Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 8,11-13):

Abbé Jordi POU i Sabater

(Sant Jordi Desvalls, Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mk 8,1-10):

A great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So Jesus called his disciples and said to them, «I feel sorry for these people because they have been with me for three days and now have nothing to eat. If I send them to their homes hungry, they will faint on the way; some of them have come a long way». His disciples replied, «Where in a deserted place like this could we get enough bread to feed these people?». He asked them, «How many loaves have you?». And they answered, «Seven».

Then He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves and giving thanks, he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute. And they distributed them among the people. They also had some small fish, so Jesus said a blessing and asked that these be shared as well. The people ate and were satisfied. The broken pieces were collected, seven wicker baskets full of leftovers. Now there had been about four thousand people. Jesus sent them away and immediately got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

Application

I am sure that God hasn’t given me the gift of miracle. At the same time, this miracle is a good lesson for me, to live my Christian faith it its fulness, certainly with my limits. The multiplication of the bread affirms three important points that will help me to be with Jesus in my daily life et to express my faith in a concrete way.

Firstly, we have a God full of compassion and he will always be beside us, supporting and accompanying us. On our part, we can easily show our compassion through our positive commitment towards charitable activities.

Secondly, He needs us and our cooperation. Let us lend our hands, with the talents and gifts that God has already granted us, so that this accompaniment can be carried out in a perfect and timely manner.

Third, by becoming aware that we have a small means in the face of a great need, however, let us be sure that with this small means, we can bring about a great change in the lives of our suffering brothers and sisters.

Action of the day: Be generous in time and in person.

«They have nothing to eat»

Fr. Carles ELÍAS i Cao

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, in our times of inclemency and anxiety, Jesus also calls us to tell us he feels «sorry for these people» (Mk 8:2). Today, with the peace process in crisis, fear, apathy, banality and evasion may abound: «and now have nothing to eat».

Whom is the Lord calling to? The text says: «So Jesus called his disciples» (Mk 8:1), that is, He calls me, not to send them home hungry, to give them something to eat. Jesus sympathizes with them —this time in heathen land— because they are hungry.

But, alas! Sheltered in our little world, we say we can do nothing about it. «Where in a deserted place like this could we get enough bread to feed these people?» (Mk 8:4). Where shall we find a true and firm word of hope while knowing the Lord will be with us every day till the end of time? How can we tell the believers and the non-believers that violence and death are no solution?

Today, the Lord simply asks us how many loaves have we. Whatever we have, this is what He needs. The text says «seven», a symbol for the heathen, just as twelve was a symbol for the Jewish people. The Lord wants to reach us all —this is why the Church, from its Catholicism, wants to recognize itself— and is asking for your help. Give Him your prayer: it is a loaf of bread! Give Him the Eucharist you have celebrated: it is another loaf of bread! Give Him your decision to reconcile with those you love, with those that have offended you: still another loaf of bread! Give Him your sacramental reconciliation with the Church: another loaf! Give Him your little sacrifice, your fasting, your solidarity: and still another loaf! Give Him your love for his Word that soothes and gives you strength: more bread! Anyway, give Him whatever He asks from you, though you may believe it is not worthwhile.

As St. Gregory of Nyssa says: «He who splits his bread with the poor becomes a part of He who, for us, wanted to be poor. The Lord was poor; do not be afraid of poverty».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 8,1-10):

Or, ils étaient environ quatre mille.

Abbé Carles ELÍAS i Cao

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mk 7,31-37):

Again Jesus set out; from the country of Tyre, passed through Sidon and, skirting the sea of Galilee, he came to the territory of Decapolis. There a deaf man who also had difficulty in speaking was brought to him. They asked Jesus to lay his hand upon him. Jesus took him apart from the crowd, put his fingers into the man's ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then, looking up to heaven, he groaned and said to him, «Epheta», that is, be opened.

And his ears were opened, his tongue was loosened, and he began to speak clearly. Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone, but the more he insisted on this, the more they proclaimed it. The people were completely astonished and said, «He has done all things well; he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak».

Application

Jesus did not come to perform miracles. Yet he was open and adopted to the needs of the people. We need this openness and to know how to respond positively to the needs of all.

Today's Gospel presents us not only with divine generosity, but also with the cooperation of all. This is the missionary aspect; bringing everyone to the Lord.

The third element is very important, that of witness. We live in a society that is weak and is always looking for the palpable and visible elements to believe. We know that the spiritual elements are not palpable either. However, with our life, full of love and mercy, living the Gospel in joy, we can bring this palpable and visible element to the world, so that it may believe that God is alive and that He is with us. Saint John in his letter tells us, that others may know through our life of love that we are Christians.

Action of the day: Be a witness of divine love and mercy.

«He has done all things well»

+ Fr. Joan MARQUÉS i Suriñach

(Vilamarí, Girona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel presents us with a miracle of Jesus: he makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. The people was astonished and said: «He has done all things well» (Mk 7:37).

This is Jesus' biography as narrated by his contemporaries. A short but complete biography. Who is this Jesus? He is who has done all things well. In the double sense of the word: in the what and the how, in the substance and the manner. He is who has only done good deeds, and who has done them well, perfectly and properly finished. Jesus is a person that does everything well, because He does only good works, and those He does, He delivers well finished. He does not leave anything unfinished; nor does He leave it to be finished later on.

—Why don't you also try to leave everything ready now: your prayers; treating your family and other people; your work; the apostolate; your diligence to develop yourself both spiritually and professionally... Be demanding with yourself, and be also demanding, softly, but demanding, with those depending upon you. Do not tolerate any shoddiness. God dislikes them and they bother your fellowmen. Do not take this attitude just to pretend, nor because this procedure is the most profitable one, even from a human point of view; do it because God does not like “bad” works nor “good” things done badly. The Holy Scripture asserts: «The works of God are perfect» (Deut 32:4). And the Lord, through Moses, tells the People of Israel: «Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf» (Lev 22:20). Ask for the maternal help of the Virgin Mary, as Jesus also did.

Saint Josemaria offers us the secret to succeed: «Do what you should and watch what you do».
Is this how you behave?

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 7,31-37):

+ Abbé Joan MARQUÉS i Suriñach

Our Lady of Lourdes

http://joeterrycmf.com/2021/02/our-lady-of-lourdes.html

Gospel text

(Mk 7,24-30):

Jesus went to the border of the Tyrian country. There He entered a house and did not want anyone to know He was there, but He could not remain hidden. A woman, whose small daughter had an evil spirit, heard of him and came and fell at his feet. Now this woman was a pagan, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter. Jesus told her, «Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs». But she replied, «Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the crumbs from the children's bread». Then Jesus said to her, «You may go your way; because of such a reply the demon has gone out of your daughter». And when the woman went home, she found her child lying in bed and the demon gone.

The Application

I do not wish to enter into the dialogue of Jesus and this lady. Rather, I would like to discover the depth of this woman's faith and how Jesus responded to this expression of faith. It was faith that brought this lady to Jesus and it was this same faith that helped her to stay with Jesus and to persist in her request.  For a baptised person, faith is the source and strength of daily life, especially in difficult times.

Very often we imagine that all our supplication is the true prayers and they deserve to be fulfilled. One can easily cite them as the prayer for peace and reconciliation in the world, which we can say without any hesitation, which are a just prayer according to the divine will. At the same time we forget the preservation and commitment of each and every one of us, and our own cooperation with God, so that peace and reconciliation can find an important place in our society.  Since we have a God who gives great importance to the personal freedom of each and every one of us, He cannot act in a dictatorial way (which we would like), so that we can have peace. In order that our prayer, which is right according to the divine will, may be fulfilled, God grants humanity freedom of choice and discernment, patience with difference, cooperation of all and perseverance in our prayers, which are closely linked to each other.

Action of the day : Deepen your faith et perseverance, just like the mother of this little girl.

«A woman, whose small daughter had an evil spirit, heard of him and came and fell at his feet»

Fr. Enric CASES i Martín

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we see the faith of a woman that did not belong to God's chosen people, but trusted Jesus could cure her daughter. That mother «was a pagan, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter» (Mk 7:26). Pain and love bring her to insistently beg, ignoring scorn, delays or indignities. And she gets what she is asking for, as she «went home, and she found her child lying in bed and the demon gone» (Mk 7:30).

Saint Augustine used to say that our prayers are not heard because we ask «aut mali, aut male, aut mala». “Mali”, because we are evil, for that our personal dispositions are not good, or they are bad, and we should be asking for, in the first place, to become good; “male” because we pray badly, without faith, not persevering, not humbly; “mala” because we ask for bad things, that is, things which are not good for us, things which can harm us. In the last analysis, prayer is ineffective when it is not true prayer. Therefore, «Pray. In what human venture could you have greater guarantee of success?» (Josemaria Escrivà). The Syrophenician woman is a good mother; she was begging something good («she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter») and she begged rightly («and came and fell at his feet»).

Our Lord wants us to use insistently the petition prayer or prayer of faith. There are, indeed, other kinds of prayers —worship, salvation, prayer of thanks—, but Jesus insists very much on our often using the petition prayer.

Why? Many could be the reasons: because we need God's help to attain our greatest aim; because it expresses hope and love; because it is a clamor of faith. But there is also a motive that, perhaps, is sometimes ignored: God wants things to be a little as we like them. Thus, our petition —which is an act of freedom— along with God's omnipotent power, can contribute to make the world as God wishes and a little as we wish, too. The power of prayer is just wonderful!

Notre Dame de Lourde

http://joeterrycmf.com/2021/02/notre-dame-de-lourdes.html

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 7,24-30):

Abbé Enric CASES i Martín

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 2,1-11):

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus was also invited to the wedding with his disciples. When all the wine provided for the celebration had been served and they had run out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, «They have no wine». Jesus replied, «Woman, what concern is that to you and me? My hour has not yet come». However His mother said to the servants, «Do whatever he tells you».

Nearby were six stone water jars meant for the ritual washing as practiced by the Jews; each jar could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, «Fill the jars with water». And they filled them to the brim. Then Jesus said, «Now draw some out and take it to the steward». So they did. The steward tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing from where it had come; for only the servants who had drawn the water knew. So, he called the bridegroom to tell him, «Everyone serves the best wine first and when people have drunk enough, he serves that which is ordinary. Instead you have kept the best wine until the end».

This miraculous sign was the first, and Jesus performed it at Cana in Galilee. In this way He let his Glory appear and his disciples believed in Him.

The Application

The presence of Mary, the Mother of God at Cana is an assurance to all the baptised, especially to all those whom they invite her to their feasts. We must invoke her name, without any moderation, just as we invoke our biological mother. Like all maternity in our families, Mary's maternity in our spiritual life,  helps us to approach the fatherhood of Jesus' Father.

Jesus on the cross gave us his mother as our mother. Like her Son, she is faithful to her mission, to become the mother of all. Her apparitions not only help us to understand the depth of God's love, but also by our faithfulness to enjoy it.  The God who loved us in Jesus, dead and risen, still accompanies us through the Marian apparitions.

Through these apparitions, Mary not only reveals to us the divine will, but also urges us unceasingly to obedience, which will lead us to Jesus, "Do whatever he tells you. "She would like us to become, like her divine Son, faithful to the commandment of love. "Love one another as I have loved you. »

Mary, on this feast day, reveals to us that she is the "Immaculate Conception" and through our sincere commitment she invites us to be pure through the primacy of God's grace.

Action of the day : Listen to Mary’s message to be a true son/daughter of God.

«Do whatever he tells you»

Today is the feast of our Lady of Lourdes. In the Gospel Jesus is the central character, but He provides his mother with a humble role as He daily does in Lourdes, in everything that happens there. Invited to a wedding party with his disciples, Jesus, there, makes his first "sign". Mary, tactfully, realizes the need of the new spouses, and prudently lets Jesus know, by pleading for them: "They have no more wine" (Jn 2:3). While Jesus’ answer seems rather evasive, not to say negative, Mary, all the same, warns the servants "Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:,5). She did not know what Jesus would do, but she was probably thinking: whatever He does, He will do his best! And she was right

The outcome is already well known: the messianic abundance of the "best wine" that makes the master of the banquet to be surprised and the disciples to reaffirm their faith in Jesus.

I would like to highlight the usefulness of the simple presence of Mary in that wedding feast: with feminine thoughtfulness, she realizes what is missing, and prudently she shares it with her son. This is the beautiful undertaking of Mary in our lives and in the Church. Let us recall here Pope Francis’ words on the role of Mary, and of women in general, in the Church: "The woman is essential for the church. ”Mary, a woman, is more important than the bishops. The feminine genius is needed wherever we make important decisions".

In the Church, in our families, in our personal lives, there are many shortcomings that Mary discovers and bestows upon Jesus; and her mediation is always effective! The woman is meant to provide a similar function

But it is necessary to invite Jesus and Mary to participate in our lives. And, most than all, it is also necessary to do whatever Jesus tells us to.

Evangile du jour

http://joeterrycmf.com/2021/02/le-11-fevrier.html

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 2,1-11):

Gospel text

(Mk 7,14-23):

Jesus then called the people to him again and said to them, «Listen to me, all of you, and try to understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can make that person unclean. It is what comes out from within that makes unclean. Let everyone who has ears listen».

When Jesus got home and was away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about this saying and he replied, «So even you are dull? Do you not see that whatever comes from outside cannot make a person unclean? Since it enters, not the heart but the stomach and is finally passed out». Thus Jesus declared that all foods are clean. And he went on, «What comes out of a person is what defiles, for evil designs come out of the heart: theft, murder, adultery, jealousy, greed, maliciousness, deceit, indecency, slander, pride and folly. All these evil things come from within and make a person unclean».

Application

I would like to make sure, two important points for me. Firstly, God is good and in His goodness He always does good by His nature and even more so for me, His beloved. Second, since I carry the image of God within me, I believe that I am also like Him full of goodness and generosity, certainly with my limits.

As I read today's Gospel, I tell myself, it is true that the outside world must not give me the reason for my discernment and no longer for my action. They can create certainly an ambiance or environment.  Since God dwells in me, I must find a concrete reason within me, just before God that will justify my discernment and my actions. God created the world and He found it good. I still find it good. Yet I must recognise that not everything that is good in this world is necessarily good for me. It’s here I am called to discern and decide.

This is why I must realise that if I do evil, a bad act, its origin is not outside, even if it is influenced by external elements, it comes directly from my interiority, from my own discernment and action. It is a fruit of my free act and engagement. Thus, by my own discernment and action, I make myself unclean, very often against the divine will. Therefore, let us be careful that our will is not influenced by external elements, but that it is coherent with the divine will, which is found in our own interiority, in the image of God.

Action of the day : Give attention tothe causality of your discernment and decision.

«Nothing that enters one from out¬side can make that person unclean»

Fr. Norbert ESTARRIOL i Seseras

(Lleida, Spain)

Today, Jesus teaches us that God made everything good. But our intentions —which are not always right— may contaminate what we do. This is why Jesus Christ says: «Nothing that enters one from outside can make that person unclean. It is what comes out from within that makes unclean» (Mk 7:15). The experience of the offence against God is very real. And we Christians can easily discover the evil's deep mark in a sin's enslaved world. The mission Jesus charges us with, is to clean —with the help of His grace— all this contamination men's bad intentions have spread all over the world.

The Lord wants all our activities to be carried out well: He expects us to show in them intensity, method, science, know-how, eagerness for perfection, not looking for anything else but reinstating God's plan for Creation. For God made everything for man's benefit: «Purity of intention. —You will always have it if, in everything you do, you only look forward to pleasing God» (Saint Josemaria).

Only our will can spoil the Divine Plan. And we must watch that this is not so. Quite often we let in vanity, pride, despondency for lack of faith, impatience when our aims are not attained... This is why saint Gregory the Great warned us: «Be not seduced by any flattering prosperity, for only the foolish traveler stops along the way to admire the beautiful landscape while forgetting where he is heading for».

It will, therefore, be convenient to pay attention to how we offer our deeds to God, to always be aware of His presence and to frequently consider the Divine Filiation. Thus, all our days—through work and prayer— will be fortified and begin in our Lord, and whatever we start in his name will reach its desired ending.

For we can make great things if we realize that each one of our human actions is a co-redeemer when joined to deeds and actions of Christ.
