Gospel text

(Mt 8,28-34):

When Jesus came to the territory of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs who were coming from the tombs met him. They were so savage that no one could travel by that road. They cried out, “What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?” Some distance away a herd of many swine was feeding. The demons pleaded with him, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.” And he said to them, “Go then!” They came out and entered the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea where they drowned. The swineherds ran away, and when they came to the town they reported everything, including what had happened to the demoniacs. Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they begged him to leave their district.

The Application

It is difficult to accept the disturbance. Abraham is confronted with the jealousy of his wife and it seems to us that God has proved her right. Even in today's gospel, people did not want to welcome the Lord and they were disturbed by the Lord's act. To our surprise, the Lord has accepted their request.

I am not comparing these events. However, I would like to share with you my personal feeling. Like Abraham, in our daily lives, if we have the courage to consult and obey God, we will feel not only the fulfillment of God's will in us, but also how God protects Ishmael, the son of Hagar. God does not abandon anyone. Even in the weakness of our brothers and sisters that Lord is capable of bring good out of it.

To do this, we must let God work in us, in His way and in His time. If we put our trust in the Lord and be faithful to what God commands us, God will not let demons dominate us, for we are his children. We must therefore discern and act with dignity, as children of God, full of love and mercy. Since God is free, he will leave this region, at their own request. Let us pray that, in our freedom, we do not drive the Lord away from us. Let us remain connected to God, as the branches are connected to the Vine.

Action of the day: Listen to your interior impulsions.

«They begged him to leave their district»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we are given to contemplate a sad contrast. “Contrast” because we admire the power and divine majesty of Jesus Christ, to whom the demons submit voluntarily (a certain sign of the arrival of the Kingdom of heaven). But, at the same time, we deplore the narrowness and stinginess which the human heart is capable of, when refusing the bearer of Good News: “The whole town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they begged him to leave their district” (Mt 8:34). And “sad” because “The true light, which enlightens everyone (...) came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him” (Jn 1:9-11).

More contrast and more confusion when we pay attention to the fact that man is free and this freedom has the “power to halt” God's infinite power. In other words: the infinite divine power can go as far as our “powerful” freedom allows. And this is so because God loves us mainly with a Father's love. As a Father, we should not be surprised that He is so respectful of our freedom: He does not impose his love upon us; He just proposes it to us.

God, with infinite wisdom and goodness, providentially rules the Universe while respecting our freedom; even when this freedom turns its back on Him and does not want to accept his will. Contrary to what it may seem, He does not let the world out of his hands: God always brings everything to a good conclusion, despite all hindrances we can raise against him. In fact, these hindrances are, first of all, turning against us.

However, we can affirm: «before human freedom God has wanted to become “powerless”. And it can also be said that God pays for the great gift [our freedom] given to a being created in his image and likeness [man]» (Saint John Paul II). God pays! If we throw Him out, He obeys and goes away. He pays, but we lose. On the other hand, we come out winning when we respond like the Virgin Mary: “I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 8,28-34):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Mt 16,13-19):

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

«You are the Christ, the Son of the living God»

Mons. Jaume PUJOL i Balcells,

Archbishop Emerit of Tarragona(Tarragona, Spain)

Today we celebrate the solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul, who were basic for the early Church and, therefore, for our Christian faith. Apostles of the Lord, witnesses of the first hour, they lived those initial moments of expansion of the Church and sealed with their blood their loyalty to Jesus. If only we, Christians of the 21st century, also know how to be reliable witnesses of the love of God in the midst of men, as these two Apostles were, along with so many others of our fellow citizens.

In one of his first interventions addressing the Cardinals, Pope Francis told them that we must 'walk, build and confess'. That is, we must move forward in our way of life, by building up our Church and by giving testimony of the Lord. But the Pope warned: "We can walk as much as we want, we can build many things, but if we do not profess Jesus Christ, things go wrong. We may become a charitable NGO, but not the Church, the Bride of the Lord.”

We have heard in the Mass Gospel a central fact for the life of Peter and the Church. Jesus asks that fisherman of Galilee an act of faith in his divine status and Peter does not hesitate to say: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Mt 16:16). Jesus institutes the Primacy immediately by telling Peter that he will be the firm rock upon which the Church, throughout the ages, will be built (cf. Mt 16:18) and by giving him the power of the keys of the Kingdom, the Supreme authority.

Although Peter and his successors are assisted by the force of the Holy Spirit, they still need our prayers, because their mission is of great significance for the life of the Church: they must be a strong foundation for all Christians throughout the ages; we must, therefore, also pray, every day, for the Holy Father, for his person and for his intentions.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 16,13-19):

Mgr. Jaume PUJOL i Balcells,

Gospel text

(Mt 8,18-22):

When Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other shore. A scribe approached and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But Jesus answered him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.”

The Application

  • Following Jesus is not just a personal will, but a response to the divine will.
  • Following Jesus is really an invitation to live our lives in a perfect way, using all the gifts that God has naturally given us, so that by our actions and words God may be glorified.
  • Following Jesus is an invitation to live our lives in full freedom, recognizing our own divine identity inherited in baptism, as a child of God.
  • To follow Jesus is to live our humanity divinely
  • To follow Jesus is to become Christ ourselves to our brothers and sisters.
  • Therefore, I am personally convinced, even in my weaknesses and limitations, I can follow Christ, in a perfect way, as willed by God, through my faithfulness to the commandment of love. It is in my capacity to love others, as Christ has loved me, that I become a perfect disciple of Christ.

Action of the day: Be yourself, as God has created you.

«Follow me»

Today, the Gospel presents us —through two characters— a quality the good disciple of Jesus must have: a detachment from material goods. Before that St. Matthew's Gospel points out to a detail I would not like to overlook: “When Jesus saw a crowd around him…” (Mt 8:18). Crowds gather around the Lord to listen to his words, to be healed of their material and spiritual sicknesses; they are seeking their salvation and a breath of eternal Life amidst a world in conflict.

As at that time, something similar happens in today's world: more or less consciously, all of us need God's help, to satiate our heart with true spiritual goods, such as a better knowledge of Jesus Christ and a life of friendship and love for Him. Otherwise, we risk tumbling into the trap filling out our heart with other “gods” that cannot give meaning to our live: mobile phones, Internet, tourist holidays, a frantic work to make more money, a car better than the neighbor’s one or a gym where to excel with the best figure of them all... This is what is happening to many people right now.

In sharp contrast, though, St. John Paul II's outcry to the youth resounded full of force and confidence: «It is possible to be both modern and profoundly faithful to Jesus Christ». For this we need to do as the Lord, breaking away with what may link us to a much materialized way of life that serves no purpose other than closing the doors to the Holy Spirit.

“The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head (...) Follow me” (Mt 8:22), says today's Gospel. And St. Gregory the Great reminds us: “We make use of temporal things, but our hearts are set on what is eternal. Temporal goods help us on our way, but our desire must be for those eternal realities which are our goal.” This is a good guideline to examine whether we are properly following Jesus.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 8,18-22):

«Suis-moi»

Abbé Jordi PASCUAL i Bancells

(Salt, Girona, Espagne)

God never desires death for his people, for God created man for an imperishable existence, he made him an image of what he is in himself. "However, the history of man does not stop telling us that men die from the beginning of creation, even unjustly.  The book of wisdom affirms it by saying, because of sin, man has become weak and in this weakness he dies.  When we talk about death, we do not mean biological death, but spiritual death, the death of the free man, separation from God. The readings of the day assure us that faith can help us to live again, in communion with God, as Jesus explained to Nicodemus, inviting him to be reborn.  "Let a man appear who is able to let life live by responding to his aspirations for the absolute and for sharing, this man will be incorruptible. But he must be God to succeed in this project: he is called Jesus the Lord. "

Faith in this man changes every other look that man can have in his life. This approach helps us to focus, not on the death or illness of this woman, but rather on the presence of Jesus. Jesus is there, and everything can change. The presence of Jesus allowed this woman to approach Jesus and present her concern to him, without saying anything. She shows a totally unknown and unexpected gesture, yet instantly recognized by Jesus. It seems like a stupid gesture to us, yet for God, everything is an expression of faith. "My daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed of your evil. "

It seems to us that this healing was addressed to this suffering woman, in truth, will ensure Jairus, the father of this girl. Every expression of faith gives rise to another expression of faith. Jesus will invite Jairus to believe, to believe like this woman, with certainty of a solution, for the Master of all healing is with you. Jair saw how Jesus reintegrated this woman into society, not as a sick woman, but as a free woman, free of her expression of faith, free of the social barrier that separated and isolated her from the common life.

We live in a society of mockers, who tell us, what's the point, or the girl is dead, everything is over. For God, everything begins again, including the life of conversion. He does not want to separate us from the society that isolates us and separates us by exaggerating our differences.  Just as He put the woman back in her proper place in society, He will put this girl back in the care of her parents, inviting them to feed her. Nourished with true food of faith, so that she may live this new life of resurrection in a radical way.

We must never forget the attention that the Lord pays to his disciples. He will take with him Peter, John and James. Their presence, even if it is silent, is important for the Lord. Jesus invites us to be witnesses of these events, because they are capable of giving birth to the same faith in us as in this woman and in Jair. Above all, we must be with the Lord. Faith brings us together and brings us all into communion, as one people, one body, the Body of Christ, where each one is invited to live his or her faith fully and freely.

Gospel text

(Mt 8,5-17):

When Jesus entered Capernaum, an army captain approached him to ask his help, «Sir, my servant lies sick at home. He is paralyzed and suffers terribly». Jesus said to him, «I will come and heal him». The captain answered, «I am not worthy to have you under my roof. Just give an order and my boy will be healed. For I myself, a junior officer, give orders to my soldiers. And if I say to one: ‘Go’, he goes, and if I say to another: ‘Come’, he comes, and to my servant: ‘Do this’, he does it». When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those who were following him, «I tell you, I have not found such faith in Israel. I say to you, many will come from east and west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven; but the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness; there they will wail and grind their teeth». Then Jesus said to the captain, «Go home now. As you believed, so let it be». And at that moment his servant was healed.

Jesus went to Peter's house and found Peter's mother-in-law in bed with fever. He took her by the hand and the fever left her; she got up and began to wait on him. Towards evening they brought to Jesus many possessed by evil spirits, and with a word he drove out the spirits. He also healed all who were sick. In doing this he fulfilled what was said by the prophet Isaiah: He bore our infirmities and took on himself our diseases.

The Application

A person of word knows the value of the word. Recognising our own value system is a first step towards recognising the values that our society hold, especially the people we meet daily. This centurion, knowing the value of his word, recognises in Jesus the power of his Word, "Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof, but only say a word and my servant will be healed. ".

Abraham's encounter with the Lord in the first reading  of the day, was also an affirmation of the promise made by the God, the Word of God. Abraham recognized his limitations, and also the power of the promise of the Lord. This behavior of Abraham is a fruit of his faith. If we have the same faith, we will put all our trust in God, even if we see no possibility to hope.

At difficult times in life, we can console ourselves with the same Word of the Lord, "Is there any wonder that the Lord cannot work? "Yet it is not good to give great importance to the fruits of faith, like those of the centurion's humility, his concern for his servant, etc. Was it not faith that helped him to recognize the power of the NAME of Jesus and his Word?  With this faith, all the fruits that this faith can accord to us, will be granted to us.

Action of the day: Be a person of faith.

«I am not worthy to have you under my roof. Just give an order and my boy will be healed»

Fr. Xavier JAUSET i Clivillé

(Lleida, Spain)

Today, the Gospel speaks of the centurion's love, of his faith, confidence and humility. Of his deep concern towards his servant. He is so worried about him, that he humiliates before Jesus to ask his help: «Sir, my servant lies sick at home. He is paralyzed and suffers terribly» (Mt 8:6). This concern for others and, even more, for a servant, prompts Jesus' response: «I will come and heal him» (Mt 8:7), which is in turn followed by a series of acts of faith and confidence. The centurion does not consider himself worthy and, along with that feeling, he expresses his own faith in such a way before Jesus and before all those gathered there, that Jesus has to say: «I tell you, I have not found such faith in Israel» (Mt 8:10).

We may wonder what impels Jesus to make this miracle. We so very often ask God to no avail, though we know He is always listening! So, what happens, then? We may think we ask properly, but are we sure we do it like the centurion did? His prayer is not selfish, but full of love, humility and confidence. St. Peter Crysologus says: «The power of love does not consider possibilities (...). Love does not discern nor ponders; love does not understand reasons. Love is not resignation before impossibility, nor does it get intimidated before difficulties». Is it like that, my prayer?

«I am not worthy to have you under my roof...» (Mt 8:8). It is the centurion's answer. Do you feel this way? Is your faith like this? «Only faith can explain this mystery. Faith is true knowledge, the principles of which are beyond rational demonstration; for faith makes real for us things beyond intellect and reason» (St. Maximus, confessor). If your faith is such, then you are bound to hear too: «‘Go home now. As you believed, so let it be (...)’ And at that moment his servant was healed» (Mt 8:13).

Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Master of faith, hope and devoted love, show us how to pray so that we may obtain from the Lord that which is best for us.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 8,5-17):

Gospel text

(Mt 8,1-4):

When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. Then a leper came forward. He knelt before him and said, «Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean». Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, «I want to, be clean again». At that very moment the man was cleansed from his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, «See that you do not tell anyone, but go to the priest, have yourself declared clean, and offer the gift that Moses ordered as proof of it».

The Application

Jesus coming down in itself a voluntary movement towards the human salvation. These divine movements are very often hidden then time and revealed to the humanity in later days, because of human’s inability to aprehend the divine works with mere human intelligence.

We are limited by the time and the space, and need the visible signs, so that we may discover the truth in the realities of the history. "If you want........ and I want it," are the expressions that link these visible elements (reality) and invisible truth. Abraham, just loike anyone of us, travelled the same path from reality to truth in faith without necessary elements that we are walking today.  Thus, in this courageous approach, to a person of faith the divine will, if we remain faithful to it, will be a happiness and a hope to man, like from Ishmael to Isaac, for Abraham.

To arrive in this level of faith, we must make our own personal journey, that of Abraham and that of this leper. The recognition of our weakness and the divine goodness all go together, for our weakness itself is a grace, which makes us cry out to God, "If you are willing. "Very often in the life of the deserts, in the painful moments, in the personal tears that man discovers the divine closeness, and how much God suffers with us. If the cry is a sign of the expression of our faith, we must also seek in ourselves a means, certainly with our limits, so that our life becomes a good witness to the people.

Action of the day : Learn to cry out towards God.

«If you want to, you can make me clean»

Fr. Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano

(Cervera, Lleida, Spain)

Today, the Gospel shows us a leper, painfully conscious of his sickness, approaching Jesus and beseeching: «Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean» (Mt 8:2). When we see the Lord so close to us but our head, heart and hands so far away from his project, from their salvation, we should also feel the compulsion to formulate the same leper's expression: «Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean».

But an important question prevails: Can a sin-unconscious society beg forgiveness from our Lord? Can it beseech a purification of any kind? We all know too many people with aching and wounded hearts, their personal drama, however, being they do not always realize the extent of their situation. But, in spite of everything, Jesus is always close to us, to the very end of the age (cf. Mt 28:20), while waiting for the same petition: «Sir, if you want to...». But, our collaboration is, of course, needed. St. Augustine's sentence: «God who created you without you, will not save you without you» has become a classical one. So that we can truly change we must strive to ask our Lord for help.

Some might wonder: why is it so important to realize it, to convert and to wish to change? For the simple reason that, should we not feel like that, we should not be able to positively answer the previous question, where we said a sin-unconscious society will find it very difficult to ask the Lord for help.

This is why, when the moments of repentance and of Sacramental confession arrive, we have to get rid of the past, of all the ulcers infecting our body and our soul. We should not doubt it for a minute: Asking forgiveness is a great moment of Christian initiation, because it is when the bandage over our eyes comes off. But, what if someone does notice his situation but does not want to convert? There is an old proverb that goes: «Long absent, soon forgotten».
