Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 6,27-38.

Scripture: Luke 6:27-38

27 "But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. 31 And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. 32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. 37 "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

The message

The heart of today’s reading is “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” Is it possible for us, mortals, to be like God? Love and pray for our enemies, for example! ………… Though many of us doubt this possibility, Jesus seems to think the other way. If he proposes to be merciful, like the Father, He believes strongly that it is attainable for us the mortals.

If we try it all alone, we will never succeed, rather get the help of someone who is capable of raising us up above from simple moral being to eternal inheritors: the Holy Spirit. Since Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit to guide us and help us, with Him, it is possible. We should allow the Holy Spirit to guide us and accompany us in our discernment and decision making processes. Thus in this spiritual accompaniment, we will be extraordinary people, in our behaviour not only in doing but also in being, as Jesus is asking us to be.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 6,20-26.

Scripture: Luke 6:20-26

20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 "Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. "Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh. 22 "Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. 24 "But woe to you that are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 "Woe to you that are full now, for you shall hunger. "Woe to you that laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 26 "Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.

The message

If we interpret that only those who are poor and hunger will be blessed, then we miss radically the point of interest. It is not our material poverty that Jesus is interested, rather a heart which finds its source of subsistence in God, in the providence of God. A heart which depends fully in God.

The more we detach from the earthly glory and power, the easier will be for us to get attached in God, as the branch which attach itself to the vine. It is in God alone that the humanity can find the eternal happiness. All the joy and the happiness that the world can give, will make us all the more hunger and we will never be stratified. Only the happiness that God will give can satisfy us without seeking for higher happiness, because the heart won’t feel the need of higher happiness, says Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Zorobabel engendra Abioud, Abioud engendra Éliakim, Éliakim engendra Azor,
Azor engendra Sadok, Sadok engendra Akim, Akim engendra Élioud,
Comme il avait formé ce projet, voici que l’ange du Seigneur lui apparut en songe et lui dit : « Joseph, fils de David, ne crains pas de prendre chez toi Marie, ton épouse, puisque l’enfant qui est engendré en elle vient de l’Esprit Saint ;

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 (alternate reading: Luke 6:12-19)

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa, 8 and Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; 19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us).

The message

It is in Mary that we very clearly understand the accomplishment of the promise of God. She believed and she was blessed. All those who believe will be blessed. In her we become the best disciples of Christ: those who listen to the Word of God and put in practice.

While celebrating the nativity of Mary, we celebrate our own birth in the filial relationship under the Cross, not only in the Father of Christ, but also in His mother: This is your mother, this is your son.

In her intercession, we believe her accompaniment in our journey towards Christ. She who has accompanied Jesus, till the Cross, will be the best teacher to teach us, how to reach Jesus. In her, we can learn to meditate and contemplate the Word of God. All her apparitions have brought to the world the message of Christ. Since she is capable of making us to understand the word of God and the will of the Father, we pray to her to take our intentions to Christ and help us how to pray and contemplate.

I wish you all a very happy feast.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 6,6-11.

Scripture: Luke 6:6-11

6 On another Sabbath, when he entered the synagogue and taught, a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come and stand here." And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?" 10 And he looked around on them all, and said to him, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The message

Let us learn to imitate Jesus in our daily lives and prudently deal with our adversaries. It is possible that we are surrounded by wicket and bad people. Their wickedness and their presence should never condition our good deeds. Like Jesus we should never stop doing good. Let us choose good in all occasions.

In this process of discerning the good and doing, it may sometime be the cause of our suffering. Jesus never chose to suffer, but accepted it to save the humanity, in consequence of His love for us. It is in the same sense saint Paul took his suffering and that we should take our own suffering. It is in this way that the suffering is desired and willed, because only through the Cross that the resurrection is assured. In this suffering we participate in the suffering of Christ, by which, like Jesus, our master par excellence, we will cooperate in the accomplishment of the will of the Father.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 6,1-5.

In English

Scripture: Luke 6:1-5

1 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grain fields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?" 3 And Jesus answered, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?" 5 And he said to them, "The Son of man is lord of the Sabbath."

The message

Jesus is well informed on the history of salvation. The people of Israel was a special community and it was different from others. Jesus doesn’t want us to be like others, rather be ourselves, fully rooted in Christ. Why we should be like others doing what all others do? Jesus wishes that we keep our identity as children of God and obey only to the divine law than human precepts.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 5,33-39.

In English

Scripture: Luke 5:33-39

33 And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." 34 And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." 36 He told them a parable also: "No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment; if he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, `The old is good.'"

The message

We should learn to ignore the peripheral observances and concentrate on the essential. Fasting and keeping the customs like others, though important, the essential is to be with Christ, the saviour, the cause of our joy. It is in Him we can have the eternal joy. How to be sad and do fasting while living in Christ? Should we be stupid to do so? Many of us do such stupid things in their life, ignoring the essentials of life: listening the word of God and putting them practice.

Many of us in our eagerness to do wonderful things, mess up everything, thinking of doing some inventive act, like mixing the new with the old, without knowing the cause, effort and finality of such act. There is time to be joyful and to be sad. We need the Holy Spirit to help us to discern how and what to do in our spiritual journey towards the plenitude of holiness.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 5,1-11.

En effet, un grand effroi l’avait saisi, lui et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, devant la quantité de poissons qu’ils avaient pêchés ;

Scripture: Luke 5:1-11

1 While the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. 2 And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." 5 And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, 7 they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

The message

All that is expected of us in our daily life is to listen to the Lord. A blind obedience to the goodness of God will produce always good result. It is our intelligence which blocks us to advance in our faith. In faith God will surprise us. Like Peter, the professional fisher man, decided to listen to the son of a carpenter, it is important that we heed to others, though they may be insignificant in our personal or professional life. He did express his dismay, but obeyed. Let us have the courage to obey and listen to the Lord, the Lord who speaks to us through our brothers and sisters and experience the joyful divine surprises.

It is Faith, faith alone can take us closer to God. The faith will come only if you know God personally. Jesus has come to reveal to us this divine knowledge. In Him and through Him alone can we discover the quality of God. Thus a perfect imitation of Christ and an accomplishment of His will, will be a perfect knowledge of God and accomplishment of the will of the Father. Like Peter and Paul, we too are called to know God and love Him. Is it possible to love God without Faith?

Évangile de Jésus Christ

Luc 4,38-44.

Scripture: Luke 4:38-44

38 And he arose and left the synagogue, and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they besought him for her. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately she rose and served them. 40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 42 And when it was day he departed and went into a lonely place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them; 43 but he said to them, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose." 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

The message

It is important that we learn to be alone with the Father. Though this prayer was not a need for Jesus, He took pleasure to be with the Father and it was His joy: listening the world of God and put it in to practice. Every Christian act should be the fruit of contemplation. If not, it will lose its valour. It is in this very prayer that Jesus learns to leave this place.

Like the Apostles who searched their joy in the Lord, let us also learn to search this Joy in the Lord. There we won’t be disappointed, because we are sure to find it.

Jesus didn’t come to do miracles. However, when need arises, he did some miracles so that they may know the love of the Father. Sometime we will be asked to do something totally different from what we are called for. Let us, like Jesus, learn to be with the Father and He will help us to discern His will.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 4, 31-37)

Scripture: Luke 4:31-37

31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath; 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 "Ah! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." 37 And reports of him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

The message

The faith, though is a gift of the Holy Spirit, it begins with trust and confidence. The confidence or the trust is the fruit of knowledge of God. The external signs, like miracles can help us to know the works of God and the God who is in action. In Jesus today we see clearly the power of His Words. Many of us don’t have this opportunity to have a personal experience.

When we come across such experience either personal or collective, let us not stop by a simple amusement or wonder, rather take a step further to get closer to God and discover the invisible presence of God in such action. If we don’t take such initiative, we will miss the opportunity to see this God in action in our daily life.

Let us ask ourselves, once we are convinced of the presence of God in our life, what is our personal engagement to spread this Good News to our brothers and sister? Shall we do something today and positively engage to announce the Good News?

En vérité, je vous le dis : Au temps du prophète Élie, lorsque pendant trois ans et demi le ciel retint la pluie, et qu’une grande famine se produisit sur toute la terre, il y avait beaucoup de veuves en Israël ;

Scripture: Luke 4:16-30

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the Sabbath day. And he stood up to read; 17 and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." 20 And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." 22 And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, "Is not this Joseph's son?"

23 And he said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, `Physician, heal yourself; what we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here also in your own country.'" 24 And he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." 28 When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong. 30 But passing through the midst of them he went away.

The message

There is nothing par hazard that happens in the life of Jesus. Since Jesus’ obedience to His Father is par excellence, everything goes as planned by God in His life. Thus coming to the synagogue, choosing the words of prophet Isaiah and explaining the world of God with authority, is also something willed by God so that the people may understand the accomplishment of the word of God in Jesus.

Today I invite my readers to take a position in this gospel. In Jesus, are we teaching with divine authority or purely human intelligence?

With the crowd, do we give attention when others speak with sufficient seriousness and do we understand the Word of God addressed to us and are we sincere in putting into practice all that is expected of us from this gospel message?

With the high priests and elites of then society, do we judge others from their personal identity? Do we reject the word of God addressed to us through others? Do we have the humility to listen from the so called ordinary people?
