Amen.

Gospel Reading: Mark 11:1-10

[See Passion Narrative & Meditation for Mark 14:1--15:47]

1 And when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 2 and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat; untie it and bring it. 3 If any one says to you, `Why are you doing this?' say, `The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.'" 4 And they went away, and found a colt tied at the door out in the open street; and they untied it. 5 And those who stood there said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" 6 And they told them what Jesus had said; and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and threw their garments on it; and he sat upon it. 8 And many spread their garments on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed cried out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in the highest!"

Homily

We have arrived at the beginning of the great Easter and since forty days we were preparing to celebrate this week in a meaningful way, which may enkindle in us the same love and passion that God has for us. We call this week ‘Holy Week’, because in the center, there is Jesus Christ, that we are invited to follow throughout our Christian pilgrimage towards the Promised Land. It is looking toward His cross that we understand how much He loved us.

We must never forget that His passion was a passion of love. It is here we will understand many such passions that agitate our heart, particularly the passion of parents for their children, the passion friends for their loved ones, etc. If Jesus was condemned, it is because men loved the sacrifices of the law of mercy. It is also because of the lack of faith of those who consider themselves righteous. We need not only religious people, but holy people who see the presence of God and transfer this presence in the world through their life. Whoever does not choose love ends up in the evil.

It is not known how the pain and suffering have entered a world where God dwells. Why God allowed such suffering and pain coexist with joy and happiness. Why the Father has delivered his Son in the hands of the wicked? We have no answer than trying to understand to what extent God can go to save us. How can a loving Father remain in peace and joy, while his beloved son suffers outside of his dwelling place? The story of prodigal son does explain to us the silent suffering of the Father. Here we have a God who took our flesh, participate in the sufferings of humanity, becomes a victim of the wickedness of men, becoming obedient unto death, even death on a cross reserved for serious criminals of that era.

He was cheered by children, as the king of the Jews, as the messiah and savior of the world, as sent from God, son of David, etc. But Jesus has chosen the one title given by the Father: My beloved. And undertakes His mission filled with love, as beloved Son doing everything His father asked for. It was not easy for him. He has asked this question as we, why this Cross and why it's me. Yet He obeyed His Father saying, "Thy will be done." Our Mother, the mother of Jesus is a witness to this process where she herself had undergone.

We now hail as our king, but he is a king otherwise, without soldiers or power, without the palace or riches. Christians see him as our savior and liberator. For the Church it is a king of kindness and generosity. A king of love and forgiveness. King of humility who is accessible for all those who seek Him. There is a king who gives himself. He really is our king par excellence. A king who protects His people and His kingdom, a king who makes His people rich and powerful, by becoming poor and empty.

My friends, today it is hard to find a king like him. By baptism, He has made us capable of giving ourselves for our beloved ones. Today He is asking us to renew our baptismal promise, He asking us to be like Him, a deliverer, a savior, who makes everyone happy and joyful. Let us trust in this king and become a king like Him. Amen.

Alors, l’un d’entre eux, Caïphe, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là, leur dit : « Vous n’y comprenez rien ;
Ce qu’il disait là ne venait pas de lui-même ; mais, étant grand prêtre cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus allait mourir pour la nation ;

Gospel Reading: John 11:45-56

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him; 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council, and said, "What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on thus, every one will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place and our nation." 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all; 50 you do not understand that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish." 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they took counsel how to put him to death.

54 Jesus therefore no longer went about openly among the Jews, but went from there to the country near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim; and there he stayed with the disciples. 55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?"

The message

Everything is oriented towards the death of Jesus. It is so prepared, it seems, the history is just an enactment of the past.

What is important for us today is, are we aware that His death has saved us and united us once again with His Father? Do we feel that we are His children and the exigency demanded from this paternal filiation?

All of them search for Jesus, each with their own purposes. We too search for Christ and are we aware the intention of our search for Christ?

At the end there is a simple, but a radical question: will he come to Jerusalem? Let have the confidence: He will come to save us.

Gospel Reading: John 10:31-42

31 The Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of these do you stone me?" 33 The Jews answered him, "It is not for a good work that we stone you but for blasphemy; because you, being a man, make yourself God." 34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, `I said, you are gods'? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came (and Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, `You are blaspheming,' because I said, `I am the Son of God'? 37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." 39 Again they tried to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands. 40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John at first baptized, and there he remained. 41 And many came to him; and they said, "John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true." 42 And many believed in him there.

The message

If God has created us in His image, aren’t we the visible signs of this invisible God? Jesus is explaining to us that He is in God and God in Him. In this season of Lent, we are called to have such close relationship with God.

How to know this God? Jesus is telling us that through His work, we can easily identify the presence of God in Jesus. With the same breath He is telling us to look back into our own salvation history and discover, how much God was faithful and He is assuring us that this God will be always faithful.

Today can we join in this group of believers who believe and follow Jesus? Are we ready to leave behind everything to follow Jesus?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 8,51-59.

Les Juifs lui dirent alors : « Toi qui n’as pas encore cinquante ans, tu as vu Abraham ! »

Gospel Reading: John 8:51-59

51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death." 52 The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, `If any one keeps my word, he will never taste death.' 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you claim to be?" 54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God. 55 But you have not known him; I know him. If I said, I do not know him, I should be a liar like you; but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see my day; he saw it and was glad." 57 The Jews then said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." 59 So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

The message

We all have to die one day. How to understand this teaching of Jesus that all those who listen His Word and practice will never see death? Saint Augustin says that there are two kinds of death. The first is the physical death that we cannot reverse it, which is actually a passage from earthly life towards the eternal life. The second is a rupture from our relation with the Father, by which we get united with the evil, an eternal death.

When Jesus speaks about the liberation, life without dying, it is the second death, which is very dangerous than the biological death. His death liberates us from death caused by sin. All those who listen to His commandment of love and forgiveness, even in their death, will live in God. It is this life in God is promised to us, not a liberation from the biological death. For every Christian, this biological death is the birth of eternal life in God. Our celebrations of saints do explain to us the meaning of death.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 1, 26-38)

Scripture: Luke 1:26-38 (alternate reading: John 8:31-42)

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" 35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible."38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

The message

If we wish to decode the message of the Lord, we should learn to accept the message. Only by accepting and meditating the Word of God, we can understand and put it into practice.

If Mary could understand and identify the message, it is because, she was living in God. She encourages us to adore our Lord where ever we may be. God, who has seen this hidden adoration of true God in her heart, honored Mary with a marvelous gift of carrying and caring His Son.

Even though the way Zacharias and Mary have asked the question may be similar, there is a vast difference in the question because, Mary accepts the message and clarifies the details, but Zacharias right from the beginning refuses to accept the message. The second and important message is, Mary could surrender to the will of the Father, but Zacharias waits for a scientific explanation from the angel.

I wish to all my readers a very happy feast day.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 8,21-30.

Gospel Reading: John 8:21-30

21 Again he said to them, "I go away, and you will seek me and die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come." 22 Then said the Jews, "Will he kill himself, since he says, `Where I am going, you cannot come'?" 23 He said to them, "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he." 25 They said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Even what I have told you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you and much to judge; but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him." 27 They did not understand that he spoke to them of the Father. 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority but speak thus as the Father taught me. 29 And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him." 30 As he spoke thus, many believed in him.

The message

How much time we force Jesus to reveal His identity? Like the people of Israel, we too very often grumble against God, but He is always faithful to His promise. He knows our sins and He forgets it, because He loves us. It is in this same love for us He has taken the Cross, and though it was quite humiliating, He took it, so that we may not be humiliated.

As Christians, if we forget the importance of this truth, then we lose the sense of our Christian vocation. Like Him we are called to love others and be ready to be raised up on the cross, for the salvation of the world. Are we ready or still grumbling?

Le 23 Mars

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 8,1-11.

Gospel Reading: John 8:1-11

1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple; all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say about her?" 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her." 8 And once more he bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus looked up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again."

The message

This week we will meditate on the theme, “we wish to see Jesus.” Let us look at the way Jesus looks at the people and the woman. He is gentile with all. To the crow, the response is silence, but to the women, the message is , “ do not sin again”.

He is asking us to do the same today. First, be merciful like Him, the second is not to judge, even the evil doers are welcome to be with Jesus, with the condition that they may be open for the conversion. One of the virtues which may be very useful for us today is, patience and silence. They are very powerful instruments available to all but very few use them.

The third and important message in these readings is the confidence. Even if things don’t go in the right way, let us not be disappointed, the Lord will come to save us. Even if we fail, let us not stop to give a second opportunity to ourselves. With Jesus, there is always a place for hope and confidence.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 12,20-33.

Si quelqu’un me sert, mon Père l’honorera.
Maintenant a lieu le jugement de ce monde ; maintenant le prince de ce monde va être jeté dehors ;

Amen.

Gospel Reading: John 12:20-33

20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.

27 "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? `Father, save me from this hour'? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify thy name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." 29 The crowd standing by heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." 30 Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. 31 Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; 32 and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." 33 He said this to show by what death he was to die.

Homily

We are entering in to the fifth Sunday of Lent and today we are in Jerusalem with Jesus. We will ponder in this week on the theme, "We wish to see Jesus." When they come, we see Jesus upset and disturbed, like any one of us, before the death, and he is troubled of the would be behavior of the people of God. He hears already the people crying, crucify him, Crucify Him and their choice of Barabbas the robber instead of Jesus the Savior.

It is in this troubled moment, there is a request from some Greeks who are up to Jerusalem to worship God. "We wish to see Jesus," They are searching for this wonder worker that they have heard from others, a great personality who inspires the people.

Their search of Jesus can be reduced into our own search for God. We cannot worship God without knowing. Saint Augustin will say, to know Him we should love Him, to love Him we should know Him. There Greeks are fully surprised to see in Jesus, a man fully troubled and internally disturbed.

Jesus begins to teach them. "If the grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it bears much fruit" A paradox of life: die to live?, leave everything to have the life? Rightly Jesus has said paradoxically, that the stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Prince thrown out of the city, will draw all men towards Him: a moment of glory through cross and resurrection that the world rejects daily. The Greeks have come to meet this prince who is to be condemned to death.

"We wish to see Jesus," He alone can teach us to love like him and to forgive. To see and meet Jesus, we need to reach out to others. The Lord is very much visible in the face of the people who are hospitalized, in the old aged homes, in the isolated community……………., so strange, it is these people who suffer more than us, become our own consolation. How many of us have taken a voluntary charitable activity to help others, and have come back home, fully nourished by their love and generosity?

In His death, God has made a covenant with us, not as He has done with our fathers. It is a new alliance, where all our past sins are forgotten. Through this alliance, he gives us a new heart, a new spirit, which does not need to teach because of this new alliance, the rule of life will be of love and our hearts will understand this rule, without being taught by others.

With all the terrorist attack and violence, we need this loving heart which will forgive everyone unconditionally. We need many such grains which will come forward to die for others. On this day, we pray Lord; Make us discover the joy of giving than receiving. Transform our hearts and minds so that there may be a sincere desire to follow you radically till the end of our life. Amen

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 7,40-53.

Gospel Reading: John 7:40-53

40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." 41 Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. 45 The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" 46 The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" 47 The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? 48 Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" 52 They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." 53 They went each to his own house.

The message

The singes and miracles are not enough for these people to believe in Jesus. With pure logical conclusions and science, we can’t find God. To see God, we need Faith and confidence. Like Jeremiah, we need the humility to surrender ourselves fully to the will of God, because God is Good.

To such scientific searchers and philosophers, Jesus will tell them, even if you don’t believe in what I say, at least believe in what I do. Nicodemus is there to remind them to apply the existing law, but they refuse to respect their own law. How can we expect from such people to listen to the divine law?

John says that they went each to their own house. They decided to remain totally ignorant about Jesus, the presence of God amidst them. To listen to the Word of God, we should come out of our closed doors and be ready to welcome the positive disturbances that the Word may impose in us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 7,1-2.10.25-30.

« Vous me connaissez ?

Gospel Reading: John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. 2 Now the Jews' feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 Yet we know where this man comes from; and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from." 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, "You know me, and you know where I come from? But I have not come of my own accord; he who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me." 30 So they sought to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.

The message

Very often we are confused with what we see and discern our course of action accordingly. The wisdom will say, it is important to identify the invisible energy which makes the person to do such act and in this discovery, we will be able to discover the invisible person in the visible activities enacted by him.

The people of the time of Jesus are mistaken with the identity of Jesus, because they refused to overcome from the visible realities, to the invisible truth: Jesus is the Messiah. Today, we also get struck with the words used by others, the actions committed, and fail drastically to identify the invisible, hidden person, who is in these acts.

To understand this mystery, we should be connected like the branch to the vine. Only the people, who are connected with God, can understand the invisible presence of God in the visible realities. Why to blame the sun while keeping the eyes closed?
