Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 5,1-20.

Comme Jésus sortait de la barque, aussitôt un homme possédé d’un esprit impur s’avança depuis les tombes à sa rencontre ;
il habitait dans les tombeaux et personne ne pouvait plus l’attacher, même avec une chaîne ;

Scripture: Mark 5:1-20

1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of Gerasenes. 2 And when he had come out of the boat, there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who lived among the tombs; and no one could bind him any more, even with a chain; 4 for he had often been bound with fetters and chains, but the chains he wrenched apart, and the fetters he broke in pieces; and no one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out, and bruising himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped him; 7 and crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me." 8 For he had said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" 9 And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Legion; for we are many." 10 And he begged him eagerly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; 12 and they begged him, "Send us to the swine, let us enter them." 13 So he gave them leave. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered the swine; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and were drowned in the sea.

14 The herdsmen fled, and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus, and saw the demoniac sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the man who had the legion; and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it told what had happened to the demoniac and to the swine. 17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their neighborhood. 18 And as he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 But he refused, and said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and all men marveled.

The message

In the contradictions of life, we are forced to make choices, choose from the given possibilities, though good for one, one time, need not be good for the other or for an another epoch. Given situation and time, we are called to live in the present time, and respond positively for the needs of the society.

Jesus lives in the present time and the demons know that they have no place before this Light. Thought well before the given time, they presented themselves in a prudent way, and requested Jesus to send them among the swine. Jesus’ look is not on the demons, rather this person who has being dominated by the evil and the liberation takes its priority.

Jesus is there to liberate us from all that hinder us to have a close relationship with the Lord. We are called to make choices, choose what is good before God and act accordingly. Strangely this healed man is not called to follow Jesus closely, rather send in mission to announce all that he has received from the Lord. All don’t have the same call, rather, called to announce all that we have received from the Lord and share this joy of giving and receiving freely from the Lord.

In front this immense generosity of the goodness of the Lord, we find small and humbled that we take a sacred distance from the Lord so that we may discover His holiness from a distance, at the same time feeling the warmth of the Holiness that we are called to participate.

Coming back to home can be interpreted today for us for our personal meditation, as a pilgrimage into our own interiority and live the Joy of the call and announce it with conviction and courage.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 4,21-30.

En vérité, je vous le dis : Au temps du prophète Élie, lorsque pendant trois ans et demi le ciel retint la pluie, et qu’une grande famine se produisit surtoute la terre, il y avait beaucoup de veuves en Israël ;

Amen.

Gospel Reading: Luke 4:21-30

21 And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. 22 And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, "Is this not Joseph's son?" 23 And he said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, `Physician, heal yourself; what we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here also in your own country.'" 24 And he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." 28 When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong. 30 But passing through the midst of them he went away.

Homily

They have seen what He has done and heard Him interpreting the Scripture, yet they were not able to glimpse the mystery of His person and reduced Him simply are son of a carpenter, fully ignoring this exceptional dreamer who has saved this Holy Child, and brought Him in faith and love. Faith is a gift God offers us, it helps us live our lives fully in the Lord amidst of troubled time, painful moments, failed events, etc., helping to go beyond visible realities and discover the invisible truth hidden in these visible events of life. To have faith, we need not necessarily look for the extraordinary visions, vivid words or exceptional events as means that the people of Nazareth reclaim from Jesus, but a simple heart which loves and a humble mind which searches means to forgive and a compassionate look in the events of life is necessary.

Saint Paul reminds us of the essence of the Christian life; charity, a charity that was born in the goodness and generosity of the Lord, a charity that exceeds any rule that man can imagine or impose in the society. It is filled with love that is patient and makes service, no jealousy, no pride, working for justice and seeks truth, full of hope, and lives in joy and in peace, though pushed to the wall with many kinds of difficulties. We are all called to live this charity which St. Paul speaks, which will in turn will assure us inner peace and joy that the Lord promises.

Let us return to the Gospel of the day and look at the movements of the events. The same people who gave thanks to the Lord that glorified God, and now after listening the discourse of Jesus, have become furious. Why this anger and why this violence? Why their words and acts are not coherent? Surely they unveil to us their interiority, wickedness and unbelief. They are not living and acting according to the heart and intelligence, but in a childish way, allowing themselves animated by mere emotions, feelings and sentiments. An act against love, is an unknown act in the Christian faith and is not supported, though it may produce some unexpected good fruits. Saint John tells us, we must love not only by words and speech, but in truth and in spirit.

Jesus shows us two examples: a widow of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian. The confidence of a Gentile woman to the Prophet Elijah do provoke our own little and fragile faith. She was able to give everything, believing an unknown God from an unknown prophet. Naaman the Syrian did not hesitate to appeal to his enemy. He obeyed not only the word of the prophet, but also listened to his slave. My friends Jesus invites us to trust God and listen to everything we say. He is good and generous. We will lose nothing by listening.

We all are called by baptism, consecrated by the Holy Spirit and sent to the world, as the prophet Jeremiah. God knows our fragility and He will fortify us. So let us move forward with confidence and proclaim the Good News with courage. Let our life be animated by the love and by a compassionate Spirit. Let this year of mercy, be a year of grace and happiness. And gives us an opportunity to reconcile us with God and with our brothers and sisters. Let us take an effort to forgive with a generous and joyful heart.

We are all missionaries, called, consecrated and sent not for the Lord, but to do the work of the Lord, not away from Him, but with Him and in Him. Let us be messengers of the Lord, this merciful and loving God. It is an exciting adventure, full of risks; but we are not alone: the Spirit of the Lord is upon us. It is with Him that the Gospel will bear fruit. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 4,35-41.

Scripture: Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care if we perish?" 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?" 41 And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?"

The message

Many of us do ask this question, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” or Are you really there with me, in this troubled time? The answer is always, ‘YES’ and we are blind before this presence of God. The storms of life, though not willed by God, do help us to understand the depth of our faith and the necessity of nurturing it.

David though faithful to God, failed before his human desire, to the extreme of killing an innocent and faithful solder. In these troubled time, awaken by the prophet, he becomes more conscious of his wickedness and the need to grow deep in his love for the Lord and the need for pardon. This temptation did make strong in faith.

We are always troubled by anger, jealousy, temptation, betrayal, individualism, violence, etc. Many at times we are afraid, afraid for nothing. Though we have faith, we are afraid to apply it, particularly when we are in troubled waters. It’s strange that the disciples were afraid when the Lord was there with them. Isn’t strange still today that we are afraid while the Lord is still with us? Many of us fall with little trouble. Let’s not loose heart, have courage, the Lord will rise and rebuke our troubled time, to save us and to give us new life. Let’s strengthen our faith and confidence in the Lord.

Commentary of the day

Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), Carmelite, Doctor of the Church
Letter 284, to the Carmelite nuns of Seville

In the middle of the storm

Take courage, my daughters! Take courage! Remember that God does not send anybody more sufferings than what he is able to support and that His Majesty is with those who suffer. You must not fear, but have faith in his mercy that the truth will come to light and will reveal the hidden works of the devil who has sowed turmoil amongst you...Prayer, prayer, my sisters! It is now that humility and obedience should shine in each one of you...

Oh, what a good moment to reap the rewards of the resolutions you took to serve the Lord! Remember that he often likes to verify if the works correspond to the resolutions and words. In this big trial, honor your sisters, the daughters of the Virgin. If you apply yourselves to this, the good Jesus will help you. Although he is asleep on the sea at the time the great storm blows up, he stops the winds. But he wants us to pray him, for he loves us so much that he is always looking for new ways to make our souls progress. May his name be blessed for ever and ever. Amen, Amen.

In all our monasteries, we commend your souls insistently to God. And I have faith in his goodness that he will soon sort things out. So try to be cheerful and tell yourselves that in the end all one can suffer for such a good God is nothing compared to what he has suffered for us, for you still haven't reached the point of shedding your blood for him (He 12,4)...Let Him do, and you will see that soon the sea will swallow up those who wage war against us, as it happened with the Pharaoh.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 4,26-34.

Scripture: Mark 4:26-34

26 And he said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground, 27 and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come." 30 And he said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

The message

Jesus is strangely looking for the best parable to explain to us about the Kingdom of God. We interpret these parables with our own view points and try to understand the mystery revealed in Jesus. Jesus who has said the Kingdom of God is amidst us, it is by His very presence that this Kingdom of God is being established on this earth.

There are two important messages that I find very useful for me today. The first is, the mystery of this Kingdom. We will never be able to decode this mystery in its fullness, however, its fruits will be visible to our eyes. We are called to appreciate through the fruits, the enormous work of God behind this establishment of the Kingdom of God. Whenever little sign of faith, hope and charity are visible we are invited to identify them to this world and through these fruits, let the world discover the God who is in action.

The second point is, the smallness and greatness of the fruit. Though it may appear as if nothing, it is capable of producing great fruits. Thus let us not low estimate little works of people and try to discover the mystery behind very words and deeds of others. In this way of looking at people at large and the events we will create a respect for the little ones in our own being, by which we will be able to understand the marvellous work of the Lord.

Do we wish to be part of this Kingdom of God, filled with love and compassion?

Scripture: Mark 4:21-25

21 And he said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 For there is nothing hid, except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. 23 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear." 24 And he said to them, "Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away."

Commentary of the day

Saint Ignatius of Antioch (?-c.110), Bishop and martyr
Letter to the Ephesians, §13-15 (trans. Maxwell Staniforth)

"Nothing is secret except to come to light"

Do your best to meet more often to give thanks and glory to God. When you meet frequently, the powers of Satan are confounded, and in the face of your corporate faith his maleficence crumbles. Nothing can better a state of peaceful accord, from which every trace of spiritual or earthly hostility has been banished.

Given a thorough-going faith and love for Jesus Christ, there is nothing in all this that will not be obvious to you; for life begins and ends with those two qualities. Faith is the beginning, and love is the end; and the union of the two together is God. All that makes for a soul's perfection follows in their train, for nobody who professes faith will commit sin, and nobody who possesses love can feel hatred. As “the tree is known by its fruits” (Mt 12,33), so they who claim to belong to Christ are known by their actions; for this work of ours does not consist in just making professions, but in a faith that is both practical and lasting.

Indeed, it is better to keep quiet and be, than to make fluent professions and not be. No doubt it is a fine thing to instruct others, but only if the speaker practises what he preaches. We have only one teacher (Mt 23,8): He who “spoke the word, and it was done” (Ps 33[32],9); and what He achieved even by His silences was well worthy of the Father. A man who has truly mastered the utterances of Jesus will also be able to apprehend His silence, and thus reach full spiritual maturity, so that his own words have the force of actions and his silences the significance of speech. Nothing is hidden from the Lord; even our most secret thoughts are ever present to Him. Whatever we do, then, let it be done as though He Himself were dwelling within us, we being as it were His temples and He within us as their God. For in fact that is literally the case; and in proportion as we rightly love Him, so it will become clear to our eyes.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 4,1-20.

Du grain est tombé aussi sur du sol pierreux, où il n’avait pas beaucoup de terre ; il a levé aussitôt, parce que la terre était peu profonde ;
Et de même, il y a ceux qui ont reçu la semence dans les endroits pierreux : ceux-là, quand ils entendent la Parole, ils la reçoivent aussitôt avec joie ;

Scripture: Mark 4:1-20

1 Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And he taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 "Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had not much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil; 6 and when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty fold and sixty fold and a hundredfold." 9 And he said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

10 And when he was alone, those who were about him with the twelve asked him concerning the parables. 11 And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables; 12 so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven."

13 And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown; when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word which is sown in them. 16 And these in like manner are the ones sown upon rocky ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; 17 and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns; they are those who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown upon the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty fold and sixty fold and a hundredfold."

The message

We all know about the parable of sower and the seed, the implications of this story and how Jesus has explained to us, relating this directly to the Word of God and its fruits. Instead of entering largely into this well meditated parable, I would meditate on the soil, which is directly connected to you and me, for the practical application.

God though took the initiative to prepare the land, (which He continues to do it,) do give us the sufficient liberty and the freedom to discern, decide and engage positively in the process of preparation, without imposing the divine plan on us. Like Mary the mother of Jesus, the apostles of the Lord and Paul, who were prepared well, even from the childhood, without even them being aware of these preparation, we too are prepared by the Lord for a particular mission, which we may or may not know, at the present given time or situation.

Only a heart which cooperates perfectly in the process of configuration by the Lord, is considered as the good soil, which is capable of producing fruits, and the rest fall apart. We have to look thus very deeply in all our human and divine experiences past and present, both pleasant and painful, and discover the immense preparation done by the Lord through these years of human and divine encounters, where we were sometime forced to undergo, even unjustly, by unjust means and people. Are we ready for this configuration, wilfully accepting to be open for the change and absolute obedience to the will of the Lord? Without a positive response, we can’t produce the fruits that the Lord desires in and through us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 10,1-9.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 10:1-9.

The Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.
He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.
Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.
Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.'
If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'"

Commentary of the day

Blessed Paul VI, Pope from 1963-1978
Evangelii nuntiandi, 70

Being a lamp on the lamp stand

Lay people, whose particular vocation places them in the midst of the world and in charge of the most varied temporal tasks, must for this very reason exercise a very special form of evangelization.

Their primary and immediate task is not to establish and develop the ecclesial community — this is the specific role of the pastors — but to put to use every Christian and evangelical possibility latent but already present and active in the affairs of the world. Their own field of evangelizing activity is the vast and complicated world of politics, society and economics, but also the world of culture, of the sciences and the arts, of international life, of the mass media. It also includes other realities which are open to evangelization, such as human love, the family, the education of children and adolescents, professional work, suffering. The more Gospel-inspired lay people there are engaged in these realities, clearly involved in them, competent to promote them and conscious that they must exercise to the full their Christian powers which are often buried and suffocated, the more these realities will be at the service of the kingdom of God and therefore of salvation in Jesus Christ, without in any way losing or sacrificing their human content but rather pointing to a transcendent dimension which is often disregarded.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 16,15-18.

Voici les signes qui accompagneront ceux qui deviendront croyants : en mon nom, ils expulseront les démons ; ils parleront en langues nouvelles ;

Scripture: Mark 16:15-18 (alternate reading: Mark 3:22-30)

15 And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

The message

The conversion of Saint Paul begins with the pardon and mercy from the Lord. Without making any judgement on the acts of Paul, we find a God with a supplication, humbly asking for an explanation, for which Saul was incapable of neither understanding the call nor what is wrong in his faithfulness to the Law and to the tradition. Paradoxically, it is in this school of darkness that he has seen the light of Christ, it is the Light which has blinded him, and in this blindness that Saul has become Paul.

Many such human encounters are happening in our lives and we don’t allow ourselves to be touched by these lights, and we don’t wish to become blind. Though logic in our human thinking, before God, we should allow ourselves to be blinded by His light. To announce the Good News, we should receive this in our hearts and put our intelligence in work to actualize what the heart has learned in life.

Though many of us long to forget our past life, though it may carry a heavy weight behind us, Paul’s submission does encourage us not to forget the past, because it is in these past painful events that divine encounter has happened and it is because of these bitter past that we have seen the light and are called to witness this light and announce it with courage.

Shall we all the conversion of Paul to touch us and convert us? Lord repeat this words every day to my ears, particularly in the evening before I go to bed, that I may experience your pardon and your love.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 3,20-21.

Scripture: Mark 3:19b, 20-21

Then he went home; 20 and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for people were saying, "He is beside himself."

Commentary of the day

Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), Dominican theologian, Doctor of the Church
Opuscule for the Feast of Corpus Christi (trans. Breviary)

Jesus gives himself wholly : he gives his own self to eat

The only-begotten Son of God, wishing to enable us to share in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that by becoming man he might make men gods. Moreover, he turned the whole of our nature, which he assumed, to our salvation. For he offered his body to God the Father on the altar of the cross as a sacrifice for our reconciliation; and he shed his blood for our ransom and our cleansing, so that we might be redeemed from wretched captivity and cleansed from all sins.

Now in order that we might always keep the memory of his great act of love, he left his body as food and his blood as drink, to be received by the faithful under the appearances of bread and wine... What could be more precious than this banquet? It is not the meat of calves or kids that is offered, as happened under the Old Law; at this meal Christ, the true God, is set before us for us to eat. What could be more wonderful than this sacrament?... No one is capable of expressing the delight of this sacrament, through which the sweetness of the Spirit is tasted at its source, and the memory is celebrated of that surpassing love which Christ showed in his Passion.

And so, in order to imprint the immensity of this love more deeply in the hearts of the faithful, at the Last Supper, when the Lord had celebrated the Pasch with his disciples and was about to pass from this world to his Father, he instituted this sacrament as a perpetual memorial of his Passion. It fulfilled the types of the Old Law; it was the greatest of the miracles he worked; and he left it as a unique consolation to those who were desolate at his departure.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 3,13-19.

Then he went home.

Commentary of the day

The letter to Diognetus (c.200)
XI

“To send them to preach”

I am not saying anything strange, I am not seeking what is paradoxical. Rather, docile to the teaching of the apostles, I in turn want to teach the nations. I want to pass on the tradition exactly to those who also want to become disciples of the Truth. Who… would not hasten to learn entirely all that the Word of God clearly taught his disciples? For in manifesting itself, that Word, which was not understood by those who did not believe in him, showed the truth to his disciples; speaking openly, he told his disciples everything. He recognized them to be his faithful ones, and they received from him knowledge of the mysteries of the Father.

That is why the Word was sent into the world. And so that he might be shown to the whole world, … he was proclaimed by the apostles, so that the nations might believe in him. He who was from the beginning (1 Jn 1:1), manifested himself in newness, and his disciples recognized in him what was old. In the heart of his saints, he is always born anew young … Through him, the Church is filled with richness. Grace opens up, is multiplied in the saints. It gives the understanding of faith, uncovers the mysteries of the Father; it gives understanding of the times… It is offered to those who seek it and who respect the rule of faith and faithfully keep the tradition of the Fathers.

Here the fear of the Law is sung; here the grace of the prophets is acknowledged, the faith of the Gospels is strengthened, the tradition of the apostles is kept; the grace of the Church leaps for joy. Do not sadden this grace. Then you will know the secrets, which the Word of God reveals through whom he wishes, when it pleases him. Draw near, listen, and you will know all that God entrusts to those who truly love him.
