. On Easter Night, we will renew the promises of our baptism to be reborn as new men and women through the intervention of the Holy Spirit. The Lenten itinerary, like the Christian itinerary, is already entirely placed under the light of the Resurrection, which inspires the feelings, attitudes and choices of those who want to follow Christ. "Good Lent!

Gospel text

(Mk 8,14-21):

The disciples had forgotten to bring more bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. Then Jesus warned them, «Keep your eyes open and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod». And they said to one another, «He saw that we have no bread». Aware of this, Jesus asked them, «Why are you talking about the loaves you are short of? Do you not see or understand? Are your minds closed? Have you eyes that don't see and ears that don't hear? And do you not remember when I broke the five loaves among five thousand? How many baskets full of leftovers did you collect?». They answered, «Twelve». «And having seven loaves for the four thousand, how many wicker baskets of leftovers did you collect?». They answered, «Seven». Then Jesus said to them, «Do you still not understand?».

The application

Lord, you are the source of life and without you our life is in ruins. Yet we men pay no attention to you, particularly to what you  tell us and we fail to understand, even little things. We do see what  you do and sadly, we don't perceive the message of compassion and love that you propagate in our society. You tell us today, "Beware! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod".

Help us, Lord, so that this 'leaven which corrupts mind, body and soul be identified and avoided. Let all unnecessary fears and anxiety' do not enter into our thoughts, as long as you are with us.  By your grace,  we resist the temptation to know and taste everything that existe in this world. Give us wisdom and the gift of discernment, so that we may seek, by all and in all, your will and whatever is able to please You. Amen.

Action of the day: Be watchful and vigilant.

«Have you eyes that don't see and ears that don't hear?»

+ Fr. Lluís ROQUÉ i Roqué

Today, we see that Jesus —as often happened with the Apostles— was not always understood.

At times it is difficult. We may see wonders, be explained things crystal clear or receive a good doctrine. No matter, we deserve His scolding: «Do you not see or understand? Are your minds closed?» (Mk 8:17).

We would like to tell Him we understand Him and that our mind is not closed, but we do not dare to. Like the blind of the parable, we may ask Him, to listen to our pleading: «Lord, that I may see again» (Lk 18,41), to have faith and see; and, as the psalmist says: «Give me an eagerness for your decrees; do not inflict me with love for money!» (Ps 119:36) to have a good disposition, to listen, receive the Word of God and make it fruitful.

Today and always, it would be also good, to pay attention to Jesus' warning: «Keep your eyes open and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees» (Mk 8:15); the truth is so far away... We seem “fanatical believers”, who do not understand «God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth» (Jn 4:23). We must also beware «of the yeast of Herod» which is proud, despotic, sensual, and only wants to see and feel Jesus to take pleasure in.

But, how to keep away from this “yeast”?. Well, just by doing a continuos, intelligent and pious evaluation of the Word of God which will let us grow individually «pious as infants: but not ignorants, because each one of us must try, to the best of his abilities, to seriously and scientifically study the faith (...). That is, to have the piety of children coupled with the doctrinal knowledge of a theologian» (Saint Josemaria).

Thus, enlighted and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, alerted and led by the good Shepherds, stimulated by all the faithful Christians, we shall believe what we ought to believe and we shall do what we ought to do. First, though, we must have the “desire” to see: «The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us» (Jn 1:14), visible, palpable; and the “desire” to listen: it was the Virgin Mary who was “the bait” that made Jesus say: «blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it» (Lk 11:28).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 8,14-21):

The Pharisees came and started to argue with Jesus. Hoping to embarrass him, they asked for some heavenly sign. Then his spirit was moved. He gave a deep sigh and said, «Why do the people of this present time ask for a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this people». Then he left them, got into the boat again and went to the other side of the lake.

The Application

God always gives us the signs for us to discover Him in our daily life. However, if we do not learn to look at the world, with an eye of faith, we cannot discover Him. Faith is a gift, however, we must know how to welcome it. In truth, it was not God who refused to give a sign to these Pharisees. It was to them that Jesus was sent and they did not want to believe in Jesus, not even in his works. They did not understand, in order to see, they had to learn to open their eyes.

Today, it looks like the Gospel does not say too much about Jesus or about us. «Why do the people of this present time ask for a sign?» (Mk 8:12). Commenting on this episode of Jesus' life, Pope John Paul II says: «Jesus invites us to discern between the words and the deeds testimony of (or a “sign of”) the arrival of God's Kingdom». It seems the Pharisees questioning Jesus are lacking the capacity or the will to discern that sign which —in fact— is the entire manifestation, deeds and words, of the Lord.

Nowadays, Jesus is also asked for some heavenly signs: that He let us see his presence in our world or that He tells us in a clear cut manner how we are to behave. The Roman Pontiff makes us see that Jesus' negative to give a sign to the Jews —and, consequently, to us, too— is due to the fact He wants to change the «world logics, oriented to look for signs confirming man's desire of assertiveness and power». The Pharisees did not want just any sign, but one showing Jesus as the Messiah they wanted. They were not waiting for the Messiah coming to save them, but for the Messiah who was to give them the certainty they were doing things the right way.

In short, when the Jews in Jesus' time, or to-day's Christians, ask —one way or another— for a sign, what we are actually asking for, is for God to act according to our own way, that which we think is better and which also stands by our way of thinking. But God, who is omniscient and omnipotent (this is why in The Lord's Prayer we say “your will be done”), has His own ways which, more often than not, we find it difficult to understand. But He, who allows us to find him when we are truly looking for him, if we beg him to enlighten us, He will give us to understand which are his ways and how we can, today, distinguish his signs.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 8,11-13):
