Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 1,39-45.

Scripture: Luke 1:26-38 (alternate reading: Luke 1:39-39-44)

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" 35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible."38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

The message

Saint Bernard (1091-1153), Cistercian monk and doctor of the Church
Sermon for the Octave of the Assumption, On the twelve prerogatives of Mary

“Blessed is she who has believed”

Mary is blessed, as her cousin Elizabeth has said to her, not simply because God has looked on her, but because she believed. Her faith is the most beautiful of the fruits of divine goodness. But it required the inexpressible art of the Holy Spirit to take place in her if such greatness of soul was to be united to such humility in the intimacy of her virginal heart. Mary’s humility and greatness of soul, like her virginity and fruitfulness, are like two stars shining on each other. For, in Mary, the depth of her humility does not in the least retract from the generosity of her soul, and vice versa. Even though Mary had so lowly an estimate of herself, she was no less generous in her faith in the promise made her by the angel because of it. She, who looked upon herself entirely as a poor and insignificant servant, in no way doubted herself to be called to this incomprehensible mystery, this tremendous union, this unfathomable secret. And she believed instantly that she was truly about to become the mother of God-made-man.

It is God’s grace that produces this marvel in the hearts of the elect; humility does not make them fearful and timorous any more than their generosity of soul makes them proud. To the contrary, where the saints are concerned, these two virtues reinforce one another. Greatness of soul not only does not open the door to any pride, but it is this above all that allows it to penetrate the mystery of humility even further. Indeed, those who are the most generous in their service of God are also the most penetrated by the fear of the Lord and the most grateful for the gifts they have received. Similarly, when it is a question of humility, no trace of cowardice insinuates into the soul. The less someone is accustomed to presume on his own strength, even in the smallest things, the more he entrusts himself to the power of God, even in the greatest.

One more commentary

Saint John Chrysostom (c.345-407), priest at Antioch then Bishop of Constantinople, Doctor of the Church
A Homily attributed to,

"The infant in my womb leaped for joy"

O what a novel and wonderful mystery! John has not yet been born but already he gives voice with his bounds; he has not yet appeared but already he manifests signs of his presence; he cannot yet cry and already he is heard through what he does; as yet he has not begun his life and already he is preaching about God; he does not yet see the light and is already pointing to the sun; he has not yet been brought forth and already he hastens to act as forerunner. The Lord is there! John cannot restrain himself; he is not going to be restricted by the limitations set by nature but strives to break out of the prison of his mother's womb and make known beforehand the Savior's coming. “He who breaks our bonds has come,” he says. “and am I to remain shackled? Am I still bound to remain here? The Word comes to re-establish all things and am I still to remain captive? I will come out and run ahead of him and announce to all: Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn 1,29).

But tell us, John, held fast as you are in the darkness of your mother's womb, how is it that you see and hear? How can you behold divine things? How can you be leaping and rejoicing? “The mystery that is taking place is great indeed,” he says. “It is something beyond human understanding. It is with good reason that I am doing something new in the natural order on behalf of him who is to do something new in the supernatural order. I see even before my birth because I see the Sun of Justice gestating (Mal 3,20). I perceive by ear because, in coming into the world, I myself am the voice that goes before the great Word. I cry out because I behold the only Son of the Father clothed in his flesh. I rejoice because I see the world's Creator receive human form. I leap for joy when I think that the Redeemer of the world has taken a human body. I am the forerunner of his coming and precede your testimony with my own.

Scripture: Luke 1:39-45 (alternate reading: Luke 1:26-38)

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."

Homily

We are in joy. Everything which happens in these days is organized and guided by the Holy Spirit. In today’s story, God is the centre and all that is going to happen in the Visitation is closely linked with the Annunciation, where all those called to participate, play their roles perfectly, in faith and in joy. Today we must ask ourselves, what our role is and how we play our roles entrusted by God. In all that we say and do, does God is the centre?

Every Sunday I propose a theme for contemplation. For this week, I would suggest you the theme 'welcoming the Lord in joy.' It is important that we learn to welcome Him, in the fullness of joy. Like in the Old Testament, people honoured the Lord by offering blood and many kinds of such offerings, which Jesus has totally changed by offering Himself once and for all, through His death and resurrection, the way we welcome the Lord can never be modelled by the old fashions, rather rooted in Christ, the living Christ in our brothers and sisters. What is our offering would be today and how are we going to welcome Him?

All readings of the day proclaimed that God is at work and we must not panic or get discouraged by the events of our present time. While we feel small as Bethlehem, or as Elizabeth, perhaps we feel be abandoned or ignored, yet it is important that we assure ourselves that God will raise us, He Himself will come back to save us. He will come directly as He did to Mary or through his angels, or through our friends, even by known and unknown foreigners and strangers, etc.

In this last week of preparation, it is important that we focus ourselves to recognize the envoys of the Father, the people that the Lord sends to us. To such people, we should accord the same respect and welcome that we reserve for the Lord. After so many years of waiting, the people of Israel have rejected not only John the Baptist who came to prepare, but the Lord Himself was crucified. God does not want that the old history repeats itself today.

To prepare us worthily to welcome the Lord, we must look at the people in the gospel who have welcomed others. Elizabeth received Mary, she received her not as her cousin, but as the Mother of Jesus. Her child has recognized the Saviour even before he actually sees the Lord. What respect they gave each other! In their proximity of human and family relationship, there was an unknown distance between them because they recognized the Holy Spirit who acts in their personal life, which will have a historical implication. Many of us are not aware of this historical implication and the work of the Lord in these human encounters.

My dear friends, from today let us accord the same respect that Mary has accorded to Elizabeth and the welcome that Elizabeth has granted to Mary. They respected the sacred distance in their relationship, fully aware that it is God who acts in our weakness. Let us rejoice as John the Baptist in every human encounter and try to transform it as a divine encounter. When we welcome others, let us feel the same joy in us, that of John and that of Elizabeth. As Elizabeth who recognizes in this human encounter the marvellous work of God, let us identify God's work in our human relationship. "Blessed is she who believed in the fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. »

We have very few days left for the great feast. Let us take the time to discover the immense preparation of God to save us in Jesus, and the joyful mystery in the incarnation, God in our humanity. Like Mary in docility of faith, sure of the Word of God, who brought her child to John by her displacement of leaving Galilee, let us carry Christ's mercy in faith to the world by our displacement from the place of security towards this world that God created and found good, for it may have the joy, assured by the Word of the Lord.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 1,5-25.

car il sera grand devant le Seigneur. Il ne boira pas de vin ni de boisson forte, et il sera rempli d’Esprit Saint dès le ventre de sa mère ;
il fera revenir de nombreux fils d’Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu ;

Scripture: Luke 1:5-25

5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.

8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; 15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared."

18 And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb.

23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, 25 "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men."

The message

The dialogue between the angel of the Lord and Zechariah does help us to awaken our own incredulity. Though Zechariah was praying with zeal for a child, when the message is announced, however, he failed to believe. The human intelligence and our dependence in the worldly wisdom have blocked the way to faith and freedom. Mary, the mother of Jesus does help us to overcome this incredulity in our spiritual journey, by our humility before the divine intervention. Only if we are rooted in faith and hope, can we be able to identify these divine interventions, which happens before our eyes, but remain hidden to human intelligence.

Our joyful waiting in faith will assure us a hope which goes beyond human intelligence and discover the marvellous work that the Lord is doing in our life. Our faith in the goodness of God, in the God of mercy and love, will certainly help us to grow deep in faith and charity.

To deepen our faith, it is important that we appreciate the invisible presence of God in our life, learn to relate with Him permanently and grow deeper possible in this divine relationship. Mary remained always connected, and Zechariah has failed to keep this Faith relationship keep going, even in the Holy of Holies. Faith grows in believing in the unbelievable. Are we the believers?

Comme il avait formé ce projet, voici que l’ange du Seigneur lui apparut en songe et lui dit : « Joseph, fils de David, ne crains pas de prendre chez toi Marie, ton épouse, puisque l’enfant qui est engendré en elle vient de l’Esprit Saint ;

Scripture: Matthew 1:18-25

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, 25 but her knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.

The message

Decree « Urbi et orbi » of 8 December 1870

Saint Joseph, husband of Mary, Jesus’ fatherly provider, patron of the Church

Just as God appointed the patriarch Joseph, son of Jacob, as governor of Egypt so as to assure the grain required for life to the people (Gn 41,40f.), so, when the times were fulfilled when the Eternal One would send his only Son to earth to redeem the world, he chose another Joseph of whom the first was a prefiguration. He appointed him as Lord and prince over his house and goods, he entrusted his richest treasures to his care. Thus Joseph wed the Immaculate Virgin Mary from whom, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, who wished to pass for the son of Joseph and deigned to be subject to him, was born. He whom so many prophets and kings longed to see (Lk 10,24), Joseph not only saw but he conversed with him, embraced in his arms with fatherly tenderness and covered with kisses. With immense care and incomparable solicitude he fed the one whom the faithful would eat as the bread of eternal life.

Because of this sublime dignity to which God raised his most faithful servant, the Church has always exalted and honoured Saint Joseph with a special celebration, even though it is of lower rank than the one she renders the Mother of God. In times of special need she has always begged his help… This is why we will solemnly declare Saint Joseph to be the Patron of the Catholic Church.

The Message

Saint Irenaeus of Lyons (c.130-c.208), Bishop, theologian and martyr
Adversus Haereses, IV, 20, 4-5

“Here is the book of the genesis of Jesus Christ”

There is one God, who by his word and wisdom created all things and set them in order...Because of his greatness, he is unknown by all the beings created by him: no one in fact has seen his origin. Nevertheless, because of his love, since the creation of the world he is known by the one by which he has created all things (Rom 1,20); this one is His Word, our Lord Jesus Christ, who in this last age became man among men to unite end and beginning, that is, man and God.

That is why the prophets, receiving the gift of prophecy from this same Word, foretold his coming in the flesh, which brought about the union and communion between God and man ordained by the Father. From the beginning the word of God prophesied that God would be seen by men and would live among them on earth; he would speak with his own creation (Ba 3,38) and be present to it, bringing it salvation and being visible to it...

The prophets, then, foretold that God would be seen by men. As the Lord himself says: “Blessed are the clear of heart, for they shall see God” (Mt 5,8). Of course, in his greatness and inexpressible glory, “no one can see God and live” (Ex 33,20), for the Father is beyond our comprehension. But in his love and generosity and omnipotence he allows even this to those who love him, that is, even to see God, as the prophets foretold. For “what is impossible to men is possible to God” (Lk 18,27).

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 7,18b-23.

Scripture: Luke 7:18-23

18 The disciples of John told him of all these things.19 And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?" 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, `Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?'" 21 In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who takes no offense at me."

The message

John has seen the truth without seeing what actually is happening in the city. However his human desire to verify this truth does pushes him through his disciples to approach Jesus for a confirmation of the Messiah. Sadly people who lived in the city, particularly the elites who claimed to have all the information and scripture interpretations correct, failed to go beyond from visible realities to invisible truth. Are we living in the light or in the darkness?

A pure heart and an innocent hand, however will identify the presence of God, though explicit to their eyes, remain hidden to all the self-proclaimed wise men. For us in this contemporary world, neither the acts of Jesus, nor His miracles which get the higher importance, rather the very BEING of Jesus: GOD-MAN in its fullness, His incarnation, death and resurrection. It is in this very truth of God with us, the proximity that the incarnated has brought to us that we admire without measure and are wonderstruck even in our simple imagination.

Our joyful waiting thus brings all together: our faith, our hope and the reason for our charity. It is in this incarnated that we discover the proximity of God and God himself; the faith. The divine mercy gives us the hope to have hope. Certainly the acts and gestures that get generated in us, should be the fruit of this knowledge of this simple truth: God loves and forgives.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 21,28-32.

In English

Scripture: Matthew 21:28-32

28 "What do you think? A man had two sons; and he went to the first and said, `Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' 29 And he answered, `I will not'; but afterward he repented and went. 30 And he went to the second and said the same; and he answered, `I go, sir,' but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him."

The message

Today’s gospel reminds us the importance of discernment and the way we engage to accomplish the will of the Father. Though there are many exigencies, God, however gives us the maximum freedom and liberty that He can accord to us. While complaining generously that God doesn’t listen to our prayers, shouldn’t we accord the same generosity in accomplishing the will of the Father? Should we know the will of the Father, or at least took the initiative to know His will in our personal life? Without this basic knowledge how can it be possible for us to build the health relationship with Him?

Jesus is asking each and every one us, are we really just before God in our discernment and priorities? All that God asks us to do is not for His good, rather for our own good. How can we be happy without realizing this basic goodness of God? Shouldn’t we repent and believe in this goodness of God and start to do all that He is asking us to do? The joyful waiting begins with this simple conviction of God’s goodness.

Evangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 21,23-27.

Scripture: Matthew 21:23-27

23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" 24 Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you a question; and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men?" And they argued with one another, "If we say, `From heaven,' he will say to us, `Why then did you not believe him?' 26 But if we say, `From men,' we are afraid of the multitude; for all hold that John was a prophet." 27 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The message

Many of us think that we are intelligent and fail drastically before the truth. The elite of the society also depended on their intelligence and wanted to put Jesus in trouble by asking a tricky question. Jesus who believes in the truth had wisely and patiently responded to them by a very simple question that these so called wise people have drastically fell before the truth of their own wickedness that they so desired to put Jesus in.

While meditating on the joyful waiting, I wish to my readers to look into our inner heart and discover how much God is at work in us. Our joy has its foundation on this very truth that the Lord is among us and in us. This God continues to work in us, through our failures and success. Only those who have found this very presence of God and experienced this divine accompaniment, particularly a God of mercy and compassion, can feel this joy of God’s presence in our life.

Joyful waiting intrinsically defines the importance of patience. We humbly acknowledge that we don’t know how God works in us and in which way He uses our being and for what purpose. It’s here we surrender our self to God, fully aware of His goodness in our life, waiting joyfully and patiently for His arrival and this very revelation of His eternal presence in this world.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 17,10-13.

Scripture: Matthew 17:9a,10-13 (alternate reading: Luke 1:26-38)

9a And as they were coming down the mountain 10 the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?" 11 He replied, "Elijah does come, and he is to restore all things; 12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of man will suffer at their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

The message

Like us today, then people of Israel also were preparing to welcome the savoir. Mary, Joseph, Zachariah and Elizabeth, Simeon, Anna of the Temple, were some that the Bible names for us. All that we know after is the history. Should we fall in the same category of people who refused the Lord or to be part of Mary and co? Certainly we all wish to be with Mary and the small group who welcomed Christ.

God does send the saviours in our life too. How can a loving God can leave us alone in our suffering? Most of us are waiting for the powerful and the victorious Christ who will come and save us. God might have sent a little child, may be it was a beggar, why not a stranger, an inspiration, everything is possible. Thus, it is important that we give attention to all those whom we meet these days, including the people who hate us.

Let us transform all human encounter as divine encounter. Thus we will be able not only to identity the saviour and will have the courage to accept, listen and put all that is communicated to us in practice. In our simplicity of life, we will be able to welcome the Christ in our heart and profit the happiness and Joy that this Christmas assures us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 11,16-19.

Dans ton amour tu prends pitié ;
Pour le sauver de son malheur,
Tu le guéris de son péché.

Quand fut venu le soir du temps,
La Vierge t'a donné le jour ;

Tous les genoux devront plier ;
Et sur la terre comme au ciel
À ton regard tout se soumet.

Louange, honneur, puissance et gloire
À Dieu le Père et à son Fils,
À l'Esprit, notre Défenseur,
Dans les éternités sans fin.

Scripture: Matthew 11:16-19

16 "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, 17 `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.' 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon'; 19 the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."

Latin Liturgy
Conditor alme siderum

To reform our lives in response to the repeated calls of the God who comes

Creator of the stars of night,
Your people's everlasting light,
O Christ, Redeemer of us all,
We pray you hear us when we call.

In sorrow that the ancient curse
Should doom to death a universe,
You came, O Savior, to set free
Your own in glorious liberty.

When this old world drew on toward night,
You came; but not in splendor bright,
Not as a monarch, but the child
Of Mary, blameless mother mild.

At your great Name, O Jesus, now
All knees must bend, all hearts must bow;
All things on earth with one accord,
Like those in heaven, shall call you Lord.

Come in your holy might, we pray,
Redeem us for eternal day;
Defend us while we dwell below
From all assaults of our dread foe.

To God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit, Three in One,
Praise, honor, might, and glory be
From age to age eternally.
